  • I get a lot of questions about the future of the pharmacy profession. How is the job market? Is it really as saturated as people claim? Is there any growth? What are the job prospects like in the United States?
    Today's video will hopefully help answer those questions! I will go over the annual Pharmacy Demand Report (PDR) 2022 report with you in this video and give you my thoughts and also stories from other pharmacists.
    This video is meant for educational purposes and to provide some insight.

    As you said its a bit competitive so what are the skills they see in a clinical pharmacits to give them a position?

    • @SarahPharmD
      @SarahPharmD  Před rokem +4

      Most people apply for a pharmacy residency and then obtain their BPS credentials to become a competitive applicant. If they are not able to obtain a residency position, gaining experience in the field and being proactive in the industry (networking at pharmacy associations, joining a committee related to their field of interest, etc) may possibly help!

    Is Rx prep enough to go through in order to pass the Naplex ?
    And which books did you prefer for CPJE ??

    • @SarahPharmD
      @SarahPharmD  Před rokem +3

      RxPrep had an online CPJE Review with practice questions, that helped me A LOT. For books, I used the Pharmacy Practice and Tort Law book to review the law material. CPJE is very different from the other pharmacy law exams because it has a lot more clinical questions than law questions. I would recommend to take the NAPLEX and CPJE close together so that your clinical knowledge will be fresh for the CPJE and you don't have to re-review clinical information twice.

    What state do you work at? Does every state have their own set of rules & regulations for prescribing authority? Which state is the best? Do you have to update licenses yearly or something related to that for clinical or hospital pharmacists? Thank you. I live in NY, but I want to move to the west coast or near the west coast.

    • @SarahPharmD
      @SarahPharmD  Před rokem +2

      California! I don't know much about the other states, but I hear that California is one of the most progressive states for pharmacists to work. A lot of us here have a high scope of practice depending on the facility - meaning we have some sort of prescribing authority under a collaborative practice agreement with the hospital and providers at the hospital/facility. We usually have requirements to maintain our practice - such as continuing education requirements and we have annual evaluations in which they make sure that we are still clinically strong by evaluating our notes and our work. I hope this helps!

    Hi Sarah, can you recommend any book or online site to know about the indication, mechanism, interaction, and contraindication of the medicine? thank you

    • @SarahPharmD
      @SarahPharmD  Před rokem +1

      The Tarascon Pocket Pharmacopoeia lab coat edition is a good booklet for drug indication, dosing, adjustments, contraindications etc! It doesnt’t really go into the mechanism, but it’s a good detailed reference otherwise and it fits in your white coat! Website such as micromedex and lexicomp are good, but you need access through a hospital or school. RX prep book is a good one for pharmacy students. I should rec P1-P3 students to just buy or borrow an old edition to supplement your courses and then buy the most updated version when you study for your boards. I hope this helps!

    Hey Sarah ,thank you for the video, i want to ask about the difference between Clinical pharmacist and hospital pharmacist
    Also can you please tell me about the requirements to become a clinical pharmacist in USA (I'm from India)

    • @SarahPharmD
      @SarahPharmD  Před rokem +4

      Some hospitals have a distinction between clinical pharmacists and hospital pharmacists in which their roles and tasks are clearly split. The hospital pharmacist does more hands-on tasks overseeing the pharmacy technicians in terms of checking the IV compounds that the technicians make, checking that the crash carts and anesthesia trays are accurately filled, verifying orders that come in, answering and triaging phone calls from nurses/doctors, etc. The clinical pharmacist does the clinical tasks such as dosing vancomycin, dosing heparin/warfarin/lovenox/DOACS, adjusting TPNs, discharge counseling etc.
      However, at my hospital - ALL the pharmacists are considered Clinical Hospital Pharmacists because we do both.
      Clinical pharmacists can also be on the outpatient side working in clinics - these are called ambulatory care pharmacists. They adjust medications specific to a disease state. For example, a diabetes ambulatory care pharmacist has the scope to be able to adjust and manage diabetes medications. They are not allowed to adjust other medications that are not within their scope of practice.
      In order to become a clinical pharmacist, most go through pharmacy residency training. This will be 1-2 years depending on what you want to do.

    How do I progress as a foreign pharmacist here? I just got licensed and would love to qualify to apply to residency for example regardless of how competitive they tell me it is. But what other credentials can I acquire to stay updated and progress in the field here?

      You can look into how to become an Advance Practice Pharmacist! It’s an extra optional credential that would help you move up in your career

    What work do you like as Clinical Pharmacist ?
    Do we get a patient interaction by being a Clinical Pharmacist ?

    • @SarahPharmD
      @SarahPharmD  Před rokem +1

      I love being a clinical pharmacist! Every role for a clinical pharmacist will differ depending on your hospital. For my hospital, I have a good mixture of being able to work independently (completing pharmacy consults and dosing medications) but I also get to interact with patients at the end of the day by providing bed side discharge counseling. Not all clinical pharmacists will have this. For some clinical pharmacists, their patient interaction will be more phone based in which they interview the patients over the phone and adjust their medications based on what information they gather.

    My mom keeps insisting that I should have went to college to be a pharmacist. Never mind the fact that I don’t have the grades or interest. She only cares about money. I have no interest in working long hours or dealing with other people and their problems.

    • @SarahPharmD
      @SarahPharmD  Před 6 měsíci

      the hours can vary quite a lot, especially for hospital pharmacy since the hospital is open 24/7. The different shifts we have at my department are: 730 am - 4:00 pm, 10:00 am - 6:30 pm, 3:00 pm - midnight, 7:00 am - 7:00 pm (12 hour day shift) , and 7:00 pm - 7:00 am (12 hour graveyard)

    Hey Sarah, I really wanted to major in pharmacy but my parents didn't approve. I am currently taking a diploma in environmental health. Do you think it's good to switch majors to pharmacy if I later take a bachelor's degree?
    Sorry for my english, I'm still a beginner.

    • @SarahPharmD
      @SarahPharmD  Před rokem

      Your bachelors doesn’t need to be in pharmacy to get into pharmacy school! You can be any science major, but as long as you complete/pass all the required courses that pharmacy school program requires - that should be good enough. I was a biochemistry major in college and I still got into pharmacy school. What’s great is that if I changed my mind and didn’t pursue pharmacy, that general science degree would be applicable to other medical fields.
