A Transforming Bow That's also a Sword AND a Pistol?!

- Combination weapons from the Middle Ages and especially Renaissance can be quite strange, cramming a number of functions into a complicated design, often an intentionally difficult feat of craftsmanship. But few oddities are quite as intriguing as a weapon that transform between bow and sword mode, while also including a compact firearm (about 30 years before the earliest wheel-lock pistols).
Let's take a closer look at this strange concept that seems like it comes straight from the mind of a fantasy artist or video game designer, but is actually found in a manuscript from 1505.
Also a good excuse to resurrect ye olde END HIM RIGHTLY meme! It's on topic, I swear. :)

How did you like that intro?
Now we need to find someone skilled and crazy enough to try to make this thing.
That would be so amazing!
Skall. gun, shot. bow, arrows. u forgot the bow part. the sheath is just the quiver.
excellent video, the weapon possible, even probably some work on prototype has been made - it is too detailed to be fully fictional.
surely was expensive to make...
Those are my favourite kind of videos, it's so hard to find all theese weird weapon from the past... I'm and italian game/fiction artwork designer, and theese things are a true inspiration goldmine

Any comments I would add pale in comparison to this one.
Omgosh that 1500’s chair is more advanced than modern ones. Why? Because it has a balls holder I mean how genius is that?! I’m going to modify all my chairs like that lol
Massive holder right here. GET YOUR HOLDER 😂
I’m glad I’m not the only one who noticed that lmao
Any chair with a carved scrotecup is a chair worth fighting for.
Funny, it kinda looks like a spoon. A spoon for his wood perhaps?
I really want to build that cup holder chair.

Dude would probably get along with the Voynich Manuscript person.
Right now, in a small ton in Saskatchewan, a young Steve Spoonwood has looked up from his sketched of his time machine and found a REASON to travel the 4th dimension.
Actually we already know who wrote the voinich, they just refuse to make a calligraphy test in order to officially confirm it, because the dude already has a ton of shit on his name and it doesn't need that one too
Someone needs to send this one to Tod for his weird weapons series XD
You know, I think he actually could. I mean, he's obviously _capable_ of it, but legally, I think he would be allowed as (IIRC) black powder weapons aren't classified as "firearms" by UK law.
Be a nightmare to engineer, though, and Health and Safety would definitely _not_ approve. Imagine if the hinge gave way while the bow was strung.
At the very least I’d love to see Tod break it down from his perspective.

I wonder if Joerg would be interested in attempting that bow, sword, gun, thing...
you wonder?? i'm surprised he hasn't already shown us its features ...
He would have to adapt an air powered version.... someone show him this PLEASE
Bowordun???
Thanks for the 3D animation. It helped with showing how the weapon transformed. This is a really cool idea that would fit in with a fantasy setting, even if it would require some suspension of disbelief since the current design looks fragile.
I think with a fantasy metal(that is flexible like spring steel but even stronger) and a somewhat more robust design the result would be a fantasy weapon that's ideal for use against living foes but fairs poorly against undead.
A magically-enhanced memory metal would work too, just charge it up to straighten and sharpen it, then disharge it to switch it back to bow mode lol.
@@gigaslave That's one way to do it, though without enhanced strength would like chip or break from use in sword mode unless it sees minimal use in that mode or the user manages to end the fights before damaging the blade.

@@then00brathalos you know, I bet it could be done. I saw a guy make a full size Dragonslayer from Berserk, and when I say full size, I mean it literally is a hunk of iron that he had to lift with heavy equipment. It was extraordinary.
Dude made the first gamer chair! In all seriousness mr. spoonwood was a genius
it gets even better, his full name is "Martin Löffelholz von Kolberg" or in english "Martin Spoonwood of Cabbagemountain"
This guy was building up Bloodborne trick weapons before it was cool.
Thats straight up: Simon's Bowblade
the pommel throw into a cut was so smooth hahaha
In general, the more tasks that you design a mechanical device to do, the less well it will do each of them.
Definitely like the early manuscript reviews and would watch more.
That is one crazy crazy thing. However there are two notable points I would be worried about. Equal and opposite - point the (relatively massive) pommel at someone, push the go button and the pommel moves forward and the point moves backward.....Secondly the discharge would be in inside a heavy sealed tube, and I would expect the breach to fairly quickly break away from the barrel and basically become the projectile moving backward and toward the shooter. So all in all not a winner.. Good point talking about the wheel lock mech - really interesting.
Yeah, the pommel launcher is only good for memes, wouldn't actually work. The bow is probably also on the weak side.
Then to launch a massive pommel you need a massive launcher, preferably one so long you can't accidentally point its other end at your own squishies (like so many young Germans did with their early grenade-chucker).
How about a 240 cm staff made of two halves clamped together around a steel tube, just like an SMLE or Kar98, having a pommel fitted over the exposed end of each tube and retained by a spring, like a rifle grenade, with each pommel having a steel tube that extends back from its centre up the inside of the main tube? That way your pommels can have their own propellant inside their own tubes, capped with a primer, and the tube just needs the striker mechanism, like the RPG-7 system.
You'd just have to brace one end against a tree while you aimed and fired the other.
I'd also like to see Tod talk about the entire thing and the tools inside. I mean, I already saw that on a German channel, but for one he has the bigger audience and for the other, more perspectives are alwaysuseful.
Build one... build one... build one... 😁😁😁😁
I love some combination weapons but never really considered that adding in the ability to rightly end people would add more potential combos.
I'm glad to see that my middle school notebook margin doodles are historically accurate.
10 years ago: unscrew the pommel. Today: Reload the pommel
Came to see the odd multi weapon thing, left thinking of the 1500’s era gaming chair.

So what I'm gathering is that this guy invented the office chair over 450 years before cubicles even entered widespread use. That guy was crazy ahead of his time.
Man... I missed this kinda videos about medeival or semi-medeival weird tech thigies. Great job, definitely wanna see more!
Interesting, Cuba was colonized in 1492. There were jousts and knightly games happening at the same time that spanish steel and native weapons were clashing, that's pretty neat

That animation was extremely helpful. Good on the contributor!
What a rad community you have here Skall
I don´t know if it was useful, but the fact that this can work, and that the guy thought about it in 1505 is really impresive
Very cool video, especially the info on the periods certain manufacturing techniques were starting to become common.
I demand more of these videos so I don’t go crazy at work!

I think those bolts are actually the intended projectiles for the bow configuration.
Really good video, Skall. This stuff is so cool. Yes, I would like to see more.
The intro was fantastic!! I love these dives into the manuscripts, especially when they have really cool gadgets and weapons like this.
The office chair has a ball rest...
Fancy.
The Codex Löffelholz has a bunch of really cool depictions. One of my favorites is the dressup as a dead man, it looks like something straight out of Dark Souls. Another cool German book with a bunch of really cool depictions is the Housebook of Wolfegg Castle (often just called Wolfegger Hausbuch) from around 1480. For example, it shows a late medieval wagon fortress and also a city armee on the move both in the context of the Siege of Neuss (1474-75). And it also contains a lot of depicitons of just normal people working and what kind of equipment they used. Although it's sometimes a bit confusing, because you can have scenes from different contexts in the same overall picture. There is for example a scene where a bunch of dudes on horses set fire to a village in the context of a feud and in the foreground of the same picture there are people stabbing each other, but those are actually not part of the feud depictions but seperate depictions of a pilgrim getting robbed and some sort of town person getting robbed and stabbed in his house.
I love this kind of historical content Skal!
I really like his artword. Super legible for 1505 standards, but also really nicely stylistic. Good inspiration.
The combo weapon is entertaining, but reeedonkulous. I would love to see more things like this on your channel.
This was incredibly fascinating . I would absolutely LOVE to see more videos going of manuscripts like this in the future ! So please make this a regular series !
Please more historical stuff. Your delivery makes learning history enjoyable..
Love yer stuff Skall. More looks at goofy/interesting manuscripts sounds like a good time.
Self inflicted pommelnade to the nads. Enough material for two seasons of America's Funniest Home Videos right there.
Thank You for adding the "office" chair into the video - that was good "wow" moment. It might be very interesting video just to browse through the book, if there is more to see.
If he doesn't, the entire thing is on Wikipedia, link in the description.
Hell yeah! I for one would love to see more content like this. Keep em coming, Skal.
Awesome, yes please do more like this! The actual manuscripts make modern inventiveness pale!
Great editing, and yes, I love these sorts of videos.
Let me sit on my gamer chair like it's 1505
Yes the revolver knive.
there was a rifle sword too, wasn't there? breech loaded or something. more or less a permanent edged bayonet on a shorter barreled rifle kind of idea. i recall seeing something about it years back, but i can't recall whether it was something someone actually tried to make, or something someone came up with for old D & D games.
Gotta love Medieval Weapons :P Great Vid Skall ,))
This is amazing! I'll love going through such documents! Thank you for pointing this one out! 👍
This chair got me. I love vids with about the weird and unusual designs. :)
This strikes me as more of an intellectual exercise than something the creator actually thought would be practical.
Great video Skall would love these kinds of videos
More manuscript material please!!
Definitely want more like this, there is such gold in the manuscripts. Talhoffer alone could keep you busy for a year
Cool video dude.

Hey Skallagrim I would love to see more videos about crazy inventions or idea for inventions such as this! Maybe some DaVinci kind of plan for weapon
This is awesome! Please do more!
yes please!
I love watching old mechanisms and weapon designs, it's very inspiring for fantasy settings. I'm intrigued by the self cocking crosssbow and any weapon that looks like a medieval person used a time machine.
I'm really intrigued about how far can you go whith pre industrial technology, because I want to create a fantasy world where people have advanced stuff that could be made in the middle ages or the renaissance. Like steampunk but whithout steam engines. Woodpunk? Renaissancepunk? Davincipunk?
Awesome video keep this type of content coming
These are the videos I want to see more of from you. 5-15 minute history, swordfighting lessons.
Recently rediscovered your videos, don't know why I ever stopped watching, you do great work
Manuscript videos are great. Real life weapons that might as well be fantasy designs are also great. Definitely the kind of stuff I love seeing here on your channel.
Yes more manuscript videos please. Also, I want that chair !
I would gladly watch you making sort of a review of a old manuscript. The engineering ones seem to be pretty interesting.
More manuscript videos would be really cool to see. I love looking over this kind of thing.
Its verl interenting. It will be nice to see videos about bizarre weapons designed in old times. I still remember the video about the hammer with bunch of small shooting mechanism integrated into its working side.

Looks like Tod's got his next idea for his next weird weapon series...
Also, according to the Cody Firearms Museum's former curator there is documentation that the first wheellocks were invented in 1504, not the 1530s. We know because Maximilian I of the HRE issued a law in the same year restricting their sale to anyone without his permission.
Haha, this is an awesome video.
Would be fantastic to see more videos like this looking at fantasy weapons in real manuscripts. lol

Great video.
I'd love to see more like that
I appreciate the opening; like an advanced "end him rightly" reference.
Please do more of those, this is very interesting!
Part 2 video on multi functional weapons would be a good idea
This is fun. The things that make bow limbs good are antithetical to the things that make swords good etc. At least gun axes don't normally try to fire the axe head.
Not really, they both need to be strong, flexible, and lightweight.
@@DH-xw6jp Bow limbs also need to be light relative to the amount of force it takes to bend them. Steel is really, really bad at that. The only reason they could get away with it in crossbows is because they could just increase the draw weight and energy stored to ridiculous extremes due to the use of mechanical spanning devices, which you can't do with a bow.
Please share more manuscripts. I love these
That was awesome! More please!
