How Good is a Hidden Katana (Shikomizue)?
During Japan's Meiji period the wearing of swords was banned, so of course people did it in secret, carrying blades hidden inside inconspicuous walking sticks or canes. The concealment comes at a price, making it a worse design in an open duel compared to a traditional katana. But does it make up for its drawbacks through its unexpected effectiveness for self-defense in a surprise attack on the street?
Let's take a closer look at its pros & cons and how it works, as well as what distinguishes a Shikomizue from a Shirasaya mount.
The sword I'm showing in this video:

Does this "Dirty Trick" Actually Work in a Sword Fight?
zhlédnutí 54KPřed 16 hodinami
Is it even really a dirty trick, or was it just part of a "whatever it takes" mentality back in history? If you had to defend your life on medieval streets or a battlefield, would it really matter whether throwing your secondary short sword or dagger in the opponent's face is "dishonorable", as long as you win? And would it even be effective? Let's take a look at an example from Japanese Kenjut...
This Destructive Shield Test Almost Went Wrong...
zhlédnutí 93KPřed dnem
I got an undecorated version of the Ottoman Kalkan reproduction from Salahs Archery to do destructive testing on, and it didn't go quite the way I expected. The shield took a lot of damage but did its job well, especially considering how light it is. I started with hits from blunt swords and a bit of sparring, then shot it with a modern crossbow (the Cold Steel Cheap Shot) and a medieval crossb...

I know I’m quite late the conversation. The wrap-and-weld method should work quite well to make a double bit axe by my understanding. I would not call myself a blacksmith. I enjoy studying it and have played with the craft some. The wrap-and-weld method relieves the smith from having to punch and drift the eye of the axe (if it has one) and he could simply weld the end of two plates of milder steel together with high quality bits in between and the eye is made, he would only need to shape it. I could easily see this being an impetus to make a double bit axe of various types as it would not add much more work; one extra weld (a fairly quick operation in my limited experience), and grinding one more edge. A skilled smith would leave as little grinding to be done as possible off the anvil anyway making this a simple, fast, and fairly cheap way to add versatility to a weapon and increase it’s sale value, disproportionally to the time investment to make it. Conversely, adding a spike or another complex shape to the poll is a differently and more complex task requiring more skill and planning. It would add a completely different use to the weapon, increasing its sale value. I have my doubts that it would increase sale value proportionally to the increase work investment, as compared to the simple double bit. Talking about more complex double bits these points start to fall apart and I don’t know what style of double bits are most common throughout history. Great vid Skall!

It already happened. Few dozen Western merchant sailers killed thousands of Japanese samurai. I thk it was Nossa Senhora -something around 1600s? Adjustments; it is Nossa Senhora de gracia incident in 1610, 40 Portrueges sailers fighting 3000 samurai and archers. Casualties were near annihilation for Portrueges and several hundreds in Japan samurais. And yes, they did also fought in close combat as they ran out of ammo. 170cm guy fighting 140~150 practically as they were all vegetarians. In the end, they blew themselves up . Japanese were awe struck and kinda near worships westerners since then due to their superior prowess in battle. Personal opinion: Even now they kinda want to be Europian. They always have a Europian or a superior Japanese who dont get acknowledged in west in their comics lol

To defeat a repire is the same way to defeat a spear: let them thrust air and step a side long curve around one of their sides to their bild spot and thrust or cut the nike or hand or knee. Run around and don't bind altogether. Also get a shild or a longer stick or range wepone. Don't thrust context with the repire. Run around their sides and make them mis and get in disarm or kill. Basically do not take the bite/challenge.

It’s not that James doesn’t do good videos anymore. The problem is, that so many people simply outgrew him. Also, there is nostalgia going on, when it comes to older episodes. I for one notice that, but at the same time, I still see great episodes every now and then. Not all of them mind you, but they are there. And it’s not like back then everything was great. There were a lot of corny if not cringey episodes back the. As well. It’s just that with time, you start loving the memory of hating on that episodes, which gives them a kind of second wind. At least, I believe that’s the reality. There is one thing though I agree on: He‘s lacking some fire nowadays. But seriously, at the age he‘s in now, very few people still behave like 20 years ago.
