Lol, so were the Eagles back then! The issue is that these 75- to 80-year-old dinosaurs have to go out on world-wide tours and "sing" night after night. See the problem?
I'm sure Adele or Rihanna or Beyonce can really sing in concert. But as Whitney Houston once said, it's impossible to dance and sing at the same time. So what is Beyonce doing?
@@aquamarine99911 point is, they didn’t have computerized gadgets and electronics to mask any lack of skill. In the 70s you either knew your instrument and vocals, or you didn’t, there was no computer to adjust your lack of ability. I saw the Eagles more than few times, you won’t see another band like that in your lifetime, I can guarantee you that !
And how do we master a craft? Well, I think you perhaps one might have some natural talent that is refined through devoted practice, and most definitely in Carol King's case as a product of this practice, one develops proper technique, and with that technique, you can create your own singing style. Practice is essential folks, and it never ends if you want to maintain your skill level in whatever your endeavor is through the course of your life. This is real music! It's a form of creation; never to be re-created. Much of the music of today is auto-generated. It's computerized. It's made by a machine; it's not human. Today's music is information fed by a human into a computer, then a computerized form of music is generated by said computer. It's no longer human. It is computer generated.

The absolute purity of these old performances frankly makes me want to cry. There's no going back to this. Anymore than there is the Horse and Carriage. I'm just grateful I was alive to witness this music as it was at the time. Thank you Wings of Pegasus for bringing a new audience the truth of the past.

There are some who can still sing - Floor Jansen, Angelina Jordan and Tori Holub all are amazing and don't pitch correct.
There are tons of fantastic artists out there today writing and singing their own material. Nina Nastasia, Laura Viers, Agnes Obel, A Fine Frenzy, Shara Nova of My Brightest Diamond, Sufjan Stevens, Angel Olson, Poppy Ackroyd, Neko Case, Eleni Mandell, Dylan LeBlanc, Kurt Vile, Holly Throsby, The Staves, Iron and Wine, Rachel Grimes, Satah Kirkland Snyder, Jenny Lewis, Nancy Elizabeth, Olöf Arnalds and Hannah Peel's achievements seem to go unsung. Anyway yeah its all still evolving.

From about 1970 to 1983 I was either in high school, working or in university, there was a ritual when I met someone, I would ask to see their record collection.
EVERYONE had Tapestry.
They might have been into Rock, Hard Rock, Metal, Punk, Jazz or Classical; they all had Tapestry.

finding the combination of songwriting, lovely pitch and tamber, dymamics both in voice and piano. The combo leads to the deep artistic expression. It is understandable to be concerned that we aren't seeing this in modern music. Realistically it is cheaper to comp it together using various sources including artificial ones.
Because Carole is influenced by her feelings and it just gets transferred by long honed skill the listener can feel it.
One of the best things about a performance back then was ,the audience clapped for the introduction and then clapped after the performance was over. People today as rude. Clapping along (off time) ,singing and yelling out during a performance . If you watch any performance from back then everyone sat quiet and enjoyed the performance
This is a BBC performance . The stage crew had to throw a bucket ( Sorry Bouquet) of cold water on the audience to get a response.
I agree. So many videos of live performances are ruined by the audience yelling all the way through it.

Yeah man, music lovers of today have no idea, not a clue what real live music is. It was everywhere. Great concerts every weekend. Tickets less than $5.00 Great and appreciative audience as well. Remember when you could sit until the end of the show, you had your own space. No raised cameras!!!!!!!
I was lucky to be a teenager in this time. I still believe "Tapestry" is THE greatest Album of all time.
Now there is someone singing with a FULL voice from the gut to the head. No whispering, No mic with the gain turned up.
Actual singing :) And she is moving about and playing the piano. She's not "acting" and posing for the camera :)

Plenty of quiet, whispering songs. Not everyone needs to be belters. The key is changing the dynamics allowing some parts of the song to be quiet and other parts full-on.

When she was 4 her parents discovered she had perfect pitch and could name a note correctly just by hearing it. Four!! Just think about that. Musicians brains work differently from we mere mortals. I'm in awe of such talent.
It's not uncommon at that age, if a kid is exposed to music and taught. The uncommon thing is retaining that into later years in a useful form.
...and then went on to be such an amazing WRITER as well.
Naming a note means nothing, because you need to know what that note/pitch is called before you can say what it is.
But copying that note on the piano, guitar, voice is another thing, which is what perfect pitch can do.

Carole King was a true great musician, James Taylor too. Carole's distinctive voice was always spot on.

This is the era of the great singer songwriters that were powerful enough to galvanize entire population segments with their talents. It was beautiful in its own right, with very deep music and words that delved into DEEP parts of the human condition.
Truly, the talent to be able to write the lyrics and music to express what one feels is a miracle to me. I'm happy to be able to operate a radio to tell you the truth. Carol King is forever a part of the teen age girl I was in 1971. Same thing with James Taylor, Carly Simon, Rita Coolidge, Leon Russell and so many others. Now I am 70years old and enjoying Fil and his analysis of the music of my youth. I'm sure that Fil is an old soul in a young man's mind! Much ❤ and appreciation.

Tapestry was the first Album I purchased myself in 1973. It is still the gold standard for me. I still have my original vinyl and I treasure it. This is when music was real and did not need pitch correct or anything else to alter it in any way. I miss this type of music. But then I’m old. 66 now. I’m an older person now which just makes me laugh inside because when I hear her, I’m still that 15 year old girl buying her first album with her own money and listening to it over and over and over ❤❤❤
I love how she goes from the aggressive 'so fine' to the delicate 'to see your face at my door'.
When I was a kid in the 60s and 70s, I had no idea that popular music would get so technical and controlled by the engineers. I was so lucky to have these performers on my radio and in my dorm room and in my car. Thank you to Fil and to his followers who send him these great videos to analyze.
I love Carole King's music SO much. I love this song, and the whole Tapestry album. Her voice makes me feel very grounded and nostalgic.
I saw her live a few years ago at an outdoor concert and there were tears all around when she played songs from Tapestry such as It's Too Late with people remembering a more simple and free time
I recall seeing James Taylor in the early 70’s with Carole King on piano and Leland Skylar on bass. They each ended up with great careers

This takes me back to babysitting 12 children who's parents loved Carole King, I would listen to her sing after they all went to bed.

"Tapestry" was a masterpiece and a tour de force album.
I grew up in L.A., and one of the first songs we heard on local radio was "I Feel the Earth Move," in late 1970.
So, when the San Fernando/Sylmar earthquake struck, in the dark of the early morning of 9 Feb 1971, this song became a smash hit in L.A., and likely across the entirety of the seismically active Pacific West Coast.

It's still one of my favorite albums, and there's not a bad song on it.

Carole King is one of the greatest songwriters ever. Tapestry is an amazing album. So Far Away is by far my favorite song by her. She has an overall musical understanding that you just don't see in most musicians in popular music. This song just sounds like a message from an old friend, asking how you've been.
Carol Klein and her husband lived across the street from me when I was a boy. She and her husband Gerry rented an apartment with their little girl on Brown Street between Ave Z and Voorhies Ave in Sheepshead Bay. They had an African American baby sitter whose name was Eva Boyd. She would later record the Loco Motion written by Carole and Gerry. She also changed her name from Carol Klein to Carole King.
It is so refreshing to see Fil smiling and appreciating a great performance again. His breakdown and analysis is so educational and interesting. I always learn something new to explain and help me evaluate my response to the music. Another excellent analysis, Fil.

There can be an added intimacy in listening to songs sung without singsongy techniques, where them “performing” takes a back seat to them sharing a story in a song.
9:07 Oh, all these years and I never could pinpoint what was different to me about her voice compared to other singers. It's that she doesn't do that vibrato thing all the time! The funny thing is, she's not my "favorite" as far as how her voice sounds to me. It sounds a bit nasally. But not in any bad way. That is her voice, and she is perfect at it. She knows how to sing a song in a way that gets all the emotion into it and evokes that emotion in the listener. I've heard this song a million times and have even sung it in voice class. But she still makes me teary eyed, hearing this. That is a gift.
Thanks for drawing attention to the music/playing, too. I'm a singer, so my ears always pick up mainly on the voice.

I saw her in 2019 in NY C Central Park for a Global Citizens concert festival. I was in the artists/VIP section (I’m not a VIP 😂) and when she hit the stage, MANY/MOST of the acts backstage came out front to watch her set. The most popular performer to the performers. Respect! ❤

Lovely analysis Fil. Carole is the best, there'll never be another with her abilities. Everyone I knew had, and loved, Tapestry. We had a group of us who loved music of all types (2 went on to be pro players and 2 became sound engineers) and we must have studied and played all of it, trying to work out how those songs worked so well. And as much as we learned I think we only scratched the surface because the more I've listened to them over the years the more I hear. They're so well constructed, so well arranged (even when they were originally arranged quite differently for someone else), so sensitively played, and so beautifully sung with genuine meaning and emotion. Every song is your favourite as you listen to it - until the next one starts and replaces it. Incredible!
There are musicians today that put on a great performance at the local 50-100 seat venue near you. The artists may not be a national act, but they will be live and earn your applause!

@hereigoagain5050 YES... There are many good, less known national and regional acts that are as good or better then the legacy bands of the past. They're disadvantaged because of non-existent radio play/ promotion. You won't regret seeing a real live performance!
My small town has no live venues. I'd have to go at least 50 miles & I have no car.

...when they were married, one day Carol heard their housekeeper singing while she was working and she had written a song for somebody else but talked her into singing/recording it. The housekeeper's name was Little Eva and the song Carol wrote was The Loco-Motion. ❤

The 70's will forever remains the YOUNG decade because of the incredible amount of the new great music that came to life during that incredible period. You can istantly recognize when a picture or a video was taken in the 70's.....the hair...the look...the music....the movies....cars...motorcycles etc... all are a world of their own . Every kind of music was great in the 70's . rock..pop...disco...funk...soul...fusion....folk....jazz. Somebody should create a new country where EVERYTHING relates to that period ...I bet there would be an HUGE line to get into it.
after years of holding 70s prog rock at arms length I have started to listen to random albums and it is surprising how playful and fresh they are especially compared to the one dimensional homogeneity of current popular music. It was an era of great experimentation and musicality. I was stunned when I listened to an album by a band called Lift to find they were teenagers and it was a demo. It was brilliant.
We were saturated in great music then. The radio or turntable always playing. The variety of musicals styles was incredible. We talked about music all the time, watched different performers on TV with our families, listened alone in our bedrooms or with friends and siblings at a concert. And guys always had their air guitars or air drums ready to go! We were so alive!

People often say we see things threw rose tinted glasses but I miss the 70's when it comes to the variety and quality of the bands, artists and music of the time. Don't get me wrong, plenty of great music before and after but for me the 70's were very special.
Great performers do more than hit notes. Carole knows the feeling she wants to deliver and that is sometimes between the lines. Not only did she sing this song, she made it too.

This was my senior year in High School. Tapestry is one of the very few albums I literally wore out and had to replace. Also, Heart like a Wheel a couple years later...what an amazing time for music!

I have loved Carole King ever since I bought Tapestry (along with just about everybody in my generation) and she is one of the best live performers that today's popstars can only dream of aspiring to without autotune and pitch correction...

For me the emotion is conveyed both in the music and the tonality and integrity of her voice. Silky, expressive and honest. Carole is a complete arstist and almost certainly an amazing person. Tapestry is in my top top ten
It wasn't all about looks, but real talent. Al green, the guess who, Aretha Franklin, Beatles, led zeppelin, joe cocker, my childhood memories.
I'm getting such nostalgic vibes listening to Carol sing this song from Tapestry, which I agree with another commenter, everyone had a copy of the album. Those were great times and I don't think we really appreciated them. We were a spoiled generation, we boomers.

I had her "Tapestry" album (or tape ) in the VW bus my boyfriend, myself, and friends were traveling the Country in, and living in Big Sur off and on. Fil, I enjoy watching you enjoy this. You seem young to be such a fan of 70s music like this. The 70s was magic. I was only 10 years old when this song came out but by 1973 I came home from school and told my mom I wanted to learn guitar. She made it happen. I went to university for music on classical guitar in 1979 and became a music teacher. It was the music of the 70s that inspired my whole life.
And that is exactly why I am holding on to all the old LPs I've had for a very long time.

Right there with you, I started high school the following year, and Carole King and James Taylor were both among my favorite performers.
I am a big fan of Carole and Tapestry is a masterpiece of an album. People like Carole, Carly Simon, Neil Young, Jim Croce, Gordon Lightfoot, Roberta Flack, Don McLean etc…it was a great time for music.
Carol King pretty awesome but I think I appreciate the narrator more, his excitement about details and passion for just listening and helping us to understand how to listen on an intellectual level gives power to what we hear.
Gotta say, realizing that I'm 67 years old, is kind of shocking to me. But, the really great thing about that is that I was around to see these great artists who hit big in the 70's. There were concerts on TV every weekend (can't remember the show names) & every singer/band performed. PBS had Soundstage & featured some of the best performers... still remember watching Jim Croce on that show. Ticket prices for concerts were in the $6-7 range which, even though I only made $2-3/hour was very reasonable. I saw dozens of bands in the early-late 70's. So, us 'old folks' really can celebrate all the music we were there for. Joni, Carole, James Taylor, Dan Fogelberg, Alice Cooper, Supertramp, Johnny & Edgar Winter, Jeff Beck, Eagles, Queen, Thin Lizzy, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Nugent..... gosh, the list goes on & on! And, not only were the stars great, the musicians who backed them up were absolutely amazing. Thankful to be 67 & still here!!!!!

I remember when this song came out. I was only 13 but I can tell you that I didn't know anyone who didn't have the Tapestry album. Even the rockers liked Carole King, even as a guilty pleasure. All time great artist.

I was able to introduce her to both my children and later, my grandchildren through her “Really Rosie” animated musical cartoon of the Maurice Sendak book of the same name. That was a lot of fun! I can still sing most of the songs.
I have to believe that there are modern musicians and singers out there with these levels of talent, and we are just missing it.
I have to hang on to that as well. The only thing that gives me hope some days is that I have known non-professional singers/musicians who truly can sing, without any technical tricks. I know it's possible.
Of course there are. Humans haven't changed in capabilities, there are thousands of great musicians out there. It's just the industry and much of the listening public the industry have created that has no appreciation for it. I blame it on the fact that modern popular music is aimed at young teenagers and not mature listeners like it was in the past.

Tapestry was a phenomenon! I played it constantly. I saw James Taylor in the early 70s at the Berkeley Community Theater. He introduced Carole King in that performance. It was wonderful. I don’t believe that Tapestry had come out yet.

When the lyrics have meaning, the instruments support the lyrics and the musicians & vocalists are giving you their best..... slightly sharp/flat don't matter because I am mesmerized by the whole performance; I can get 'lost' in the song. They have taken me to a beautiful place of mind and spirit. Have been listening to Carol and James since this time period. They have stood the test of time!
The piano is truly a beautiful instrument! Others who can blend gorgeous piano with their singing are Jackson Browne, Elton John, Sarah McLachlan, and of course the Piano Man, Billy Joel.

Carole is one of my favorite singers of all time. A lot of soul and emotion that just doesn’t happen in music anymore. Way over yonder takes me on an emotional ride that few songs do. She’s incredible.
