    She was just at the grasp of becoming world famous. And she would have for sure been the biggest and most beloved artist of all time. Because not only was she extremely talented and physically beautiful, but she was a very beautiful person on the inside, beautiful qualities, humble and loving. She was too good for this world. She was an angel on earth.

    Worst musicians in the world? Dictionary Definitions from Oxford Languages · Learn more noun a person who plays a musical instrument, especially as a profession, or is musically talented. "your father was a fine musician" They all played multiple musical instruments. It does not seem realistic to deny they were "musically talented" due to the volume of compositions, the attendance at shows, the sales of records. About every measure of "talented" would be defined by those that appreciate your talent. By that measure they have few equals. Quincy should have been more specific, but perhaps he was craving attention.

    I don't mind auto-tuned vocals where it's obviously done for effect. But I would rather listen to a naturally out of tune singer than an artificially pitch corrected vocal performance, especially in performances where the singer is supposed to sound natural. Case in point is Judy's Carnegie Hall version of Over The Rainbow. Her voice cracks in certain parts but it's so emotionally affecting. It's the sound of a person in her later years coming to terms with a lifetime of pain and heartbreak but still hanging on to the belief that somewhere over the rainbow lies her redemption. That later performance, much more than her youthful rendition, is for me the definitive version.

    The Beatles were lucky to have an open minded Producer like George Martin who knew their talents and skills. They were singer/Songwriters playing their own songs. They recorded their first LPs in only a few days. The result was perfect - as we all know. And they were able to play all songs live on stage, at least until Sergeant Peppers. Who would have needed professional musicians? None of their Songs would sound better if it were played by studio musicians instead! Since the Beatles no more composers, arrangers and big orchestras (and conductors) were needed to create successful pop music! And they were the role-models for a whole new generation of musicians!

    At the time he said this quote, Quincy had a documentary to promote. One of the easiest ways to get attention from the press is to say something negative about someone who is more famous than you are. Also, I once heard Paul McCartney in an interview asked about his guitar playing. He basically said he wasn't a professional guitar player (I'm pretty sure he considers himself a pro bass player though). He said he could play the songs he writes on guitar but that he was not up to the level of session players on the guitar. I think these guys had somewhat realistic understandings of their instrumental abilities. I also recall John saying that he was no Eric Clapton but that he could communicate with his guitar which is what music is anyway.

  • @rembeadgc
    @rembeadgc Před 16 hodinami

    Sure, it was hyperbole, but probably true from Quincy's perspective. His "world" was the world of professional musicians.; the cream of the crop. So, in that world they probably were the "worst". Even Bill Bruford said that the English sense of musicianship, when it came to rock, was different from the American. He said that many British rock musicians avoided high technical proficiency for fear of sounding unnatural or being pretentious. In the States, where, showboating was expected, you'd better have the chops and be willing to display them.

    Instrumental performance in pop music usually requires less technical skill than it does in hard rock and heavy metal. As musicians, the Beatles were technically equal to anyone in pop, but far superior expressively. Music has little meaning without expressiveness. That is often why, when guitarists are doing Beatles covers in CZcams, they use Beatles studio recordings as backing, or actual Beatles isolated backing tracks. When they are brave enough to play solo, they fall flat on their faces.

    Nice vid, Fil! Quincy Jones is hell of a composer and producer. Buddy Rich was an exemplary drummer. Attaining their degree of technical proficiency did not make them the arbiters of excellence for all things musical. The listening and record-buying public all got a vote, too. We said the Beatles were great, and Glen Campbell, too. They were very popular, and that's why they call it POP music, innit?! If all it takes is technical proficiency / skill. then I should be rating Lawrence Welk well above the Beatles, as many still do. However, that music does not appeal to me, however flawlessly executed, so I don't like it. There is little in the way of objective reason for WHY - it's a matter of preference and opinion.

    I mine the depths of CZcams for video treasures and analysis of PMG I’ve never seen or heard before. I grew up In Kansas City and had heard about him in high school. (He was well on his way by then.) I was in California in 1981 serving in the military and he was coming to town playing everything up to then, but Offramp was coming out and new songs were featured. I was swallowed everything from then on - hook, line, and sinker. Saw PMG live eight times, and his Side Eye tour in KC last year. We are blessed to share our lives with a modern day musical genius, composer, and guitarist. I still can’t think about him without Lyle Mays. ❤
