Part 1, posted several months ago, shows an overview of the operation, with the engine doing a spark show while working.
The engine is a 21-75 Baker Uniflow, the middle of the later Baker line of 19-65, 21-75, and 23-90 (drawbar and belt horsepower). Each of these engines produces well over their rated belt horsepower, as was the practice in the days of honest horsepower ratings, with massive torque. The Uniflow design has exhaust ports in the middle of the cylinder, similar to a 2-stroke IC engine, so that power is not lost pushing the spent steam back out through the valve chest, and the valve chest doesn't get cooled off on every stroke. The result is more power, and the ability to run at higher RPM than most steam engines, again increasing horsepower. A smaller flywheel/belt pulley is used to maintain standard belt speed.
This is an old sawmill, upgraded with air and hydraulic assist. The dogs are air set, the kickers are air, while the chain turner and deck chain are hydraulic. The air compressor, hydraulic pump, and edger are all belt driven from the main shaft. The only gas engine is a little Honda driving the sawdust blower. A stationary gas engine like this is permitted within the rules of this Amish community. The laser cutting guide is new this year.

Yes. It has steering brakes instead of Cat style steering rams on the gooseneck. The originals could have the tractor turn around under the gooseneck and squash the driver. Note that this one has a short length of very heavy chain on the steering post to prevent the tractor from turning too far.

These dozers were built by Caterpillar when Caterpillar knew how to build dozers , basic straight forward no electronics to f-----k you up , long lasting and very reliable, I owned dozers 're contracting for many years back in the seventies, eighties and nineties, D 9 G was a very honest machine.

Thanks! Brett at Paper Carttridges YT channel in his great piece on rifling did not mention what machine tools would have been used to cut progressive depth. Cinnabar (YT channel) has a machine like yours, and a slightly newer one, and a curved sine bar! Check it out!
I saw a piece on the YT channel "paper cartridges" detailing that studies in the 1850's concluded that progressive depth rifling made for the most accurate rifle muskets. I'm wondering whether the machine in your video can cut such rifling or whether it was produced when that kind of rifling was no longer needed (metallic cartridges?)?
I hadn't thought about progressive depth, but progressive twist intrigues me, and could be produced easily by using a curved sine bar instead of this straight one. I don't see a way that this machine could do progressive depth as it is.
I truly can’t fathom how these old hot/miss engines can operated at such incredibly low RPM. So crazy to me that you can hear it combust every 4 seconds
Only 15 horsepower yet is effortlessly driving a line shaft machine shop. They may not have much horsepower but these engines got lots of torque

The throttle linkage is visible starting at 6:42. It is a horizontal rod just above midline of the boiler side, with a small lever going into the smokebox, and a bellcrank midway back, to compensate for boiler expansion. Inside the smokebox, the throttle is a row of poppet valves, opened one at a time by a camshaft, rather than a single large valve. This is to avoid a thermodynamic problem called throttling, where a large amount of steam's energy can be lost by passing through a small opening, as happens with a conventional single opening throttle valve. The thermodynamic principle is called "throttling", and it robs power. Lima had a genius engineer named Will Woodard, who performed extensive experiments on steam flow, achieving such large improvements in efficiency that Lima sold their engines as "Super Power", with many comparison tests on the road to prove the difference. The efficiency of these engines was such that Nickel Plate road tested EMD diesels, then bought another order of berkshires instead. These engines were trusted to run as single units to pull refrigerated meat trains worth over a million 1950 era dollars. They normally hauled fast freight at 60 mph across entire 100 mile divisions. The Mars light was effective at a time when there were many unprotected crossings. I watched them back then, it looked like a big light saber slashing ahead of the train.

Paper is subject to humidity and age. It's amazing that is as stable as it is across the width of the roll.
This video was a nice surprise to help break up a long, cool winter. Although not recorded, one of the D8s appeared to be stalled down in the trench. I think they used another D8 to help get it out of there. Mechanical issues???

The best most accurate barrels are cut rifled...
My guess is that engine is running at around 500 rpms or so - The modern aircooled genrators that most have today run at 3600 rpms - they are light and portable - But they drink fuel there runing so fast that much of the fuel is not burnt - the stench of unburnt gas is strong around air cooled generators - also there wore out after runing a few months 24/7 - - My power can be knocked out for months after a huricane or ice storm - I have a old slow speed stationary generator - it runs at 500 RPMs - the rings will last about 8 yrs befor needing to be changed - Yrs ago i ran it for 9 months after a storm - also sence it runs slow most of the fuel is burnt - it generates some were around 17 kws per gallon of fuel burned - Modern air cooled diesels burn 1 gallon of fuel per 4 kw output and the exaust is strong - Most of those old 32 volt hybrid farm light plants were set up so the engine would not need to be overhauled for 40 yrs - thats using a 1200 rpm engine - The battery would last for 40 yrs also on farm light plants - With that slow running engine with a matching set of batterys they expected a 70 to 80 yr service life out the engine and batterys - I came from a long line of genrator electricians and as a kid there were some in the rural south that were still living in himes powered by 32 volts DC into the 70s - Pole power was 30 cents a kw - but they could generate there own power for a few cents a kw - so they stayed with there farm light plants into the late 70s -

@@SteamCrane each HP generates around 350 watts at 32 volts - there is generally also a loss to belt transmission - on mine I use an AC generator head and I loose 1 HP to the belts - at 120 AC and above it takes 1 HP to generate 416 watts - In my case my engine is 3 HP and 1 HP is lost to the belts - so I have around 830 watts of usable power - If the counter balance is in the fly wheel verses being on the crank shaft - it's best not to over load them - The engines that have the counter weight in the fly wheel brake crank shafts easily when over loaded -
@@able880 Unfortunately, most of the small old ones have weights on the flywheels.
Mine has the counter weights in the fly wheels - they had learned later on it was better to add the counter weights to the crank at the connecting rod journal - the cranks with the counter weight in the fly wheels tend to brake at the journal in time - It was a common problem for yrs - there were up grade kits for many engines - there were upgrades also to change the main bearings from sleeve bushings to roller bearings - In harsh dirty environments bushings work out better than roller bearings -
