Autotune is like fingernails on a chalkboard for me. I'm instantly repulsed by it.
Same.
Oooh… you’re so cool. I instantly want to have your children.
Thanks Fill for showing us how bad music is with pitch correction and auto tune.
I know. I actually felt nauseated. 🤢
I find it kinda cool that some young people can sing so it sounds like it's heavily auto-tuned, just because they grew up hearing that effect used so much in 21st century music. Yes, I went century.
Sounds like a robot going through puberty🤣
LMAO!
These practices are a sad reflection on the music business of today... I am so glad I grew up in the 60s and 70s when people became stars because of their talent, not a studio practice!
My microwave oven has been nominated for a Grammy.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed for both of you!! 🤞🏻😂
OMG… Too Funny!
haha good one dude thank god we have indie radio today maggie rogers dont forget me waxahatchee lake street dive no auto pitch needed also today mike kiwanuka my hero same
ps katy crutchfield and sunday morning news show hurray for the riff raff are better country singers than the mainstream ones but you only hear on indies same new single neko case on yesterday
same new single the giant syndicate no studio altering needed veteran talent
How do people, going to these live shows, not feel cheated?
I was 10 in '96. I was mocked incessantly and mercilessly because i preferred Beach Boys (admittedly a boy band) over those from the Backstreet. Now, 28 years later, i look back with gratitude because God Only Knows still brings me to tears, and Smile is the very best album (n)ever made.
I was 10 in 1993, and you were supposed to like either Take That or New Kids On The Block, but like you I preferred my dad's 60s music and my mum's favourite female singer songwriters from the 70s alongside classical music. I couldn't get into modern music until I discovered indie music radio shows in the late 90s and heard bands like The Divine Comedy and The Magnetic Fields that make really good music without artifice.
Great music and bad music has been made in every era, but it seems to be getting harder to unearth the good stuff 😢
Fil, Liam is able to sing live and with a natural voice, and it sounds great ! My question is, why use pitch correction in the studio ? Is Liam really unable to recognize that the pitch corrected vocal sounds robotic and unnatural? It is such a shame that modern-day music has been ruined by pitch correction . Thanks for this one ! As always, a great job on this analysis video 💜
TBH I suspect that Liam won't have much say on the production.
The robotic sound is an artistic choice. Like using a guitar pedal.
Sadly the masses have become acclimated to the auto tune genre and most prefer it. Sucks for singers who can really sing. Auto tune sucks the life out of a great singers voice. I think music is headed towards AI and the masses will buy it. Sad
A I is already here.
There a number of different ones out now. There are videos on CZcams
Showing how it's done. Most of the videos are more like adverts for the programme they are using. I think the people are probably being paid to do the videos. Some say they aren't.
Audimer, vocs ai, Ace studio and others I can't remember the names of. Look for them on CZcams.
To be honest they don't sound any worse than most pop music nowdays. Which is not very good to me anyway.
People have gradually lowered their standards. The craft is no longer appreciated that much. The variation and complexity in popular music has objectively decreased over the last 50 years. People can like what they like but this decline is undeniable.
Indeed, it does seem to be trending as you described, sadly, as vocalists using auto-tune (other than for a specific effect) lose the vast majority of the human voice has to convey emotional emphasis by deliberately being flat or sharp for emphasis. This is made more dramatic when auto-tune tech is applied to live performances. I don’t blame the artist as much as the producers, promoters and so-called engineers that encourage the artist to use this tech because “everyone does”, “it’s the sound the audience wants” or “this is the way pros do it these days.” For me it is always going to help a singer improve their ability to “hit”desired pitches naturally without the technology. Yes it is a skill that needs to be developed, but it is a skill the best vocalists have, and plays a significant role in why these singers are great. If all singers are auto-tuned, they will all sound artificial and empty compared to those legends made before (or without using) this pitch correction technology.
This is, of course, just my view, and the mileage of others may vary as they say. Auto-tune simply isn’t my cuppa tea as far as what I want to hear and ruins the pursuit of what vocalists are potentially capable of delivering musically and artistically and leaves me unmoved by the artificial “empty” sound that often doesn’t match the emotive expression of the lyrics or the composition.
Yet your observation seems spot-on nevertheless. @@acedegenerate6959
Even in the 1970's I had an issue with the play for pay top 20 radio stations. But the masses would happily suck it up. The rest of us would listen to our records or the local college stations. Then, more and more album oriented stations popped up. But even then, many fell into the same rut. Money has always ruled the music business. Many a band was killed with the multi record deal. Either they didn't have 4 albums in them ( creatively) or they were constantly touring. Then you got a rehash with live albums or a Best of.
Agreed
Which is why I don't listen to songs by mainstream music industry . . . Stuff
But I do know how to find good music, by looking elsewhere
These untrained ears hear the metallic sound from the git-go In the studio version. The singer instantly reminded me of Justin Bieber. Good for him for singing it without “manipulation” in his live concert (except for the chorus).
Hi Fil,
You are so gracious to try and find the good about Liam’s performance and this song. As you played the first few seconds I could here the robotic mechanical sound. And if he was going to use pitch correction in the chorus why not just start out with and use it through the whole song? Fil, you did a great job with what you had to work with here! I applaud your efforts. Very fair and interesting analysis today. Debbie☮️
He did use it for the whole song from start to end.
1:45 This echoey sound is what caused a heated debate with my nephew. He insisted that it was a natural vocal sound. I said it was an auto tuned effect/artifact.
Is that entire generation (born in the nineties) so accustomed to auto tune that they believe it’s a natural sound?
I find it painful to hear (like listening to Cher’s “Believe”).
I don’t like this genre of music, but it wasn’t as physically painful to my ears when he was singing live.
What depressing vocals. They tell no story, this could be an AI bot singing.
Good God. That’s painful.
Love this side-by-side comparison with same song and singer, but live vs. record.
But I wouldn’t expect a live performance to be exactly like the record, regardless. (?).
Not a song or style I would listen to, even if it were "real".
When I was a young boy growing up in the 60's I never imagined the downturn the music industry would take.
Sad
This is so unfair on so many levels! You have the singers voices being auto tuned or pitched corrected, then you have the people who buy their music being cheated out of hearing the singers natural voice, and you have people who pay good money to go to see and hear that their favorite artist isn't singing live. I personally think that auto tune and pitch correction should be banned, and real singing needs to come back. Excellent analysis, Fil!
A I for making music is already here. There's a number of videos that show what it does on CZcams.
Audimee, vocs ai, Ace studio. Suno, Udio. The technology is only going to get better. And it won't be long before we have A I made music in the pop charts. And most people won't even know the difference. Some of the music I've heard on these videos doesn't sound any worse than most pop music today.
Check it out. I would love to hear your opinion on it.
In this particular case, I can see how the pitch corrected vocals could have been an artistic choice, to give the song that mechanical, dance music sound. I really don't like that kind of of music, and immediately appreciated the "warmer" sound of the live performance. He can definitely sing very well, and I'm glad that he makes the choice to do so live. I suspect that the decision to use pitch correction on the album wasn't his, because if it was, he would have used vocal manipulation live to replicate that sound for this song. ❤️🇨🇦
I have been watching concert videos lately. The other day, I was in the mood to listen to U2 and I pulled up some clips of their Zoo Tv concert from the 90s. Even though did stream some remastered songs later, I found myself going back to watch the concert videos. Not sure if remasters have processing/auto tune or if I just like the colorfulness and "liveness" of the concert.
Yes, Fil, you nailed it when you said "the pitch correction is quite severe." I believe you're being respectful to Liam by mentioning that to be fair, his vocal accuracy has been improving and will continue to do so in time. I think with this increased use of pitch correction and auto tune, the music industry is sending a message that true talent isn't appreciated which is quite disheartening. I shudder to think what's next. Thanks for being true to the music and for what you do, Fil!
Thanks for doing this Fil, all of One Direction are the same age as my son, I had no interest in them at all, then I heard a brilliant song on the radio, googled it and it was Harry Styles Sign Of The Times, I had never heard of him so went on CZcams and found he was from 1D but they had gone on a break, I got into watching all there videos, many of them are live concerts, I could see what Simon Cowell had seen in them as 5 individuals, all of them can sing live, I went to see Harry Styles live at Coventry stadium last year, best concert I have ever been to, Harry has a full band even brass section and performs everything live, for all the people on here who won't listen to new artists can I point out that Harry's idols were Jagger, Bowie, The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, he has performed on stage with Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks, I would appreciate you reacting to One Direction singing Night Changes acoustic live, it really shows 5 brilliant voices harmonising.
My story is very similar. In 2017, I had the television on in the background while I was getting ready for work when I caught a glimpse of the video for Sign Of The Times - a promotional clip as Harry was getting ready to release his first album
First thing I thought was "what a weird video !" with this guy flying around, but then his voice hit me !!!
I have been a fan of his ever since, and yes, I.had to go and watch all the 1D videos as well.
I was a kid during the 70's, but with older siblings who were into the music of the time, so it was always around me and I still love that era the best to this day.
One of my favourite songs of Harry's, and I am probably going to get into trouble here, is Cherry.
I love ehvery single version - the album, the live version, even down to the raw version you can hear which accompanies the footage of his Vogue photo shoot.
Some fans might not agree because of the muse for the song, but I really like it. 🙂
@@TP067 70s was my era and I still love the music, so glad to here from a like minded person on Fil's channel, I also really like Cherry, but my favourite song is still Two Ghosts from his 1st album, I think it is a shame a shame that this video has bought out so many moaners, some people will never give new music a try, they prefer to be stuck in the 70s ☹
not big fan of harry but did like sign and sledgehammer coversc
@@W0rdsandMus1c Yes, Two Ghosts is another favourite. 😊
I kinda like Music For A Sushi Restaurant too for something different. Apparently Harry walked into a Sushi Restaurant and they were playing his music and that gave him the inspiration. That's what I read anyway. 🤷♀️
@@marktait2371Yep. That cover of Sledgehammer is really good. I don't know who the blonde girl is with the band but she seems very talented. Love her backing vocals.
I like your haircut, Fil 😊. Good analysis as usual! When a difference between the two performances.
Another good analysis. I'd have no info on all this without you lol. I don't mind the song or his voice. Thanks Fil😊🤟🏜🎶🎤
From a company perspective, if they all sound the same they can replace them once they age out. I am only the messenger.
They do all sound like peas in a pod. Once the pea gets a bit wrinkly...you might be right.
i only managed to get through about 4 mins of this........... sorry Fil, i just ran out of patience for this robotic false sound, thank for your review
I managed a few more minutes than that, but then I pulled the plug. The Doors "Break On Through" is playing on the radio in the other room. THAT is music!
It gets better.
@@joeflip2993 yes but only when it stops 😂
Hey Fil - great stuff as usual.
I know it's hard to get to all requests ... but would you consider an analysis of the January 6th "Patriots Chorus" version of the Star Spangled Banner? We all likely heard the original version - it sounded JUST as you would have expected a choir of (alleged) insurgents to sound - spirited but lacking in musical quality.
The version now repeatedly played at rallies and many other functions sounds as though it was performed by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
Count me as skeptical that such musical quality could have originated amongst a group of inmates in a prison yard.
Thanks either way you decide to proceed.
yuck, i know i'm not the target demographic for this, but, i cannot bear to listen to it for more than 5 seconds without wanting to destroy my speakers with a large axe, but, still love your work, fil! 😊
I know exactly what you mean 😂
Good on Liam for performing live with his own voice. I fully support artists having the courage to perform live without any aids although I might be unhappy if Neil Young sang Transformer Man live without electronic alteration.
Great update as always Fil
Oh oh! Just had a flashback to the Bieber. Bad trip man!
Thanks Fil. I appreciate your empirical approach to this stuff.
Thank You Fil. I like the guy's voice live, not pitch corrected. He's brave.
Thanks Fil
I think music like this has a place and time. Even in the 70s and 80s, there was dance music and club music that you wouldn’t call great, but it was fun to move to. There was “AM” radio and the music they played was not something you would listen to when you really wanted to listen to music. You would never go to one of those performer’s concerts. It wasn’t music that moved you emotionally or that you still listen to today. I think this song and artist would fall into that “AM” radio category.
I heard it called it 'Studio gymnastics' in the eighty's, producing what could Not be replicated Live.
I must agree again…
As a music fan, I despair. Generations have now been brought up with the human voice no longer coming out as human. The human voice stripped of humanity. There's a difference between using reverb, tracking for enhancement etc. The dehumanised bot style vocal is ubiquitous in music. The tail now wags the dog. It is all horrible, soulless, bland, expressionless and samey to my ears even when they do part 'live' vocals. One reason why we bombed at Eurovision last year..
Obrigada! ☺️
Please do Moody Blues Fil . My absolute best, never tire of hearing Justin sing he’s fantastic 😊
Hi Fil, I wonder if you could make one video of "Common one" by Van Morrison live at hollywood bowl. And another one that would be very interesting is how Van's voice had changed during the years and a comparison of the young vs old voice could be neat. Thanks.
It is all confusing and weird. No wonder people are getting confused.😢
I'm not sure about this approach because live vocal correction can still be there but "weak" meaning because you can spot obvious mistakes doesn't mean there is no correction there, maybe the parts he got right were corrected because they were off by just a bit and not too fast so the pitch correction was able to fix it.
The problem with these pop songs nowadays is they have so many lines which move between too many notes so fast that even live pitch correction cannot help them with it.
Sounds not much different to Kraftwerk's "We are the robots". But the German meastros wanted it to sound mechanical.
I ❤ kraftwerk
Life by Karl Bartos is a belter.
I came to this video right after a Floor Jansen video and that contrast has me a bit less worried about the death of great singers do to autotune. The flattening of vocal color and expression autotune imposes may work for even the bulk of music produced, but cannot be substituted for truly great vocals. In the future AI substitution may over take that but for now I'm not so sure.
Not in the future it's here now.Look on CZcams for A I made music. There's a lot of different one's available now.
"You're never going to be able to sing more accurately than a computer" -- nailed it!
I guess they weren't going for what we would call robotic in the studio...just the new normal, unfortunately. I wonder what his fans thought of this live vocal, since they were used to the robotic recorded version.
Yes, it is confusing!
The fans are used to hearing Liam sing live, why do you assume that people only listen to recordings?
@@W0rdsandMus1c,
Because live shows come around once a year, or less. Of course people are going to listen to the recordings.
I wouldn’t choose this one, though!
Another good one Fil
Thank you
Fil, I am BEGGING you to do a video on Kent Nishimura’s fingerstyle cover of The Man in the Mirror. Those of us with no musical training need your explanation of HOW IN THE HELL this guy does it. Also, if you do look at it, would my guess that this style has some relationship to or derivation from the “Carter Scratch?”😊
Deserves credit for live performance mostly w/o P C --except backing vocals. It's a departure altering his studio techno sound and revealing his variable accuracy.
Another good analysis!
Oy.... I'm going to go listen to one of my older Bonnie Raitt or Billie Holiday CDs.
yeh same indie radio.fades out had to go old school depeche walking in my shoes and best of men at work i just pulled bonnie luck of the draw for xmas but couldnt meet up.need to revisit few weeks ago found her first vinly think uis 75 like a 70s la session all star band backing
Fortunately we have great choices. Just this morning I was listening to the Allman Brothers. It was a very good morning
@@DianeAvila-bv4fcyeh good to revisit yesterday was in record store several reissuesvof various live shows in new arrivals section but of course quite expensive
The pitch correction causes a form of clipor click on the vocal track which as you said goes with the tune in terms of style
On a personal level, I would choose to sit naked on a fire ant hill, before I paid money to listen to this crap. I'm a big Fil fan, and have been for several years now. With that said, it was hard to sit through the entire video. Can you imagine listening to this for 2 hours. I've never been to a show where you're begging the band to please don't come out for an encore.... Yes, I'm just being an old codger. I'm sure this guy has millions of fans worldwide, but it's not my cup of tea.
Mechanical even for AI...
Great stuff Fil!
How about Tom Ball, Sound of Silence, on AGT.
He’s a fellow Brit.
I'll tell you what's equally confusing, the quite mellow tone of the song and performer in the live show combined with the highly energetic choreography of the dancers doing what looks like a cheer routine. Payne is giving what feels like a low-key performance, while the dancers give off energy that that feels out of step and maybe should go with some other song and singer. The music video that goes with the studio performance is more in line with the song's meaning and mellow tone (it's a dramatically acted/sung story of a man being left by a woman and looking sad, no dancing just anguished looks and angry gesturing in arguments).
This whole situation is as if there are two competing visions for this song, which are switching places between studio and live performances. One, the mellow song and singer, singing with a live tone which makes the song sound much less like a dance track. Two, the heavily pitch-corrected version of the song, which goes with the cheer-routine dancers and the dance track. It's like, angsty ballad material and delivery glued to a dance track.
This guy started out singing Fly Me To the Moon and then was hoovered up into One Direction (upbeat dance track central)? Maybe I'm projecting, but perhaps that explains the confused elements of this performance, including the choice to sing without pitch correction live. I kind of want to see the alternate universe where he went on singing Sinatra and the like.
Hey Phil could you do an analysis of Lacuna Coil live Apocalypse or Swamped. Just curious.
I do hope they released the studio version with auto tune as a stylistic gimmick, and that his future songs feature his natural voice. Seems a waste to have a decent raw ingredient and then not use it.
@wingsofpegasus I would be really interested to watch a vocal/performance analysis of Rosetta Tharp, who influenced The Beatles, Elvis and others.
Have you ever done an analysis video on Joan Armatrading?
It has seemed to me that "MODERN MUSIC' refers to composers like Esa-Pekka Salonen, Magnus Lindberg,, & Kaija Saariaho
Thanks, Fil!
While rooted in the inadequacies of those who may even have managed success, musically, in a bygone era, *whining* - _never intended as a permanent replacement for true singing_ - has now, tragically, found itself the default setting for those who despite coming up short in the talent department are not discouraged _as they most certainly ought to be_ from taking custody of the microphone and stepping in front of an audience to ''perform"
These songs are for folks whose only use for music is to seem cool-to hold up their phone to a friend and say “Hey, check out [whoever’s] new song!”, listen for about eight seconds, then get back to shouting about something else. Or maybe so they can go “Hey, it’s [whoever]!” occasionally during the seamless barrage of empty noise in a club or bar. Emotional expression is superfluous and irrelevant.
yeh today local.brewery van halen beasties doors youve heard a zillion times but even thats better than todays radio
Its Liam's artistic interpretation of his own song!!❤❤❤
Fair play to Liam Payne, I was expecting a lot of auto tune. Respect.
He sounds like a Goddmaned Transformer. I prefer Soundwave's voice.
Can you please analyse Demi Lovato's performance of the song Anyone at the Grammys in 2020? Afaik the audio version was not tuned (at least not heavily) so it would be very interesting to see this comparison!
The pitch correction, to me sounds like I have cotton in my ear. When the singer sings quickly, it misses parts of whole notes in my ear. Plus sounds scratchy, which is really annoying. Even if it is used as the music style, it hurts my brain. I am autistic, and a classical musician.. I dont know if that makes any difference. My husband, who is also a musician and plays jazz and punk rock also hears it so strongly that it pains him. He is not autistic.
I wish you would do a breakdown of Billie Holiday. She went in and out of tune, flat, dead tone etc plus she had a very limited range and her voice would break.
Possibly the most heart-wrenching vocals of all time ! Why ??
Hello Phil,
Don't know if you heard of Lara Fabian if not i woild recommend to look at some of her performance "Je Suis Mallade" "Caruso" "Adagio"
She is higly underrated. rejected by asholes Sony for playing on the radio
Nevertheless very high appreciated by almost everone over the world
If she doesn't blow you away with her skills i don't know what wil
Not to mention her multilingual skills she's got
I am curious in what you think of her
To echo another commenter, this song is kind of depressing in a ho-hum kind of way. Don't get me wrong I love the color beige in the right circumstances, but this song sounds beige to me.🥚💤
Fil, have you reviewed Teddy Swims yet?
Hated the mechanical voice and hated singing through his nose. Early quit.
Whew, my untrained ears got the tinny sound of autotune right away on this one. Not my cup of tea. Fil, what do you think of the show "The Masked Singer" where all the cosplay singers sound "good-ish". Has to be massively auto-tuned... Thanks for all your analysis videos. You rock!
Thank God I was a teen in 70's.. I REMEMBER when I was 15 and the day when A Night At The Opera by QUEEN came out .. I was big fan and went to Warehouse records in San Fran right at 9am when they opened... Those 60's thru 80's were great for radio and record stores... Today its all trash, complete garbage....
Can’t even listen to this.
I’d rather hear Fil analyse someone like James Bay, James Morrison, Merle Haggard, Rob Thomas, or Rory Graham, who actually have heart and soul in their vocals.
This is why I listen to our older icons like John Farnham, Jimmy Barnes - Im an Aussie 😂❤ The music was real and true. There are many more and I just wont spend my money on music these days. 😢 No live bands performing either just background music. Its just awful. I agree with earlier comment - auto tune and pitch correction should be banned 🙄
I know you focus on pitch correction, but quantizing is just as prevalent imo. The visible breaks/jars (like all the way to the left @ 3:50) are indicative of quantizing.
Fil, do the new release by Laura Trump. Jimmy Kimmel did a piece on it tonight.
He still sounds better live compared to the studio version
*Don Henley* - *_Inside Job_*
Wouldn't the C3 that was sung as a slightly sharp B2 have been auto-tuned to a B?
Perhaps I don't understand how live auto-tuning actually works.
Autotune can be programmed to only snap to particular notes of a scale. But if the autotune is set chromatically, then it will snap to whichever note the voice is closest to.
@@wingsofpegasus Thanks. It must have to be synced to a tempo track of some sort too then.
Still am not understanding the WHY!? Why do/are the singers allowing pitch correction? Do the producers really have that much pull to do what they want in the studio? Are the singers even raising an eyebrow over the (sometimes) tin can sound of their songs? Sigh...
Fil I love your channel, but it is a shame that it often brings out the worst in people, I don't understand why they have to be so nasty.
100% agree
It’s like one of those songs in an advert for medication where everyone is unhealthy, they’re dancing (as much as their illness allows), but telling us that the medication helps them live with the side effects - even though the side effects can cause death.
This type of “music” drives me from the area where it’s being played. It’s simply void of humanity.
Kids these days haven't heard Big Mama Thornton, Joe Cocker, Bob Dylan, or any number of other HUGE musicians with unique, natural voices. Producers these days would even pitch-correct gorgeous voices - Nat King Cole for example. Name one singer being played on the radio (!) in their own voice ... you can't do it.
The fakeness has taken over.
Could one use pitch correction to the reverse effect? Can you add little flourishes and set the pitch of a couple notes to land a little flat in order to artificially make it feel more "real" and "human?"
I know what you're thinking, dear reader, "Why do this? Why not just use the original human vocal?"
Well, I'm wondering why the Eagles' sound people don't artificially alter that Desperado vocal that Don Henley pretends to sing to, just a little bit, so that it sounds different every night? You'd obviously do this before the tour even started and have a different doctored vocal ready to go for each night. Nobody would be able to know.
Yes but the amount of work and recording required wouldn't be worth it!
I’d like to hear what auto tune does to a horrible out of tune voice like mine
Absolutely grating sound. Nails on a chalk board anyone?
🌞❤️🌞🇨🇦
Wassup Fil love your content it opens my eyes to a lot of singers.I am a huge Morissette fan and they say Filipinos never use auto tune. Can you prove them right on some of her live performances and thank you.

Listen to The Warning.
Sorry, Fil. That was too horrible to listen to. I had to turn it off.
As much as I'd love to jump in and say 'what do you expect?' - in the very few things I've read and heard about this guy, he sounds very insecure. None of this surprises me...awful song, too.
Bring back Tori Holub.
So basically, they're taking someone with a great voice and making him sound like he has a lousy voice so that he sounds like everyone else. Woke music. What a bore.
