When you watch all the deleted stuff and the movie you get a much better view of all the characters especially the humans. Selfridge you find out is a good guy. He was sent there as a corporate manager really nothing more, he's constantly fighting to keep the military from attacking the Na'vi. He basically set up the Avatar program so humans could communicate with the Na'vi and he's been saying to them the whole time, "hey humanity is coming, they are coming soon, you need to move I can only hold the military and extreme corporate interest back so long. He tries to keep the Marines from attacking a final time but the Marines stage a coup and he's basically removed and kept under watch. quartrinch himself is explained as basically having ptsd. HIs first couple of months possible years, he was reasonable and decent, but so many of his guys kept getting fucked up on missions of peace he finally loses it, he also so really fucked up war back on earth and was kind of sent to pandora as decent place to be stationed and it turned out to be a total hellhole. Then on earth you've got a giant fucked up wars over energy which went bad so everyone is desperate for any kind of power source on earth and other planets that humanity has taken.
It would have at least made the movie less black and white. One of the biggest and most reasonable complaints lodged against this movie is that it is so incredibly one sided in favor of the Navi in it's finished form. All the humans except for a handful of scientist and one pilot are depicted as complete assholes in this movie that was released. The Navi are shown to be at one with nature and living the pure life connected to their world. There is no gray area, no shading and it makes for a visually beautiful movie but very flat one dimensional storytelling with very strong political overtones. Overall Selfridge isn't a good guy. He's a guy in over his head, and over his level of understanding but he's no hero or even an antihero. Quartrinch is a product of a lifetime of military indoctrination bad PTSD and the macho culture that is built around male virility. He was the wrong man for the position and he was ill suited to handle the role assigned to him. But that doesn't him a good guy an anti hero or misunderstood. It makes him a bit more sympathetic and less one dimensional but he is still the villain of this story. The Navi simply didn't want anything that the humans could offer in exchange for what they had that the humans wanted. They had no incentive to trade and nothing the humans had was of value to them. But that doesn't mean that they weren't at constant war with each other, that they weren't susceptible to disease and untimely death and that there weren't Navi who took their war against the humans too far to the detriment of their own people. A lot of the deleted scenes and backstory would have made this story more real and 3 dimensional but it doesn't change the overall arc of the story or eventual outcome.
@@ashleighelizabeth5916 Exactly, Navi were glorified so much that they came off as mary sue types. None of their actions were questioned
@@kidinsomnia1373 In the director's cut the navi at one point ambush a squad of marines (before the tree attack), they burned the walker pilots alive in their suits.
He's not a good guy at all. He's not a genocidal nutjob like Quartrinch but he's still 100% onboard with stripmining that planet for every resource it has regardless of it's effect on the people of that planet and regardless of the OWNERSHIP CLAIMS THE INDIGENOUS SENTIENT SPECIES HAS on the planet.
Last time I checked, the "convert to the white man's way or else" treatment of native americans is still considered genocide, just like the "only good injun is a dead injun" treatment, just not as implicitly violent.
@@ashleighelizabeth5916 To be fair it is possible James Cameron didn't want it to be less black and white, he wanted a specific view pushed on this subject. One doesn't have to like it but in the end it is his, and anyone else who had that final creative control, call on it.
It does look like the movie started with more of a grey view point on things though trying to balance things out, and made it as far as being filmed as these scenes show. It would be interesting to hear why James Cameron went the direction he finally did.
The way in which Jake talks to Parker really tells us that his loyalties have changed.
Also I like how Selfridge believed he needed an armed security detail whilst he was INSIDE the Hell's Gate security perimeter to play golf. 😁

I swear to you they'll either laugh at you and keep walking cuz you're a nobody or they're gonna make you their girlfriend, their bitch.

@@barathrum3107 He's trolling
that rain coming in and Selfridge having an umbrella while Jake and Grace don't is really good symbolism. in film rain is shown to cleanse things or the characters it touches, usually in the case of someone being dirty, but in this context it show's Selfridge's resolve to listen to what his company tells him to do as opposed to giving the Na'vi more time, and the rain touching Jake and Grace shows their clear conscience and their connection Pandora and respect for its people
I would love to see this movie with all the unfinished scenes. The continuity would be far better but it might be four hours long... the original theater release had holes that didn't convey the potential conflict: It didn't make sense why the colonel was so motivated attack the home tree. While the colony is isolated in time his actions would surely have resulted in a Senate investigation "back home". Oliver North didn't get out unscathed.
The humans of course had an ultimate way of dealing with the "indigenous" population: Evacuate to orbit and use the transport to drop a few tons of rock debris at 1% of light speed. The energy release would sterilize the planet.
Another problem with Avatar was that they deliberately left out a key concept, something which was later written into an in-universe style book on Pandora. Humans originally went to Pandora not to harvest unobtanium, but to gather collect plants that feed on chemicals poisonous to Earth plants. Why? To remedy pollution. Humans didn't go as conquerors, but were asking for help, and the Na'vi refused, kinda violently. Unobtanium was discovered later.
"4 hour avatar movie"
I see no problem here
Same, some of the deleted scenes make the movie flow better IMO. I think they can be completed. James Cameron probably has all the motion capture data and audio tracks backed up. And since they are using the same tech for the sequels, they can render the old footage and release some sort of director's cut down the line.

And I would assume that he the administrator because he is trusted by the company to make the correct call without waiting 10 years for a response from earth.

If you think of it, Parker Selfridge had the most stress because he is the leader of RDA's operations on Pandora. His morality is often downgraded by his commitment to the company he works for which stresses him out. It is why he keeps justifying that they need to take down the "savage" Na'vi to retrieve Unobtanium. For a wealthy guy, Parker spent most of his RDA life on Pandora since Day 1 and there is no record of him swapping places with another RDA administrator. Parker likely knew he would never return to Earth yet stayed on Pandora. Also, he had to handle complaints from the scientists, Avatar Program members, and RDA mercenaries regarding things on Pandora such as the Na'vi. I kept wondering if he is actually greedy because money is worthless on Pandora and I never see records of him actually returning to Earth. It is unlikely he has a family on Earth. Parker is selfish but a different kind of selfish in my opinion. What Parker means by "out of time" is that the RDA Board of Directors is threatening that if Parker does not mine the Unobtanium immediately, he might be replaced by someone more ruthless than he is and they will use full military force on all the Na'vi. It is kind of hard to understand Selfridge if we don't know the ruthlessness of the RDA Board of Directors and its CEO.
Lol, and where exactly would you “see records of him returning to earth”? This is a fictional story, not a matter of searchable public record. Why do even say that “there is no record of him swapping with another RDA administrator”? Just making stuff up?
oh damn they did send someone way more ruthless that Selfridge in the form of the Female General in the Way of Water.
Parker is basically the ultimate yes man
Honestly movie companies should start being more open to the idea of making 3hr movies or even longer bc sometimes they need it to be longer to tell the story in the best way possible and they wouldnt have so many deleted scenes
Movies over three hours cannot be showed as often per day and as a consequence sell less tickets.
There’s a great clip of James Cameron saying that the studio execs gave him feedback on the flying scene. They said it was way too long without a narrative purpose. He told them too bad, because he wants to see it and other people would too. Being absorbed by the experience *IS* the purpose. Cameron was certainly proven correct with the success of Avatar. Once again, execs being creatively ignorant.

These scenes really show how sad of a character Jake is, he's not an idealist, in fact his outlook on life is quite dark, cause he knows when push comes to shove, nothing him or Grace do will be able to stop what's coming... You can see in these scenes how much he's struggling with himself over how helpless he actually is

All these deleted scenes which really flesh out the storyline make me just think the Producers or whoever was in charge didn't want a film that had people in their seats for over three hours.

I wished this movie would have just been about the humans using Avatars to learn about the Navi, rather than all the destruction. The best parts of the movie IMO was when Jake was learning how to be a Navi and their culture. I'm ex military and dont need sad reminders of what war does to people. But still, my favourite movie
But then it just wouldn't be dramatic enough
I watched Avatar many times in theater not because of the action - some strange nostalgia looking at the world that he has created and the Navi too...
Same here. The first half of the movie is my favorite. Once they start bulldozing the trees where jake and neytiri mated it goes down a little in quality
No. That would be boring
Well I think it was like this because that's the message irl that's what happened during colonist, it shouldn't have died people but it did thanks to our ancestors so through this movie we had to consider the decisions they made so we don't make the same mistakes again.
The worst part of this scene is how it shows how the Na'vi have hit a societal and evolutionary dead end. Dr. Augustine says that this tribe of the Na'vi have been living in Hometree since before Human history began. That's over 6000 years. They haven't moved from bows and arrows, an invention that man created in the Paleolithic period, 70,000 years ago. Riding animals like humans did 6000 years ago. They are living in tribal communities and while yes, they share a symbiotic relationship with Pandora, this hinders their development since Eywa; Pandora's sentience, keeps the Na'vi from developing.
the evolution in Pandora was not needed, same as amazons and aboriginal tribes on earth, humans in the movie evolved their tech but face extinction because they drained Earth. Evolving tech doesnt allways mean good

We need AVATAR 5-7 Hour Cut, I'm happy to pay for it 👌
0:52- I never knew Selfridge was a science wiz! Maybe he could have joined Grace's Scientific research division🤣
Time to say something controversial but lets try to look at this not only from the human's perspective but the Corporation's perspective. As cool as it is/was to have the scientist using the avatar program as a way of learning and studying the environment of Pandora, that was NEVER the intent of the Avatar Program. The Avatar Program was just a way for the Corporation to develop a relationship with the Navi tribes. In a sense, misusing corporate property by in a sense using it to learn Pandora's ecosystem. In this case, it was mostly about trying to get them to leave. Now, they knew, from the BEGINNING, they were never gonna leave their home. Lets face it, no one would if they had a connection like that.
HOWEVER, the issue is rather than telling that to CEO they chose to neglect to tell them anything and delay the Corporation's operations for what seems to be at the very least a few months. This in a sense wasted time, money, and possibly lives. And now, she had the audacity to go up and tell the CEO to wish to extend more time, which really wasn't to continue negotiations but moreso to ensure they keep their lands, neglecting the job that they were sent to do in the first place.
One could make the argument of moving to another location. However, as was stated in the film where they were sitting in was unfortunately the richest deposit of minerals within 200 clicks, or roughly 120 miles, from where they were. That in itself is already far away. Anywhere else would either be a net loss or be too far out, further endangering the crew. I mean in the beginning of the film the trucks were attacked and burned, likely traveling from shorter distances. So you can imagine what would happen if they had to build a mine lets say 200 miles away.
I like how the Na'Vi have apparently lived in that tree since before humans existed and yet they're thousands of years behind us in terms of how advanced they are. They're still primitive.
I guess the entire planet seemingly being a deadly jungle may have had something to do with that but still.
Apparantly the planet keeps a “balance” with everything so connected, which... gets kind of creepy the more you think about it. What if some native tribe started to grow in numbers and influence, threatened the balance, and the planet brain just launched an all out attack with animals to keep them in check? She did it when the humans were actually trying to kill her, who can say if she hasnt done that before to stem any change?
It took humans over 100,000 years until the first early civilizations started to rise, so in this case, its not that far off. They're basically in the stone age.

Humanity could not solve their issues on earth so the best bet is to leave and find a new home

Selfridge is a lot more reasonable than Quaritsch. He doesn't seek out conflict, instead striving towards the diplomatic approach. The "I'm sorry dr. "They have lived there since before human history began"
Well, apparently with that lifestyle they could not progress one bit. Look at human, evolved and travelled interstellar while they were living under a tree
To be fair, this is just one place on the planet. We really don't get a look of how other places look like. Maybe on the other side there is some version of Navi greece chilling around.
I've heard this said before as well, but one of the fun little details that helps balance the film was that little tidbit: "It's been their ancestral home since before human history began"
Although the Na'vi have a deep spiritual connection, they're _horribly_ under developed. They've had all this time, and they're living in trees, eating fruit, fighting little wars. The humans here are always presented as the "bad guys", but at the end of the film, the "bad guys" all leave and return to explore the infinite cosmos, while the na'vi live in the dirt, waiting for a good plague to wipe them all out.
Their biological need for scientific progress might not as great as ours. Or their evolutionary process favored the stronger bodied/willed than the more intellectual.
whatever the case, they lived happy lives with what they had. Ignorant to the mysteries of the universe. And the planet rewarded them kindly.
You can say that makes them stupid blue monkeys, but they're not polluting shit or destroying other people's home for their thirst of ambition.
@@paulstaker8861 Not sure the planet “rewarded them kindly”. They have seriously dangerous predators to deal with, some they are not really able to kill without great risk to themselves, and lets be honest, their medical situation isnt the best. The planet keeps a balance, sure, but it also clearly impedes progress. If what Agustine says here is true, that means that the Navi had been living like this for *millenia* without any hint of progress.
I mean, even the Native American and African tribes our great grandfathers encountered had advanced to some measurable degrees in the thousands of years they lived in their respective lands, with both Africa and America having had actual empires that spanned for miles, but the Navi have never even had that idea occur to them.
That may work for them if they were the only sentient species in the universe, but they arent.
Seems to even border on suicide, as *unlike* human tribes when faced with technologically superior forces, they actively refuse to incorporate any bit of foreign technology, most Jake seemed to manage was teaching them proper weak points for their ballista sized arrows to do more damage, and even then, that battle was won when the entire planet launched an assault.
Gonna have to side with the humans here, too much progress can be a bad thing, but the opposite isnt exactly the better option.
@@dfmrcv862 The planet did reward them kindly. They lived relatively peaceful lives in harmony with the predatory creatures. They even tamed some (banshees).
And their tech did advance over time (tools, weapons, clothes, musical instrument, ride harnesses, furniture, etc.). They advance at a slower rate, and perhaps already peaked since they don't feel the need for any more progress in this field. They are content and comfortable with their tech level.
Similar to the native american tribes, they did spread to different parts of the planet and formed tribes with unique attributes like shown in the movie (Omaticaya's a musical tribe, there's a banshee tribe and "horse" tribe, and perhaps more).
@@dfmrcv862 Avatar 1 shows the very first armed conflict between the navi and the humans. They had no time to familiarize themselves or even acquire human tech to help them. The most that could be utilized was Trudy's "chopper" and Jake's human-made weapons, and they did utilize those.
I think from Avatar 2 and onwards, we may see the Navi adopting human combat tech as they're expected to face a returning human force larger than in Avatar 1.
@@paulstaker8861 Yeah... “relatively peaceful” doesnt really mean much if walking around the grass can get you eaten alive by a pack of six legged wolves, and while content and comfortable is a factor, but keep in mind that it was only because their goddess told them that. Take the example of the different tribes and notice how none are really what anyone would call a fully established nation. You would think there would be some level of higher coordination with each other if they all worshipped the same god that actively speaks to them... and yet they remain separate.
What worries me is the implications, as if Eywa would cull any tribe that got a bit too powerful or too advanced. I mean, think about it, a whole world connected to a sentient being, yet all they do is sit around in trees even when a threat large enough to destroy them shows up?
And I dont think we will see Avatars with human tech in the sequel. They were very clearly against manmade weapons, tools, vehicles... anything because it wasnt connected to Eywa. I think they mostly made the exception with Jake because they needed them then. Maybe Ill eat my words later, but it doesnt seem in character for them.
Even James Cameron can't predict how the future would be like. I am totally okay with it. I know it's a movie, but, the dressing style and everything is basically the same. It's the year 2154, and I would expect absolute change in technology. Jake is still shown using a pen drive. In just 20 years, storage devices have transformed so much. We use Pen Drives, not fancy looking Floppy Disks. How come they're still using Pen Drives in the 22nd century? Also, there's not much change in helicopter designs.
Again, no issues here. Just pointing out.
From what I've heard, it's explained that 'these models are sturdy and trusted and we can't create something new for a random planet we're attacking' or something. Might be good to look up.
0:38 If the movie was made in 1995.
I find it hard to believe that the Na’vi have been living in Hometree for 10000 years, else they would have been as advanced as humanity.
Not if they choose to not eat their apple of eden. Ewya kept them in the Stone Age.
@@Rainbowhawk1993 that’s a negative?
@@benyseus6325 It’s not a negative or positive. It’s just the way they are.
Not how it works. Look up the Sentinelese, they've been around for just as long as any other human yet never had technology beyond the Stone Age.
@@klikssiikubra314 because their island is small as dirt?? Completely different case. You are literally comparing a small moon to an island the size of a golf course
Why the hell is he playing golf there? It could have hit someone in the head or eye or damage equipment 🤦
Why THE HELL ISN'T THERE AN EXTENDED CUT AVAILABLE?!?
Before human history? With genetic memory like that they should be thousands of years more advanced than us. Pathetic.
Advancement comes from a need to change. They have no need to advance as voraciously as us.
They have aerial and terrestrial mounts, so no need for cars or other vehicles.
Trees which store their memories like bio-computers so no need for high tech PCs.
Plants which glow at night so no need for unnatural lighting.
And lets not forget Eywa, the collective consciousness of every plant and animal of Pandora. If the Na'vi attempted to industrialise, Eywa would send a wave of animals to wipe them out.
Why advance when their society is clearly flourishing and sustainable where they are?
They didn’t need to evolve they’re doing fine lmao
@@gabbyjunie8842 Sure they are.
WHY IS IT OUT??????
well it was pretty weak tbh...
the humans are just the generic bad guys so the more time you spend with them the worse the movie is.....
@@suchalad the humans are the good guys
Como se nota que no editaron la.escena jajajaaj
lol just noticed their masks aren't attached to the actors properly, every time they talk you can see the air gaps open up on their cheeks, they'd be dead if they really where on pandora

I have a question. How many scenes were deleted from the Avatar movie?
28 or more
@@everythingwillbe6904 Thanks
estimated 45 minutes
Oh thank god..didn't ready 'deleted scene' ^_^. I was like .. my god the CG is horrible :|
soddo glorify a traitor.
And this is one of the reasons why I say that humans aren’t the “evil species” as they’re depicted as in the full film. If they had a choice, they would’ve given them a few more months if possible
If humans were not an evil species, they would have never started the mining operation at all.
@@danhalo1 what? So you expect us to stay confined to our little planet? Constantly draining it of resources and some of which cannot be replenished? We’re not evil, we need resources to continue to expand, for more people to live, for society to flourish and for humanity to grow beyond the confines of its planet and solar system. It’s not evil to want to expand, explore, study and gain new technology, knowledge, homes and resources
@@ImperialHell172 the way they were doing it in the movie was against the wishes of the people of the moon. You speak of innocent and harmless exploration. That is not what happened in Avatar.
@@Casocki I said to someone else that if Grace designated the sacred sites as no go zones, the RDA would’ve avoided them. But no, Jake decided to get between an aliens legs and screw everything up. And how else do you expect to get those resources? Resources the blue monkeys don’t need or use
@@ImperialHell172 there is a deleted scene where it turns out. They knew of the sacred sites. And they intentionaly bulldozed the site so the Omaticaya will retaliate and frame them as inititating first blood.
As for the resource part. RDA suppresed all other alternatives and research via legal means and hiring terrorists so the only thing humanity will rely and focus on is unobtanium and have all the greens they want. Its in the wiki if you dont believe me.
We actually got a very important information here. That Na’vi is a way older race than humans! Yet they still value and respect their faune and flora
That is in an alternate timeline if Jake Sully never joined the Na’vi

tbh I never thought Selfridge was that evil just an annoying CEO running a business, but this scene shows his evil side much more, mainly the point he states it doesn't matter when it is done (just the sooner the better) and they ask for a couple weeks which he denies. That shows his evil greed so much more saying that he doesn't even have a deadline he just wants it done no matter who dies.
Anyone reading my comment, listen to Bioluminscense of the Night.
You'll thank me later 👍
Are the navi really that old? Seems kinda ridiculous they lived that long without any extreme advancement
Probably because Eywa gave them what they wanted and as a result they didn’t have a need to make advances in technology to survive better.
I can see why this scene was cut, it didn't add anything to the movie.
