Walkersville Southern Railroad Jeddo Coal Co. 85 Freight
The Walkersville Southern Railroad in Maryland hosted travelling steam locomotive Jeddo Coal Co. 85 for a few weekends in May 2024. By chance, I was a few hours away and managed to free up some time to ride a photo freight held the evening of May 26. Two of the railroad's 44 tonners powered the passenger train while 85 pulled a short freight.

Sherkston Quarry Locomotives

Sherkston quarry was a limestone quarry. The quarry ceased operation around 1917 and filled with water. The railway that serviced the quarry remained relatively intact, including two steam locomotives that have now been under water for over 100 years. The area around the quarry became a campground. Toronto Ferry Co. Trillium

Trillium is a rare side wheel paddle boat built in 1910. Trillium is the only steam powered vessel in the fleet and only runs when large crowds warrant an extra ferry. We happened to be in Toronto on Canada Day 2023 and got a chance to ride the boat to Centre Island.

We were on a busy road trip that took us right by the Essex Steam Train. We only had time to see part of one trip. The Reading & Northern returned 4-8-4 2102 to service after a 30 year slumber. To celebrate their achievement, 2102 pulled 50 hopper cars from Reading to Jim Thorpe. The locomotive put on quite a show! In fact, the runby at the route 93 overpass/tunnel was the loudest I have ever heard any steam locomotive work. The Roy O. Disney locomotive has since been shipped out for overhaul, and a new whistle was installed on the Walter E. Disney locomotive.
I am glad I got to see the Roy O. Disney last year since it's now gonna be in Strasburg for a few years. By chance, do you know what kind of new whistle the Walter E. Disney relieved? I ask because prior it had the same kind of whistle as 2 & 3 (before refurb) and number 4 was the only one with a different whistle. Please contact me if I am wrong. Also what kind of whistles does each locomotive have?
@@ZachTheRailfannerYT #1 now has a Baldwin 3 chime. The old Buckeye is now on #2 Lilly Belle. Until 2014 only Roy had a different whistle. Lilly Belle is the last one with the Buckeye, while #3 Roger E. Broggie now has a Lonergan 3 chime. EDIT: Walter now has a Crosby 3 chime

@@ZachTheRailfannerYT American 3-chime from the 1970s (original whistle). Before the current swap, it previously had another similar American 3-chime, but from a now-scrapped second riverboat. That whistle was modified to give it a raspy tone; fast forward to 2015, the modification was undone so that the whistle sounds the way it does normally. The old whistle eventually got so worn that they temporally took a Crosby/Lonergan 3-chime (possibly Roger's whistle) until the 1970's American whistle was reinstalled. I am certain that the current whistle it had before being shipped out will be the whistle it comes back with.
What a fun job that must be! Driving the zoo train and waving to everyone as the miniature train passes by.

Great to see this I used to work on the Waverley which has a very similar engine room but a triple rarher than double expansion. I’m guessing by the fact there are two telegraphs that Trillium has independent control of each paddle wheel? (Something Waverley does not have.)
My guess is that 17 was not able to run this year, heard it may be due to excessive drive rod noise

Definitely not worth it. The train ride has no views, all trees as a view. Nothing is themed like cartoon, just the front. Nj transit is a better ride. No Ac. Very old interior. Would not recommend to anybody.

Fun fact: 190, as well as sister engine 192 at Dollywood, are both former US army steam locomotives. They were built in 1942 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works specifically for the US army, and are class s-118 steam locomotives. They are also the same class of locomotive as the Queensland Railways AC16 locomotives.
