Madline said the 3 films take place over 5 days with the characters and she filmed all 3 in 52 days in-between Riverdale seasons
Honestly I'm glad they didn't add a back story. The main reason The Strangers were so creepy is because we had no idea who they were and what their motive was. It is a bummer though that they pretty much just copied and pasted the original story :(
I think it’s what we’ve come to expect since the release of The Strangers: Prey at Night. Overall, I did enjoy this “reimagining” of the original plot, helping it to stay true to the movies origins. This movie was much more suspenseful than previous releases. I’m excited to see where the story goes from here, since we know we will get some changes.
"Because you were home." Hits so hard because it was random. it could have happened to anyone. That's what made it scary.
Oh it’s coming in the next movie
This really feels like they wanted to expand on the strangers, but they felt they needed to start over and set the building blocks again. Which they didn’t need to do. We could have all just rewatched the first one again 🤣
To reiterate; this is just all a set up for what they wanted to do with the next two films. That’s just my theory though.
I feel like The Strangers is a similar film to Blain Witch, in that it worked because it felt real and authentic. They are iconic because of the atmosphere and terror they imbued when they came out. I don’t think these were films that should have really had sequels.
Agree
The strangers is one of my favorite movies. Tension was built so incredibly well.
New or old?
@@praticalunar The old one. I've yet to see this one.
@@Saetun.this new one I feel is generally more suspenseful and has some pretty tense moments
I watched the first "Strangers" movie late at night on TV when I was 10 years old, and it gave me a profound fear that is unimaginable. And it also became one of my absolute favorite horror movies of all time.
I hope that director Renny Harlin will knock the new trilogy out of the park. And it has been a while since that he directed some notable and infamous horror films (e.g. "Deep Blue Sea", "A Nightmare on Elm Street 4" and "Exorcist: The Beginning").
Cheers for more horror film reviews, Emma! Keep up the great work.🤘🏻💯
I already heard this was meh. I wanna see IN A VIOLENT NATURE. It looks intense. Emma, will you guys get this at the end of the month too?
No we won’t get it, it’s just America
@@spookyastronauts I saw this Wednesday night in L.A. and you're not missing anything special. I was disappointed. Just wait for someone to put the yoga kill online this weekend and watch that.
sad, because the strangers had a known premise , but still managed to build great tension.. and was actually scary..
Why it needs to be scary? Tension its there..
The Strangers 2008 reminds me of the original Halloween of 1978.
I'm blown away knowing all three movies are already done without discovering whether or not, the audience responds well to each theatrical release.
This has got to be one of the most pointless reboots I’ve ever witnessed
Exactly
Bro skipped an entire decade of horror films.
@@thomasffrench3639 Hey I’m well aware there are countless others but this one is up there for sure
And one of the worst
Word
Now I wonder where the next two films are gonna go…
🚽
The trilogy plays out the entire night. The director came out and spoiled it lol.
Spoken like a true liberal democrat. Fake news.
@@user-zc1wf7qq6vdid he really say that? Because I saw the interview and he said that the entire trilogy happens within a couple of days, not during the same night.
Probably straight to DVD and streaming.
I dont understand why producers keep a film series going when its clearly out of steam
Money! Money! Money! 💰 🤑
The original was ok for being simple and brutal, but it didn’t have ANYTHING to sustain it for more films. There’s basically nothing built in the first film other than the sheer randomness of it, and so there’s nothing to build off of for sequels. Maybe that was part of the appeal for them: it’s just a super simple and cheap thing to make, and you can basically do almost anything with it because absolutely nothing was previously established.
I Remember Back Around 2011 There Was A Fanpage On FB Of The Strangers(2008) And We Was Demanding A Sequel So Bad. Then In 2018 It Finally Came. Point Is Back During The 2010's People Wanted The Strangers. This Could've Been A New Franchise Just Similar.
Your scores are extremely generous for this film lol. The audacity for them saying at the beginning "This is the story of one of the most brutal" and then that let down of an ending. Sheesh. So underwhelming.
Thank you for watching it for us! Will probably skip this one, but I'm excited to see how the other two of the triology go!
Yes skip it save your money, its awful
The theaters are too expensive to see a mid-ass movie. I’ll wait on this one.
Regal cinemas has value Tuesdays $5.50 it's also taco 🌮 night del taco 3 for $2
I think a big thing that helped the original over this one was Liv Tyler's character turning down the proposal in the way that we were immediately in a tense situation and the tension just gradually intensified.
Wasn’t perfect. But I liked this one.
Although it remains to be seen how the other two chapters will play out.
Its a little weird that nobody mentions the French film 'Them" (Ils) which was one of the most frightening movies I've ever seen. It came out in 2006. So 2 years before the strangers? Anyway...
Good review Emma! I always like hearing you and Cody Leach’s opinions on horror to know if it’s worth it to see it or not
I can’t wait for Cody Leach’s rant for this film. Trust me, it’s honestly awful!
Thanks for always letting us know what’s best to use our hard earned dollars on or what to wait for VOD. I had been hopeful when originally hearing about this but I had caught a trailer a few months ago and was less excited as it appeared to be a remake/reboot.
After seeing your review I feel more encouraged catching I Saw the TV Glow this evening.
Thanks for letting me know we can save money and watch it at home later. 😊
Curious to hear your thoughts on Them: The Scare
Yes! Please do a review on Them: The Scare.🙏🏻
When I see a movie with Chapter or Part. I wait for the whole saga to come out
Yes & I never watch a series until it is complete. Nothing worse than watching 2 seasons of a show then having it get cancelled 😐
They tend to be good tho because if the first sucks then the next ones won’t do very well. Kinda like Halloween when we were told there’s 3 and the first was one of the better ones 2nd one was decent and last wasn’t as good. But then there’s X, Pearl and now Maxxine X and Pearl were amazing. You can’t make 3 movies and the first one is just bad. Might not be like the OG but I’d assume it’s still a good watch
@guiilty368 Can't say I thought much of X & Pearl I didn't finish. Nothing Ti West has made has really interested me
But movies are art & art is subjective I guess
@@EddieSmith917 That is different, that doesnt imply on the title that is a series, in fact it could well be seen as stand alones.
Thank you for all the content Emma!! Thanks for all the real and raw opinions :))) I’m still gonna check it out just because the strangers really scared me as a child, and still give me the creeps knowing this could really happen to someone! I had a low expectation and your video really proved that to be true. Much love to you!
I’m giving this one a hard pass. Probably won’t even stream it, unless there’s nothing to do. I really wish they had just made the first film and left it alone. If you make a film that relies on the horror of anonymity, you can’t keep making more films without eroding that horror (by exploring backgrounds), or veering off into redundancy (as this one seemed to do). Thanks for the video!
Okay, so here's my theory: I am a professional fiction writer: My theory is this....The Strangers is not a horror franchise in the traditional sense. It is an ethos. It is an aesthetic. Like Banksy. Or Van Gogh. Many films can exist with the same three antagonists and all have the same name (or not, some will just have the masks or references to the masks) but they will each essentially be their own film, their own world. The Strangers masks and motif will be passed down in watermark alone to remind us that the only thing we truly have to fear is other people, other people who think they know something.
There is an after credits scene for a cliffhanger.
1st day 10am horror watch= true horror fan!
Found you from searching Barbarian spoiler free review and have been subbed ever since, ty for the great content!
You found the best horror reviewer on CZcams! Emma is amazing
She’s 15 hours ahead of you in Australia
The original one is on my top 10 all time favorite movies.
People saying that the characters in Prey at Night made worse decisions than the ones in the 2008 film is kinda hilarious😂
I know...Kinsey shoots Dollface point-blank with a shotgun, TWICE. That was awesome.
Liv Tyler being barefoot the entire first movie is unforgivable lol
Prey at night was better then the first one in my opinion
Christina Hendricks is a much larger woman than the blond masked woman and yet she loses to her because she literally didnt even remotely put up a fight. That was beyond lame.
I felt the same. I thought the first one was absolutely silly.
I just have to give you props for going to 10 am screenings. I do not have it it me to watch stuff that early in the morning.
Yes u do just set alarm get coffee or energy drink with breakfast
oh my god that theatre is so beautiful!
I was worried this first movie may just be a copy & paste of the original. I have my ticket booked for monday night and still looking forward to seeing it on the big screen. If this first chapter gets a bad reception, they will probably end up releasing the others straight to VOD which would be a shame. Thanks for the review Emma! It's always fun going to the cinema with you :)
It is a carbon copy.
I’d rather wait and see all 3 together. No rush for me 🤷🏻♀️ I did LOVE Prey at Night, so hopefully one of the three can match it 🤞🏻
Yeah, this one didn't really get it done, but I think a lot depends on how long you've been a horror fan.
1) I thought requiring someone to have asthma as a key plot point was over in the 90s. But here we are, making sure the inhaler is front and center at least 3 times if you include the beginning when we're introduced to it.
2) The old cabin was so creaky that the sounds made were kind of front and center at times. You couldn't even lift a butt cheek to break wind without at least three floorboards groaning.
Unless you were a Stranger. In THAT case, you move completely silently right up to people and the building doesn't make a sound.
3) The "I know I SHOULD do this as quickly as possible, but let's take another 20 seconds so something can happen that upsets that plan" trope. A LOT.
That all said, it was done fine. The performances and pretty much everything else were solid. It was just lazy, lacked creativity and as such was kind of insulting.
But that may be because I've seen hundreds of these movies. If you're a horror fan in your early 20s or generally stay away from the genre, you might find this to be very good, so I'll still give it a borderline recommend.
I WILL see the sequels. In for a penny and whatnot. But I don't expect better - just maybe some answers. They were all filmed at the same time, I believe, so there won't be any adjustments made in response to criticism. This is not really a franchise. I think they basically just broke up one large story into three films.
OR ... maybe the director knew this was an option and simply shot one film as long as he wanted, realized he could break it up into 3 parts and just wrote a few transitions to tidy things up.
Take care.
Great review 😊
Noted, I was considering going this weekend but maybe I'll wait for streaming
Thank you, you have sold this viewing for me. I know how to walk into this one.
The trailer appeared to just be an “updated” version of the original and your review seems to confirm that. Which is such a bizarre choice as it’s just a movie about isolated people being attacked by…strangers. I did not like prey at night but at least they varied the location and tried something new. This feels wildly unnecessary, and it’s only the first of 3!!
Have you seen the Coffee Table (2022)? A disturbing film you might enjoy.
Such a crazy movie!
@@tamarindsoleyn9856 Not what you expect and impossible to forget!
Always love your Videos, Emma ☺️
does it have any quality about it is it watchable
I like the way you say mobile home park, you make it sound so classy lol.
Good review and cool video Emma!👉🙂👈
A big part of what made The Strangers special is the atmosphere; the story itself is simple. That has everything to do with the talent of the director, Bryan Bertino - look at The Dark and the Wicked & The Monster for example, and you'll see they have the same formula; simple premise, uneasy atmosphere. Unfortunately Renny Harlin hasn't made anything close to as eerie as Bertino's work gets, and no matter how much fleshing of the backstory he's going to milk is going to succeed in doing so
Yup! Totally agree. It was all the cliches. He has asthma and drops his inhaler, she puts her hand on a nail, they go to use the motorcycle and it blows up. I was very frustrated. I love the two lead actors but the plot was the same as the original only like u said just all worse. The fact that they only stab them once each at the end was weird too. I woulda liked to see him use that axe this time!
I'll save my money for Longlegs.
I thought these were more marketed as a remake trilogy
Thanks for your review. I'll wait for streaming.
I really loved this one and can't wait to see the rest of the trilogy. I was always a fan of The Strangers and the original terrified me when i first watched it as I watched alone in the dark 3 o'clock at night, so this was so crazy to see in the cinema as a fan.
I'm convinced the sequel will be a vague retelling of Prey at Night with Petsches character showing up to save the teens and explain the backstory of the strangers
Curiosity killed the cat... but satisfaction brought it back!
Seeing it tonight by myself! No one I really know loves horror the way I do and The Strangers is my second fav horror movie oat behind Halloween. I can’t imagine this being terrible since they’ve made 2 others already
Madeline Petsch moving from escaping Riverdale to being terrorized by The Strangers with this trilogy!
Emma about to rob a bank 😂😂 thanks for the great review 🎉🎉
So the long & short of it.
It's definitely a movie that happened in 2024🤣
It certainly feels like most of the greater movies this year, are coming to theaters in July. Have you seen the movie list? It's stacked! With 2 possible horror classics, fingers crossed!
Maxxxine & LongLegs 😱
I got an ad for this movie on this video… oh the irony
Emma i absolutely love your page🎸🫶🏽
The first movie is one of my favorite horror movies from the 2000s, specially because of the ending... The second one is good, and this new one got me excited and now I'm even more intrigued ... is it that bad?! we'll see.
The original movie is one of my favourite horrors so I caught this yesterday and the teenagers in the cinema were talking about how “it didn’t make sense” and they “didn’t understand it” tell me you haven’t seen the source material without telling me😅😂
Thanks for the review, Emma. I guess my prequel theory will not pan out since this film is just a modern reboot. I was thinking that Baghead would be a parent to the other Strangers and if the parent didn't survive, then one of the kids would become the new Baghead.
The 2008 one will always be my favourite. I still watch it with one light on
I had so much hype on this film by the trailer just looked as the same as the old one that's what I was worried about
Dude how do you not burn yourself out watching so many movies 😩😩😩
I haven't watched the video yet, starting it now. Just wanted to say it's funny to me how many people hate the first strangers movie...I dk why but it's one of the only movies that actually scared me in probably 20 years. The whole "because you were home" thing was so realistic and terrifying. But I am definitely nervous about this reboot
Wait, this isn't a prequel? I don't even understand why a studio would even want a re-imagining of The Strangers to begin with.
Giving this only 2 points below Talk to Me feels like a crime
Cheryl Blossom from Riverdale?
Yup!
Yep..lol
I skipped it and just watching your and also Sarah’s review 😂 it sounds like the movie is exactly what I worried it would be. I’ll probably watch it on streaming eventually. The other horror I’m worried about this year is the speak no evil remake🥴
I would love to see you do a video about good movies that were ruined by disturbing endings
Just came home from seeing it. I don't know why all the bag reviews I personally loved it.
Madline also said it's a re telling not a prequel and then a journey with characters in the next two films
The Strangers PAN is a funny one... reviews weren't good, but every horror fan I know likes it.
I will go See The Strangers Chapter 1 Tomorrow and Does it have Good Character Development and how good is the Post Credit Scene and does the movie have a good Pacing
Your theory has me excited!!!!!!!!! I watched the OG last week to prep lol
My buddy at work asked me about this movie yesterday, and I said “It’s the original movie if the characters sustained severe brain damage beforehand.”
Loved the first one and the second half of the next one! Two tonally different movies, tho. I hope they can find something in the story that they can expand on to make it new.... my excitement is dialed in at a hard 5, tho😂
I really liked it
Im still excited to watch this because it have been a while since slasher hit the big screen, the last time was Thanksgiving during last November.I hope i enjoy this one since i enjoy the 2018 one (i dont know where to watch the original tho)
If you're in America or have a VPN it's on Max
Hey, since you already saw the entire movie at the end, I was curious about this and wanted to know by asking you about who are the three actors who played Man in the Mask, Dollface and Pin-Up Girl in the movie. according to the credits?
I don’t think you’re meant to know.
There are other horror movie reviewers but no one does the "come with me" like you, Emma. I love these videos and you look cute with that cap on. The only time I ever saw you look cuter was when you wore glasses - but I guess that was one time only. Anyway, I have to say I was never going to go see this one. The first one was just too hard on my nerves. I found myself hoping the couple would be saved and so angry when everything they tried failed. I can't go through all that again.
I can't wait for this review. The 2nd film, I went to theater and literally a walked out I was so mad 😆
I watched it on Thursday and went in with the same mindset of it being a prequel.. As much as I wanted to give it a fair chance, I noticed it was trying too damn hard to be a modern version of the original. I kinda checked out mid way which sucks :/ but I'm excited to see where they take us for the next 2.
I was so excited for this movie, I'm bummed it's not giving anything new and original to the franchise -yet-.
Part 1 is definitely a standalone but supposedly acting as a prequel from what I read a while ago. I think they are all stand alone that's a part of the original movie continuity. I MIGHT watch this.
This was really good! Yes, it has similarities to the original, but there are enough creative differences to make it stand on its own. A healthy dose of suspense and tension runs throughout the film. Renny Harlin has done a great job, and I am excited for chapter 2! There are too many negative reviews comparing it to the original. People should try and avoid this and just go and enjoy it for what it is. Do not be put off by the bad reviews. Go see it and make up your own mind! It's a solid start to the trilogy! 💯👍🏻😎💜
I like Strangers Prey at Night as well! It's the kind of horror film I love. Yeah I'm weary about this prequel. For me it takes away the scary aspect of the first one and kinda ruins it....but hey I'm not one to talk cuz I haven't seen this one!
Edit: okay retelling:p thats what I think it is since the trailer did the same "cuz you're here" line. Which sent shivers the first time I ever heard it back in 2008. In the new one it just made me roll my eyes.
What is the music in the background? It's not really background music but I like it.
This little slasher reboot is getting way too much hate online... it's a fun little cabin in the woods movie... I will watch any horror film with Madelaine Petsch she is a gorgeous final girl
I heard this was a prequel but then I saw the characters in a Airbnb on the trailer and I was so confused, you just confirmed it makes no sense to be a prequel, would love to know why they are announcing as one
I think I'm going to pass on this for now, but if Chapters 2 and 3 turn out to be interesting, I'll plan on streaming the trilogy at some point.
Nothing to do with this movie lol but have you ever watched 'Mysterious skin' staring Joseph Gordon-Levitt? I accidentally watched it years ago on CZcams and it's always stuck with me, though i was probably too young to be watching it, so maybe it wasn't as bad I remember it being ha would be interesting to see what a horror lover thinks of it
I am guessing the Strangers are three of the people the couple meet at the diner.
I've heard chapter 2 will be a prequel
I bet they will move the next 2 chapters to vod or streaming
I love Emma
Just saw the new one. I gotta say that I loved it and it’s very similar to the original. I loved how tense it was and sets it up perfectly for the next two films. I also noticed the strangers always left one survivor in all the films. I highly recommend seeing the new one!
In 'prey at night' they didnt "leave" someone alive. The strangers were all taken out.
@@MarioBario I’m talking about the victims of the strangers haha and apparently in the alternate ending of prey at night the masked man is alive
I think it'd be so to tie it back to the original film with the 3rd chapter. Like most sequels I don't think any movie's gonna beat the original, and the mid credits scene was actually an homage to the ending of the 2nd film.
Come with me and you’ll be in a world of pure imagination
As per usual, well done! I love love love your insightfulness!
