  • Pure 12 volts DC off grid cooking with Kitchen Grade appliances - NO Inverter! This is a glimpse at the future of DC-powered off electrical grid cooking. I will present a demonstration of 2 simple and robust 12 volt ovens and a true kitchen grade 12 volt cooktop (or hotplate) running off of a 200 amp hour LiFePo4 battery supplied by Power Queen for test and review. My goal in the research conducted here in my Solar Workshop is to simplify and improve off electrical grid solar power utilization. I also want to promote simple and robust technology that will be necessary to survive future challenges and hardships.
    DC-AC inverters are complex pieces of electronics that are costly and likely to fail. Cooking without a DC to AC inverter is more efficient, lowers cost, and is less failure prone. In addition to that, this setup did not use a charge controller, but that research will be covered separately in another video - stay tuned.
    LiFePo4 is a very efficient lithium ion battery chemistry, almost all the energy stored in it can be extracted for later use. But typically charge controllers, inverters and inefficient high power appliances waste quite a bit of the energy. This video is a glimpse at the research I am conducting in my solar workshop into more direct and simpler ways to utilize solar power to perform common tasks.

    wow great vid!.......well....i love watching lithium batteries being "scalped".....gives me some confidence in what i'm buying....keeps manufacturers from deceiving and "cheap assing" out. i'm the new proud owner of a li time 230amp and am looking forward to learning from your vids.....thank you!

    A DC powered AC would be cool.

    • @solarpoweredge
      @solarpoweredge  Před 2 měsíci +1

      @goodcitizen4587 Absolutely, been shopping around for an DC AC setup. last week had a small refrigeration compressor running off a solar panel, but getting it to cool anything - that's going to take a while to figure out. Might still go for a pre-built system though

    I always wondered why our normal house hold appliances didn't come 12 volt ready. It's literally the standard just like 120v ac is.

    • @solarpoweredge
      @solarpoweredge  Před 2 měsíci +1

      @kevinroberts781 Good observation... in a grid down scenario, 12v DC is the easiest power to source for cooking - it's just everywhere

      Or 48V, the only true voltage. ;-)

    What about 12V InstaPot or pressure cooker? I use that camping (on inverter) and it's very efficient to cook in. Wonder if it would work with a 12v version

    • @solarpoweredge
      @solarpoweredge  Před 2 měsíci +2

      @markm4367 Great idea - family uses one and they work well. Just need to find one to convert to 12v. I did shop around a while back but haven't bought one yet. If I make any progress in that direction will share it here

    600w is nothing to run 2 toaster ovens and a burner. crazy. no inverter either. most inverters would probably use a similar amount just in stand by power if this was 120v.
    i built my own 280ah lifepo4 battery with 4x 280ah eve cells from china. cost 350$ and was the same size as a group 32 car battery. replaced the low voltage battery in my chevy volt with it for 4kwh of extra power. added 200w of flexible solar to the roof which keeps the battery charged up correctly since the slightly higher voltage compared to agm 12v makes the car think its always charged.
    going to try and add a 150w grid tie inverter to my car so i can lower my baseline load at home when the battery is full with an extension cord. see if i dont end up getting a letter

      @vevenaneathna I agree it's not a lot of watts for so much cooking action.... your setup sounds very interesting btw. Hopefully they won't send you a letter :P

    Curious if you use a solar charge controller when you connect the 400 watt panels? Like the 12v system you run, thanks

    • @solarpoweredge
      @solarpoweredge  Před 2 měsíci +3

      @Flash1857 Good observation, no traditional CC was used. I cut most of the footage to prevent confusion, maybe I shouldn't have. In the background I have been experimenting with different ways to charge without a traditional solar charge controller. Used a simple circuit in between the solar panels, still developing that part.
      Eliminating the charge controller and/or inverter completely changes the nature of solar power. I have built another system for this purpose and it's in testing now. Will share the results as soon as possible for anyone who is interested

    Is there a DC air fryer available?

    • @solarpoweredge
      @solarpoweredge  Před 14 dny

      @davidk6668 Currently attempting to modify a large air fryer to run on 12v DC, it will take lots of power. Have not seen any off-the-shelf fryers which accept DC

    Were you an only child?
    Coming from a family of 8 kids, we learned early on how to cook...

    • @solarpoweredge
      @solarpoweredge  Před 2 měsíci

      @mikehughesdesigns No, as a kid I preferred extremely amateur carpentry and electrical stuff. My brother and sister did show some interest in cooking. When I cook, I tend to burn things, but I did learn to bake half decent bread in my ovens so far
