My mum was a trained opera singer (soprano) and one of the techniques she had to learn was to be able to sing full on with a lit candle in front of her mouth without moving the flame. It was all about controlling the breathing from the diaphragm and she was amazing! Her "One Fine Day" from Madama Butterfly blew me away!
But we all need to know if it blew the flame away?
Do you happen to have a recording of your Mom singing that piece?
Wow so cool!
@@LoneRanger100 🤣🤣
I’m learning to sing (I’m 50-ish and started 4 yrs ago). I can sing without blowing the candle out now. That is still an exercise you do! My teacher is an opera singer but I sing gospel, Motown, jazz. It’s all the same techniques. I can hear how very well trained Mr Sledge was at singing. He wasn’t a natural at all. No way. There’s a lot of training in there. Just listen to his vowels.
Gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. Percy brings us to our deepest memories, and tears for what he sings. There are only a few songs that do this, each one a treasure. Thank you Fil.
Thanks for your analysis of these music legends. Percy Sledge was such a great R&B, soul & gospel singer. He is best known for this song "When A Man Loves A Woman" back in 1966. But he had other songs such as "Warm & Tender Love", "It Tears Me Up", "Take Time To Know Her", "Love Me Tender", "Cover Me", "I'll Be Your Everything", "Sunshine" etc.
Love this
dag by coincidience today i looked at the new reissue of ghits think was stax browsing vinly at b and n
I also love "Sudden Stop" - of the same album! All your fav's are mine, too!
I got to see Percy sing this song in a small club called Peabody's Warehouse in Virginia Beach. The stage was barely above floor level, so everyone on the small dance floor right in front of the stage sat on the floor. Live brass and Percy hitting those wailing notes in close confines did not disappoint. One of the most memorable music moments in my life. "It Tears Me Up", "Out Of Left Field", "Take Time To Know Her" - He was great. I guess he was working hard, or the lights were hot, because his silk (probably polyester) jump suit was soaked down the front by the end of the show. (Saw Peaches & Herb there too. Not sure which Peaches.)
What an experience for you! I'm a little jealous, but happy you've got that memory! I agree about the songs you listed, plus "Cover Me" and "Sudden Stop" - all Greats!!
To borrow from John Legend, I love hearing real voices with their "perfect imperfections"
It was a joy to listen to a song that hasn't been pitch corrected! This is definitely a great song indeed, an oldie but goodie for sure! Thank you, Fil, for another awesome analysis! Congrats on getting 365k subscribers! Rock on!
Thanks!
Such a great memory from the 1960’s. Have always loved this song. Thanks for sharing it Fil.
What an absolute brilliant performance.
One of our top 6 slow dance songs (because you could only stack six 45s on a turntable spindle back in the day😊)
Such an awesome singer, story teller. I used to have an 8-track of his songs, I wore it out. Rest In Peace Percy Sledge.
Klaus Meine of The Scorpions is another guy who sounds like he's straining, until you see some video and notice he's casually knocking it out. (Just for us harder rock fans.)
Fil Love this one ! This is the song Kenny and I used at our wedding ! What a beautiful example of a powerful voice ! I have to thank you for this one ! Great analysis video ! Fil, you analyzing Percy brought back so many memories for me ! I totally enjoyed this one ! He is certainly one of the greats !💜
Thank you Fil for your expertise. Percy Sledge is such a classic voice of sixties music history. The words are so true. The love is deep and remains a gem.
What really happened:-
Sound Man: "The mic is stuck on low gain, you'll have to hold it close to your face."
Percy Sledge: "Ok"
Oh man, There are songs made for a singer and singers that are made for a song and this one is both. When Percy belts out those words When a man Loves a Woman, ...there's something more than words and music going on here. You just can't describe that something special that reaches deep down inside, ...whew!
I'm from Australia 🇦🇺 and our G.O.A.T. to the world is John Farnham. He has this natural talent and can sing any genre. I also wish our young performers now could learn what genuine, true vocals and performance are. Bring back live bands and back up vocalists, please.😊 We do have them still here.
My first concert as a kid I was awestruck. There were other performers there but I only remember Percy and now I know why thanks Fil. ❤
I love this song ! Percy Sledge has a great voice. No one can sing this song like Percy Sledge.
Actually met him twice ,great guy sadly missed.

Nice
do you know any of the members of the bands name
One of my all time favorite songs. Percy did a great job of expressing the emotions of lyrics.
Dang, the emotion, rawness, lyrics just get me right from the beginning.
This is one of those timeless songs that even the latest generation has heard being performed by someone somewhere. Though it's provably being corrected to today's "sound standards."
This was my now deceased eldest sister's favorite song ever from the time she was a teenager and it was released. Every time I hear the song, my memory goes back to the times when she'd listen and sing along to it on her transistor radio. Thanks so much for your analysis.
What a coincidence that you did Mahalia Jackson just before Percy. What huge voices they both had!
I was 11 when this came out, mum would play it, it seemed all day, I knew all the words within a few days, wonderful memories of singing along with mum and Percy ❤️❤️ thx Fil ❤️
I remember when this song came out. It was indeed a huge hit. I was just a kid, but I knew that it was a tremendous performance--and, of course, a tremendous song, too. This was and remains a marvelous achievement.
Percy appears in the BBC series Soul Deep. He said he had that song "in his head" since he was a child. Jerry Wexler says, "I heard this song that came out of northeast Alabama, so I had to go there". He brought Aretha and they made I Never Loved a Man/Do Right Woman at F.A.M.E. Recording Studios in Muscle Shoals Alabama.
Got an e-mail from Wings of Pegasus: "Look up les't have a conversation.. "
I'm up for it.
Email, or reply on a post/comment? If it was on here, it’s an imposter. Fil has mentioned them, and I’ve seen a few, and reported them.
Supposedly the song was created as an on-stage stream of consciousness; Percy's girlfriend had just broken up with him. He told the band to back him with blues and let his emotion flow.
Thanks for sharing this great song and voice from the past! I’m so glad you bring these singers to the attention of today’s younger generation!
Hi Fil,
What a huge presence Percy has and such a great song. I so love listening to these great R&B, Gospel, soul singers. They are all such dynamic performers who give their all to capture the essence of a song. And each bring their own personalities and vocal abilities. Whether Percy is singing above lines or below lines, as you said it doesn’t matter, cuz he nails this song. Awesome video and your beautiful smile just makes this analysis all the better! Thanks for doing this one, and congrats on 365K subscribers! You Rock! Debbie ☮️😍
Iconic! In his power, passion, technique, and all his glorious human pitch variability!
He played several times a year in my hometown in Louisiana. He would sing this 3x in a 3 hour show. Great guy from what everyone around this area said.
Why would he sing this song 3 times? Is that what you are saying?
Because it was his biggest hit and people wanted to hear it. The venue was a nightclub. Not a concert venue.
Killer performance and analysis! I know this song is about heartache but this kind of kick butt singing lifts me up. I could listen to this all day long! ❤
Thank you for this. I was a university senior and loved this. I did my practice teaching in a very white high school in a very black city and told them it was my favorite but I was stunned when they hadn't heard of Percy Sledge. But this was a time when white radio didnt play black music. Big hits were often then rerecorded by a white group for white radio. Luckily things started to change but it was an odd time in the US.
The slightly ‘off pitch’ horns in the original studio release of this song is what makes it a real classic!
a superb song played and sung so well with great emotion, control and accuracy
Fil, in the 1960s we all heard these songs on AM radio, through one car speaker. And the music was WONDERFUL. It's terrific to watch you celebrate that same music 65 years later.
My late aunt and uncle loved this song like no other. It was "their song" and it always makes me think of them.
OK, I have to say it!! What a fantastic breakdown and analysis of a phenomenal hit. Just hearing this version gives me goosebumps after all of these years. THAT is what music should be all about. Pure feelings and emotional expression. Thank you, FIL. Once again, your experience and expertise are exemplary and we learn to appreciate pure unaltered vocals because of your insights and instruction. Rock on!🎸🤘🎼💖
Thanks for the kind words!
Percy's voice is so unique, natural, and clear. It was surprising to see that the mike was very close. Those horns are memorable in this classic performance. Thanks!
The horns definitely! ❤
A classic, even as a kid I knew this was an incredible vocal. The only little thing that bugged me even then was the out of tune horn section at the very end. In spite of the out of tune trumpet, this was extremely popular. Nice that in this live version the horn section got it right.
Such a great song, and singer - the memories it brings back! Thanks for the breakdown.. it makes me appreciate Percy Sledge even more❤
What an invaluable analysis you are able to provide with your technical comments. It just made his performance that much more appreciated.
This was my another one of my all time slow dance songs...Another great job Fil...Very enjoyable...
Fil says that he himself cannot sing but he can. But his analysis is fantastic every time. He helps me understand why I love the songs I love. Brilliant performance
I loved this song, Percy Sledge. It was amazing. I was a huge STAX and R & B fan I still have a bunch of these old 45's. I'm an old rock and roll fan. So appreciate what you do Fil.
Paydirt!!! - geezer. Never goes out of style across the pond. Same with Stand by Me. Always in fashion here.
Thank you, Fil. You've done it again. You analysed a song I've been listening to since it was released and now I can appreciate how good the performer truly is. I was sure he was belting out those high notes and shortening his life with every performance. Now i know he was a better singer than I imagined.
‘Sir Fil’, this song was sung at my musician friend’s wedding by a friend of his. He did a knockout job. But of course, only Percy could hit it ‘out of the (baseball) park’! Thanks so much sweetheart for this. 😊❤
One of my very favorite songs from the sixties! Percy Sledge sang it with such passion and depth; and, no one could ever imitate his perfect rendition!!! Thank you, Fil !!!
I could tell from the first phrase that he isn't lip-synching to the record---I remember that record so clearly. I love that he moves around the melody.
Really enjoy your channel, as a musician and singer with relative perfect pitch what makes it interesting to the human ear is listening and if you think of the great orchestras it's virtually impossible for them to be perfectly in Tune. Think of the strings with their vibrato, none universally in perfect pitch. That is what holds our attention.
The original was recorded a couple of miles from my house, I grew up in the same area that Percy did. He was a big hit at my house so my Mom put his music on every night at bedtime. We fell asleep listening to this and Cover Me. Brings back good memories. Austin Brown and Home Free do an amazing cover of this.
Don’t they get auto tuned, and Melodyne “corrected,” despite not needing any interference from music ‘engineers’ and software?
I’ve always loved this song. What a great artist. I think you hit the nail on the head there Fil. He’s a natural and his singing is effortless. Thank you for sharing this.
Others try to sing this (Michael Bolton) but can’t carry it. The only version that comes close is Josh Ledet. You either got it or you don’t…Percy slays it!
I've always been a big fan of Mr. Sledge. His story is wonderful, in his youth, he picked cotton, nice to see you featuring this great singer.
As a voice ' student', I would loooove you to give us a bit more about 'mixed voice' skills and examples of it working (and not working) in famous singers.
Thank you
Percy was from Alabama, neighboring state to my state Mississippi. We’ve had multiple artist from Mississippi and Alabama.
FIL, please do a video on pre-1972ish live performances, and the fact that NONE of the musicians or singers have monitors or any way to hear themselves. The fact that Percy was as accurate as he was is astounding ! The Beatles are an excellent example as they frequently had 100 watt amps completely wash out from the crowds' screams. Mal Evans (Beatles roadie+) said he couldn't hear them at all in Candlestick Park, and he was behind George's amp, right next to Ringo drumming. Those older performers really trained to get it right. They played many more live sets than most modern bands could imagine. It was their bread and butter.
Thank you for this one, Fil! What a great song and wonderful analysis. He had so many great hits, but my favorites were this one, "Cover Me," "It Tears Me Up," "Take Time to Know Her," and "Sudden Stop." I've been listening to Percy since the '60s and still listen now - mainly because his songs are untouched and pure! Thanks again!
My school music teacher was classically trained opera singer, she could fill the theatre at school over a few 100 kids "singing" It was just so easy for her, but she spent years training.
He performed this song at Ritzy's nightclub in Nottingham. It was re-issued in 1987 so it must have been around that time. Despite everyone being there to dance, I recall us al being stunned by the performance, absolutely amazing.
Stellar voice, such presence & emotion. Interesting lyrics, would be nice if life/love worked like that lol😅Thanks Fil😊🏜⭐️🎙🎼🎵
I love watching you listen to and watch great performances. Your smile show how much you love the sound and appreciate the artists.
percy and U2 both at the hall of fame at the same night pretty great
Great song and performance by Percy Sledge. I enjoyed your analysis as well as the added trivia. 😊🎸🎵
Ah. Memory lane again. Great song and vocals and slow dance tune. Another learning experience for me by way of your analysis. Thank you Fil for the real music.
The man had a gorgeous voice ❤
Years on the road gave the singer a chance to perfect his technique with the mic.
Clearly well sound checked
Wow! Fil, you show us so much detail.
Hi Phil! It's been a long time! I am glad watch your great analysis vídeos! You are always impecable ! ❤❤❤❤❤❤
great analysis thank you . I was 14 and Percy's singing was transformative to me , a jewel of a song .
That's some performance great voice take this every time natural gifted vocalist 👏👌
Deff huge voice.
I love this song so much , my mother loved this song too. What a voice he had, wounderful song.
Great analysis. I always enjoy the ones featuring the great soul artists of the 1960s. The performance was recorded live on The !!!! Beat (TV Program) Vol 6 # Show 26 (1966), hosted by Otis Redding. The backing band was Otis's one, also appearing on The Ready Steady Go September 1966 Otis Redding special and on his album recordings for the Whisky a Go Go dates in April 1966. Both video recordings are available on CZcams and worth a watch.
Brings back so many memories. ❤
The yoga of singing as demonstrated by Percy Sledge!
I just read an article on Dusty Springfield's only number one hit in the UK....you don't have to say you love me. It was recorded in a stairwell because the acoustics were perfect. They say it was the best performance ever.
You employed a different angle in analysis of this vocal performance --- focus on the stagecraft techniques involved in range and dynamics.
Music of my youth! Fabulous performance and a great analysis Fil, thank you.
Awesome analysis Fil! God Bless xoxo
I love this song. It would be interesting for Fil to anyalize Bette Midler singing the same song.
LOVE Percy!! Thank you for the great information!! Very nice!! I could listen to him all night!! :+)
What a TONE
Thanks Fil for another good one
Feel free to analyse my favourite soul singer of all time, he has so many hits to choose from. I especially like his take on "The Dark End of the Street", "Spooky", "Take Time to Know Her" etc etc. Cheers Fil as always great video.
Love this analysis. I always learn something from you.
I’d like you to analyse Christina Aguilera’s live performance of “Beautiful” at CNN Heroes. It’s a breathtaking performance where she really showcased an insane amount of textures from relaxed to raspy and from falsetto to almost operatic.
Fil! I just found this video from 2007 of a father & young son singing The Boxer. (Thankfully they left out the child-inappropriate verse.)
It's beautiful! I know you will love it.
The Boxer in 2 Part Harmony
gutarmanb
Awesome song. 1966. The year I was born. At least something good happened that year... 😄
In this genre: “Ask the Lonely”. By the FourTops. Levi Stubbs voice peels the chrome off a trailer hitch
Especially at the end
Always a treat to get an alert you have new content. Thank you !
Another great video, thank you Fil! Just came from your livestream, my first time watching! The filjam was 👌👌
That microphone is a Shure 635A and was known as "the hammer of the Industry" because they were very robust. You could, and we did, hammer a nail into a board. Small nails, but sure, nails just the same. Great for on location news, sports, etc it became a TV industry standard. Certainly wasn't the best choice for voice recording for a record but plenty of clubs, stages, and TV studios had them because they worked after being dropped, tossed about, or dunked in a beer.
Thanks for adding details , apart from the last one 😂 mic-on-the-Rock !! Cheers Winger ✌
Wow, I always thought he was screaming it! Thanks for explaining that.
Please cover Vera Lynn! Her voice was beyond compare!
Great update as always Fil
