This combined gas engine/air compressor is intended to pump starting air for large compressor engines. It is very compact, since the engine and compressor are at opposite ends of a common cylinder, sharing a single piston. A crosshead maintains piston rod alignment in the cylinder.On the outside of the building is an exhaust barker, which provides audible indication that the engine is running, to allow a single person to monitor many engines spread out over several square miles.The Farrar & Trefts steam engine was converted to run on air, and was located about 2 miles from this pump house.
