Southgate bottled it. He always does. The momentum was in our favour after equalising, he should have been proactive with substitutions and gone for it. What does he do instead? He waits until the moment has gone and we've conceded, then takes off our best player, and tosses on Rashford and Grealish in desperation with seconds to go. Criminal.

Totally agree, youve got the 2nd best free kick taker and best crosser of the ball in the world in trent sitting on the bench, henderson was motm, he took the wtong players off, which is 1 thing, but he also got the tactics wrong as well, the world class teams play like that from the first whistle, not respct the opposition and sit back for 30 minutes. They werent allowed to play or get out of defensive mode until france had scored. A brazil legend recently said, england will win nothing whilst a coach choices to leave a player like trent out of the team and play defensive instead, if he was brazilian hed start every game, reminds me of my old team mate Cafu, cant remember which player it was but this was s world cup winner. His comment was not just about trent, that was just an example of the negative thinking he sees from england coaches, to worried about failing to actually take chances and win things. As klopp says, risk and reward, 3 out of 5 CL titles, every time trent and hendo played psg, with mbappe and neymar they do nothing, haha

Gareth Southgate owes his legacy to the luck of the draw.

Morocco and Croatia are achieving...and if either of them make the final, Southgate must go.

Morocco and Croatia aren't flukes a lot of naysayers said they were, they won because they played with the mentality to win with a coach that knew exactly what the team was good at. For me the biggest disappointment wasn't Kane's penalty miss, it was how the team seemed dead after that. It wasn't like France was puttting up a defensive masterclass (although Lloris was really good), the English attack just seemed dead and tired in the last few minutes.

Also Southgate has never been hit with bad injuries before a tournament or during one, something that certainly plagued Sven. He has been very fortunate in that respect.
My opinion is if he was managing England back in those days we'd still have probably gone out at the same stages, as he's proven in this era, he still can't beat the big teams in KO games, unless there is a home advantage.

Bang on Simon. Southgate has taken this team as far as he could and well done to him for that. Someone else needs to come in and bring the ruthlessness that this team needs to finally close out a tournament win. Not good enough with the talent this squad has. If you look at other teams like Argentina or Croatia, they don't have as much talent on paper but their coach squeezes every extra ounce from each player such that they perform, as a collective, above expectations. England players, on the other hand, seem to play at or below expectations. That comes down to the coaching and strategy.

In comparing the two teams I think there is an element of legend bias there. You're talking about players long since retired so already part of folk lore. Not disagreeing with anything you said about that incredible Brazil side but don't sell your french boys short. They could become only the third team in history to retain the world cup, despite a number of key players injured, including current world player of the year! But there has to be balance, otherwise as 'we' proved we go into a vital game on the back foot, if we had scored first, we wouldn't have gone for the second or third.
The cricket team has shown what happens when someone is brave enough to say, just ho out and play, show what you can do, and unless you make a complete and utter balls up, your in the team for the next game.

The Netherlands and Portugal have never won it and yet the Netherlands went to the finals and to the semifinals more times than England did (3 times to 1 and 5 times to 3, respectively) - but they're not making a fuss about it. They know that's not how the World Cup works.
You never know for sure that you're gonna win it, even with the best team and the best tactics, sometimes you need a bit of luck and the coin doesn't fall on your side. Please can I propose a major change in how we manage and play our international football in England. Look at the England cricket team now. A little over a year ago they were hammered in Australia and then the West Indies. England we dreadful. Since the change of coach and captain a new ethos on how we play the game has come in and has produced startling results. England beat New Zealand and South Africa playing this new attacking at all costs game last summer and now have won (today) a test series in Pakistan. Which by the way is amazing. Same players but a new direction.
The England football team needs to change its attitude to how it plays the game and it needs to get metaphorically on the front foot and literally go for it in matches. England to me look ordinary for too long in matches and seem petrified to try things. There has to be a change. I know cricket is a completely different game to football; however, look at the results. Change the attitude - take away the fear of losing and galvanise the players into becoming confident in winning.
If you always do as you’ve always done then you’ll only ever get what you’ve always got. CHANGE that is what is needed.

I have a great respect for Simon.
When the pre-Match talk was there in all TV Shows , most English commentators ( i mean those who supported England to win ) were more worried about the French attack , particularly Mbappe and Griezmann and they said much of containing the french attack for most of the time. Their projection of the English attack was only after speaking of the French attack . Some commentators even called for a penalty to decide the outcome. That means you placed the faith on Jordan or Pope to come to your penultimate rescue with an assumption that Lorris shall make the mistake , and the rest of 90 mins + Additional time were already decided to be on the defensive .
In contrast, the french, were confident of their attack . They always had the faith that Mbappe or Griezmann would find the nets
With a defensive mindset ends with securing a draw is the limit of victory , whereas , it is always a calculated attack , built on strategy of assault is the path to the victory .
Despite the fact that the french attack was superior and more decisive , England played fantastically well most of the game and gave in everything ,
But the french were more confident.
I think that confidence is going to multiply and is to be carried on till the end of the final.
Based on this confidence and the abilities , i say this before the event ; Look for the match of France vs Morocco. France is going to have the first goal and when the first goal has come for France , Morrocon defence is going to fall apart and a blood bath of goals is likely to follow .

Is it just me or do England look better when we pick up the pace and go at teams. We look pedestrian half the time knocking the ball sideways and backwards at the half way line, that just lets you're opponents get back in position and set up. France looked all over the place when we attacked with some sort of determination!

I agree with what you are saying. pussyfooting around playing triangles in your own half is not going to get you anywhere. As a hopeless amateur defender, even in pub games, I felt the attackers were the most dangerous at pace down the centre. I think England play like this
because they do not trust themselves to stop fast counter attacking teams, they act apprehensive from the off. I read that Maguire and Stones passed the ball over fifty times between them in one game. Southgate is timed beyond belief using his subs.

Great commentary, we can’t keep lauding ourselves and our national team for ‘doing ok’; at some stage they have to win against rated opponents, then we can cheer. (Even I, a naive and inexperienced football watcher, wondered at the time if Kane should take a 2nd penalty against his team mate. And his; let’s say it, appalling over-thought shot, was far worse than I feared. I only feared a good, or at worst, an easy save… ).

For years and years we underperformed as a nation, it turns out petty differences between players from club A vs club B vs club C got in the way of team unity. Gareth has fixed that.
Players now are performing more like a team. But we do not have a manager capable of making us a winning team. That requires great tactics and motivation.
Motivation comes from belief, and deep down I don't believe Gareth sees himself as a winner and a team is a reflection of the manager.
