  • I had the pleasure of talking to Jason Kingsley of Modern History TV, who has extensive practical experience with horseback riding and armed martial arts, plus extensive knowledge of medieval history. We ended up chatting about what makes mounted combat different from fighting on foot on medieval battlefields, tactics, morale, the strange course of history, and other interesting topics.

    An interesting statistic in the early modern period was that swords were one of the most common weapon. Not because it was the absolute best weapon, but nearly everyone carried one as a side arm. Arquebusiers, pikemen, halberdiers, archers, cavalrymen of various types, etc all tended to carry swords.

      @@chengkuoklee5734 Its brobably like long dagger and knife, are just good secondary arms and you might can use in any situation. maybe it was the modern knife?!

    • @Vlad_Tepes_III
      @Vlad_Tepes_III Před 3 měsíci +2

      Something that many people confuse when discussing the role and purpose of swords is that they consider the terms "secondary weapon" and "backup weapon" to be interchangeable, but they're not.
      If all goes well, if everything goes according to plan, then, you wouldn't need to use your backup weapon. You're supposed to rely on your backup weapon only when things fall apart, when plans go off the rails.
      The usage of swords in battles was very different. Almost everyone who carried a sword, in any battle, anywhere in the world, at any point in human history, would have drawn and used it as a weapon to kill one or more enemy combatants, in every battle they fought. It was not the only weapon used by a soldier, and, in most cases, it was not the first weapon to be used by anyone in pitched battle, but if it was there, it _would_ be used at some point or the other over the course of the battle. The sword was never a backup weapon. It was always carried in battle because it was intended to be used in every battle its wielder fought in. It was just not the primary weapon. The primary weapon was usually a ranged weapon or a polearm (including, lances, which, being spears, are polearms).

Knowing what it was like for them and how important this class of people - their peers are to your societies function...

    Good stream. I've grown up riding horses all my life & it is quite a diff experience vs. combat/cutting in foot. One of the most important things to learn will be "the wheel" or "wheeling the horse". It helps with keeping yourself protected using the horses body & the pulling of the reigns causes the horses head to lean away from your cut. Even such small things as getting the horse to stop exactly where you want requires hundreds of hours of training between you & that horse, you shloud be best friends. So be ready for that b4 getting started. Lol
