'When he comes to making big decisions, he doesn't make them' Spot on by SJ.
Spot on when talking about the Croatia and Italy games too.
@@unmasked8861 beat Croatia last year what are you talking about
@@lrtvhighlights3687 He's talking about the world cup semi you melt.
He wasn't able to turn the Italy and Croatia games. However there's an assumption that England were the better team - these were even games, and lost by a whisker. He also won the the other 5 knockout games he faced, and is now out of three groups. The idea that 'Germany doesn't count' because it was a poor German team is ridiculous. It's like every achievement is swept away and played down, but we pump up the two we lost by the finest of margins, as if these were debacles. They weren't, they were the closest we've been to winning a tournament since 1966.

Simon spot on. Pearce is clueless... remember when he picked Joe Allen over Beckham for the GB Squad and how well they did!

Simon Jordan says what most of us are thinking. For Pearce to call it a ridiculous statement tells you all about him and the sycophants that surround Southgate. He blew it against Croatia in 2018 and again in 2021 in the Euro Final.
Foden proved he should be a first team pick but cometh the Hour, Southgate will leave him on the bench and play to keep the score level going into extra time. Then he will put his best penalty kickers on. Thatâs his mindset.
He inherited a national team reeling from the Iceland disgrace....people have short memories....
@@2011hwalker Brazil 5 WC wins! Germany 4, Italy 4, Argentina 2, France 2. 56 years of failure and counting. The fact is this England team have had a chance of winning and have yet to do so. A manager willing to take a risk would have won the Euro Final and possibly that semi against Croatia and then who knows what would happened in the Final. . Being pragmatic wins sweet FA.
That is true.
Southgate brought us back from a dark period of England football which went south after World Cup 2006.
McLaren failed England in 2008, as we didnât qualify for the euros. Capello failed us in South Africa 2010, when we got knocked out by Germany in the round of 16, Roy Hodgson failed us with the euros 2012(penalty shootout in the round of 16 to Italy) then he failed again with a group stage exit at Brazil 2014, and the terrible Iceland humiliation in euro 2016.
Southgate brought us back to the semis, first time in a major tournament since Euro 96, and the first time we were back in the quarters( the bare minimum to be expected for England) since 2006.
To say heâs been awful is a bit short sighted, but he hasnât been able to get England over the line. Something he should have achieved in Euro 2020.
â@@KindaKhul0205 LOL why are you quoting wins from the 60s and 50s and earlier, international football was basically 6-8 serious teams in that period . Success in modern football is far, far from a given. All modern WC teams are very competitive and very well organized. Fun fact Germany have won just *one *World Cup match since they lifted the trophy in 2014. Italy arent even *at* the world cup. So whats your judgement on their international coaches-should they just abandon football. There is luck and skill needed to win modern tournaments. England have had a good run from 2017 onwards. Simon Jordan comes off as a clown who views "success" as some laughable binary measure of whether or not you win the World Cup. If thats the metric then Germany and Brazil should close up shop because they havent won squat in the last 6 years.
@@2011hwalker England have had great draws in the last three tournaments. Colombia in the last16 off the WC, Then Sweden in the QF. Should have beaten Croatia to get to their first final since 66. Golden opportunity missed.
Euros, again, fantastic draw which was basically a Home Tournament. Should have won the final but decided to hold on to a 1-0 lead. Poor!
This tournament, Iran, Wales, USA. Canât get a better draw than that. Should beat the Senegalese in the last 16 and then itâs not until the QF that you come up against a top team. Fantastic draw!
Southgate has been extremely lucky in his Tournament draws. That said he done well to beat the weaker teams. Itâs not always done. However, he got to beat a top team yet. To win theses tournaments you have got to beat one of the Elite Nations. He has the squad. Itâs down to how he uses it.
Foden is the best with a ball at his feet. Can dribble, beat a man an create space for others. Plus find that gap in the opposition box. He should be an automatic pick. This crap that he and Mount canât play in the same side. Nonsense. Then there is Trent Alexander. His accuracy in passing and crossing the ball is badly needed to break teams down. Playing with his Club Captain Jordan Henderson is a must.
This wonât happen! Southgate is pragmatic. He wonât take a risk and his Tippy Tappy boring football with Maguire , Stones and Rice passing the ball back to each other at the back will have us snoring by half-time. He got to unleash this Squads potential by actually going on an all out attack. Unfortunately, we will come home emptied handed never ever giving it a right go.
It will inevitably happen again. Southgate will revert to type. Mount in for Foden. Pressure increases, Southgate reverts to a Rabbit-caught-in-the-headlights. Doesn't make a substitution. England play well against teams that can't run, in Wales and Iran. The USA showed us Senegal is going to be one hell of a tough game. It will be like Cameroon at Italia 90 when we somehow got through despite being thoroughly outplayed, outfought and out thought.
Oh he does make a substitute but makes a negative like Henderson, oh we can play well it's more like Southgate doesn't read the game well and I think that frustrating the players and us fans we know they can play well, just FA won't employ someone who is willing to be brave against the FAs wishes
I'm old enough to have watched the Cameroon game...we were never out fought for one... Cameroon came on strong for a 20 min period second half but England regained their composure kept their nerve and sealed the game... Cameroons problem was they couldn't tackle properly... excellent team but with that one big flaw
Spot on! This will be a replay of Cameroon 90 except Senegal will win
@@the701squad1 That Cameroon win was probably one of the best KO game World Cup Final wins England have ever done and no one talks about it. Such an underrated win. Was it Venables or the late Sir Bobby Robson in charge?
Maddison creativity in front of bellingham and rice would be a treat

Simon Is the only one not drinking the Southgate Kool-Aid !
Senegal will be his first true test at the World cup and when the going gets tough , I predict Southgate will go back to his default settings of defensive pragmatic approach!
what do england have to fear tho? yes the expectation is high due to the quality of the team but we've still won nothing. Might as well play better than we have been restricting especially against the Italians, US and Scotland(the croatia game was totally one sided after the first half which i dont blame gareth for). Walker's recovery pace can surely allow us to play the high line, come on gareth i'm still behind you.

Stuart Pearce doesnât think number 10 role âsuitedâ Bellingham. This is a man that played David James as a centre forward in a Premier League game.
Ha ha yes he seems to have conveniently forgot about that.
I can't stand Stuart Pearce. People complain about Gabby but this pathetic man shouldn't be on tele as a pundit.
Bellingham can play anywhere
Bellingham was good there. He played it a bit like Ballack at Leverkusen.
I have NEVER seen Gareth Southgate be pro-active in a "sparaggio" (a very important match) The two matches where
his lack of pro-activity cost England the games were Croatia and Italy. And if Stuart Pierce doesn't see that . Then he is of
the same ilk as Southgate. I was crying out that Ashley Young was being outrun by the Croatians and Southgate froze.
And it cost us the match. Foreward to the Italy final. Southgate decided that 1-.0 was good enough for England. When we
had the Italians rattled in the first half. And more than likely would of scored another . If Southgate wouldn't of got into
his default mode of being defensive. EVERYTHING that Simon Jordan has said about Gareth Southgate was correct.
BUT as a football odds compiler. I will know how to quote England when they play a 50-50 match against another
country with an astute manager. And it wont be each of two.
This is not Football Manager 2023 :)
spot on, Southgate gets such a free pass from the media it's crazy, they are so out of touch with normal England fans on this
English football fans overvalue England's chances, so it's profitable to lay England as somebody living in England.
Perfectly put Simon, Southgate needs to be proactive NOT reactive when the horse has bolted!
Simon needs to be a TV pundit, in a proper studio with the football heavyweights.
Every England manager in the last 50yrs has been reactive over proactive!!!
Pearce is missing the point. Southgate has been the most successful since '66 but this is despite Southgate not because of him. A quality manager would have been able to get us over the line against Croatia and Italy. It's the same problem Belgium have, quality players but crap manager is why they have never been successful
So what was the problem from 2002 to 2012? Our squad was way better then. Full of elite players from Man U, Chelsea and Liverpool that dominated Europe at the time.
Sven and Capello both World class proven managers yet did far worse than Southgate. People need to just accept he's done amazing
Spot on about Rice, we were mentioning that watching the game.
Pearce is so far up southgates backside that he canât give an honest appraisal!!!
There's a question mark still on Southgate when it comes to overcoming the top managers (The Germany game at Wembley last year aside), and there's still a feeling that he will be found wanting when he does meet someone like Deschamps for example. He will more than likely apply the handbrake completely and we will get done. I Would loved to be proved wrong tho.
totally agree with Simon the jury's still out on whether England can overcome their
negative mentality against top opposition at key moments in big matches.
I'm waiting to see how Harry Maguire copes when he has forwards running at him, has had an easy ride so far.

England's record in ko games against the 'big nations' on foreign soil is absolutely shocking!
We've never beaten Germany, Italy, Brazil, Argentina, Holland, etc in those type of games. Only at home have we managed to win any.
Unless my memory is deceiving me?
Maybe because England is not part of this club of 'big nations'. I believe last time England won against one of them was Argentina in 2002.
@@MrRikouz beat Germany in the euros last year though
@@Whatagoal500 Wembley is foreign soil them
Totally agree with Simon Jordan. The narrative seems to be that because England have reached the further stages in the last few tournaments and they haven't been knocked out by the likes of Iceland, then he has done an amazing job. The bar has been set so low because of past horrendous underachievement by England than any marginal excess is blown over the top now.
At the same time, I think Southgate has done a tremendous job in regards to building a positive atmosphere and culture for players to come and play in. Whoever the next England manager is, they should have some good discussions with Southgate to pick his brain on how he has done that, because that element shouldn't be underestimated.
The fact is, performances like 2006 and 2010 were no worse than 2018. Just a harder draw, and, England seem to be drawing less games against poor teams in the groups, but did it again this time.
In 2002, England only made the quarter finals, but definitely looked better than any other team against brazil (who were not playing as poorly as they did against Turkey in the group) and lost 2-1
All this time I thought I was listening to Keown and itâs Robson-Kanu

We did nothing till Rashford banged in a free kick that should have been saved. The goal brought Wales out more and created gaps. We are good When we go ahead but we struggle to get that first goal. That's what worries me. But what Southgate has done off the field is brilliant.
Stop whining. If a Brazilian hit that free kick we would all be lauding it. Welsh team worked hard in first 45 minutes but that came at a cost. Good cross and finish for the Foden goal. If US were so good and Wales so bad then how come they drew 1:1??

Simon is 100% accurate here. Small margins at the highest level are what separates a great manager, from a good manager. Southgate was found wanting. Facts.
The one thing im worried is the stamina of the players on more active opponents or a game that will go beyond 90 mins. But strategically England looks good and offensively England is looking good.

@maskless1087 no its cause the English are bellends
Has he got us playing well - has he made us a tight knit team and is he making us preform well or does he just manage a great team and get the bare minimum there can do
Love SP and his analysis
Tactically southgate is very average, as a holistic manager creating a good environment for the players hes done very well but I just see england beat the better teams with any authority
Pro with Gareth is bringing the team together. That's incredibly important at international level, when the players don't spend a lot of time together on the training pitch. That's something that the underachieving Sven and Fabio failed at.
The cons are the lack of making tactical changes and substitutions soon enough. A smart, tactically-minded number two alongside Gareth would be ideal.
The pro point you make is a really good one, one I think that I have under estimated and under appreciated until recently.
We have the best attacking midfield options I've seen in a long time. Problem is, he often picks the wrong ones, and the team often settles into a pattern of being too safe/patient when what we should be doing is forcing the issue with the quality we supposedly have. We have so many attacking midfielders of good quality and yet we still need Harry Kane to create goals. And these players do not make chances for him either. This is fine when you're winning, but when you're not it becomes *the* problem. I watched Luke Shaw just standing on the touchline so many times against Wales...no real intent or desire to get forward and try to put a ball around the backline, just standing still and passing sideways or backwards. I was watching this and thought it was the perfect description of the national team. We don't really know how to get the best of what we have at our disposal. Basically it's like we are just making up it as we go and doing whatever to win a game. I'm sure Southgate has a plan but we all know that plan revolves around not losing. I don't enjoy watching us play. Can't wait for a change of manager.
We have so many attacking midfield options and yet Kane plays like Messi. Southgate needs to tell him to stay up front and actually be a striker.
Why are you trying to specify attacking midfielders when England never played with any from 1966-2006? And more notably, don't even have one now
It's meaningless given Scholes, Beckham, Lampard, Gerrard would have all been attacking midfielders if you're being so broad by the standards of the modern 4-1-2-2-1 version of the 4-3-3 that Southgate uses. Most teams play with two "8s" rather than a "10" and they come from a deeper position to take the space, and inverted wingers aren't attacking midfielders unless you're being very broad (maybe in a 4-2-2-2 you can make the argument)
You must be, as England plays with no attacking midfielders (number 10), or wider attacking midfielders who are clearly not more winger than midfielder. Thus your point is moot because if a very long time means 2006, then that's only one generation of player back and all 3 of the golden gen mids would be a bellingham role in modern football
@@cockoffgewgle4993 if Kane doesn't do that the team doesn't create that well. They are weak creatively.

Are our preforms good and is it down to Southgate or does he just get good performances from a brilliant team
Southgates teams are scared of losing, and with those players they should be scared of not winning. Itâs a mind set from the manager.
I'd go further and say they're scared of conceding a goal. He's scared of everything and it rubs off on the players
Southgate on the performances of Maguire and Stones in the match vs U.S.A.: "They were absolutely phenomenal."
Yes, they were "absolutely phenomenal" in passing the ball laterally to each other throughout the match.đ¤Śââ
Southgate's "style" in the main = cautious, tentative, fearful, conservative, unimaginative, uninspiring, dull, lacklustre, vapid.
Iâve been following England since the 1986 World Cup. We would have won every tournament (Even USA 94!) if only it wasnât for â . . . . â
Itâs Southgateâs turn again. Completely delusional fanbase.
Simon talking Facts yet again đđź
This is sadly so true of England mainly throughout their history, they very rarely win those 50/50 games,Southgate has surprisingly done well though in these games, but this is what worrys me in the game against France, this is definitely a 50/50 game for obviously both teams,Luck usually has a massive say in these games.
No idea why Pearce didn't get the England job instead of Southgate, he's been an FA yes man since capello.
Stuart Pearce as always makes the most sense when he speaks. As for the draws Southgate gets, it is not by accident, but through his experience that he knows consistency gets you those draws. The lower down you are in the rankings, the tougher your draws. Past England managers have either not had the intelligence to see this or have seen it, but not been able to get the consistency to get England up the rankings. He is also clever enough to know that to ensure he does not run into one of the contenders to win the cup in, in the last sixteen, he need to win his group without question and consistently executes this objective brilliantly while other managers have failed or clumsily found themselves facing these contenders in the last sixteen. So it is unfair on Gareth Southgate to say is fortunate when in fact he is doing a job with a challenge to ensure the team succeeds in a bigger objective and doing it well where other previous England managers failed. Winning consistency is the name of the game and Gareth Southgate has delivered that. The Cup is designed that the very best and most consistent teams will only meet each other in the quarter and semi-finals. Peace and love
Go on, Simon. Keep these guys grounded.
Spot on....I can't think of a knock out game we have won where we have not been expected to win....the only thing close were Germany in the euros but they were a shadow of prev German teams
Simon is spot on!
here we go again with the phrases golden generation and best strength and depth. We've played two of the worst teams in the tournament and a half decent USA and drew. When we play a Brazil or France etc, let's see how we are.
We've definitely improved since Gary Neville was in the team đ
They're both right, thing is who else would u have in instead of Southgate? Allardyce? Dyche? Potter? Overall Southgate has improved Eng to get them into finals. Let's not forget Italy haven't even qualified for the WC, Germany are bottom of the group.
But starting Foden and Rashford against Wales was a brilliant move, because all of em now know if they don't produce they're off and won't start the next one. Foden and Rashford should both start vs Senegal, if they don't produce they know Saka and Sterling are ready to take back their place.
Germany and Croatia were both 50/50 games in last Euros. Croatia were WC finalists full of outstanding players and Germany are an elite team and have been for the majority of history.
Us English have a habit of saying everyone we beat is crap
Southgate is ultra cautious for me instead of putting an attacking side out and going for the win he's content to just sit back and try and hit them on the break, he's too reliant on his favourites and needs to give the younger players a chance, the likes of Bellingham and Saka have been brilliant.
Senegal is a strong team. I am sure Southgate and the players understand that. The problem is convincing this nonsensical, emotional hard to deal with English fans and the hostile media.
I would like to see G nev as england manager and asst. Cara. That will be tragically hillarious đ¤Ł
So far it's like the FA cup where Prem teams play league 2 sides. No disrespect to Wales but they shouldn't even be at the world cup.

Simon your 100% right we have the players but not a good enough Manager
Simon bang on!
Simon spot on as usual
Apart from Simon why does no one ever want to upset or criticise Southgate.
Simon kept it 100. In boxing as a sport one of the common narratives sometimes used as a ducking tactic but when used sincerely is a valid point is "who have they fought?" Southgate has done a lot of great things mentioned by Stuart Pearce, bit let's not be intellectually dishonest 2 aging Croatia and Italian teams got England out of there when it was really show time. Look at the run of games both Croatia and Italy had to get there and compare it to England's in both competitions. England struggle against any 50/50 important games. Its important to be honest about this so expectations are well managed. On the surface "we got to a world cup semi final and euros final" sounds great and is an accomplishment but how did you get there, England got so much luck with that draw but couldn't close the deal at the business end.
USA were the second best team in the group oretty decent and England couldn't beat them. This competition is an opportunity to show the world as this is the business end of the competition and there are no easy games.
Did anybody see the teams Madrid best to win champions league last season? They had no right to win that on paper but they beat the best and deserved it. You have to really go out there and win those important games. England now have to opportunity to show and prove.
The time will tell in this competition. I think England have the quality in the team, but am yet to see them beat a big team when it matters. Senegal will be difficult, but I expect England to win that much. If they don't the writings in the wall. Quarter finals will be England's biggest test since Euros in my opinion, I suspect France will beat USA. If England can beat a team like France at that stage, that will generate real world and deserved confidence and competence they can go all the way. If not it will just further prove Simons pointz which I totally agree with.
I agree totally with Simon, Southgate has shown in the past that he cannot make key moment decisions. Stuart Pierce is prejudiced.
So getting to semi finals and finals is not getting key decisions right ? Absolute nonsense

Thatâs always been the problem. So many people get way too over excited in the early stages of major competitions, and weâve never been properly tested. The second we face a good side, like the US, we revert back to type. Refreshing to hear Simon talk sense and not just jump on the Southgate bandwagon. He has rarely been tested as a coach. @@joelgrosschmidt5507 how was that not a 50/50? They had 7 Bayern starters who won the UCL 2020+ 3 Chelsea starters who won the UCL 2021+Gundogan+Kroos. And England? Pickford, Maguire, Phillips, Rice, Saka etc?
@@joelgrosschmidt5507 Germany 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2018 were all worst.
It was a 50/50 game, Germany are an elite international team who had historically always beaten us. It was a huge win
@@joelgrosschmidt5507 we'd usually still loose tho.
Good old Sareth Gouthgate
Yes they do. The beckham gerrard generation were overrated and their performances in tournaments showed this.
Pearce is not ready.... Simon is 100% correct.... Southgate is always second best against 50/50 teams....
So we was second best against Croatia Germany and Italy last year ? Don't think so
@@lrtvhighlights3687 thats the worst German team and England were schooled by Italy... Croatia whip that trick in the WC semis.... u want me to comtinue?
@@peterchaps7084 semi finals and finals of two major competitions so on that basis why couldn't Fabio capello or Sven achieve this with better squads ? Talking absolute nonsense
@@lrtvhighlights3687 luck of the draw.... make the semi or finals this time.... in WC you beat colombia and Sweden...dwl..
U missing the point and England talent should be winning trophy
Stop settling for BS style of play and grinding results against better team... i can bet u that it will be 5 at the back against France... pragmatism will not win trophy..
@@peterchaps7084 luck of what draw ? You aren't expected to beat any team in any game as Saudi Arabia and Japan and Costa Rica have proven your point is invalid.....
I agree with Simon.
Simon is spot on.
It's true, when it comes to the 50/50 ties England don't have the edge and the initiative to defeat the opponent. They get out-thought when it comes to the crunch.
Oodles of talent in the forwards less in the mid field and perhaps even less at the back
It's funny how the actual ex football players and managers are more interested and pitch their whole argument on off pitch atmosphere and peripherals whilst the so called failed is the only one talking about the actual football nuance...
S/o Simon
Jesus they are drooling over Southgate... Simon is spot on lucky draws and beat teams we should beat...when it comes to 50/50 we lose. We have some of the best attacking talent in the world and don't attack. He leaves people like Kane, mount, Sterling on the pitch way too long when the game has been stagnant. I can appreciate parts of what he has done but he needs to manage differently if he wants to win something major. Simon is spot on...
I love Pearce, but what a yes man.
I wonder if Simon has seen Farley TV he does a great impression.
âIt will be a difficult match but I expect us to get through it.â âŚ. Ha ha !
Have you learned anything Simon.
England produce one decent footballer and they claim him to be the next Zidane
Germany under Klisman before Loe begun there rise by playing attacking Football, then sorted the defence . England under Southgate defends 1st .
Simon is bang on one off the best sports pundits out there says it how it is him and Roy Keane are just alike let's see hoe good Southgate is when he is put to the test against France that's if he beats Senegal if they lose too them hell lose his job
We DO have strength in depth. âGolden generationâ only had the starting 11 as the best playerWe used to bring vassell during that period. Now we have grealish rashford Foden Henderson to bring on if necessary thatâs crazy.
He's right , Southgate's lack of technical nuance cost us that final , has he learned from that encounter.....? đ¤
Simon is spot on and Stuart is just sticking up for his mate. Other bloke don't care what he says as he just blathers.
Since he got these team, he is blessed for having weak group and meeting weak teams
What's Simon's watch?
Declan Rice gets the ball from the centerback. No pressure from behind. Just passes it back to the centerback? He could have turned and played Foden wide immediately. Wales would have been caught off balance.
Stuart Pearce proves heading the ball is dangerous.
Out in the quarters, id put big money on it too
Stuart Pearce another yes man
Wow... Stuart Pearce really overhypes Southgate
Anyone who watched City or England U21's under Pearce will know that Pearce, though a nice genuine guy, was not a good manager. Agree with everything Simon Jordan said about Southgate, lets see if he steps up this time.
I think England should go all the way. Im not sure if its because i watch english players week in week out but the depth in the squad is class
@@saxoninvestments2833 It would be most likely France in QF, then Spain/Portugal in semis, then Brazil/Argentina in final. England's record at beating football powerhouses in major tournaments is very poor. So three in a row?
Not with Maguire in the team and Southgate as manager. England play 10 yards deeper than they would if Tomori mainly due to Southgate not wanting to expose that oaf. Because he plays Maguire, England can't play their strongest attack as you're playing an extra CB just to accommodate him.
Stuart Pearce should be nowhere broadcasting his voice grates on me like no other. I always have to fast forward him .
