    Partial armor is quite popular in fantasy art, movies, anime, and video games, be it in the form of barbarian or gladiator equipment or... titillating female warrior outfits. This is a unique case though... an exceptionally realistic portrayal of a medieval suit of plate, but with breasts instead of breastplate. :D
    Of course back in real-life history not everyone could afford a full set, and some protection is better than none. Also there are techniques and guard positions to fight from which minimize certain target areas. Another consideration is mobility and over-heating. So let's over-think it a little... how much could a knight / solder / mercenary gain from ditching the body armor but keeping he helmet, gorget, and limb protection?
    By the way, if you want to see the full necro outfit:

      @@lorddoomer7271 if you mean that he points the end of the shaft fowards, it's simple: he is making use of the full length of the polearm because from that position you can very quickly execute a strike from above. Because of this you can't really get closer without risking a strike. This also has the advantage of making it harder for the opponent do dislocate the polearm to get an advantage (can't shove it aside if it's not there) and it makes it harder for the enemy to correctly judge the length of the polearm thus potentially effectively increasing your range even more. If you hold a stick in your hand and rest it on your shoulder, theoretically you have just eliminated your range advantage, but in practice if anyone comes into striking distance of your stick, all you have to is strike with the stick and you have your range back. As for the second part....I'd say it depends what kind of fetish ninjato you have....

    The part about the leg armor really being the exhausting part makes sense. When we look at older armor styles for infantry, we often see lightly or completely unarmored legs, both to reduce encumbrance and also because it's just mechanically harder to hit the legs. When making the tradeoff between endurance and protection, the legs seem like the most logical place to start.

      Weight on the legs being particularly exhausting is established science, as well, and I've heard figures of weight on the feet being as exhausting as six to ten times as much weight on the back. After all, your feet have to move roughly twice the distance and speed as your torso, and are also constantly changing direction, so a significant amount of the energy you spend getting your feet moving is wasted when you have to reverse their direction to prepare for the next step.

      Regarding asymmetrical armor, a pet peeve of mine is people with one pauldron on the right side. Unless you're using a right-side-forward-only stance like a fencer, which the people in said games and artwork never do, the most important pauldron would be the _left_ one because right-handed opponents will strike that arm more often, especially with two-handed weapons. And even if you had a shield (which, again, they never do), that pauldron would still be more useful for stopping attacks that got over your shield since your shield side would be the one advanced toward the enemy.

      Another artist chiming in. With that simplified manga style face its nearly impossible to determine age of a face unless you see wrinkles. Even with some of the more realistically proportioned manga styles its still not easy. Those of us who were Robotech fans will remember Lisa Hayes. The way she was drawn she could be anywhere from 16 - 35 and you'd only know her age from the context of the story. Its worth remembering manga style is not designed to be hyper realistic, its designed to be expressive.
      Like you said, body proportion is a better indication, but, if they go full chibi on you, that goes out the window too. Basically the best way to know the age of a manga character is to read the manga or watch the anime. For instance, I couldn't give you an age estimate on 90% of the characters in say Naruto or Bleach without knowing the context of the story.
      Now if you were doing the same illustration in a "realistic" western style you could probably get some clues as to age from the details. But, in styles where details are lacking guessing age is perilous indeed.

    I think the best argument for the partial Gladiator armor is that a) they were supposed to get injured (at least a bit) because it increases the spectacle and b) those gladiators with partial armor usually had a large shield. There were heavily armored types but those usually went up against other heavy types, and yes, there are exceptions like the Retiarius that were lightly armored, but their whole deal was being agile and thus possibly defeating the much more heavily armored opponent.
    Therefore, in any scenario where a person has a large-ish shield, it's quite feasible that the shield side would be less heavily protected. For example, I could imagine an early medieval warrior wearing some kind of bracer (for example, byzantine cheiropsella) and (armored or not) glove on their weapon hand, but not on the shield hand. Depending on whether they've seen depictions of Roman soldiers (I mean, early to high imperial Roman - with segmentata armor) they could even get the idea to add some shoulder protection on one side, but not the other. Also, some lamellar armor had arm protection and it's logical to assume the same about scale armor as well.
    In late medieval armor, the opposite is true: as shields weren't necessary for full suits of plate armor, you can see the arm and shoulder plates on the left side of some sets being larger than the right side. This could of course also be a pure aesthetic choice, but if you're more likely to be hit on that side, larger (and possibly thicker) plates or double layers would help with that. Kind of like an integrated shield. If you apply this to an adventurer type, dropping parts of the armor and just going heavy on the area you're likely to take hits on - it's not terribly realistic, but it isn't entirely stupid either.
    I'd also like to say that I am no expert on medieval armor, least of all with anything from the late medieval period, because I mainly focus on early medieval stuff for my hobby. Hence the mention of byzantine armor, which would have been available and known to franks, baiuvars, alamannic, saxon and other european people as well.
    Thanks Skal for another entertaining, funny and at the same time informative video!

      I would also add that unlike a battlefield soldier, Gladiators didn't have to worry that much about large formations/masses of people, or projectile weapons surrounding them.
      In a formation, your mobility to dodge is greatly reduced, so you better be able to tank hits, especially any random arrow coming your way. In the arena, there are usually no archers, few enemies, and you know that a blow is not going to kill most of the time, mostly incapacitate, so your best play is to ditch the vital armor for extra mobility, and protect the limbs which are going to be targeted the most to bring you down.
      After all, if one spear thrust to the heart could end a Gladiator on the spot, that wouldn't be much of a show, now would it?

    • @Loki_Firegod
      @Loki_Firegod Před 3 měsíci +5

      @@vladstefan5216 Which does add up with the idea of an adventurer type person not wearing full armor - while adventuring, you'll hardly ever fight in tight formation against large groups of opponents, and if you do get in such a situation, you'll propably have time to prepare and put more gear on.

      Gladiator battles rarely ever ended in death. Most battles were choreographed to reduce injury in the fighters, and weapons of choice included things like nets. We usually only see gladiator deaths when they were deemed too unprofitable to continue to support, meaning it was the equivalent to a wrestler contract expiring or being fired.
      After all, slaves weren't exactly cheap to buy and train, so actual factual death wasn't the goal, the spectacle of a fight wss the goal. Doesn't mean that Romans didn't participate in bloodsport, the way that the assassin who helped put Nero into power was killed is particularly brutal. I don't even know how they trained a giraffe to do that.

      Gladiators were not just fighters but also entertainers. Some classes were deliberately low armored for the spectacle. Or who else would think sending a guy in loincloth with a single armguard, a net and a trident against a guy with a big shield, helmet and sword (but the helmet having only very tiny eyeholes)
      Different classes being different just makes it more interesting.

Though you mentioned asymmetrical armor as weird, etc. it does appear to have some practicality to it: at the human top shelf anatomy, off hand side is armored for cqd (close quarters defense) & general blindside protection (plus back armor. Usually. Anyways...), while less armor is present for the on hand side for cqo (you guessed it, close-quarters offense) mobility; lower body you might have more equalization of armoring, but the emphasis points are reversed to a degree. So sedentary or nomadic warrior &/or barbarian tribes have a pretty good idea to do all of this bc of warrior intertribal tensions possibly nosediving to the 9th circle of frozen assed hell.

    This gives me a topic idea: is wearing a single gauntlet better on your sword hand or your offhand? Parrying gauntlets existed and were popular for exemple in Ireland, but using a gauntlet on your main hand is also known. Might be an interesting topic

    • @foldionepapyrus3441
      @foldionepapyrus3441 Před 3 měsíci +1

      That would largely depend on your sword of choice IMO - as if its guard is of very limited protection the hand you are exposing most really needs all the help it can get. But if the guard of your sword is really good a gauntlet might even actively get in the way of using the sword. So I'd suggest there is a cross over point where you probably just want two gauntlets, but would be able to justify either hand.

      If theyre using a blade, simply having plate mail means their cuts or stabs likely weren't going to do much anyway. Even if you can predict where they will attack, the added vulnerability is a bigger drawback than just being invincible everywhere. If they're using a blunt weapon designed to beat armor, like a hammer, it doesn't really matter where they hit you. Any powerful strike is going to kill or cripple regardless.

      Although you're always entering an additional layer of skill contest doing that. There are enough cases of people during training and whatnot trying to trick someone just to be too slow/clumsy to actually get something out of it or even get hit.

    Ironlilly is one artist that shows armor can be drawn accurately and look good on female body.
    Anime style face is always look young. It's cultural at this point. In comparison, American art always have either flat face like cartoon or look old otherwise. It's just how ppl draw ppl

    Recently played Kenshi. Quite an amount of cool armor concepts there. Played as martial artist with augmented arms and legs + good helmet, with minimum armor on torso. Guess when most of my defeats started? With character being gutted into stomach with the rest of body mostly unharmed.

    • @ham_the_spam4423
      @ham_the_spam4423 Před 3 měsíci +6

      I like the flavorful descriptions in Kenshi like how Heart Protectors are SUPPOSED to be worn over padding or chainmail but you see Dust Bandits who wear it over their bare chests because shirts are expensive, and I remember reading somewhere ingame that some people prefer wearing wooden sandals instead of armored boots to be more mobile

    • @Reflexion555
      @Reflexion555 Před 20 dny +1

      @@ham_the_spam4423 Another funny armor in Kenshi is the Assassin's Rag, which is described as being very poor armor, but the opening is supposed to make your attacker more predictable.
      It gives dodge bonus for being light, but then both the stats and gameplay disagree with it helping its user: It lowers Melee Defense, making it more difficult to parry, and also poorly protect your chest and stomach which are the two biggest targets in combat (and thus more likely to be hit).

    • @HappyBeezerStudios
      @HappyBeezerStudios Před 3 měsíci

      because that is the arm that is towards your opponent.
      And even if you have more armor, the left side comes first. Your shieldarm is there to take the blows and your swordarm stays mobile to hit from all angles.
