SKippy's Guillow's Piper Super Cub 95 - Part 3
Sorry for the break in videos here, but I hit a brick wall in how to secure the battery and I lost confidence. Took me a while to think of how to solve the problem and I finally came up with an idea. Hopefully you'l find tis useful and we can now get on with building this model.

Apologies for the long gap since part 1, but I've been trying to get some flying in of my other models in me free time as we haven't had much opportunity this year so far. This silver tissue looks good, but is a lot more fiddly to get a nice finish as I'll mention on several occasions in this video. Thanks for your support and please subscribe if you aren't already.

Well it's been longer than normal between videos but we're here at last. Yes, I know the picture in the thumbnail isn't a Super Cub but it's a guide for this build. The new project is another Guillow's model, but this time not a warbird but the Super Piper Cub which has been sitting in a drawer for over 3 years now waiting to see light. I want to make this a military scheme and have found one t...

Well she's finished and ready for the maiden, but not in this video. As with all short nose aircraft I've had to add quite a bit of weight up front but she's better balanced than without. Didn't do any airbrushing this time as the use of black tissue and a different approach to normal for me with the doping process seems to have given a finish that I'm very happy with. IMO You need more thrust. The balance of the aircraft looks OK. I would advise not changing the CG by removing the nose weight and attempting to re-maiden. You need to use a bigger motor and maybe a bigger battery to power it. The extra lift gained with more speed will keep the model from stalling so easily. The extra weight of a bigger motor and battery placed as far forward in the fuselage as possible will allow you to reduce or eliminate the nose weight. Good luck! Your DR-1 is a nice looking build.

  • @funscalemodels9782

      Thank you! A bigger motor may work but I'm reluctant to try and change all of the electronics out too, so am hoping less weight and flying over grass will help next time. There should be enough power according to the spec if i keep the weight within limits. Fingers crossed for then...

    That is a nice project. Cubs are supposed to fly nicely. I still have to maiden mine, too scared to do it. The silver tissue looks interesting, but if it can't be stretched so much it looses a bit of the point. It might shrink if you wet it from the other side. Then you could shrink only the top part so that it has a better airflow.

    • @srknight307

    I have used the same silver tissue. It definitely has a metallic coating. I have found if you put it on wet that it does shrink. The idea is to soak it really well eith wster mister and then Pat dry it on both sides with microfiber towel. The tissue is now limp and can be applied with glue stick or white glue. It will shrink quite nicely

    Thanks for sharing your quest. I recall getting a publication (some years ago) about giant scale models, and that the advantage of them, was not having to fly so fast to achieve adequate lift, (multiple times the scale speed). Air density being mostly constant, .. no matter the size of the plane, flying in this constant air thickness. In other words, .. smaller planes, are much more challenging to get light enough, to really fly well. But when this was published, .. the micro control equipment wasn't around.

    • @spottyjack614
      @spottyjack614 Před 3 měsíci

      @srknight307 Hey I think I know what U mean regarding throttle control.. I also watched a few 1st flights of this plane Before I did my first flight..I also used the exact battery u had in ur plane as well. I made sure it wasn't tail heavy first off. Adjusted my throw rates because I learned from watching the other modelers 1st flights that the this bird was squirrely and the CG had to be spot on!! That was key for my 109 anyways....I also took it to a large grass field with tall grass. I had to fly it with using rudder and ailerons at the the same time. I got it way up high in the air. Or as I say 3 to 4 mistakes high in the air and got my throw rates and trim dialed in. I had to keep the speed up or it would just stall and fall outta the sky..so I was flying it like it was outta control and it felt I could loose control at any minute and krash!!!.. I learned that keeping a little extra up elevator going at all times helped me elemenate 1 thing I didn't have to worry about while trying to keep it airborne. After 1 battery worth of flight time I was ready to call it a day.. I had two hard spills and if it wasn't for the tall grass my BF-109 would of been dead. .I flew it 1 more time after that and it's been a display model since then..that was 4 yrs ago. So I am make another one as I mentioned doing your way and I think I know now what I can possibly try out and make some improvements and see how it comes out 👍👍..

      Thank you. Yes, I made a hatch on the front right hand side for it to slide into 👍🏻

    All looking very nice and tight! I am sure it will have plenty of lift with all that wing surface but the fuselage looks very short. It might be a handful to fly. Great job with the tissue covering! Looking forward to seeing the painted finish! And congratulations on the 1000 subscribers! Well deserved!

    I love your videos but these last few are unwatchable for me at least because of all your sniffling. Please do something about it.

      😂I’m sorry about my cold, but I do understand it can be annoying. It was either carry on or have a long pause or no sound. Hopefully as the weather improves it’ll be gone 🤞👍🏻

    What scale is this plane, roughly? Nice job on the roundels and all!

      @srknight307 Před 3 měsíci

      Thank you 😊 Scale is roughly 1:16 by my reckoning. 12m real span vs 30” model.
