SKippy's Guillow's S.E.5A RC Conversion - Time to say goodbye?

- Well there's been a bit of a break in my output since December, apologies.
The main reason is that resolving my S.E.5a so that she will fly has been more challenging than I expected and sadly we have currently lost the use of our flying site. It's not the end just yet and we're in positive negotiations with the landowner to remain, so all may not be lost and I need to get on with it!
I love building models as much as flying them and I really appreciate the support I have had throughout 2023, which has seen my subscribers more than triple; we are now at 900! Awesome! - Zábava
Can't wait to see the dr1 build! Good luck!🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Thanks, fingers crossed!
thumbs up!!!
Thanks!!
Good luck with your new build. Cheers from 🇺🇲
Thanks 👍
Looking forward to seeing how this goes 👍
Sorry to hear you have had to drop the SE5. I was hoping to see how you got on as I have a 24" Comet SE5 kit and the radio from a UMX Radian. Not sure if it will work! I hope you have better luck with the Dr1 but it's nose is very short as well. It would look great in the air though.
You and me both! Thanks
Thank you yes, will try and getting everything further forward. Battery access will be the biggest challenge I think.
I am in final stages of that same DR.1, as a rubber powered/Static model. They're so expensive that I was too afraid to make it RC haha. I can't even keep my Flitetest DR.1s in one piece for long.
I look forward to watching your build!
Thank you! Hopefully I'll have greater success this time.
I'm sorry you're retiring the SE5A. You gave it a good shot. You are probably right about the added weight and complexity of all the electronics. In my opinion when converting a stable free-flight airplane design to RC all you need are three channels; rudder, elevator, and throttle. In many cases you can even eliminate the elevator and use the throttle to climb and descend. I tend to think of them as free flight models with a rudder so it won't fly away. I'm looking forward to watching the DR1 build and flight.
Thank you! The DR1 is going to be 4 channel all being well and I've now begun the journey :-)
The zero and spitfire are excellent models.
I do like them, nice and steady fliers, though the Spitfire has been a challenge to hand launch.
Like her innards, she’s gone for recycling ♻️ 😊
Just seen the videos on SE5a and DR1 just a thought on the SE5a being tail heavy. You might find that the balsa my be a harder grade than most and hence heavier. I built a Typhoon and replaced the wood for the tail structures with soft or medium soft which helped a bit.
That’s a good point thank you. I’ve had to cut some parts myself for the DR1 and as you suggest, it is softer so hopefully will help 😊🤞
I guess at some point we do need to let them go. A pity, the SE5 was really very nice. What are you going to do with its remains?
In any case, looking forward to the Dr1 build!
Let's go! :-)
