    Very interesting that hoyas like acrylic yarn. I have one that I've had forever that has exactly the same amount of leaves as when I got it. I'm fixing to make me a chain and stick that baby in it. It's in a very bright spot and I recently added a grow light as well. That coleus gets me every time. It's amazing!!!

    Hi Paul, I’m very happy to watch another slightly longer video, so that must tell you that I like watching YOU!
    No really, I just like watching anything informative about houseplants. It’s interesting that your Hoya Krimson Princess still has variegation when it’s not particularly close to light. I have mine hanging about 1ft from a north facing window (southern hemisphere) and the top foot is only giving me green leaves. Is it possible that it has reverted to the plain carnosa coloured leaves. (Growing in Pon, self watering systems).

    • @paultheplantparent2702
      @paultheplantparent2702  Před 5 měsíci

      Hey there. It could be reverting. I’ve seen them revert in both ways - to full green and full white. But the white never survives on its own. Thank you so much for your kindness. It’s always so great to message with you. I’m thankful you’re here!!! 😃😃😃

    Hi Paul - I've been so busy with work projects from dawn to bed time, and finally have a few days off - whew. Taking some time to catch up on important videos:) Always enjoy seeing how your plants are doing. The aglaonema mix looks lovely! One of my favorites for pops of color. And something finally clicked in my brain while looking at your coleus: am I missing something key by not combining 2 grow methods? I have 3 plants growing in soil with a yarn wick into a reservoir, which I hated setting up but it works. And I have some plants growing in yarn instead of soil, which works well but sometimes I don’t even notice it’s gone dry. Why have I not done a plant with yarn as soil AND left the 2 ends dangling into a reservoir so I can easily see if there’s water in it? Got to laugh at myself:) Will be setting up some of these today! Side note - I picked up a starlite syngonium at a plat swap a few months ago and it's still doing great - loving the bright narrow variegated leaves - totally recommend if you don't have one.

      Wow. I’m going to have to look into that. I saw one online earlier today but didn’t pay close enough attn. I’m gonna have to look back. The wicks with yarn medium work great too. Let me know how it goes!!! 😃😃😃

    If I didn't see it I wouldn't believe it --- growing in yarn. Would love to know why you decided to grow in it. I have questions. Also doesn't the plant get too heavy in a such a light weight medium? Also not sure if I missed it, do you get algae? Well this will have to be something else I try. Re watering, do you just water enough to wet the yarn and how do you deal with re potting? Does it act a little like moss?

    • @paultheplantparent2702
      @paultheplantparent2702  Před 5 měsíci +1

      So happy you messaged. 🙃. I came upon the yarn, kinda by accident - wanted to keep some cuttings hydrated before I potted them up and forgot about them. Well, they rooted in and grew very lush. Shocking. Been using it ever since! I do get algae. I either rinse more often or use hydrogen peroxide in the water. For most plants I keep a small reservoir at the bottom. For transplanting, if I’m growing in yarn, I’d probably be transplanting to more yarn but if to soil, there would be some root loss in the process.

      @paultheplantparent2702 thank you for responding. Yes, I'm currently trying to save a fishbone prayer plant. The leaves are all curled up except for 2. there aren't signs of browning in the leaves. Let me explain... initially, I bought this Fish Bone Prayer plant in early March on clearance bc the gardener said her assistant over-watered them so they could end up developing root rot. She suggested letting the soil dry out for weeks before I water.
      Also, the plant in its original nursery pot was overcrowded. The gardener suggested that in maybe a month or so, I separate & repot them.
      When I finally took the plant out of the nursery pot, the roots seemed fine. I tried my very best to be as careful separating the root tangles as much as I could. I was able to make 3 new pots. As the plant started to sag, I added support to help them. But now the stems & leaves are rolled up & changing color. At first, I thought maybe the roots & the plant were in shock from being separated & replanted. But now they're just looking very sad & not getting better...
      I gave one new pot away to another plant mom friend. Her set doesn't look as bad as the two I kept. & I did inform her about the original plant's condition. My friend was able to inspect her plant's roots.She said they definitely developed root rot now🫤After watching some of your videos, I cleaned up the roots from as much soil as possible, trimmed off any crispy edges on the leaves & removed any bits I thought wouldn't recover. Then, I placed them in tap water in a clean jar, making sure the water was right above the roots.
      A day later, they don't look any better, but not necessarily worse.
      any ideas or suggestions?

      @@BirdHouse89 they are definitely a challenge. At that state, it may be tough. I’ve even tried covering with a plastic bag to keep up humidity. Just keep an eye on the root area. If they all start to rot, I’d remove them all and treat it as a cutting and hope for new roots. But lease how she does. Again, they are such challenging plants. Positive thoughts. 🙏🏼👍🏼🪴

      @paultheplantparent2702 thank you so much. I will definitely keep you updated with my FishBone Prayer recovery journey... On a happier note, I've also transferred my Syngonium Allusion to water on the same day I started the Fishbone recovery (4/27) & she spouted a tiny new water root. It lost the lowest steam & leaf, though. However, the remaining leaves seem just fine.
      Question: Your videos suggest not feeding or fertilizing until a few weeks into the transition to water. Do you think I should add something to the Fishbone water to encourage recovery & growth?

    • @paultheplantparent2702
      @paultheplantparent2702  Před 3 měsíci +1

      @@BirdHouse89 it’s a tough call for the prayer plants. I went through long stretches without feed but when they’re already compromised they’re ultra sensitive. I stopped collecting them cause everyday was a day of anxiety for me lol. If you want to try a very diluted feed, probably wouldn’t hurt them.

    I have a question regarding lava rocks. I have a class project attempting to get a grant for an aquaponics system. We want to grow the plants in a five inch thick tray. We don't know what kind of plants to use and we need to use a soil alternative to get the system working how we want it to. I noticed you used lava rocks to grow different plants in the past through some of your older videos. I wans wandering if you have any suggestions for edible plants to grow in a soil alternative with a relatively large abundance of water? and also if you had a suggestion for a soil alternative, like lava rocks or maybe those small clay balls?

    • @paultheplantparent2702
      @paultheplantparent2702  Před 5 měsíci +3

      Both lava rock and clay balls work great but I prefer lava rock. They’re also a little heavier and do better in some setups. Lettuce plants love water. There’s also longevity spinach that could work great!!! It’s very healthy and easy to grow. You can also try basil - a fast grower too. 😃😃😃
