If you can't sing without pitch correction and/or auto-tune then you can't sing.
    This was refreshing.

    Hi Fil,
This was a great analysis. Lukas has such a nice Stylized sound to his voice. He is very expressive and making good use of staccato, vibrato and I was even impressed by his breath control. Really cool funky soul sound… just loved it. Awesome breakdown of all his singing techniques. Great job, and thank you for doing this video… You Rock! Love Ya’ … Debbie ☮️

Fil, really enjoyed your analysis. So enjoyed Lukas, who I was surprised to find out is Danish (he and his group). He can sing, and love hearing his style. I'd like to hear the difference between this performance and one recorded in the studio. Are all the cool nuances of his voice taken away by the record company because as we know, everyone has to use pitch-correction now? Ten years ago, the group was represented by Copenhagen Records (may be still) and then picked up by Warner Bros. I'm curious to hear how the recording industry messes with his voice.

It is crazy that I can hear little bits that aren't perfect. They have always been there but it sounds odd these days since so much music is manipulated. It is something that I just wouldn't have notice so many years ago because it is just a normal part of singing. And the little bits that are not perfect add a bit of texture to songs.

Question Fil… after watching this video, it got me thinking 🤔... now that there's more awareness of the use of pitch correction, couldn't artists just use more selective correction of “flaws” so that the vocals are just above/below the lines (where necessary) to maintain the appearance of having a natural, almost perfect voice ❓

I heard Steve Winwood’s recording of Valerie yesterday, and couldn’t help but notice how it seemed like he kept hitting the last syllable of the name bang on with no vibrato. Can’t imagine it was auto tuned or corrected back when it was released. Perhaps they caught the best take of that phrase and just re-used it throughout?? Would love to hear your analysis of it.

I’m grateful the algorithm dropped your channel into my recommended videos. Thank you for your service to humanity. It’s really sad that auto tune and pitch correct are removing the expression and artistry from singers. One of the coolest things about the human voice is that the singer is the instrument. They have a unique voice print like no one else and technology is removing that.

Love your channel, so many great examples of artists that bring one to tears with their amazing talent.
Am i doing the math right?
The entire human vocal range is less than five octaves.
Twelve equal tempered notes at 100 cents per note per octave equals 1200.
So less than 6000 quantifiable tones, most of which could never be detected by a normal listener as on or off pitch.
If we use the industry auto-correct standard, it is only 12 usable tones per octave, or less than 60.
If we accept singing and music as art, would we also accept the same arbitrary forced limitation of 60 colors or values on a visual artists palette?
How much expression would be lost, how much beauty?

When you mention that this or that would be pitch-corrected these days, would you consider doing that to show us what things would sound like if they were recorded today? That would make it easier to hear how much is lost in pitch-correction rather than just telling. (Honestly, pitch-correction seems a lot like it's pitch-destruction considering how much everything sounds so canned instead of natural.) Also your videos make it a lot easier to worry less about not always singing exactly on a line. I don't always, and had been beating myself up about it for so long until discovering your videos just a few weeks ago. Showing us how it would sound if songs like this were pitch-corrected would, I think, really drive home how much nicer and more real natural voices sound.

I wasn't a big fan of "7 Years" when it came out...maybe I just got tired of it quickly because it was so overplayed on the radio...so I didn't really have any interest in Lukas after that. I guess I should have given more of his music a chance, though, because I do like this song.

One thing that's really striking about when people sing like this, is that they sing with a melodic line. The hacking and cutting and pitch-fixing totally smashes how the musical phrases work. It really makes a difference when you can actually hear someone sing at least a verse without meddling with the line and the pitch.
The staccato sections are employ glottal stop initiation (I'm not sure if that's the right way to describe it) on the vowels, too, which gives it that even choppier effect. (Fil, you do not do that on your recreation.) It's somewhat standard to the genre, I think, but very effective here to use it especially in that one place!

Just like with jazz solos or guitar solos, isn’t it a little inaccurate or misleading to describe a voice as “a little sharp” here or a “little flat” there. Isn’t that just part of the personality of a voice? What I’m learning from Fil’s videos is that what attracts us to a singing voice has much more to do than with just how accurate and in pitch it is.

I be very interested in you examining a wonderful day you tube star singer /musician. Her name is Emily Linge and her voice is beautiful and her production /rendition of songs is excellent. To my ears there is no auto tune going on but I like to hear your thoughts on her
    Thanks 😊

The fact someone questioned if this is live makes me lose faith in humanity lol. Either that or my ear is better then I give myself credit for. But it's obvious in many areas

Fil! Love what you do man. Please do yourself a favor and check out THEO KATZMAN. His work is genuine, beautiful, and from the soul. You won’t be disappointed. His latest album is recorded all live with minimal effects. He’s one of the VULFPECK boys, and don’t get me started on ANY of those guys. All very talented singers and musicians.

the song itself may not be my cup of tea but the performance was excellent and the guy has a great voice. the song is real simple and doesn't need much but yes the performance is 100% live and fer real. i'm 56 imo opinion no matter how tech advances there will always be ppl. who do it fer real.

Who is that dude? I really like his voice. It was giving me some Amy Winehouse vibes.
