Thanks for this analysis, Fil. The absolute first concert I attended was seeing Mahalia. My mother was a huge fan of hers, so we all put on our Sunday best and went. My father had gotten seats down in front on the floor in front of the stage. As we got our seats and were waiting for the show to begin, I looked around and the basketball gym was filled to the rafters, and we were the only white people there. Anyway, even at that young age I was mesmerized. This woman didn't need a mic. Talk about belting and rocking those gospel songs! At one point she came forward and sat on the edge of the stage and said "bring all my little babies down here. I want to sing them a song". Down went all the kids and as she sat holding one in her lap... mic in one hand... she sang "He's got the whole world". I have never heard anything like that since. There she was, not 20 feet away singing to we kids. What a memory. As I grew into the 60's and started listening to Aretha Franklin, I couldn't help but notice the influence of a woman I had heard live, many Sundays before. Thanks again for this vid.

Mahalia Jackson should be remembered for her words when Martin Luther King got up to speak at the massive rally in Washington. She is reported to have said “Martin, tell them your dream” and we heard the most powerful human rights message ever. Martin put his notes away and said, “I have a dream ………….”. And it still brings tears to my eyes.
Greetings from her adopted home town of Chicago ❤. Mildred Falls was her accompanist for most of her career and on this track. The "bum note" you refer to is what we call "playing dirty" 😄, a little loose with the hands, common in Black churches.
If memory serves right, Mildred did not read music, I believe she played by ear.
Gospel singers have an amazing amount of passion in their voice; quite different from your more mainstream church music. It's quite an experience.

Her music had soul. No pun intended. Gospel music moves the spirit of everyone listening to it. This lady had that gift and I have always been thankful to hear her music. Great analysis and thank you so much for this.
I think my first exposure to Mahalia was in the movie "Imitation of Life". Really powerful and heartbreaking scene, and I was just awed by her voice.

Flattened notes are characteristic of the blues … so under hitting the pitch is a nice device that gives it that soulful feel … it’s such a joy I never hear the flat notes as being out of pitch ( unlike the organ)

She’s an American treasure to behold. If you can find the movie about WC Handy, it has Mahalia, Pearl Bailey, Nat King Cole and the great Eartha Kitt among others. It’s called St. Louis Blues.
Her faith and her voice is resounding.
I couldn't help but notice that you were smiling throughout the song, Fil. Your analysis of Mahalia Jackson's singing "How I Got Over" was superb. What a voice she had, powerful and full of expression and emotion. Mahalia Jackson was a wonderful departure from the norm for Fil. He couldn't have analyzed a more deserving artist.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far away, well, at least way back in the 60s anyway, Mahalia was a regular on Songs of Praise on a Sunday evening. When she got emotional, which was often, we would all find ourselves getting emotional too. What an absolutely outstanding singer she was.

I'm a big fan of Mahalia Jackson's so I appreciate your wonderful analysis of this great singer.
In her adolescence and teens, Mahalia listened to and greatly admired the great women blues singers of the 1920s Bessie Smith, Mamie Smith, and Ma Rainey, with Bessie Smith being her favorite. Jackson was heavily influenced by musician-composer Thomas Dorsey and blues singer Bessie Smith, adapting Smith's style to traditional Protestant hymns and contemporary Gospel songs.
Although she turned down many offers to sing secular songs, popular music as a whole felt her influence and she is credited with inspiring rhythm and blues, soul, and rock and roll singing styles. Little Richard, Mavis Staples, Donna Summer, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Della Reese, and Aretha Franklin have all named Jackson as an inspiration. Jackson was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the Early influence category in 1997.

There are some mighty fine gospel singers that will never be recorded. Some won't ever sing 'profane' music. My neighbors a few doors away have a revival every summer in their backyard, and I get out my lawnchair and glass of vino and enjoy the concert.
Fil, slavery was abolished in the United States in 1865. Mahalia Jackson's grandparents were slaves, but not her parents. She was definitely born into tremendous segregation and poverty in the South. Great analysis of a great voice.

Actually, it was abolished in 1863 by the Emancipation Proclamation issued by then US President Abraham Lincoln. The Civil War (or War Between The States) ended in 1865.

Ms Jackson appears in the 1959 film Imitation of Life and sings The Troubles of the World in a funeral scene. She brings me to tears every time I watch that scene. Her ability to hit notes in such unique vocal runs is pretty spectacular and seems utterly natural, organic to who she is. She’s gonna sing you into heaven with this recording, given half a chance! ❤
Thanks so much Fil for the reminder. I think the 50's and early 60's are the best singing/recordings of Mahalia. Her music has helped me get through so much in life of 70yrs. Your analysis really tells the reason why! Mahalia singing in Church in the early 60's was an experience I haven't felt since. I lived not far from her home in Chicago, attended St. James AME Church. I think my favorite thing about you, even beyond the vocal and musical analyses (I'm neither singer nor musician), is how much respect you have for ALL forms of music. Even when presenting music from long ago eras, long before you or maybe even your parents were born, you have a lovely smile on your face and are clearly enjoying whatever you are playing. I heard some people say that oldies are moldy - uncool and irrelevant. I can tell you are not one of those people. Great music is great music, whether it was released yesterday or 100 years ago. So many of the old R&B and soul singers started out with Gospel, many singing in church since childhood. It is fundamental part of all the greatest music from the US.

Fil, something I want to add Mahalia was raised in a time when black played music to stay alive music at my own interpretation is a way of God to keep us alive and the black community back then were so terrorised that they express their need to live happy in singing and playing music and God blessed particularly Miss Mahalia with the best voice in that rude time she left in and again what an amazing analysis you have done thank you again so very much and God bless you sweet beautiful British guitarist with such a beautiful face!!!
Hey Fil, it was a big deal for a gospel singer to leave the church and sing secular music, still is kind of. Aretha, Sam Cooke, the Staple Singers all left the gospel circuit to make money. You should do Aretha’s version of this from her live album that she did in 1972 called Amazing Grace. So many good tunes, if not this one, Precious Memories is a great one to do, sung with the late, great James Cleveland. Great reaction!

My mum played our local chapel organ and also played the piano. She played very well and could be expressive, but she couldn't play by ear at all. She's buy the sheet music for the pop songs of the day (1960s) and play them for us kids which we loved. Myself, I've always had trouble reading music but can play by ear. 🙂

She’s featured in the shooting Bible scene with Ozzie David and S.L.J.
I think it’s “In The Upper Room”.
She has a great album with Duke Ellington called Black Beige and Brown. “Come Sunday” is its stand out track.
She was a big influence on Elvis. You can especially hear it yet song “Up in Jerusalem”.

My first concert, like @stertim, was also Mahalia Jackson. I was only 6 maybe 5 so 1956 or 57, at the Russ Auditorium in San Diego. I remember her turquoise shoes and her voice volume. Feel honored to have attended one of her concerts even though, because of my age, couldn't fully appreciate her. Surely appreciate her now.
She's one of the greats! She probably wasn't as big as she could get because she did gospel, but man oh man, sure inspired so many that came after her!

I can’t tell you how much I appreciate these analysis videos. One of the things that distinguishes you not only from videos with people who analyze voice or instruments and from people who do plain reaction videos, is that unlike most of them, you have wide, ranging musical knowledge - context, history, pop culture, all that stuff. I see so many reaction videos, whether it’s from an opera singer or from a clueless teenager, where there is just zero knowledge about the musical piece. And that can be fun, seeing someone react to something for the first time, but sometimes they’ll be a person in their 40s who has never heard some artist and knows nothing about anything. Recently watched a video from a black man in his 20s who couldn’t recognize the black artists in the “We Are the World” video. Could people not educate themselves even a little bit? I get so frustrated. But you know what you’re talking about and you do such a great job, Weather you’re appreciating a great voice or you’re doing a video about how the Eagles totally faked it.
