  • Do 24 volt DC car radiator fans work better for solar powered shed ventilation? Although the cost is typically higher than 12 volt fans, 24v radiator fans in theory shouldn't need a DC converter to run off of a 50 or 100 watt 12 volt solar panel. This video shows a quick test out in my yard of the first 12 inch 24v DC radiator fan I purchased.

    It will probably be installed in my shed soon in place of the existing 12 volt fan, running straight off of a 50 watt solar panel. I call this PV-to-Load as it's an appliance connected directly to the solar panel array with no battery, no charge controller and no inverter. In this case, there is no DC converter either.
    This type of fan is sometimes called an "AC Condenser fan". But it's pretty much the same thing as a car radiator fan.
    Hope this video helps you out. Note the really small fans can be cheaper, but they aren't as efficient. 12-14 inches is best for shed ventilation.

    Be careful using any DC fan connected to a solar panel, as they usually don't have anything protecting or covering the blades. There should be a mesh covering or grille over the fan at all times while in operation.

    Another consideration is that blocking free air flow, such as laying the fan flat on the table, will decrease wind Resistance on the fan blades, which causes a higher RPM, which causes more back EMF, which causes higher effective winding resistance, which lowers the current, which lowers the power consumption and increases the voltage measurement. Suggest position fan for free air movement while testing.

      @MarcFain I hear ya, unfortunately I did not mention in the video. The orientation does slightly change the numbers; although not enormously. In this same category, there were wind gusts during the test - I could hear the RPM varying due to that. Also, in the shed, the vent filter screen loads the fan down a little due to pressure build up, still works good though.

    nice. glad i subbed for stuff like this. they make big 12v fan arrays for bitcoin miners but theyre expensive too

    Lovely and simples Sir my 9year old has got 5v usb rechargeable fan and powers it all day via a small hand held solar pannel battery booster wiv usb output a very long wire free power all day and nights ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ without the solar pannel the battery on the fan doesn't last long my boy loves your videos n asks if u have a cat❤❤

      He is on the right track sir, using that free solar power :) :D 👍 yes I have cats but not much video, you can see a clip of "heater cat" here czcams.com/video/dIN7Gzl0fhg/video.html

    Would using 2 cheaper 12 V fans in series work? Either side by side or as a "tunnel" of sorts (though I am not sure if putting fans into a tunnel formation like that would actually double the airflow or not).

      @solarpoweredge  Před 2 měsíci +3

      Yes sir that should work. PS I have tested 2 12v fans in series and will post the results asap

      @tomashubelbauer Good idea of making a ducted fan, that I haven't tried yet. However I tested 2 fans in Series in a recent bench test, here's a preview link czcams.com/video/m-yhqqFJ4gg/video.html

      @newbie101 Welcome, thanks for watching :) I put the link to the exact fan shown in the video in the description (cannot put links in chat). Might want to look at the other fans too, as there are several options

    Can you give an actual direct comparison to a 12v 12" automotive fan? I have a nearly identical setup ventilating a shed, 50w panel to 12v 12" fan with no regulator of any kind. It seems fine, and if it burns up the fan I could replace it with a 24v fan, but I wonder if my actual wattage utilized would improve? (and presumably wattage and CFM should be directly proportional if the fan blade count/size/shape are the same, right?)

    • @solarpoweredge
      @solarpoweredge  Před 2 měsíci +1

      @Brett-ui9zq Yes, I hate that I didn't include it in the video, everything is a rush job.
      I had a 12" 85w car radiator fan on this same 50w panel in my small metal shed during a previous summer (before the brushless fan install). The 12v fan pulls the 50w panel voltage down to 9v if I recall correctly. Still works good - but obviously not as efficient. The 24v, same solar panel, operates closer to vMP and is noticeably more powerful on the same panel.
      *But while the 24v moves more air, it might wear out faster than the 12v fan at lower voltage. It's actually good to undervolt these fans, they last much longer.
      Anyway, the 24v fan impressed me enough and is currently in my small shed for about a month now.
      Btw do you have a voltmeter? Try measuring across the 12v fan while in operation. Logically the 24v fan is about twice the impedance of the 12v so it runs at higher voltage. Yet 12v still works well and cost less.
      Hope this info helps. Please let me know if you can test the voltage on your fan, I'm curious what voltage it's getting. If you can measure the amps (clamp on meter) then the wattage can be calculated as well.

      I actually have two panels and fans at opposite ends of my shed, but getting identical sun. I just swapped one for 24v and it’s often stopped in lower light conditions when the 12v is spinning, but when they both get full sun the 24v is moving a LOT more air, it sounds like an airplane about it take off.

      @Brett-ui9zq Very interesting, 24v is definitely the way to go!
