  • After reaching an amazing 500 subscribers this week I decided to do another build which will hopefully continue to hold your interest and gain more subscribers; thank you to you all!
    So this build is going to be a WW1 biplane, for a change, and be one of the most famous, the Royal Aircraft Factory S.E.5A. As with previous builds, this will be a Guillow's kit conversion and will have ailerons for added maneuverability, probably.

    So years ago, in 2002, I had enlarged the Air-Trails SE5 plans for their 18" ws rubber freeflight to a 27" electric RC model. It was 3 channel RET and flew great on a Kokam 850 2S lipoly with a geared sp280 class ferrite can-motor, Hitec S-55 servos and a Feather .rx AUW when loaded with the battery was about 8.7 oz.
    About RC converting these WWI biplane FF rubber powered model kits: They generally have sufficient dihedral to make needing ailerons a moot point, when converting to RC. My SE5 was quite spritely in roll response because I kept the wing's construction light, reducing the roll inertia. So these Guillows kits are far more complex and stringer heavy compared to the Air Trails plans, and Guillows kits, including their newer laser cut models usually have really heavy balsa and a construction that is far too strong for making it a nice, responsive and gentle flying model. Adding ailerons without enlarging this is probably going to make the roll response even more sluggish, than stock. If you can get them in the UK Penn Valley Models had a series of "Walnut Scale" WWI kits similar in construction to the Air trails SE5. BTW the full size SE5a had considerable dihedral, pull up a 3 view of the SE5a and take a look, it's already present.
    Just my own experience..

    K.I.S.S. ! Single ailerons will keep weight down.😊

    Suggested servos Ares AZSH1257-R & L. Be prepared to break a lot of stringers. Hope you have a balsa stripper 😊 Good luck.

    Since I have one of those other Guillow's SE5a build videos up on YT I'm very interested to see how well the laser cut kit builds VS the old die-crushed kit I had to deal with. If I had to build another I would save weight and build it as light as humanly possible. Looking forward to your build.

      Yes, it’s yours that’s inspired me to give it a go! Very nice looking and flyer, how’d you secure the rigging wires? They look great 😎

    • @Jon.Carlsen
      @Jon.Carlsen Před rokem +1

      @@srknight307 Thank you. The rigging is braided fishing line threaded through holes in the balsa. Once I had the line tight a drop of CA glue in the holes secured it in place. The rigging adds significant strength and stiffness to the wings. I'm not a videographer so the step by step build details are all in the online build log.

    Fantastic new project. At some point I want to get into WWI era models also. I am starting a biplane myself and was thinking of doing just two top ailerons. I am curious how you would control 4 servos on one channel (presumably more Y-cables).
    Looking forward to the progress on this one!

      Thanks, I’m thinking 2 servos, y harness and push rod between each pair of ailerons like I have on my 60” Sopwith Pup 🤞👍🏻

      It may be, but the real one had them and if it’s too much for the model I can fix 2 👍🏻

    Looking forward to this build! Could you tell me what kit you used to build the Fokker D-8 hanging on your wall? Is that the discontinued Guillow's kit? Thanks!

    • @srknight307
      @srknight307  Před rokem +1

      Hi and thanks. It’s not a Guillows no, but the Veron 46” kit. This one was a kit produced by the Vintage Model Company for a short period. I did a build blog for it on the Modelflying.co.uk forum. There’s also a video in my channel of it flying if you go back a couple of years 👍 SKippy's Fokker DVIII Maiden Flight
