Behind the mask is SO UNDERRATED. Such a clever story with the cinematography to match (switching from found footage to the classic framing like a normal movie).
Session 9 is a banger, one of my all time favs
Housebound is my favourite NZ horror comedy
Love housebound!
The skeleton key is also underrated
Ooooh, good one!
Good list, I love Behind the Mask especially.
My pick would be Dead Man’s Shoes (2004), though technically more of a thriller it has some pretty brutal stuff in it that pushes it towards horror imo. On the surface it’s a revenge story and it’s good at that, but it also packs a great dramatic punch with a few poetic twists. The atmosphere is quite bleak and it feels realistic. Paddy Considine is amazing in this movie, he is truly scary and menacing, really intense stuff. This was the first movie I ever saw him in and was very surprised to learn later that he was known more as a comedic actor.
I still have never managed to finish dead man’s shoes! I’ve tried so many times! It’s so intense!
It is an intense movie indeed. To me it's mostly the stuff in the flashbacks that gets to me (to say it without spoilers), but that's also why this movie sticks with me so much.
poor The Happening, it has no friends.
Same can be said for me and many other's
@@christopherrogiero458omg ❤😂😂😂😂 yes unite
I really liked that film 😢
I have fun with it the way I have fun with Troll 2
Hahahha
Not sure if all are underrated but do not hear a lot about these, Frailty, Session 9, High Tension, Lake Mungo, Eden Lake,. A Tale of Two Sisters, and The Loved Ones. But you have a great list of a couple I have always wanted to watch but have never seen so thanks for pushing back to the forefront of this brain....
Session 9!!! 😍
I've seen Frailty repeatedly. One of my all time favorite movies of ALL-TIME! Lake Mungo and Eden Lake also totally amazing.
Behind the Mask is brilliant and should be on any horror classic list. Genre diehards know them, but stuff like Frailty, The Loved Ones, Dumplings, Pontypool, and Splinter are a bit underrated.
Behind the Mask: The Rise is Leslie Vernon - The movie where Kevin McAllister’s sister takes on a wannabe Jason Vorhees. Such an awesome movie that never greats the attention or credit it deserves. I’m still bummed it didn’t get its sequel.
I live for your lists. My gosh I remember seeing the DVD for Black Sheep as a little girl who was terrified of everything. I saw that and laughed so hard 😂
Shadow of the vampire is a epic film with an amazing cast!!
Loved it start to finish. 😍
I haven't even heard of some of these. Thanks, Spooky.
Another great list! Although you've mentioned them in other reviews, I wanted to shout out May, and Gingersnaps as some overlooked horrors of the era. I can't wait to get to Black Sheep, Sheitan and the others I didn't see yet. Thanks!
Oh my God, you are not kidding about Gingersnaps, one of the best fucking female power/sister love movies I've ever seen. Watched it over and over.
Yes! Leslie Vernon! Thank you for mentioning one of my favorites!
The full length version of Dumplings is definitely worth a watch.
I thought the Feast Series was pretty great especially the 2nd movie. It went places you would never think a Writer or Director would dare go and it was brilliant. Not sure if these are underrated but Splinter and Slither I enjoyed.
Good films all Emma. 4/5 are on my shelves. A film that a few people are starting to get now is Stuart Gordon's Dagon. I have been fascinated by the film since I first saw it. Macarena Gomez's portrayal of a strange Lovecraftian octopus deity is unusual in the history of horror. The scene in the hotel where the fish people are trying to get in is frightening in the extreme. And the final scene is haunting. Very weird. Still my vote for one of the best Lovecraft movies. Dagon! Thanks again Emma.
Yes! I gave this a rewatch after being impressed with her in the 30 Coins series. So good.
I just watched Behind the Mask for the first time back in October, and it was a lot of fun!
The one underrated horror film that I can think of that deserves much more love is The Exorcism of Emily Rose. It works good as both a horror film and a courtroom drama, and has one of my favorite horror performances by Jennifer Carpenter, who I really want to see in more stuff.
Nice list! I always loved "Shadow of the Vampire", I think it might be William Dafoe's finest role. My pick would be "Hagazussa" aka "Hagazussa: A Heathen's Curse", an Austrian /German production from 2017. This film seems to be criminally ignored. It is slowly paced and while not a lot happens in it I just felt that it just held an eerie supernatural vibe, like something dark and magical was going on.
I have just found your YT channel and I'm thankful for your reviews.
I try to watch as much sci-fi/fantasy/horror/animation as I can on a yearly basis and man - is it difficult! Especially as I don't get paid for reviews AND as I try to pack in as much non-domestic (US) IP as I can.
I've loved "Shadow of the Vampire" ever since I first saw it in the theater! And Willem Dafoe is fantastic. He has shown that same excellence in the recent "Poor Things".
Finally Sheitan mentioned somewhere! I saw it once when I was a kid and havent found it anywhere since, I would love to see it again
Good call on "Black Sheep", although I don't know if I'd call that "underrated". Underseen, maybe. The cast do some absolutely stellar work, especially the two leads. It's one of those films like "Lake Placid" where every line of dialogue is a zinger, which can be a bad thing if you do it wrong, but in this case it's done perfectly.
But does anyone rewatch Black Sheep? I don't. Should I?
@@kikiiza3379 I'd say absolutely. If ya like creature features with a touch of snark, like "Lake Placid" especially, "Black Sheep" is great.
The Devil's Backbone is often overlooked in favour of Pan's Labyrinth. Both are amazing films, but The Devil's Backbone is one of my favourite ghost films ever!
Great video as usual!
We will always support you. Keep working hard.
amazing list, gonna have to check these out!!
Im having a hard time as a creator atm. There is nothing recent coming out in Germany really (Lisa Frankennstein was the first spark of joy this year), the cpm is so low and its so cold and dark outside. Thank you for keeping the uploads coming and inspiring me to keep on uplpading 🎉
What does cpm mean?
Thanks for the Sheitan recommendation!
I had never heard of it before, but I love and own copies of the other 4 movies!
Loved this list and how unique it was! Thank you 😊❤
Behind the Mask is one of my favorite movies! So glad you mentioned it 👍
Shadow of the Vampire is one of my favorite films. It’s likely my most valuable DVD in my collection simply because it doesn’t have an American Blu ray.
Behind the mask was an incredible mockumentary. I’ve recommended it to so many people
And my favorite underrated, or rather not seen by anyone to be rated movie, is Hosts not to be confused with Host. It has one of the most insane scenes I’ve ever seen in a horror movie… and it’s a Christmas film sort of
Your critics are underrated ! Thanks again
"Surveillance"/2008/ Jennifer Lynch. David Lynch's daughter's first directorial effort...more thriller with horror elements...but a severely underrated film.
I’m so glad you added “Shadow of the Vampire”! I love that film! Fun fact: Willem Dafoe was the first (and so far only) actor to be nominated for an Oscar for playing a vampire, and the film was produced by Nicolas Cage, who also ended up playing Dracula in “Reinfield”.
I would add: Dance of the Dead (2008), The Loved Ones (2009), and Murder Party (2007).
I absolutely LOVE Behind the Mask. Can't wait to watch it again.
Your channel is amazing! Thank you for your content
You hurt my feelings with that The Happening dig. Lol
Hahaha
Good list😊
You're lists acutally always contain alot of films I haven't seen - gonna check them out
Shadow of the Vampire is one of my fave movies, it is definitely weirdly overlooked for how great it is.
As far as another suggestion.. maybe Daybreakers? It's not an amazing movie but I like it.
Three... Extremes might be the best horror anthology I've ever seen tbh
Love these suggestions. Especially Shadow of the Vampire and Dumplings. I shall be adding Sheitan to my watchlist!
Saw Three Extremes in the theatre way back when. Particularly liked the Miike Takashi segment. And speaking of Miike, his One Missed Call, Gozu and Visitor Q are worth checking out. The first is an actual horror movie; it's hard to define the latter two, but they're really twisted. Kurosawa Kiyoshi's Pulse is excellent, and Kitamura Ryohei's Versus is definitely worth checking out.
I love Black sheep! I remember laughing until I cried at the end. It's also one of the reasons I met my partner, so it will stay a favorite. I also loved Behind the mask. Both scary, smart and funny. I think I have to rewatch it soon. Thanks for reminding me!
I wish you'd have given some love to 30 Days of Night. I feel like that one went under a lot of people's radars. A good wintery horror film that came out in 2007 and one of my favorites!
I'll have to look into some of these. Here are a few more titles, a couple that might fall under the category of "Disturbing" and a couple that are probably well known to watchers of this channel, but not in the mainstream. Trouble Every Day (2001), May (2002), Dog Soldiers (2002), Sauna (2008), Calvaire (2004).
From the 2020s: GLORIOUS. The most underrated of them all!!!!!!!!!
Behind the Mask is so great! I would add to the list an Irish film called Isolation (2006). It's a really slow burn but by the end gets pretty crazy. It's really good!
Love "Behind the Mask"! Especially the shift in the 3rd act, when things get *really* real, lol.
Shutter from 2004 is another underrated gem
Ok stop the press: how have I never heard of Black Sheep?! Looks so good!
0:52 yess love black sheep (not to be confused with the Chris Farley movie)
One of my favorite underrated horror movies of the 2000s is Venom 2005 the one with Agnes Bruckner.
Three extremes best story is Dumplings.
I would go with Jack Brooks:Monster Slayer (2007). It's firmly in the comedy horror camp, but the practical effects are fantastic and it features Robert Englund.
I recommend Calvaire - a Belgian psychological horror from 2004 (not to be mistaken with Calvary with Brendan Gleeson :)) - this one really stuck with me. It's a slowburn but well worth it!
It's about a traveling singer whose van breaks down in a small town with some strange people and his attempts to leave. It's better to keep it as vague as possible.
Great picks btw, especially Sheitan :)
Black Sheep is hilarious and I can't believe so many people know it! Great choices all around.
Personal opinion : I love 2003's "May" by Lucky Mckee and I feel like it's strongly underrated. If you ever talked about Lucky Mckee on your channel I'ld love to find the video
Good list! The 2000s had a lot of great stuff. To add to a list of "underrated" films, I'd add The Call of Cthulhu. I know it's short. I know it was done on the cheap. But short of Del Toro getting to make Mountains of Madness, I consider it the best Lovecraft-vibe film I've seen in a while. I loved the silent film aesthetic and dialogue placards. Is it scary? Not really, but it's a good "spooky" film, IMO.
Shadow of the Vampire is so good.
Soul Survivors was something like a 7% on RT, but it's a 2000 or 2001 (can't remember) horror movie I genuinely enjoyed and saw multiple times. It might be worth taking a look at; even if you hate it I suspect you'll have a strong opinion at least. Most people seem to.
Shadow Of The Vampire is an absolute EPIC!!!!! Behind The Mask is also awesome :)
I love Behind the Mask! I feel the same: why doesn't this film get more love??
I enjoy watching behind the mask :the rise of Leslie Vernon movie (2006)
Sheitan I was unaware of. I need to give it a try.
There was a movie called "Creep" from 2004 (not the found footage of the same name), that I stumbled across years ago, and never hear about that I thought was pretty good.
Pontypool is far better than it's hype would indicate IMO as well.
I think I did creep for 31 days of horror!
A film that I love and I think is very underrated is Larry Fessenden's Wendigo.
The forbidden door 2009 is mega underrated. Have you seen it?
I loved behind the mask so much did you know that there is going to be a sequel to it and i'm really excited for it. I would like to suggest you cut from 2000 which is a very underrated 00's slasher that i liked a lot.
Back in the day, my mutual horror fan tattoo artist brought in his portable dvd player to my apot. So I could watch The Rise of Leslie Vernon during my appt.
Right after, I bought it and showed it to anyone.
Nice list! The only one I have not seen is Black Sheep. I am a huge Leslie Vernon fan. Too bad the kickstarter for the sequel failed its goal…
shadow of the vampire is a favorite of mine
Leslie Vernon is amazing. So underrated
Calvaire (2004) - a backwoods psychological horror movie from France. Starring French actor Laurent Lucas, who is brilliant in it. He plays a cheesy lounge singer who breaks down in the French countryside, then finds he cannot leave when the farmer who helps him out decides he wants him for his 'wife' - things descend into horror and madness. Seriously disturbing with some pitch black humour. Similar in ways to the other foreign film in your list, Sheitan. I liked that one and if you did, you'll know what you're getting yourself into. Another, also starring Laurent Lucas, but released in 2014, is Alleluia. A remake of sorts, of The Honeymoon Killers featuring a stunning awards worthy turn by Lola Duenas ( one of Pedro Almodovar's collaborators) it is a story of murder and madness with horror overtones and is well worth it. More crime thriller than horror it should have gotten way more attention.
Creep (2004) Train (2010) Kristy (2014) P2 (2007) I have to watch my list again. Got us good with The Happening joke.
I'd say these are quite underrated:
1. Nine Miles Down (2009) - Adrian Paul has to face hell, virtually unknown movie
2. Rumah Dara (Macabre) (2009) - indonesian creepfest
3. One Missed Call (2008) - mystery with Edward Burns
4. Below (2002) - submarine survival
5. Borderland (2007) - beware of Mexican w*****
6. The Uninvited (2009) - nearly perfect Hitchcock like movie
7. Hellraiser: Inferno (2000) - the only Hellraiser I really like but the others don't hah
The uninvited is a remake! The original tale of two sisters is much better imo
My picks would be Triangle, Acolytes and Queen of the Damned(!)
If you like extreme french horror films you should watch
A New Life / La Vie nouvelle from 2002
Three... Extremes is amazing
I LOVE Sheitan, it’s so quirky turns into nightmare fuel. It’s makes a great double feature with Calvaire (2004) I think
Omg Calvaire broke me!
Don't miss Three Extremes 2!! Going Home is probably my favorite horror short of all time, just watch that one.
Shadow of the Vampire is a classic, imo.
I recommend Detective Story by Takashi Miike. It’s hilarious and gory
Seen them all except Behind the Mask. That will be corrected soon. The rest are 10/10. Let me add Grace (2009) to the list.
Yes to all!
creep 2004 is one of my faves, never hear anyone talk about it.
have you seen 2009's The Revenant? It's about a dead gulf war soldier who returns to life
Yes!
How odd. I was just thinking about someone putting together this list yesterday.
I have a list for 2010 which is the same style
There's no "I" in Willem. I'm William. He's Willem Defoe. I know it's weird.
Yes I know it’s just a slip up I’ve said his name many times :)
Behind the Mask and Black Sheep are two are my favorite horredies! I have watched them more times than any sane person should have, lol.
I would add Slither (2006): James Gunn's directorial debut is just full of dark humor, great practical effects, tons of gore and body horror, and chock full of amazing actors.
Splinter (2008): a small low budget sci-fi creature feature that 90% takes place inside one location
Netherbeast Incorporated (2007): if I cant sell you on an indie low budget vampire horredy set in an office, perhaps Steve Burns aka Steve from Blues Clues being in it might?
Hatchet… love those movies but nobody ever knows what I’m talking about 🤷♀️
I laughed for a good 5 minutes over The Happening dig. It was too funny! 😂😂
i love the happening 😭
Hahaa it’s okay I love that we all have our quirks haha
I've heard of Shadow of the Vampire (2000), rest of the movies I just heard from this video.
I wish I could tag possessedbyhorror
Girl i was about to say not the Happening. Not one person needs that misery
Evil sheep? Gotta admit that one never would have occurred within the spaces of my imagination.
I feel like Cry_Wolf is underrated!
I loved everything about The Happening except Mark Wahlberg 😂
Love Black Sheep
Black Sheep--If you love Zombeavers or Slotherhouse, what happened to you when you were young?
Watch Black Sheep instead.
