But, plants grow larger in soil.
@@madelaine3209 I guess it depends. A proper hydroponic setup would promote better growth than even soil too, but yeah, plain water culture, they don’t get out of control. 😃👍🏼🌿
Hi Paul. I'm admiring your beautiful phal, looks like an intermediate size. You've done so well to get it to bloom. My phals have gone outside again for another cool down to shock them into blooming. Never say never when it comes to mealy bugs. They love my syngoniums, I sprayed one plant down with alcohol and a week later they're back again. Like you I don't know how they get inside. Also, I love the goldfish plant and look forward to seeing the flower fully opened. Don't worry about boring us with plant talk, that's what we're here for, PLANTS!
@@renatecormick7399 HOORRAAAAAYYYYY. Thank you so much for that!!! I think you’re right. This phal isn’t a mini but it’s not full size. I didn’t realize they had intermediate sized as well. 😃👍🏼🌱
Paul, you are such a great plant parent! I’d give you plant cuttings, but you are far away. Plant people are the greatest. I have that NOID Hoya. Lovely plant. I received it as a cutting many moons ago.

@@paultheplantparent2702 The Hoya is huge and has given me lovely star flowers. I think it’s called ‘Matilda’. I’ve given it a buzz cut many times and usually give away the cuttings. Okay; the aloe has me stunned, that’s awesome. I love my succs too much to try a water culture with one yet… but I certainly have PLENTY to prop and eventually try in the not so too far future!

How do you remove the offshoots to start new plants? I have two offshoots from a Gray Star plant that are growing in water and not sure what to do.
@@beth7843 usually the offshoots can separate easily from the mother. As long as they’re big enough to survive on their own. Are you not sure how to remove them?
How often do you change water?
@@bettymontgomery7606 hello there. I only change the water if it isn’t clean. As long as it’s clear and no smells, I just top it off. In the beginning it’s more important to change out the water if it’s not crystal clear. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Hi Paul. I find it funny seeing Bromiliads growing indoors because in my sub tropical climate they are everywhere in my garden. Just for fun I'd like to try one in semi hydro, indoors but no space left for another indoor plant. That said I still like to get my hands on a plectranthus, they look so nice.
@@renatecormick7399 plectranthus are so rewarding. And there are a bunch of uses!!!! So funny how you have bromeliads growing right outside. I can grow them outside during summer but that’s it. I wish I lived in the tropics. 🥰

I just started adding begonias to my collection. They start off vibrant.. then......well, you know! They are all alive, but not so happy. I've decided recently that I'm going to try water propagation and possibly transfer to leca. Soil just isn't working for me. Thanks for confirming this!
@@msphil4life I completely relate. They’re also humidity lovers. Keeping them in terrarium-like conditions, you can definitely see the difference. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

how will it do in aquarium? will it survive under water?
@@amanpakwan232 probably wouldn’t survive completely submerged. The leaves need to breathe air. But some people put the roots in aquariums. 👍🏼🪴
Do you just put them in a pot then?
Hello Paul! How did you transition her from soil to water?
Hello there. I cleaned all the soil off of the roots completely and just put it in the water. Keeping the water clean during transition is so important. The only issue I’m having now is the lack of humidity where I keep her. Some crispy edges but she’s still thriving. 😃👍🏼
@@paultheplantparent2702 I would be very afraid of transitioning my makoyana and lancifolia, but have been wanting to for so long!!! When I actually started my plant hobby, I used to be a Calathea addict. Alas, most of them died on me… so moving on, I delved into aroids and leca/ passive hydroponics.. But my calatheas have been in soil, still 😹😹 By the way, you have a handsome voice!
@@lemusiciensolitaire8792 Wow!!! Thank you so much!!! 😊. It’s always scary making g a transition like that. I’m also big into semi hydro. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼. I mostly use lava rock though. Thanks so much for watching and your convo. 😃🙏🏼🪴
@@paultheplantparent2702 Thanks for responding!!! I also would like to try pon / lava rock, but they’re much more expensive than leca! Recently, I tried a mixture of perlite, pumice, and vermiculite for a DIY pon to pot my hoyas with, and they seem to like medium! Would you have instagram by the way?
@@lemusiciensolitaire8792 yup. I have instagram. Same name as the channel. My Hoyas do great in lava and acrylic here. So much fun experimenting.
Are you telling me that’s what is in my package? Lol.
That and some other stuff!!!! 😃😃😃😃😃. Love u, cuz!!!
Hi Paul, I was interested to hear you mention that you added slow release fertiliser to your water reservoir and the plant seemed to respond well. I have all my phals in leca self watering and was adding pellets to my houseplants and put some in the phals as well. They eventually found their way to the bottom. I ended up flushing them out in case they caused root burn. So I'm thinking now I could put some right into the water and see how it goes. Also, Paul I'm excited to tell you that my pepperoni leaf that I cut in half and placed it in moss, has a baby growing. The other half of the leaf with the stem attached is doing nothing. Thanks for another interesting update on your plants. I'm sorry I've babble on for so long, just had to tell you in too much detail what's going on in my plants life.😂
I LOVE hearing what’s going on with your plants!!! 😃😃😃. For some reason the top portion of peperomia leaves propagate faster than the bottom portion. It’s interesting!!! Also, there’s a slow release that’s actually good for orchids. I just got it. It’s also in my affiliate shop in the link in the video descriptions- Nutricote. They recommend using it for orchids as well as tropical plants. Can’t wait to try it out. So much fun to be growing these plants together. 😃😃😃🪴🪴🪴
Hi, does the Vicks plant smell like Vicks? I love how bright green the leaves are!❤❤
Hey Cuzzie. You can tell me when your package arrives. 🙃
How often do u change water
Hello there. 🙂 In the beginning, I change the water out more regularly if it's not looking so clean. Otherwise, I keep the original water since the rooting hormones in the water can help. Clean is the name of the game - as long as it looks clean and doesn't have an odor, you're probably good. 😀
They r beautiful ❤🎉😊
Thank you so much!!! I love just looking at them!!! Plants are amazing!!! 🤩
Do you do this for any plant or only pepperomia? I can’t imagine how healthy this is for the plant though. Why not just use tree fern fiber? Thanks for trying this and sharing!
I have so many different plant genera growing in this way. There’s no decomposing, since it’s acrylic, it’s reusable if you clean/disinfect before reusing and it’s like a different type of semi hydro. As long as you supplement with fertilizer, they do great! I’ve had some growing for a few years in acrylic already. 😃👍🏼. Some of my challenging plants do well in this medium. 🪴🌱
@@paultheplantparent2702 thank you!
@@LeafyConversations thanks so much for reaching out and for watching. 😃😃😃
Have you grown begonias in the acrylic yarn? How about larger plants like monstera albo?
I’ve grown begonias (Rex and Cane) in acrylic, as well as Philo Pink Princess, a larger columnea species and a bunch of others. 😃 I’m going to try my hand at Monstera probably soon. They do well in water, so why not in Acrylic yarn. 🧶 😃
@@paultheplantparent2702 Awesome thanks. I watched a bunch of your content today after asking and I actually just put a tiny pink princess prop I had in water into the yarn method. Fingers crossed even though I don’t need another pink princess lol. I’m making chains now to experiment on some syngonium I don’t need more of either 😂.
@@valerieskillman2934 it’s fun right? That’s a great way to test the waters. Something you don’t really need to I started with coleus and Rex begonias. Now I have Hoyas, Pothos, peperomia, succulents and so many others in the yarn. Yay!!! Keep me posted on how it goes.
Will do! Yup I figured I start with low value plants before throwing an albo or Thai constellation into a ball of yarn. It is fun and it makes me look more grandmotherly haha.

You'd probably love streptocarpus.
I see them a lot but haven’t tried one yet. “Yet” is the key word. 😃😃😃. Tysm for watching.
It's great to see someone trying out something different, and it's very economical 😊 Do you have any issues with mold or mildew growing with this method?
Thanks so much. No mold or mildew issues, normally. If I transfer a plant either rotting issues, like any other medium, it could continue. But disinfecting the plant beforehand usually fixes that issue. 😃👍🏼🪴
Hello Paul, hope your Sunday's great!! I'm really getting tempted to try one of my very slow growing Phal Orchids in acrylic!!❤😊
Hey Aida (hoping that’s your name). It’s a fun way to grow them. It’s like a non-decomposing sphagnum. Hope you’re doing great!!!! Always great to hear from you.
Would orchids like this way of cultivation?
Yup. The video from yesterday has an orchid growing in this method and it’s spiking. Yay!!! Thanks so much for watching. 😃😃😃🪴
I love this way of growing, but how do you fertilize?
Tysm. I really do too. So many less casualties and they love it. I just use fertilizer like I would for semi hydro. I’ve been using an orchid fertilizer at 1/2 to 1/4 strength. The link in the description has all the items I use as well. 😃
Paul's phals happy hour!! L0L It is so very nice to see your face!! 😁 I'm excited to see their progress!!
Hey Cindy. Long time no speak. Tysm. Hope you’re doing great!!!! 😊
Yay!!! Paul, finally can put a face to the voice, thank you. Did you give the phals a cool down to initiate spikes? We are in middle of winter and I put my phals outside for 3 weeks but so far no sign of spikes, maybe I’m too impatient.
Yay!!!! I had just given them a rest and kinda forgot about them in that dark room. Once I took them out and gave them a drink, spikes!!! 😃😃😃
Your phals look healthy! I hope you'll feature them in another video when they're in bloom! My orchids are all in leca semi hydro with a wick, and for the most part they do great. I did almost kill one that was "blooming itself to death," so yeah, that can happen. That one's in rehab now.
It’s crazy but true. lol. Some don’t know when to stop lol. I’ll definitely make a new video once the buds start to open. Tysm for watching. Hoping your ICU orchid bounces back quickly!!! 😃😃😃
Nice
Thanks so much. I appreciate you stopping by. 😃
how did it turn out ??????
This one started to heal, until most of my marantas and calatheas got devoured by a pest - not sure if they were thrips or mites. I never had that problem before and only 1 or 2 plants survived the infestation. I don’t collect calathea anymore because they are pest magnets. Such a horrible experience with those bugs. 😞
Thank you so much ....i have a question plzz why my plant leaves are turning yellow..how can I fix that
Hello there. Do you have your plant in water or in soil? In soil, that could mean too much water. In water, may need to check the roots, but let me know how you're growing it and we can see how to handle it. 🙂
Hi Paul. Lots of interesting things going on in your plants, thanks for sharing them with us.
Thanks so much for stopping by. Hope you’re doing great!!!! 😊
Very innovative! I was naturally moving in this direction and going to try yarn today. Growing materials are expensive, especially if there’s shipping involved. In my area, it’s hit and miss for buying growing medium. I’ve also noticed that the bags of soil aren’t what they used to be decades ago. Just rediscovered plants again.
I hear you. We don’t always get the quality we’re expecting, especially locally. Excited for you to try it!!!! 😃😃😃🌱🪴
Isn’t Mother Nature amazing ❤🪴💜🌱😉 thanks Paul 👍
She sure is. Thank you so much, Diane !!!! 😃😃😃
This sounds like a good alternative to strait perlite. Less messy and shouldn't evaporate as fast.
There are so many different ways. I like to try them all to see what I like best. Thanks so much for watching. 😃
My props always get moldy. They never survive
Hi Paul! I love your videos, thank you for the update!! My two Calatheas are suffering from pests, one only has trips but the other also spider mites. I´ve been desperately treating them with potasic soap, pesticides... they keep coming back and this has been going on for a year. So I think it's time to move them to water! I only moved one monster to water several months ago, also desperate about pests and its doing way better now. However, I don´t have any knowledge on water culture. Can you please let me know what nutrients do you use for your calatheas? Do you have any video or recommendation to learn about nutrients for starters? Thank you!
Hello there. Thank you so much!!! 😃. My calathea got hit by pests too. Most of them didn’t survive. 😔. But the nutrients I use are in the link in the description of most videos. It’s an orchid fertilizer. 😃👍🏼. I stopped collecting Calathea because of the pest challenges. 🌱
Hi Paul!!!! The leaves you put in the moss, you keep the lid on, always? Caise I think that's where my mistake is. I always rhink they'll rot, so i open them. Nothing I put in moss makes it. I end up transferring them to water and BAMM!! Happiness!! 🤣
Hey Cindy. Yeah, I leave the lids on. Otherwise they’ll dry up really quickly. Surprisingly, they do great without removing the lids. How have you been???
I love rescuing plants. I do it all the time.
Isn’t it so satisfying when you can bring them back to life? 😍. It’s like a hobby at this point. lol. Tysm for watching and commenting. 😃😃😃
Hey what do you mean about misting?
When I started spraying the plants with water daily, they started growing quickly and blooms soon showed up. Just a spray bottle with water. 😃👍🏼
bisa di air ya
Yes. I’ve grown them in water as well! 😃👍🏼
Great info!!! I appreciate the content. What nutrients do you feed the plants and how often?
Thank you so much! I’ve handled the nutrients in two ways. Half strength added once a month or more diluted - 1/4 strength added to each watering/flushing out of the old water. I use two different types, but mostly the orchid fertilizer - there’s a link in the video description. 😃👍🏼
