Fil. You have to take into account all the TROLLS and psychopaths. They will PRETEND they don't understand what you are doing, simply to cause trouble. That is their occupation 24/7. If they make you explain yourself over and over again, they think it's funny that they have made you do that. It makes them feel they have power.
Other haters are using "AI" and pitch correction because they have no skills. Those people will also attack you because they feel exposed.

You always make it clear that it's your opinion and are careful to point out when the artist is talented and when the artist may not even know PC or AT was used on their performance (because, for example, the artist is dead 😊) and/or recording company contracts put this stuff out of artists' control. Keep up the good work Fil! Don’t worry about the Stan’s having tantrums because their favorite “artist” turns out to be a commercial product with little talent. No surprise people are sensitive about exposing pitch correction, it’s cause they know their application of it is an act of fraud.

Fil is not accusing artists of being frauds or turning out “a commercial product with little talent.” He’s not saying that the use of pitch correction is fraudulent. You’ve taken his objective, educational, technical analysis and turned it into your adversarial opinion, so of course fans of artists you accuse of fraud are going to take it out on Fil. Simmer down!

Hi Fil - you are charming, and for that reason, the vast majority of comments are supportive. You also have a huge number of subscribers and views, which shows how many people enjoy your content. I’m pleased that you actually get so few troll comments. My point of reference is that I once commented on a generic, unbranded ‘health supplement’ video. I was given some wrong advice and took far too much, which caused my blood pressure to be dangerously high, and my doctor considered hospitalising me. I simply pointed this out as a comment, telling my story, without judgement. I was respectful and kind, simply asking people to be careful. From that one comment, and it’s not even my video, I must get one troll comment a week. So, it shows how wonderful your delivery truly is Fil that you get so few trolls.

Hey man, don't let yourself be dragged down this rabbit hole. We live in times where objective facts and rational thought does not apply to a large group of people. Do your thing that so many of us enjoy and, how do you put it, rock on!
Problem is, most people can't accept their certainties and beliefs being destroyed by facts. So when this happens they'll get defensive and childish.
Just ignore them and go your own way. Your work is 100% honest and objective.
The first of your videos I watched was an analysis of Dolly Parton. I think at the time I was randomly watching so-called reaction videos or vocal coach videos and this one popped up in my feed. I looked at your thumbnail, made a judgment and fully expected Dolly to be slaughtered with a few comments about boobs and wigs. I was shocked when it was an in-depth analysis of her talents, talents I didn’t even understand that she had!
I’ve been on and off subscriber ever since, and have always always appreciated the professionalism and positivity shown in every single video I have watched.
Now, I don’t know who is responsible for auto tuning or pitch correcting artists, whether it’s their decision, or that of the record label and whether they even have any say in the matter. But what I do know is that you aren’t calling people bad singers because Those effects are being used, not necessarily. I think that may be where people are getting confused or are being deliberately obtuse.
At the end of the day, I think it’s safe to say simply that the truth can hurt. It doesn’t make it untrue.

I enjoy your videos immensely. You usually start off by saying that the upcoming episode is an analytical piece. Apparently some people confuse analyzing with criticizing.
Fil - I personally wouldn't waste my time replying to what are essentially lies. In today's world, it seems like people lie when the truth is easily provable. It makes no sense at all, however it happens all the time. I am a long time subscriber and in my gut, I feel that you're an extremely nice person. You know your self.
some creators have turned off comments. i was initially surprised. But realized I'm not a creator and sometimes I get nasty, nasty comments on my comments. Can't imagine countless amounts of that behavior..
...nor the pathetic state of someone's life who'd engage in it.
I’m just happy that a professional musician/producer finally acknowledges that some of us can hear and identify pitch corrections.
For years we have been told that if we can hear it, the producer wanted us to hear it, and that it is otherwise not detectable to the human ear.
Well, some of us _can_ hear it, it sounds unpleasant and unsettling, and Fil acknowledges that while showing the evidence clear as day.
To those who are upset by this, I would suggest either ignoring this channel or just listen objectively to one of the pitch correction analyses and see what happens.
Some of us may have picked up on the sound/feel of it by accident, but I wouldn’t be surprised if anyone could learn to spot it, just like any type of ear training.
I don’t you risk anything by learning about this. After all, you’re already hearing the same sounds we all are - you just happen to like it. So you would either just be able to say, “Ah, pitch correction - cool”, or you might be spurred on to find something different. Either way, you’ve learnt something.
352K subs indicate that a whole lot of us appreciate the knowledge you empart. Keep up the good work. Furthermore you behave like a gentleman who has so much musical knowledge that learning from you is enjoyable. I appreciate the fact that I don't have to work my brain around a lot of foul language in the process of my learning. I will stay tuned. You Never are rude about any analysis you do. People being offended that you SHOW their favorite artist isn't as pitch perfect as they think they are, is much like exposing their fearless leader of a cult is a fraud. As the idiom goes, it is easier to fool people than to prove to them they have been fooled. EGO.
There is also the other side to that coin and that is people who never needed any pitch correction or autotuning being subjected to that interference when a track is 'remastered' for a new release. One prime example of that is Take It To The Limit with Randy Meisner which Fil featured about 7 months ago, just after Randy died.

I watch your videos because they're the first genuinely informative ones I've found so far on CZcams. Whenever I try to watch so called reaction-videos, I quit. If somebody doesn't want to be exposed for using pitch-correction, they shouldn't do it in the first place. Thank you for your informative, objective videos and keep up the good work.
I've pulled way back on reactions too. The novelty is gone. Sure was fun at the beginning, though, and I'll sometimes rewatch an old reaction for kicks, as some of them are real gems...

It's ok Fil; the kind of people who would be interested in your videos have sense enough not to take CZcams trolls to heart. I know sometimes they'll strike a nerve and it's hard not to let it bother you, but just try to remember they don't matter; I can't imagine someone's being ignorant and mean being able to affect your livelihood. Sidenote: if anything, sometimes I think you may be too nice - I don't think I've ever heard you say anything akin to "that performance was just plain awful".
"Base your opinion on objective facts." That doesn't seem to happen much anymore. People are more prone to say "my opinion IS fact." - Some people you can't reason with.

I've had some great conversations in the comment sections of videos with people who have a differing opinion from mine. It's always a pleasant surprise to come across someone who's willing to have an intelligent exchange of ideas, and is willing to accept that we have different opinions on a subject. Then there are the people who disagree by immediately launching into a bitter ad hominem attack on me instead of addressing my comment in a mature way. At that point, it definitely is "end of discussion" because I'm not going to waste my time trying to engage with someone like that.
I've never understood the comments accusing you of attacking or targeting artists for using pitch correction. If they are fans of that singer, and they like the way their voice sounds with pitch correction applied, why does you pointing out the PC even matter to them? 🤷🏻♀️

It's not just you Fil, I've just about stopped commenting on youtube about singers because even if my comment isn't critical at all there is always that one troll who gets nasty!
Or there are fans of another singer who insist on putting down the artist and talking up their own favorite! I too get absolutely sick of it. People seem to forget many singers sink their hearts and souls into their work and then give it to the world free on platforms like YT.

Unless you are fawning over Taylor, her fans aggressively defend her. Where does that come from? Everyone likes what they like. The world would be boring if we all liked the same thing. Two times on youtube videos I simply stated a fact, nothing negative about it, I couldn't believe the verbal abuse I received. I doubt either of these people would talk that way face to face. They are cyber bullies and both unsurprisingly had no picture and used a nickname.
The bearer of light is often unwelcome, but so important. Some will scurry into the shadows and throw things. Others will expand their thinking and grow. It's their choice.
Your analyses are brilliant in so many dimensions. You bring new appreciation and meaning to music that we have loved our entire lives.
You honor great musicians. And you expose those who are sloppy or cheat. You are more than fair and objective. You greatly expand our knowledge. You are an incredible teacher.

Beautifully stated, and 100% correct.
If the artist/producer happens to use pitch correction then that is on the artist/producer. Not the people breaking it down and analyzing it so others can understand how or why it sounds the way it does. If they have a problem then they can take it up with their own methods and work on what they have a problem with. Not project on others. Same goes for haters that are too ignorant to understand, or arrogant to bother to try. You're doing nothing wrong, and there's still plenty of people that are appreciative of your work ❤ and not just pointing out pitch correction. That's just a happy bonus that was honestly overdue thanks to artists/producer that keep trying to get away with it or enforce people who don't enjoy it to have to put up with what we don't want to feed into 😤 people can like what they like, but if push comes to shove gatekeepers will get exactly what they give back. Albeit, in a much more constructive manner that speaks the truth so others can know and understand how it really is.
Also don't think people really get how algorithms work. You've got tons of videos, and a good plethora are dedicated to pitch correction. 10/10 if you click on a specific video, like your pitch correction ones, you're gonna get more of those before noticing other video titles until you start branching out and/or yt finally decides to broaden that specific filter bubble algorithm search that is also usually saved within an individuals history. So here's to the ignorant and arrogant that think they know everything when they don't understand algorithms/filter bubbles, and that they're plenty capable of looking into someones feed rather than assume that's the only content that exists 🙃
I think the issue concerning the vocals here is that the voice is the most directly human part of any recording. Everything else is mediated by an 'instrument' of some kind. Of course, a guitarist can put 'themselves' into their playing, but it is still indirect, mediated. People like to think that when they are hearing someone sing they are in direct contact with that person, that it is fully human. The idea that what they are hearing is NOT the actual voice can be devastating. I think this is why you get such an emotional reaction to the vocal analysis, as opposed to any analysis you might undertake of, say, a guitar.
Yeah, ignore the negativity! You explain everything so clearly! Don't worry about those who goad you. They enjoy aggravating you, that's all.
This is my opinion. People need to get thicker skins and a little education wouldn't hurt either. Personally, being a Boomer, I like seeing how things work and music is no exception. Most all of the music you analyze, Fil, comes from my generation and I appreciate that you're taking an interest in showing just how talent, skill and hard work combine together to produce some wonderful music. Keep it up.
As for more modern music, what little that can be found which is actually based on music instead of obscene video tricks and effects, seems to be mostly over-produced digital bit streams anyhow (see how AI will destroy the music industry all together), unless you catch something recorded live, where the absence of digital processing/production is painfully obvious. But, it's an each-to-their-own world with something for every taste (or lack thereof). I just find it sad to watch the demise of real musicians, playing real instruments, and singing with real voices.
OK, 4 mins in and I just wanna say that the PC software is incredibly helpful. Folks get so defensive about their fave artists; especially those who have been widely criticized for their vocals (cough J Lo). Love your analyses, Fil‼️👍🏻👍🏻

Fil, you don't need to waste time explaining yourself. Haters are going to hate and there's nothing you can do or say to make anyone change their opinion once they've stated it. Speak to viewers who understand what you do and how you do it. Just don't waste your valuable time, don't do it. Rock On!

Some of these 'singers' (& i use that term loosely) should be embarrassed and ashamed of their manipulation of their poor vocal quality. Likewise, to the Producers of these acts, who push this nonsense. You do You Fil. This kind of nonsense should be brought to light. IMHO
As a producer, I blame the public for that.
I wonder how many people will complain or dislike THIS video. Because there are people that watch CZcams that will complain about anything. Just to be different; just to cause trouble. They just need to be ignored.
Try to not let jerks get under your skin. You know you do quality work, with good intentions. There are always going to be haters, don't give them any of your energy, that is what they want. Tell 'em to sod off (to borrow y'alls English Slang:)
Ask someone to go through the comments before you watch. Let them remove the negativity.

You can never go wrong when you point out facts, use logic and strive to be objectively accurate. Trying to make sense and explain emotion can be maddening and not worth your expertise. Keep up the excellent work
People don’t like to be exposed and they don’t like their favourite artists exposed. Personally I like to see what’s going on in the music industry and I appreciated your analysis.
You do you. The vast majority of us love what you do. You cannot control the thoughts and feelings of others. Keep on keeping on! (And enough with the ranting...jeez!! 🤣🤣)

I like the "warning" idea! Not sure if it would work though. People are warned not to drive drunk, but they do it anyway. There might be a better analogy, but that was the first thing I thought about. 😵💫

That was very interesting. I enjoy your analysis & feel you never target one person or group. You just show us the facts & we can choose how to respond. We all have differing opinions & it is fine to agree to disagree. Music & artists are such a very personal & emotional thing. I just feel sad & disappointed that artists today feel the need to use auto tune & pitch correction so much.
People are very territorial about their musical likes/ preferences. Keyboard warriors can be overbearing . You're doing just fine. Perhaps have one of your favorite beverages and keep on keeping on. Best Wishes . 🎶
I'd guess that if some of these detractors heard their favorite singers *without* pitch correction they'd probably love them even more (if they're actually good singers to begin with), and they'd *finally* understand what you do and why. Keep educating the masses, please!

I have been watching CZcams quite a bit for about 10 years now. I almost never subscribe to anyone's channel. I only found you a couple of months ago. I love singers and I absolutely love what you do! I hit that subscribe button on your channel my first time here! I have learned more about singing from you than I ever have in my life. I am almost addicted to your channel. (I only wish I could sing.)
One of the things I dig most about what you do, is that you are always positive! There may be some of your videos where you are not positive, but I have not seen any. I know that everyone cannot be great, but you seem to always find the positive in singers. I particularly love the analysis videos of the legends of yesteryear. You confirm my love of Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Ella, Judy ( and Liza), Doris Day, and on and on.
Your integrity is beyond reproach. My advice (for what it is worth) is don't patronize the haters. You're above it.

Hahaha… When I was first learning guitar as a teenager, hammer-ons and pull-offs (legato) was considered cheating when playing fast. You had to alternate pick every note, or it didn’t count.😂 So I got REALLY good at alternate tremolo picking. 35 years later I started playing again, this time seriously. After a few years my FB posts drew the attention of Mitch Perry, the guy who replace Yngway Malmstein in Steeler. He invited me to study with him because he liked my playing, and thought he could help me sound better, which he did.
During my first lesson, he showed me some legato stuff, and I was like “…but that’s cheating!” And he said “Why? If it sounds good, it’s not cheating!”
So I started learning legato, and added it to my tremolo picking, greatly expanding my vocabulary on the instrument. He also taught me how to strum UPWARDS properly, along with down-picking, harmonics, and and a bunch of other techniques I’d never bothered with - and he helped me refine my vibrato.
The one thing that wasn’t allowed during our sessions was amplification of effects. I found this frustrating, but I understand why:
Mitch wanted to hear, critique, and improve MY sound. Effects like overdrive, distortion, reverb, and delay are great, but they can hide fundamental problems with technique, and limit your ability to hear and correct your mistakes. This in turn limits your growth potential.
Auto-tune and pitch-correction are crutches that stunt the potential of singers who rely on them. I personally don’t like the sound they impart at all. It’s too synthetic, robotic, and bloodless. They crush vibrato and along with it, the expressiveness of the human voice. If that’s what the artist is after, well, OK I guess (T-Pain) but it’s not my thing.
It’s performers who front as virtuoso vocalists but rely on auto-tune and pitch correction that are the real problem, because they are frauds. Taylor Swift comes to mind, as do so many other vocalists in the pop music space. Music is about raw emotion and authentic human experience, not fraudulent manipulation to sell concert tickets and merch. So I can understand the outrage about pitch correction in pop music.
It’s not the pitch correction, it’s the lies it enables that are the problem.
You don’t have to defend yourself. You do a great job. There are strange people out there who are going to complain about everything. Don’t change anything Fil. I’ve learned so much from you!!
Fil, I feel bad that I find these videos when you try to politely present facts while not losing your mind to be fun and adorable. Please know many of us are smirking and shaking our heads with you. Fil, as you know from my past comments, I love what you’re doing. But let’s admit it: you’re “exposing“ pitch correction, and making great, in-depth arguments why people should not appreciate it; which is different than just “analyzing” a guitar player’s pull-offs and hammer-ons! Hell, I’ve been in music 40+ years and never realized how prevalent this ridiculous pitch correction and auto-tune tech has become before your videos on the subject. And I loathe it! So again, I THANK YOU !!
Its nice to see how the singers voice responds to the lyrics, mood and music. Flat for sad, sharp for happy. I say that within the range our ears cant really notice. As a singer and player, you are more than a reliable source.
