    One thing about Guts' Golden Age armor you didn't get wrong but forgot the context about:
    In the GA, Guts doesn't care that much about getting injured or dying. I mean, no he doesn't want to die outright but he's in a mindset where he just doesn't care and just wants to swing his sword because he hasn't found a genuine reason in life yet. So Guts wouldn't wear armor that restricted him, even if it provided more defense. He's also the leader of the mounted raiders so he's fighting a lot on horseback. That might explain that incomplete armor.
    Also, the "missing" fold on the Black Swordsman Armor and the Berserker Armor might come from Guts' fighting style which is all out attack with a rather animalistic movement, lots of pounces and full body attacks. So a fold would restrict him to no end there.
    For the Berserker Armor (which was not crafted for/by Guts) it might even be an intended choice by design since Berserkers were supposed to just go in (and eventually die) flailing and swinging and the armor took care of the injuries anyway.

      @@davidwilson6577 There is indeed. But while Guts was part of Gambinos mercs, he was still content (despite everything that was going on). That self-destructive, reckless attitude of Guts developed from the trauma of losing his place of belonging and hating himself for how things turned out. Not saying he was suicidal specifically but he sure as hell stopped caring about potentially dying after he lost his "family" back then.
      If you're trying to say he's contradicting himself there however, I fully agree. But a lot of contradictory behavior and statements come from emotional irrationality so I think it fits the situation there very well.

    Hey Shad,
    I know it's a wee bit late but I think you are missing one little bit about the golden age armour.
    In that era, Guts (along with most of the Band) is primarily a mounted combatant first and for a mounted warrior that prioritizes mobility over protection first, the tasset configuration and the length of the breastplate isn't bad. It does look like the historical lighter/earlier Catapract outrider sets found with lesser nobility.

    • @mc_zittrer8793
      @mc_zittrer8793 Před 3 lety +9

      That's actually a pretty good point - though I think Shad's points still stand sustained, all the more so with that new context. After all, mounted cavalry would still want to wear breastplates that don't stop them from bending sideways to swing and cut. I suppose with the longer reach of Guts's sword, he might not need to lean from his mount as much, but I would mostly just chalk that up as an oversight from Miura, having never rode in armor himself for reference. It's nothing to grill him on, as this is his longest running work and he wrote the Golden Era arc in the earliest stages of this manga's lifespan.

    • @Kombereloni
      @Kombereloni Před 3 lety +9

      @@mc_zittrer8793 Eh, looking back on this, I think Shad and I both skipped over another important factor related to the armour design; "cost".
      The armour is made from good quality metals and is robust (IIRC) but at the same time, it seems to be as cheap as possible without sacrificing (or at least sacrificing as little as possible) protection and/or hardness; proper plate until the navel follower by a studded leather/lamellar belt piece followed by a thick leather codpiece - tasset bottom.
      It's a merc soldier's self purchased armour as opposed to a what a proper Noble could shell for a full body cuirass or "standardized" (please ignore the sarcasm here) standing army issue gear.

  • @Charlie.G506
    @Charlie.G506 Před 5 lety +422

    Just a fun fact: When Miura was making the golden age + early arcs, he didn't had any kind of accurate historical source or guides, so he made most of the armour designs based out of movies and other types of fictional media.

      @MW-su2en Před 5 lety +85

      Kentaro Miura took a lot of inspiration for some of the earlier armor styles from the movie Blood of Heroes, Guts' helmet is representative of the influence as well as Guts early on looking very similar to the actor Rutger Hauer, and Casca looking very similar to the Asian female protagonist in Blood of Heroes. Both Griffith's and Femto's helmets/heads are influenced heavily by the film Phantom of the Paradise and the protagonist's alter ego in it.

    Just a small addendum about the berseker armor specifically. It allows him to draw out, or rather, be possessed by, his inner beast, his darkness. When that happens, the helmet changes its shape, and becomes the beasts head. And as such, the eyeslits are its actual eyes. About the mouth opening as well, it can open at will, because it is the beasts head, but when you can see Guts' face underneath it, its because he is regaining control.
    TL:DR the berserker armor is cursed as crap, and it manifests its wielders evil side physically.

    You mentioned the mouth of the Berserk armor being opened, but that seems to be something he can do on command, as his armor is magic in nature, so it's not a very consistent weak point, and could even be a bear-trap style backup weapon if his arms are incapacitated.
    Also, a little surprised you didn't mention his biggest weakness: His armor is constantly spiking him to keep his bones and muscles together, draining his blood.

    Awesome video 👍 referring to your video about superstrength apllied to weapons: the berserker armor would be advantageous for dragon slayer als Guts' usage of the weapon, assuming he can handle the weight, as the armor, which looks insanely heavy (given Guts superhuman strength that would be manageable), would help hin to anchor himself while fighting, so he isn't thrown off balance as much as he'd be otherwhise.

      As cool as it is - no. After quick googling Dragonslayers estimated weight is around 200 kg (99kg-283kg I'd say it's rather on heavier side) so Guts might be as well fighting with his shlong flopping around and it would still require the same amount of suspension of disbelief.

      @@marcun666 You would be absolutely right if Guts used "normal", more ordinary fencing techniques, but since he is, due to his usage of bigass swords, fighting by using momentum of his sword into pendulum swings, I do believe, that by adding weight of massive full plate armor to his already pretty build up body, he can pretty much overweight Dragonslayer by at least a few kg, which could be, by my opinion, sufficient to anchor this pendulum movement...I'm not saying that it wold definetly work fine, I didn't do any exact calculations on that matter, but I think that adding a heavy-ass cursed full plate armor (which due to its supernatural nature possibly can actually weigh more than it seems or even adjust its weight or sth.) is enough to confirm my belief

      The point of Gut's sword is that he has always swung a sword that is too large for him. As a child he used a broad longsword instead of a shortsword or something else more manageable for his size. This forced Gut's to always use a spinning pendulum technique, he's never known any other way to swing.
      Once you have such a technique, while yes other techniques are better suited 1v1, there is no good reason to give up such a power advantage. The progression to larger swords makes complete sense since that is all he knows, big and sweeping swings and using the length of his blade to keep others back. Even his thrusts are designed around the length and weight of the weapon, basically just let the enemy skewer themselves on a nearly unmoveable blade.
      So his swords, completely unrealistic in all historical context, but completely realistic for Gut's specific case where he has always used a sword too large for his body.

    When guts goes beserk with the armour, his whole body is encased within it including the head. The wolf helmet actually doesn't have a slit he can see through. So when he is in the berserk state he is actually blind and can only see people or monsters as soul like entities infront of him. That's why in the manga when he's like that he can hardly tell which is his ally from his enemies. Later in the manga he begins to adapt to it because he uses the berserk state more often.
