    Hi Sarah!! So two updates I thought I would share with you: 1) I submitted my PharmCAS application yesterday for University of Florida (#GoGators 🐊), and hopefully I get accepted for Fall 2025 🙏. 2) I realized that I’m officially going to start working as a pharmacy technician next month. Because for current pharmacy techs who are planning on starting their pharmacy schools this fall, there will be a lot of “Help Wanted” signs posted in every pharmacy. So I’m hoping that I can finally start working 😁😁😁👨‍⚕️👨‍🔬💊💉🧪

    I also was an over achiever in high school graduated with an overall 4.0gpa was in the colorguard and many clubs I only applied at one college which was CSUN I just wanted to stay close to home because I’m an only child and lived with my mom who was a single mom and I didn’t want to leave her because she was sick and older. When I was near the end of my freshman year I found out I was pregnant at 18 years old. So I decided to take a break and not return for my sophomore year and became a pharmacy technician finished the course a week before my baby was born. So then I got some work experience as a pharmacy tech I worked in a long term care pharmacy, I worked retail at a small pharmacy in an office building and then also worked in a hospital. Until I found out I was pregnant with my second baby my husband and I decided to move out of LA to central CA and I’ve been a stay at home mom for the last 12 years. We got married and had 6 kids my youngest will be entering school next year so I’ve been looking into going back to work as a pharmacy tech and going back to school to become a pharmacist. I know it’ll be hard specially with 6 kids but know I can do it there’s no bigger motivation than my kids and being able to show them that it’s never too late. So basically I did everything backwards started my family and raised my babies in my 20s and will be going to school and working in my 30s 😄 I just turned 33 so if all goes well I’ll be a pharmacist in my 40s 😊

She inspired me and said she was also a young mother and she went to school while her son was in school and her journey was longer than planned but she did it she was like look at me now I’m finally a pharmacist so if I can so can you. That always stuck with me.

      congrats on getting your pharmacy technician license! Hospitals love asking situational questions regarding multiple tasks you need to do (phone call, urgent compound, tasks asked by pharmacist, etc) so make sure you practice explaining how you would prioritize and the thought process behind it. There may not be a correct answer, but they want to hear your thought process and how you communicate it! They also want to make sure you get along with others so try your best to come off as positive as possible (try to not bash on other coworkers or people when you explain stories)

      After graduating from high school, I attended a university and majored in biochemistry. You can choose any science major (doesn't need to be biochemistry). I would highly recommend to join some sort of pre-pharmacy society or organization on campus to see if theres any pharmacy volunteering opportunities. During college, I would prioritize getting pharmacy experience such as volunteering at a hospital pharmacy or working part time at a community pharmacy. When you apply for pharmacy school, you will need 3 letters of recommendation and at least one of them must be from a pharmacist.

    Dr. Sarah, I do have a question for you. So, here shortly, they are trying to have pharmacists be able to proscribe as well, which fun fact over in the UK; they already can after completing their residency and taking their boards (I always found it to be very interesting, seeing as how pharmacist whole degree program is to understand drugs and how they work within the body. they never could prescribe) do you think that would be something that pharmacist should have to power to do? A pharmacy intern and I were talking about that, and we both felt that pharmacists should be able to prescribe, especially those who have gone through a residency and specialize.

    • @SarahPharmD
      @SarahPharmD Před měsícem

      Some pharmacists can prescribe here in the US under their scope of practice! For example, a diabetes pharmacist can prescribe and adjust diabetes medications but not other medications that do not fall into their practice. Theres many different types of pharmacists and usually those that are able to prescribe have a collaborative practice agreement with the hospital or clinic that breaks down what types of medications they can prescribe.

    • @SarahPharmD
      @SarahPharmD Před měsícem

      We have a doctorate degree so I have a Dr title, just like how people with PDH have a Dr title as well. I only use the title for my social media to educate the community, but I don’t tell patients my title because I do agree that it can be confusion. That being said, I worked hard to earn that Dr title so I will continue to use it. Hence why I end my name with PharmD to clarify.

    • @user-jr6pv8mb9o
      @user-jr6pv8mb9o Před měsícem

      doctor was derived from latin and it meant a teacher and an academic. If we’re trying to credit the term here it should actually go to the academics aka PhDs. Doctors of Pharmacy, Dentistry, etc deserve the title as well as it is also a terminal degree and they earned it. I agree that it can be misleading in a clinical setting since most people know of doctors = physicians but hey, this is CZcams and in no way did she give unsolicited medical advice.

    • @thatoneannoyingguy459
      @thatoneannoyingguy459 Před 28 dny

      The first thing I want to say is congratulations to Dr. Sarah. You got to where you are through your own hard work, dedication, and sacrifices. No matter what people say, you are deserving of the title of Dr. Now to the commenter: the way this comment comes off to me is that you want the title of “Dr.” to be exclusively used for physicians to avoid confusion. To that, I say, this is a very short-sighted view. What about the professors and researchers who help advance medicine? Is it about being in a hospital? Then what about surgeons or other specialists? Can they not use the title of “Dr.” because they’re not physicians? Pharmacists work in hospitals too. This reminds me of the argument that DOs are not real doctors because they’re not MDs, even though they take the same tests. A doctorate indicates that you have enough knowledge and experience to be an expert in your field, that’s it. What irritates me is the arrogance in your comment. I know that most physicians don’t choose to be physicians but are rather forced to become one because they didn’t do well in med school. From your comment, I sense that this is the same case with you. You are just projecting what little power you think you have over people you believe are beneath you. GROW UP.

    • @SarahPharmD
      @SarahPharmD Před měsícem

      Hmm, some alternative routes or strategies you can take that comes to mind are: - Oftentimes people will move to less popular cities to get their foot in the door to work for major hospitals/facilities such as Kaiser or the VA. Once you are working for them, it would be easier to transfer from within to a more preferred area since most of these hospitals hire internally first before they hire people outside. - Or you can start off in a less desirable position until a better one becomes available within your hospital. For example, when I first started working, I was a graveyard hospital pharmacist for ~7 months until a full day position opened up and I was able to switch to that! - Some people even go into the pharmacy industry field working as medical writers etc (I don't know too much about this field to explain, but I do know people who have gone this route!) - There are also some phone-based positions in which you do medication reviews and patient interviews etc

    Hi Sarah!! Two quick questions: 1) Is hospital pharmacy and clinical pharmacy the same jobs? And 2) If I decided to do pharmacy residency in compounding pharmacy, how many years of residency should I do?

    • @SarahPharmD
      @SarahPharmD Před měsícem

      1) It depends on the facility! At my hospital, ALL hospital pharmacists are clinical pharmacists since we do a mixture of both hospital administrative tasks and clinical tasks. At some hospitals, they have very clear and distinct roles - some pharmacists are strictly only hospital pharmacists that manage administrative/central IV pharmacy tasks and some pharmacists are clinical pharmacists that only do clinical tasks. 2) Pharmacy residency PGY1 is always just one year! PGY1 is usually a more general residency. If you decide to specialize in a field, you would pursue a PGY2 pharmacy residency which is an additional 1 year. Pharmacy Residency does not usually exceed more than that :) If you want to do compounding pharmacy, I would say a PGY1 should be enough!

    Not sure if you've covered these in other videos, but I have two questions. 1. Do you have an L.A. City Fire Card? If so, where did you the training? There are too many options online and I don't know what's legit and what isn't. 2. Do you have Blood Borne Pathogen certification? Is that helpful as a pharmacy technician and/or pharmacist? If so, again, where did you take the training? I don't need either of these yet, but since my resume is virtually non-existent I'm looking to take the initiative and find something to put on there that shows I've thought about some of the things that aren't obvious. Let me know when you get a chance and keep up the good work. Thanks in advance!

    • @SarahPharmD
      @SarahPharmD Před měsícem

      1. No I don't have a LA City Fire Card I believe. However, all of my certifications are through my work - so most likely if its required of your workplace, they will help you set it up or refer you to places to get it done! 2. Honestly I can't recall if I have been Blood Borne Pathogen certified. I may have in the past when it was a requirement for rotations or internships or work etc. Personally, I don't think employers will look for this when reviewing a resume - but if its free or cheap, then I guess it doesn't hurt? But if its expensive or time consuming, I wouldn't pursue it. However, I do love that you are working hard to try to make yourself stand out! Rooting for you :)

    Just found this video, great to have someone record their journey. I'm about to start a pharmacy technician program to become a CPhT but ultimately want to go all the way for a PharmD. Still have 25-30 years of work left, so we'll see how it goes... but I'm sure these videos will be super helpful!
