Exit 45 Restorations
United States
Registrace 7. 10. 2014
Hi I'm Matt and I started this channel to document the restorations I work on and share them with all of you. I know I've benefited from others sharing their projects so I felt like I should share as well. I take old cars that have been forgotten and rusting away and completely tear them down, restore all the parts and reassemble them. I'm new to this and have completed two cars so far. The name, Exit 45 Restorations, came about because I want people to exit the freeway and explore America's back roads. You'll discover some of the best people and food out there as well amazing views of small-town America.
Come watch as I continue on this journey of trying, failing, learning and improving.

The 88 has a 44. That's why I was happy it wasn't the 84 they guy said it was.
I noticed wheels on those cribs.. can I ask if you still have the engine and trans in the car?
Hello. I don't have the engine or trans in it yet. The cribbing is sitting on my car dollies so it looks like they have wheels but they are separate
Red warning light is high beam
Thanks. That's super helpful.
So lucky to have your dad to spend time with and have great memories together
Thanks. It's been great to spend time together on this project.
Such fun... I have been doing the same work, when I found 6 fried wires on the fire wall harness. Major bummer.... so I ordered are replacement from the Birds nest I hope it is in good shape. The plunger thing is your window washer plunger. don't forget to install your defroster vent discharge nozzles, I had to glue mine on as they tore out of the rivets.
That makes sense for it to be that. It would reach there and it's the only thing in the area that seems to be right. I hate you had some wire issues on yours. So far all the wires have checked out o🤞
Hello Matt. That was quite an adventure putting the dash back together. I knew you could do it because your dad was there to guide you. Could you see in your disassembly video what that plunger switch is for? Maybe use your wire diagram and trace the color wires. Great job you guys! George B
Hey George. Yes Dad keeps me straight. We'll figure out that plunger soon enough. I just can't think of anything that it would go to. We'll get the book oit on this one.
Where did you get a 3 ft screw driver? Cool
I got it at harbor freight. I have used those several times now.
I think the plunger switch goes to the glove box?
Yep, that's what it is.
We will see. I'm just not sure yet. When I install the dashboard and start to hook up everything, then I'll find it
Glove box? What glove box?
The plunger is the washer
The dash turned out really well, great job you two! 👏
I just recently did this on my 65. There are 2 things that i noticed. The locating pins on the new springs are tiny and they dont locate the axle correctly. I used a socket from underneath to center the axle on the tiny pin. The other thing is the shocks. I cant remember if the old ones had washers on the lower mount. I suspect they were stuck to the shocks and got thrown away. I used some washers from sway bar links and drilled them to fit. Worked perfectly
Thanks.for the additional info. Always good to get others experiences
@@Exit45Restorations thanks for posting the tbird content! I wish i watched all of the videos before i did half of the work that i did.
@davidgalietti3398 no problem. I pit it out there in hopes it can help someone. How deep are you into your project?
@@Exit45Restorations funny you should ask. Im spending 4th of july finishing up the last bit that i can do. Welding in the drivers floor pan. The painter said he is ready for it this weekend. Engine and drivetrain are done. Suspension and brakes are done.. electrical is done.. interior is done. Everything is ready to put back in and on the car as soon as its painted. Biggest part of the project was transplanting a donor roof skin
@davidgalietti3398 wow! You tore into yours as much as I did. I'm about in the same place. I'm just starting to put in the electical now and the engine will go together soon. Send me pic when the paint sets done. I would love to see it.
Hi, could you let me know what repair manual were you using in your video that was on the work bench? Thanks for the video and information.Ken
Hello Ken. It's the Thunderbird shop manual and you can get it at thunderbird headquarters or birds nest online. It's a great resource on these complicated cars.
I think speedometer will be just fine, the red is the important color. As far as the odometer, you are completely rebuilding the car, and documenting it on YT, I wouldn't give it too much more thought. Thanks for the video Matt! 👍
Hello Alvin. Thanks. I really like how it all came out. Character has been added to it along with a.good story of Dad sprying all the numbers of.. lol
Pretty neet to see how it works
Hello Matt. That odometer was a bugger. I think when trying to clean those old parts something like Windex needs to be used first. Even soaking in soapy Dawn soap and water probably would loosen up the gunk and not ruin the plastic or numbers. I've also had issues with electronic cleaners that ruined plastic surfaces. The speedo repaint looked like it will be ok. I was going to suggest painting the gauge indicators purple to match the car, but that might have made it too difficult to see them. Lol. George B
Hello George. So I do like the idea of soaking the parts. It's a little late for mine, but it's a good story of my dad blasting all the numbers off, so I'm keeping it as is. I never thought about the purple for the speedo.
You have a new subscriber,bro! 👍🏼
Welcome and good to have you along for the ride.
Crossfire only takes 9-13 psi fuel pressure
Nicely done video Matt, I know it's very hard to keep the videos short and to the point, you did a great job. 👍 I like that you are including your Dad in in the work...he did an awesome job testing the gauges. 😃
Thanks Alvin. My dad is enjoying his day at the shop and he has been a big help.
I am apprehensive about pulling my heater/Evaporator core out... any advice?
I haven't tried to do that with the dash installed so I don't know what that would be like. I would get the manual so you can see all that needs to be done before you start. Then you can make a decision about if you think it's somthing you want to tackle. It will be challenging so good luck on it.
@Exit45Restorations I've read about it several time's, I think I can do it; I just hate the car being apart for to long. Don't want to forget how to reinstall it all. I understand I'll need to recondition my cores as new are not available.
Take lots of photos and video. I never seem to take enough and have to figure it out the rest of the way
Hello Matt. Fun time fishing! Nice gauge testing demo, your dad did a great job. I'm glad you painted those dials. Have you decided what to do about the speedometer? George B
Hey George. Thanks and my Dad is getting better with the camera. I have completed the speedometer and you will see that one next week. But I can tell you it worked out great.
Good video, boy those are slow, they must be bi-metal movements. I would have updated them to better movements, but that is just me. Joe's looking good for an old fella.
They are slow but I'm just glad they all work. Complementing dad is kind of self serving as a twin.. lol
@@Exit45Restorations what are you talking about, I look better than him. lol
Good information
Awesome to see your progress... love getting to see you and Dad
We've been enjoying the build. Lots more to come
Duralast bearing ?? Skf or timken are the indicated for this job
I would agree that those are better earings and at some point I'm sure I will be back into this rear end and I can swap them.out then
It's always nice to get something that complicated back up and running without a ton of work!
Hey Alvin. It really was pretty easy. Just some cleaning needed.
Hello Matt. Your dad did a great job getting that clock to work again. I cleaned mine out many years ago, and it needs it again. I didn't hear you say that you repainted the clock hands. I saw some paint on your work bench, so maybe you did? I have two more of those clocks that I'm going to clean up one from a 65, the other from a 66. George B
Hey George. He did a great job figuring out how it works and what needed to be done to get it going. It would have taken me awhile. I didn't paint them because they didn't look bad.
Looks like you beat it into submission with contact cleaner. Tell Joe that if he would quit shaking he could get it working quicker. My right hand is ok but my left shakes.
We cleaned it many times and we gave it no choice but to work. Even with Mr shaky fingers.. lll
Hey Matt, thanks for the view of the underbelly of the dash, it will come handy down the road! The speedometer roller could be redone with a vinyl decal, half white, half orange? Just a thought.
Morning Alvin. I hope it helps you when you get to this phase. I ended up painting it and it worked good.
Dude! Go in from either side by the wheels!
Thanks for the tip. I have one more to tear dowm and that will come in handy
I'm still in the process of putting my dash back together as I had two on hand and I wanted to install a nice one back in the car. I found a guy in Eugene Or, who recovered my dash and did some very nice stitching on it. I could send you a photo if you want. So now the wiring harness is back on and I have to finish the vacuum line replacement and the break booster install as I had to pull the break booster out to get the steering gear out. What a job from ......Well on a positive note I had the booster rebuilt as well. So beware of those black defrost vent nozzles... I think that they are made out of paper machete and they break like crazy! I had to two part epoxy them on. I have a complete blue dash just like yours I bought as a spare as I wanted the gauge cluster.
Sounds like you're been busy too. I'm almost finished with my dash now. I would love to seesome pics.of your dash to see how it came out. I'm always looking for options down the road.
@@Exit45Restorations Yes sir, busy... so how would I post pictures? can one do it here? or? through an e-mail?
Hello Matt. That is really a lot of work, but when you complete the cleanup and get it painted, she'll look great. That panel below the Thunderbird script comes off. Do you have the interior/body assembly manual? It will help you so much with the restoration. Your speedo drum looks nasty, maybe you could repaint it? Dad's lookin good! And a great helper. George B
Hey George. I do have the manual so that's good. I'm going to need it. So far everything is coming out good on the assembly. Videos to come. It has been great to have my dad out to help once a week. He really enjoys it. Good to hear from you George.
Hey, that old guy looks a lot like me. LOL
He does doesn't he..
All that work to hide it under the chassis. Nice
Yes but I know it looks great under there. Lol
Great Video. The dashboard is probably the most dreaded part of a car to work on....One mistake and you can either cause a major issue or burn the place down.
Lol.. so true. Don't install fear into me on this project.. lol. So far it has come out great. It had been something I've been dreading for sure.
Might as well replace the rubber impeller while you have it out.
I did get that replaced while I had it apart. You're right it just makes good sense to get it while you're in there.
@@Exit45Restorations excellent. I replace the impeller anytime I have the bottom end apart.
Who is that old fart. Like looking in a mirror. LOL
At 8:15 zoomed in on the axle, sure looks like you cut into it getting that race off. If so it will fail at that spot, suggest replacing it.
How was the cost for this, vs just buying a built one? So how much did you have into it after time and labor, parts.? I’m thinking about trying now.
Hey Alex. I don't know what it would cost to buy a rear end completely rebuilt but it probably cost me a couple hundred dollars to do it myself. And I enjoyed the challenge of doing myself. I hope this helps

Nice video. I’ve got to rebuild a buddies 9in and I’ve never dealt with one before so thanks for the video, I know what I’m getting in to. His has a locker so I wonder what else it’s going to involve for the rebuild.
I'm Glad it could help you. I didn’t get into the spider gears on mine so unless you're going to break down the gears you shouldn't have to worry about them. I was just trying to get all the seals and bearings replaced..
I’m running corvette suspension in my 63 as well, you can clean up all the components and put a nice shine on them or have them blasted and painted. Don’t forget to change all the bushings 👍🏼
Hey. It will be interesting to see if we .ount them the same. I would love to see it and maybe get some info on tire size and ride hight. I'm working all that through my head now
Sweet! best of luck working on it, its a fun car to learn on. Im trying to save a 1993 9000 aero, sadly with TCS. its my first project and its been very fun and frustrating to do. But i love every second of it
That's great!! I'm pretty new at this too. Just don't give up on it.
Your videos are all over the place like mine....I love it.
Hey Jim. I've definitely got spread out a bit.. lol
She looks like a completely different boat!
Hey Alvin. It does and it is in much better shape now with the hull repairs
Thanks man, this video helped cause I got a 64 Thunderbird project on my hands in school!!
Hey.. no problem. I'm glad it helped. Good luck on your project.
Hello Matt. I've never painted a boat before, so I guess you did it right. Lol I kind of liked the green color better myself, but like you said, it's not my boat. Hope to see some video of you and Ryan out on the water with it. George B
I think I did it right too. Lol.
Hello Matt. Enjoyed watching you figure out how to do this job. Hope you show a video of you and your son taking out for some fun. George B
Thanks George. I will try to get something to post. He should be picking it up in a few weeks when he gets back from Poland.
Good thinking on recording the shift rod details, most likely saved yourself a lot of time getting it back to where it was! 👍👍👍
Hello Alvin. It was a very interesting project for me. I thought for a little bit that I was going to have to go through the rigging on the shifter.
Your son should be there to help and learn for next service
Hey Steve. I know he would love to but he is deployed to Poland right now and I'm doing this to help him our. He watches all my videos and so he's seeing how it goes. I like the way you think though. I try to have my kids there helping when I'm working on there cars
Ok good luck to him over there.
The struggles are real lol😂
Good job for somebody that doesn't know what he is doing. Although I would have forgot to check the length of the shift rod and had to go through an adjustment later. You might not know what your doing but you think ahead way better than me. Have a good one.
I think I get lucky.. lol
@@Exit45Restorations Luck has a lot to do with it. LOL
Hello Nick. I couldn't find quality pictures of that trunk seal, but i think you have it correct. I did notice that my trunk lid sat lower down without the seal. Maybe 1/8 of an inch below the quarter panel edge. I'm not going to remove the hinges cause i don't want to mess with the alignment. (Chicken) That was quite a feat moving that trunk on and off by yourself. It's looking great . George B
Hey George. Good to hear from you. The trunk has been a challenge for sure. I think I have it now. I'm hoping that over time it will settle in and the trunk will settle down a little lower
