Except he was wrong about the games he gave Rice. Rice played in a World Cup Qualifier against Turkey and 2 friendlies.
The rules are that you can switch nations even after a full competitive cap if you were under 21/22 at the time. Rice deserves all the hate he gets and more. These players and their parents need to pick a country and stick with it.
@@cockoffgewgle4993 Turkey game was a friendly too, he played 3 friendlies.. they did pick a country, the 1 they were both born and raised in as were the parents ! Irelands only decent team was full of English players, so you must be devastated you couldnt steal 2 more players...
As an Northern Ireland man I'm so proud of Martin. As a young man I remember him playing in belfast for distillery fc. Than going to England the rest is history true gentleman.

Martins an honourable guy, wouldâve been wrong to trick them into commiting at such a young age. Ireland need to focus on developing young Irish footballers instead of tapping up any young English lads with Irish grandparents.
Do you think they chose England because they love the country more? Or because they have a chance of winning a major trophy? Thatâs the same problem I have with the French players, choosing to represent France over their original country, cause with France they have an actual chance of winning the World Cup

Simon finds it strange that a football player was playing all the angles & looking out for himself đ¤Really , as for Martin anyone else remember how he amusingly cut down Adrian Chiles & Vieira & Cannavaro when they had a laugh & joke about Martin , was just magic.
The real issue was the FAI's reliance on getting young British-born players into the Irish youth setups and hoping those players won't just revert back to their birth nation when they're mature enough to make their own choices. The focus really should be on improving the facilities for home grown players at schoolboy level.
Typically, when it comes to homegrown players, Ireland has relied on English academies scouting the best young Irish players and bringing them over at 15/16 to develop but the academies in England are far more competitive than they've ever been with recruitment being global now. Young English players face the same competition at academies of course but the difference is that young English players are getting world class football education at schoolboy level, before they even get into club academies.
The best Irish players are going to end up in England or Scotland so to give them the best opportunity to compete and succeed, they need to be given the tools to do so. That requires massive investment at underage level, from Under 8's to Under 14's so that when they are scouted by English academies they have the ability to compete. Unfortunately, the FAI is basically broke for various reasons that include corruption and incompetence.
Also throw in the fact that football is a minority sport in Ireland, with most people supporting sports that no other country plays. Itâs difficult for the FAI to make a top class international football team magically appear from nowhere. Itâs easy to see why they get drawn down the granny route.
Paying O'Neil and keano millions in salaries
Martin OâNeil a true gentleman and a hugely underrated manager.
Forest got him 10 years too late as a manager when they employed him
Although I can appreciate Martins honesty , as an Irishman I donât take this as a proper excuse. If they never had any ambition to play for Ireland donât pick them simple, Martin clearly knew they werenât interested so donât include them in the squads and give the places to proper Irishman who want to play for our country, itâs simple. Rice took 3 caps from someone else. I donât take this as an excuse Martin sorry, itâs more martins fault than the lads
If someone gives me 2 minutes, the implication was very quickly acknowledged by Simon đ
Martin O Neil's ability to frame every answer within the dichotomy of a number one.. number two ... framework is simply world class.
Sounds like a nice bloke in fairness fair play Martin
Declan rice was singing â up the RAâ a few months before he switched allegiance. Evidently Rice thought he wasnât good enough for England, until he started to believe in himself.

Not really grealishs grandmother came from Ireland to the best of my knowledge shaquille o Neal has no grandparents who are irish
Riceâs parents are Irish
He'd been one spooky target man
Then what was he doing playing for Ireland then in the first place? And why was martin playing them in friendlies if they never intended to play for them?
Iâve said it many times . Iâve no problem with grealish and rice wanting to play for England and being English but if that was the case why were they ever brought in for underage Ireland games .., they shouldnât have even been considered . Real Irish young players who are Irish and want to represent Ireland missed out on chances because of the two of them . And rice pretending to be Irish then just made it worse ..
They are ethnically Irish.

Thatâs all well and good from Martin O Neill but when Rice was on the bench when we were 5-1 down to Denmark knowing we wouldnât have a competitive game for another year he definitely shouldâve brought him on, and Gareth Southgate has done it with players the other way playing Fikayo Tomori to make sure he didnât switch to Canada, as well as Conor Gallagher, Nathan Redmond, Callum Wilson, and James Maddison to not play for Ireland at points
I donât get you would want an Englishman playing for Ireland
Irelands obsession with blood never ceases to amaze me. Itâs like they have every persons history on a database and have an office of people scouring the earth for any smidgen of Irish heritage

Grealish and Rice were different cases. Grealish never kicked a senior ball for Ireland, and in all honesty we knew we were never going to get him. Rice on the other hand did play for the senior team, so we were tearing our hair out over O'Neill not picking him for a competitive game and nailing him down. What I take from Martin here is that he knew that if he did pick Rice he wouldn't have played, and all that would have achieved would have been to shut the door completely.

Letâs be honest footballers want to be internationals. Most English players can trace their heritage to other countries in UK and Ireland. So if they donât get an England call up theyâll go elsewhere. Simple as that. It works the other way too. Ryan Giggs played for England at youth levelâŚ.
Ryan Giggs had to. He was a schoolboy in England so he couldn't play for Wales Schoolboys.
Most?
I remember back in the day Bob Wilson - the marvellous Arsenal keeper of the 60s and early 70s - played for Scotland, and Bob is as English as they come. He hadn't a hope of breaking into the England side against the likes of Banks, Shilton and Clemence so he used his grandparents heritage to elect to qualify for Scotland.
Giggs never played for England youth he played for their schoolboys because he went to school there, he couldnât have played for England
