  • The Mount Washington Cog Railway started operations in 1868 and is one of the most unusual railways in the country still to this day. This was my third visit to the mountain. On my previous visits the railroad was all steam power. For this visit, only one locomotive was running and I was able to record one trip on the mountain. This was an afternoon train for a steampunk themed event. My plan was to drive the auto road and hike down the mountain to one of the scenic highlights of the line to catch the steam trip. The sky was partly cloudy with plenty of blue sky at our campground. By the time we reached the top of the auto road, visibility was under 100 feet! I quickly determined that hiking down was dangerous and not likely to produce any scenic pictures. I hiked down a few hundred feet which was still quite a workout to catch the steam train on it's ascent. I did the same for the train's return down the mountain. I also used a gopro to increase the amount of shots that I could get as well as get a shot that would definitely not normally be possible
