    My husband is on his third week of chemo and radiation for neck cancer very close to where yours was. The side effects are much worse this third week than before and I suppose will only get worse. He doesn't have a feeding tube yet, and we are hoping and praying he can get enough nutrition in without going there. I just discovered your channel and will review more to give me some insight to what to expect. Hope you are still well and cancer free. All the best!

    I’m 5 weeks post treatments for tongue cancer. 6 weeks chemo, 35 radiation treatments. The one thing that got me thru was mixing 4oz of high calorie boost and 4oz chocolate milk. 5-6 times a day. Around 1800 cal/day. At 5 weeks out my saliva has returned about 70% and taste about the same. Food still tastes off but I can deal with it. I notice very small improvements everyday. All the pain in swollowing is gone and can eat most solid food. You will adjust to the new normal. Not the same as before but better than death.

    Hi all, I have also HPV Cancer in 3 areas around the base of the tongue, lymph node and tonsil, It started with ear ache 6 Months ago. I had the CT, MRIs and biopsy which found the Cancer. My mask was made and I began treatment just 2 weeks ago and is ongoing, 10 sessions of Radiotherapy down and 1 Chemo. Weekends off for good behaviour, already lost taste, and ability to swallow anything other than liquid, shakes are Ok but difficult with real food, I did batch cook lots of soups, I know there is worst times ahead, just want to be over, start session 11 tomorrow and next week my second 18hr Chemo, just hope we are able to get through that with not much pain, just wanted to share my thoughts and wish you all well.

    Had stage four back of the tongue cancer 2009. Treatment was chemo and then chemo and radiation together. After treatment carried the water bottle around for the first year or so. every night I use Colgate Gel Cam for about 5 to 10 minutes in trays before I go to bed. This will keep my mouth from being dry up for about 3 to 4 hours. Then I wake up with a dry mouth and take two or three swigs of water and chew mentos gum, keeping the gum in my mouth which helps keep my mouth closed and will last at least another couple hours. If I wake up again, I repeat with the gum and water. Before I left MD Anderson, the head dentist said do not let your mouth get dry or you’ll have cavities and if you have cavities, it may cause your jawbone to disintegrate. Scared the H out of me. They recommended to me the Gel Cam and I haven’t missed a night taking it in 15 years.

    I’m 2 weeks post treatments. 7 chemo, 35 radiation. One thing that really helped me was exercising throat, tongue, neck everyday from week 1. I never needed a feeding tube although it would of been nice at times. I would mix boost with chocolate milk. 4oz each 6 times a day. Still lost 25lbs but it got me thru . I’m 10 days post treatments now and can eat soft foods already. Can’t taste much but it’s getting better every day. Pain in my throat has reduced by 50% and thick saliva is starting to go away. Listen to your speech therapist. The suggestion they give may seem like there doing nothing but it makes a huge difference at the end.

I would fix a pot of beans for him quite often for the protein and he put hot sauce and pico in it . He was on a feeding tube for a year, the only thing he liked was my pot of beans. You are doing very well, it seems. My husband’s damage is significant but he’s grateful to be alive. The treatments though have also caused permanent side effects, such as ED. It’s extremely hard for us both but he’s terrified to take any meds for it.

    Thanks for a wonderful run through of what you have gone through. I can tell everybody that you haven't sugar coated it and yes, everybody's symptons and treatment will be different. I was lucky in one way because although I was told that I would not be able to swallow and that I would lose my speech for a time....well, I didn't lose my swallowing power totally so I thank god for that because it has made it a lot easier on getting back to normal. I had 30 sessions of radiotherapy only over six weeks on my neck and tonsil area where the cancer had got into the nodes.....but a lot of what happened to you did happen to me. I am 3 weeks post therapy at moment....the soreness and ulcers in mouth are gradually going away but the lack of saliva and dry mouth are still with me which makes eating difficult at times and so I do resort to using the feeding tube in my stomach and the special bottles of food which have been supplied to me by the hospital. Your description of the mask is spot on...I am not claustrophobic but I hated it and especially when I felt the last click of the buttons which held you down firm for then that was the time I wanted to swallow the most.... so when the radiotherapy machine started doing its business I used to count the number of whirring noises it made and then I knew how far I was from being released again from the mask. Thank you and good luck to you for making the video and to everybody else who is going through a similar experience...YOU WILL COME OUT THE OTHER SIDE OK...BUT IT MAY TAKE A FEW MONTHS.

    One of the most frustrating things i hear is people claiming they have a cure for cancer but just won't release it. Such nonsense, Cancer cost the economy , Pharm making money doesn't help the country. If the was a cure someone would of licensed it and made possible trillion. Even you or i would pay privately £5-10,,-20k to live. Having a cure doesn't mean the wouldn't be cancer . We have antibiotics , that get used by everyone

      This angers me too. And like you said we have antibiotics as well. And they say there's no money in a cure but there's no money in dead people either. Also, some skin cancers can be cut straight out of you to completely eliminate the threat. Technically curing the cancer for a low price. How does that factor into "big pharma"? I just hope this medication works and is a massive game changer in beating cancer

    Hi Lee! I think you missed a class of medication that this drug (probably) falls into: small molecules/TKI's. These are already widely used as a form of cancer treatment and they (mostly) target proteins, often quite specific to cancer cells. Examples include CDK4/6 inhibitors for breast cancer, ALK inhibitors for lung cancer, PARP inhibitors for BRCA mutated cancers, etc. The side effects can differ widely between the class of medication!

    Hi Great video ! I had base of tongue cancer caused by HPV ! I had 6 weeks a radio and the pain after was indescribable ! I never left the bedroom for 3 months ! I lost nearly 3 stone ! I did have a PEG and that saved my life as no way could I eat for months ! I was on morphine every 4 hrs which helped a bit but not that much to be honest ! 1 year on and I still have no taste but I have put weight on ! the journey has been very very tough you cant sugar coat it the pain was horrific ! I have appts every 6-8 weeks where I have the camera to check all is clear and up to now it is but if I am unlucky and it does return I could not go through that again no way ! I was told I have a 90% chance of survival as it was HPV so my chances are really good !

      Hi Rice, For some reason it seems that HPV related throat cancer seems to be more treatable, I wonder why that is? Some thing to look into for sure. I sense another video! Lee

    Hello. Stage 3 HPV positve SCC at the base of tongue. I finished my last treatment a month ago. 70 grey over 35 sessions and 6 chemo sessions of cisplatin. Had my first CT this past week. Results were encouraging. My problem is eating and drinking. I can somewhat taste the food or drink, i just cant bring myself to swallow. Im lucky if i get 30 oz. of water a day snd i haven't eaten a meal in a couple of weeks! This has left me week, dizzy and lethargic to say the least. The meal replacements make me sick to my stomach. Do you have any advice? Thanks!

      @theregularguy141 Před 2 měsíci

      Hi Bohemian, Hmm, that is a quandary. Have you tried the various kinds of replacements? I'm pretty sure there are dairy, non-dairy etc. It could be something easy to fix like that. You may also get a referral to a dietician and explain what is happening. That person may have some more insight. Are you eating through a PEG tube? The swallowing will come.You are only 4 weeks out of treatment. My first sip of water (attempted) was at 4 weeks and I thought I was going to choke to death. You NEED to get calories in as soon as possible. Your body needs that. Definitely discuss this with your doctor as well. Lee

    I am in the beginning of diagnosis. Went to ENT, had 1 CT scan, and Endoscopy. Left tonsil assymetrical and enlarged lymph gland next to it. Going for another CT scan in two weeks and then back to doctor. Lee, did they remove your tonsil before treatment? I don't know if I am up to all this.

      Hi GeriJ, You are very much up for all of this. It is difficult, it is painful, and it is bothersome. HOWEVER, it is doable. You can do it by keeping a solid positive attitude, by leaning on friends and or family, by finding and enlisting the help of support groups, and following medical advice and instructions. (The following advice was hard for me, I'm hard headed...) In answer to your question, they did not take my tonsils out. If I remember correctly due to the margins required for surgical resection of the tonsil and tonsil mass, it would have caused a lot more physical damage. Now, that being said, they have made some spectacular advances with TORS surgery in regards to head and neck cancers. Keep us updated with you progress. Lee

    OMG, have just been diagnosed a few hours ago with tonsil cancer that has spread to neck lymph nodes. So glad I found your videos, am binge watching them. However, I had not considered at all that I may not be able to take my medications. My Epilim is like a bloody horse tablet (well, maybe not quite that large) - I am certainly going to have to ask about that one as I don't want my epilepsy to return.

      @theregularguy141 Před 2 měsíci

      Oh wow Kimt, DEFINITELY check on that. See if it is possible to grind it up and mix with some liquid to push in through the PEG tube. My blood sugar pill was of a good size. the upside to having a minimal appetite and not eating very much was my type 2 diabetes disappeared. Of course in my way i went straight back to eating bad stuff as soon as I could actually eat (mistake), so it has come back. BUT! I am fighting it off again, this time without the cancer diet cheat. Keep us updated with your progress, we are here for you, all of us! Lee

      @theregularguy141 Před 2 měsíci

      Hi, Make sure you communicate that to the technicians when the form your mask and before treatment. There are some drugs that they can administer to help you relax, but it is crucial that you let them know how you are feeling. The technicians in my case really did a great job talking to me as the treatment was going on and also playing some music. That may help. Good Luck and let us know how it plays out! Lee

    As a HNSCC survivor, I have only one very important piece of advice. If your Doctor advises to have a PEG feeding tube, do not hesitate or over think this part of the treatment. IT WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE! You will looses weight, you will become nutritionally challenged, but you MUST continue to maintain a caloric intake. It is imperative to surviving the chemo-radiation treatments, and to making a recovery to normal life. Good luck and Godspeed to all who must face this disease.
