No wasted motion, no wasted time. Always moving.
A couple good operator tricks - clearing the bucket with a little flick of the crowd, and dumping before stopping the swing. The latter reduces wear, as it avoids the swing clutch and drivetrain wear of stopping a loaded bucket.
Like most Northwest shovels, this 25 has crowd assist, which transmits the hoist digging force to the crowd via a cable passing over the left point sheave, down to the crowd drum at the base of the boom, thus pushing the bucket into the cut. It's a bit tricky to run, as crowding out causes the bucket to move up, and rehaul lowers the bucket. Easy to two-block the hoist if you aren't careful.
This is the grandson of the previous owner, who has spent quite a bit of time on the machine.

I remember this. Raynor thought there was a problem with the Northwest causing it to smoke. The smoke is coming from the coal fired Thew on the other side of it!

This summer I might take a stab at running a front shovel. Some hand, foot and eye coordination there but most importantly, time in the seat.
