Having recorded her several times, I can affirm that what came from her microphone was simply stunning. Followup takes were for the finest nuances of interpretation, just as it should be. “I Will Always Love You” was take #4 and every beaming face in the room knew we were done.

Having heard her live in concert...this is what she sounded like...her voice was in front the musicians efforts in a layered sort of way even though she was singing just as they were playing...very crystal clear and crisp...sharp...smooth...imagine there being a physical space separating two bodies of waters moving in unison.... tossing silk fabric in the air and slowly watching it lilt and willow to ground...Yes, it was that profound.

She was the equivalent of a world class athlete, in the very upper tier of the best ever to grace the profession. Certainly born and blessed with incredible attributes and skills, her accomplishments no doubt also stemmed from the influence of others and a personal work ethic. The complete package making her legendary.

And would be singers take note…. She’s NOT doing all those ridiculous overdone runs at all…. She’s quite married to the technical melody of the song. IMHO…. Yet incredibly overwhelmingly….total perfection.
Her choice not to (over riff) even though if anyone should, she should, is part of why I had more appreciation for her skills.
What you describe has a name. “Melisma” has got to be the coolest word for something I totally hate. And you’re correct. Whitney did NOT do that with this gorgeous, heartfelt performance, despite some clueless criticism I heard from people after the session. It didn’t belong, so she didn’t do it. She was a masterful singer.
My friend was a sound tech when Whitney performed in Baton Rouge and said her voice was so powerful she didn’t need a sound system! He never said that about any other singer for whom he did sound.

Sopranos can really sing loud and can be head at the farthest seat. Whitney is a soprano, I believe.
I'm not a sound tech, but one summer break in college, I worked at an entertainment venue in LA and passed by Patti La'Belle singing. Her voice was insane, it filled the room and she wasn't even singing directly over the mic. Some people are just gifted.
@@lynetteminute Oh, I'm a huge fan of Patti LaBelle, she's such a powerhouse. Her vocal abilities are INSANE for her age. They way she could still sing way into her 60s is mindblowing. The only other pop artist I personally can think of on the top of my head that may come close to her in terms of keeping up her vocal abilities through aging is Celine Dion. Patti is a living legend, she's a treasure.
I's very unfortunate Whitney did not manage to maintain her outstanding voice like Patti and Celine.

Yes, she sang for hours daily, as did Celine Dion. She made her machine so perfect she had ultimate control over it. Add that to natural talent and you have genius.

Years later I provided the broadcast music mix for an awards show on which Celine Dion sang. Same damned story. The producers insisted on her track’s playback vocal for the live TV feed - the pussies. As soon as we were rolling I soloed Celine’s microphone, knowing she would be singing live just for her own professional dignity. Her delivery was absolute and total perfection in every way, not the easiest when you’re hearing another version. Celine Dion, despite the shock of @penelopelopez8296 is very much Whitney’s peer as a singer. Simply amazing.

Saw Whitney 5 times, including in '93. She was absolutely flawless and untouchable at that time. Had lost a little by '99. Still the best ever to do it.
I can not listen to her without tearing up. Her voice just does something to my heart. She is undoubtedly, for me, the best vocalist of all time. It was never just her voice, it was the way she used it to convey emotion and make you feel it. I truly adore Whitney.

Whitney Houston was a vocal prodigy and her voice is the platinum standard of what all female vocalists should be. Whitney's rendition of the star spangled banner is noted by critics as being the definitive version of the national anthem in the history of the song. There aren't enough superlatives to describe how awesome Whitney was. I loved the way she sung live. Whitney could interpret a live vocal performance in many different ways and make it sound better than the studio version. Her ability to play with melody was absolute genius.
And that recording of Star Spangled Banner, she had only listened to the backing track moments before and did that recording in one take. Ricky Minor was like "did that just happen?"

Her pitch accuracy was insane. Are we sure she was human?
In fact, many many singers possess impeccable pitch, which is only one of her mountain of skills. I also recorded her Super Bowl performance of the Anthem. A football game is a horrible place for music. Imagine singing with a very strong 1 second delay. She simply insisted, as in ‘do it or I’m outta here’ on singing live and a floor monitor was provided. Knowing the NFL, they broadcast the playback, which was also coming from my truck. The point I’m slowly making is that her live vocal was exceptional. It is the one you heard a thousand times on radio as the Iraqi army was shocked and awed into desert sand. A very strange time in my personal history.

I had the pleasure of seeing this performance Live. She had a natural talent but she definitely demonstrates that you need more than talent to be considered one of the best vocalists of all time. She put in the work as well. I've seen great singers use their hands just like you've pointed out, however I didn't put the leg movement to the chest expansion. Bravo! ‘Perfect’ is what we hear on the radio from the wretched Antares tuner that radio programmers have shoved down our throats. Whitney’s pitch was way better than ‘perfect’.

Nuture meets nature to the max. Beyond Gifted and coached by her mother , sang in the church from a young child, extraordinary disciplined, a hot house flower groomed for success , and whether you Like Clive Davis or not he masterminded her image and songs for her that suited her voice her range and lead her to superstardom. He personally took 2 years to find the perfect songs for her. No other exec would have done that and he knew how special she was. With all that behind her, she had the spirit of the creator with her when she sang. Transcendent.
Watched her at Wembley- twice- in the 80s, she was simply incredible. Felt so saddened by the path her life took later in her life.

when I was stationed in Germany in 1991 I watched on TV as Whitney sang the National Anthem at the Super Bowl and I kinda knew I wouldn't hear a better rendition at any time going forward. And I haven't. Whitney was something else.

A perfect example of hard work, yes a natural talent plus she had perfect pitch like her mother. Her verbrato is her voice signature. I'll never forget that! I was in the kitchen cooking, and I had to stop what I was doing and go into the living room to see and hear her perform, and I was blown away!! She did the best version of The Star Spangled Banner that I had ever heard!! I was floored!!

I think you’re right. It’s a mix of talent and technique. I always found it intriguing that her jaw moved with her vibrato. Her tone is beautiful. I think there’s a lot to be said about a natural voice with its beautiful flaws vs something mass produced with no character. I was never a huge fan of the music style, but Whitney’s voice pulls you in every time.

I would love your analysis of Whitney Houston's singing of the National Anthem in 1991. So many incredible singers have said no one will every hold a candle to her rendition, and since I love Whitney, I'll agree, although I have absolutely no musical knowledge (in fact, I'm completely tone deaf). The National Anthem is, as so many have said, so very difficult to sing, but she's the one who nailed it and her rendition will never be equaled. I'm sure you'll have no problem searching and finding many YT videos of her performance and, perhaps in comparison, the performances of others.

It's not just the voice, but her musicianship, her charisma in vocal improvisation. All singers who have the proper technique to sing her songs, they just sing the album version. Glennis Grace sings the same version every time, she can't improvise at all. But Whitney never sung any song in the same way in her lives. Every time you hear a new version of every song, and this is Whitney's musical genius. I never heard any singer to sing with her unique phrasing. She is a godess! For instance, the version of I Have Nothing in South Africa is brilliant!!!! Also, her passion and the soul in her singing, the blues and the gospel idiom she had, made her unique. Whitney was a real charismatic genius, she had a gift from God, she always said that!
Advice for singers: Study her impro and phrasing and make her songs your own.

Was never a huge fan of her music, however… no two ways about it, she was a phenomenal talent, and a beautiful soul, lost far too soon! So amazing listening to her solo, minus the music. This illustrates the problems with isolating live vocals, what with all the bleed thru of audience and instrumentation, causing odd flutters and warbles. That aside, wow…! Reminded yet again how incredibly talented she was!

Plus I have to add - this is not an easy song to sing. It changes key multiple times and it's certainly not one that most people can just sing along in the car with - even the studio version.
Then in an instand she can sound totally intimate like a croon in the ear,without losing any momentum.
I've watched the video dozens and dozens of times - maybe hundreds of times. Always stunning, but the isolated vocals you present here are another thing altogether. Chills and tears. What a vocalist and interpreter of emotions she was. A gift to us all. Thank you for sharing this!
One cannot forget the instruction that Whitney Houston received in the African American church. The New Hope Baptist Choir (her mother was the choir director) is renowned. The range and ability to sustain notes is something that is very commonly seen in best lead singers in those choirs. The rehearsals under superb choir directors and singing week after week really strengthens the voice, especially if the singer’s voice must soar over an entire choir of male & female voices. The prime examples of that church instruction would be seen in famous “cross over” singers such as Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, Gladys Knight, Chaka Khan, etc. Here is a young teenaged Whitney soloing over the full choir:

Let’s not forget THE MOST IMPORTANT THING that singing in a choir teaches you: TO LISTEN! And that is the difference between old singers and the new ones, the new ones DONT HAVE AN EAR! And if you can’t HEAR the music it makes no impact how long you can hold a note or how loud you can sing. HEARING the music allows you to direct your voice as a part of the music and not just shouting over it (Demi Lavato, Christina Aguilera, all of them. They have strong voices, but they don’t listen. And that’s why they run all over songs, and artists like Whitney and Aretha did not. They were IN SERVICE of the music, not in the way of it. )
Chaka grew up in the Catholic Church which doesn't have the same musical influence at all though

Whitney Houston was, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful singers I've ever heard. She was another beautiful woman with a beautiful voice who was taken away from us at such a young age. I enjoy listening to her songs and loved watching her in, The Bodyguard and The Preachers Wife. I dont know if she did any other movie or not. I'm sure had she lived, we would've been blessed with more beautiful songs to enjoy. May she RIP.
Known throughout the world as 'The Screamer'. Listen to her when she hits the high notes her pitch is very hard when it should be soft. If you want to hear somebody do what I am saying listen to either Mirusia or Sonya Isaacs. They are perfect at this especially in a C6 high.

@john I was just coming in here to say the exact same thing. People forget over time and in this case it should not be forgotten. Whitney is a perfect example of how you can have everything and still kill yourself with drugs. Yes. She wasn’t “taken” from us. She was a drug addict and killed herself with them. Just because she was a beautiful singer and beloved by millions doesn’t change the fact that she was a druggy. The only difference between her and a commoners drug death is one died in an ally in their own puke and one died in a royal bathtub.

I can't believe it's been 10 years since she died.😔Hers was a voice for the ages, and she left us with a catalogue of outstanding recordings in multiple genres. She was also stunningly beautiful, which didn't hurt her career, but it's her magnificent instrument and hard work that were primarily responsible for her success. It's a tragedy that she struggled with untold personal demons and eventually succumbed to her addictions like many an artistic legend before and since. R.I.P. Whitney 💐

In my personal opinion, Whitney was the greatest vocalist of all time. Her voice blows me away every time I hear one of her songs.
How she held a not and kept her vibrato on the line is beyond me. I was in the Army serving in Frankfurt when her 1st album came out and it was a big hit in Germany. I fell in love with her songbird voice instantly. Fil thank you for doing an analysis on Whitney. She was a true treasure and it was a shame what the end of her life came to.
I get total body goosebumps listening to her sing. How sad that we lost such a treasure to drugs.

Love Whitney, she is so at ease and fluid. Changing the phrasing and interpretation of the original songs when she sings. The emotion and soul is on display that draws the listener in.
