  • The Ashtabula County Antique Engine Club (ACAEC) specializes in big engines. There are 10 big oilfield engines in this 2 section building, 5 engines in each section, plus 3 demonstration drilling leases, each with an engine, plus a big Fairbanks-Morse genset. Finally, an EMD 16-567-D1 Diesel Genset - 9000 Cu In - 1800 Hp - 1342 KW. They all run, although one of the 10 oilfield engines wasn't run this time.
One item of interest to engine people is that they have both a right handed and a left handed Reid engine. The design was probably flipped to put the belt pulley on the "standard" side.
The festivities started about 8:30, and we shot video until it was too dark. The Wick Lease also ran, that will be a separate video.
The coverage isn't uniform, as the crew started at the East (right) end of the building, starting engines in order. Thus engines in the West section got started later, and I didn't get as much video of them. West section engines start at 8:17.
The open flame hanging lanterns are called Yellow Dogs, as they look like 2 glowing eyes. They were used for lighting at wells before electricity became available, and are a tradition among oil field engine collectors.

The show this year was hurt by weather, and the fact that this year there was a schedule conflict with a nearby Amish steam show. Normally, the 2 shows are on different weekends, and there are more people. Also, like most shows, Sunday is always down, as exhibitors head home.

It used to be a smallish show, but it's now a destination. Most years even better than you saw. The flea market is usually great, but a lot of dealers gave up because of the rain forecast, which hardly happened. As usual, I came home with some neat stuff.
Normally, there is some steam, but this year, the calendar messed up, and ACAEC conflicted with the big Amish steam show not far away, normally 2 different weekends.
