  • This is the long awaited BF109 build I promised last year. If you like this or any of my other videos, please like and subscribe, my wife will be even more patient with me if I have more subscribers ;-).
    This is a longer video than normal as I have done much more video rather than just photos and written description so hopefully it will suit more people and as requested by some of the early subscribers.
    For ease of reference, the chapters are as follows:
    0:13 Introduction
    3:56 Preparing the pieces
    6:07 Making the tail pieces
    9:17 Building the wing
    15:44 Building the fuselage
    20:49 Fitting the tail pieces
    22:39 Fitting the rear servos and pushrods
    25:51 Completing the fuselage
    27:46 Making the motor mount
    32:09 Covering the model
    38:36 Fitting the ailerons
    39:22 Finishing touches
    41:18 Painting and decals
    The kit was a nice one to make, very similar method to the previous Guillow's models and you'll note I've used the same techniques that worked. You could probably use this video to build almost any of the Guillow's models as they are all done in the same style.
    Hopefully get to maiden next week!

    Hello....I just wanted to comment on ur bf-10[ build.. I have also built this model and must say I really really enjoyed watching your build..my hat goes offbti U!!!! and I LEARNED quite a few new a good tips from watching ur build👍👍👍👍. I did my front motor/esc/ battery hatch somewhat similar to yours..I like your version much much more then mine..I must of watched 5-6 different people's build of this plane and came up with my own version..I also liked the way U built your motor mount.. I am gonna build this plane again and use ur version from start to finish..the lego idea is a very slick set up.. very nice....anyway. thanks for posting this. Viddd.I give 100 thumbs up👍.. cherrs...Ray from Colorado. 😅

      Morning Ray and thanks for the kind feedback, glad you found the video useful! 😎 I hope your build goes well and you have better success with flight than I did in the end; I’ve learned more about throttle control since then 😊 good luck and thanks for your support 👍🏻

    • @spottyjack614
      @spottyjack614 Před 3 měsíci +1

      @srknight307 Hey I think I know what U mean regarding throttle control.. I also watched a few 1st flights of this plane Before I did my first flight..I also used the exact battery u had in ur plane as well. I made sure it wasn't tail heavy first off. Adjusted my throw rates because I learned from watching the other modelers 1st flights that the this bird was squirrely and the CG had to be spot on!! That was key for my 109 anyways....I also took it to a large grass field with tall grass. I had to fly it with using rudder and ailerons at the the same time. I got it way up high in the air. Or as I say 3 to 4 mistakes high in the air and got my throw rates and trim dialed in. I had to keep the speed up or it would just stall and fall outta the sky..so I was flying it like it was outta control and it felt I could loose control at any minute and krash!!!.. I learned that keeping a little extra up elevator going at all times helped me elemenate 1 thing I didn't have to worry about while trying to keep it airborne. After 1 battery worth of flight time I was ready to call it a day.. I had two hard spills and if it wasn't for the tall grass my BF-109 would of been dead. .I flew it 1 more time after that and it's been a display model since then..that was 4 yrs ago. So I am make another one as I mentioned doing your way and I think I know now what I can possibly try out and make some improvements and see how it comes out 👍👍..

      @@srknight307 sir. This is outstanding job on this balsa wood plane. Although You should consider using smaller servo off 1.7g in the future and perhaps not to cross the pushrods for elevator and rudder as this may cause some interfere of these two controls which you would not like to have in the air. If one rod will be blocking another or dragging it you may have some instability mid air due to micro delfcetcions on the steering surfaces for those two. Other then this - great work !

    • @srknight307
      @srknight307  Před rokem +2

      @@theartofflying3108 thankyou and fair comment on servo size and crossing of pushrods. The servos come as standard with the power pack I buy. When I looked at buying all separately it was more expensive just to save a couple of grams. The others have flown well with plenty of power left so hopefully the weight penalty is neutralised.

    My last balsa kit was the 109. Sat for years uncovered so after covering did some backyard glide test and off to a public field near my base airport. Wound her up, a toss into a light headwind and off she went. I heard a female scream and as I turned my head I saw a hyper Beagle at full stride. As the 109 landed the Beagle ran right across her ripping the plane up. The poor girl was so distraught I didn't even think of the plane. Brief but it was a great 50 yard flight. Fly em, lose em.

    Just a thought, when the cuts don't stand out very well on the die cut balsa, you can shine a light at shallow angle and the cuts should be clearly visible, rather like looking for Roman house foundations in the light of dawn, you can see things that are otherwise invisible. You can even use a laser pointer...

    It has been literally decades since I built a wooden airplane. I was shocked to find that you can't use "Dope" paint any longer at least not in Calif. My question is, "What type of paint do you use?" Also, "What is the yellow material you are using as masking? Is it simply paper or does it have a tacky quality?" Kinda looks like Post-It's!

    • @srknight307
      @srknight307  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks Pete. The paint is by Lifecolor and is water soluble acrylic. I apply it to the tissue after it's coated with Eze Dope, a specially formulated water soluble dope for shrinking, strengthening and wind-proofing model tissue paper. The yellow paper used are Post-It Notes, along with the Humbrol Masking Tape. Just before applying either to the model I gentle press them on my trousers to reduce the tackiness just in case. Hope that helps!

    • @srknight307
      @srknight307  Před 2 měsíci

      Hi, I used a 2 blade initially because that is what came with the motor etc and I didn't fancy trying to cut the spinner. I did fit a 3 blade to her later as with all of my other models now. Rather than cut the slots into the spinner, I just fitted it on top. My Maiden Flight part 2 video shows it with the 3 blades and she does look much better.

    Very nice work converting a “die-crunch” into a gem of a model. Neat wishes on your maiden. Did you notice any issues with your other conversions using the stock airfoil? I converted their P-40 and it was very pitch sensitive. I did a conversion (short vid on my channel) that helped reduce this issue

    • @srknight307
      @srknight307  Před 2 lety +3

      Thank you! I've watched a few of your videos in the past so appreciate your building skills and knowledge. I haven't noticed any negative effects from using the stock airfoil but do note the SBD3 is more stable as it has a proper airfoil unlike the Spitfire and Zero. Still not flown the Me109 as the weather here has been horrendous!

    • @pufango4059
      @pufango4059 Před 2 lety

      The airfoil shape is totally irrelevant because it’s not very accurate is it ? Just an imitation of Clark Y . If your aircraft was pitch sensitive it’s probably due to the CG being wrong or too much elevator movement. Just basic aerodynamics it’s not rocket science is it ?
