  • The central power of most rodline well leases had a stationary gas engine driving a separate eccentric "power" via either a flat belt or driveshaft. All-in-one pumping units like this one were less common, and most seem to have been built by Pattin Brothers of Marietta, Ohio, as the "Ekonomy" brand. There is a clutch to allow starting the engine without load. This engine was designed for unattended operation, with a circular oil channel around the crankshaft, feeding oil into the crank pin. It is rated at only 10 horses, but those horses would have been 10 Belgians.
Whenever possible, the central power would be located in the center of the field being pumped, with rods radiating out in all directions to the pump jacks. Thus the load on the power would be counterbalanced. The engine would be covered by a small pump house to protect against weather.
This engine ran off the naturally occurring "stemgas", natural gas that accumulated at the wellhead.
I will be posting a Short of starting the engine.
The thumping sound is the big gray engine running in the background.
