    I love this scene. Its so dark. But this level of confidence and craftsmanship hasnt been seen on screen in a long time. I hate that Cameron cut this scene and refuses to put it back.
    This one scene puts all of the recent movies by Nolan, Scorsese and Tarantino to shame. I love that this scene doesnt have any of Camerons patented blue-lighting tropes. Its magnificently made with raw and real lighting. All of the critics who trashed Cameron for his moonlighted or starlit nighttime scenes can suck a lemon

    It’s truly a shame the Oscars don’t recognize motion capture performances because Zoe is absolutely sublime in this role. You feel the rage, the wonder, the innocence, the sadness, etc so strongly through her performance. She fucking kills it. Best motion capture performance ever after Andy Serkis as Gollum imo.

      quaritch didnt kill neteyam though, it was lyle, and also quaritch is horrible and probably didn’t care for neteyam, only then did his morals change because spider was his son, or perhaps he knew what he was doing was wrong and knew neytiri was the good one here, saying “youre a warrior” as in shes the hero who is suddenly as corrupted as the villain, him.

    • @sahd8565
      @sahd8565 Před 14 dny

      @@motherkool Yes, Quaritch didn’t directly kill Neteyam, but he still was responsible for his death to a high degree💀we’ve seen before how Quaritch has no empathy for the Na’vi in the first film and still in the second one. Especially for Na’vi children. He literally tried to kill Kiri, Lo’ak, Tuk, and even Tsireya.
      Honestly, Quaritch is a hypocrite cause he didn’t care if Jake and Neytiri’s kids got killed or hurt and when one did actually get killed.
      But suddenly he’s like, “no wait you can’t hurt a boy, fight me instead like a warrior.” Like the Sully children weren’t children themselves and even younger than Spider. His morals didn’t “change” because even after Neytiri let’s Spider go, he threatens Jake with if he doesn’t fight him then he’ll keep coming from his family, implicating he’ll do anything, probably kill another Sully kid, just to get back a Jake.
      Quaritch isn’t a good guy, maybe he’ll turn a new leaf in the upcoming movies but he ain’t changed in 10 years even after becoming a completely different species.
      Him saying that to Neytiri honestly has no real affect cause he’s no different, so just a big hypocrite.
      And it’s not right for Neytiri to threaten Spider, but her list of bad deeds is nothing compared to Quaritch.

    After watching the scene for the first time, I was speechless. I kept asking why? Why did they cut the extended bit out? Neytiri violently stabbing the soldiers multiple times I understand as that would have likely increased the rating to MA15+ or a very high M. But the clip where Neytiri doesn't release Spider? No. They should have kept it in. It added so much to the characters. I hope if they make an extended edition of the film, the clip where Spider remains a hostage is kept in.

    What's funny is that even when I first saw the film, I had this odd feeling that the pacing of the whole third act in the theatrical release felt off. I couldn't put my finger on it, but knowing how Jim Cameron films are paced, I had this innate sense that it seemed like it was pulling its punches. Like the edges had been filed down, the corners were rounded off, and the pacing was just skipping around too rapidly and not letting the action really play out.
    It feels like we got the contemporary PG-13 version of 1990s Jim rather than the R version of 1980s Jim. But we know he's still capable of that kind of brutal intensity, because they went through the effort of producing and animating this whole sequence only to neuter it. This is as big a loss as the whole sequence at the end of the first film where they find Tsu'tey mortally wounded in the jungle.
    And it was only after seeing this original sequence that I realized those suspicions about it being nerfed weren't just my imagination. Even shots that seem very similar to the theatrical release were toned down despite not being gratuitously gory. Everything has a more intense impact, to say nothing of the extended drama with Neytiri which was an alarming and essential piece of character development.
    This was a disservice not just to the great technical execution that a lot of people worked hard to choreograph and animate, but also to the story, because it seems like a really big element of her character arc. This sequence is the REAL canon.
    It's a shame this wasn't in the movie, not just for the sake of wanton violence, but to demonstrate that Neytiri isn't going to just be a pushover and let the RDA mercs continue to play dirty. This is same group responsible not just for killing her firstborn son, but also her father Eytukan, her sister Sylwanin, and her ikran Seze.
    I think it would be more surprising if she WASN'T a raving psychopath on a war path just like Sarah Connor after the events of the first Terminator film. If Neytiri wasn't unhinged before, I wouldn't blame her at all for being unhinged in the following films considering she's lost half of her immediate family to this blood feud.
    Also reminds me of Luke Skywalker in Return of the Jedi, who struggled with a darkness that he tried hard to contain, but he snapped and went lunatic when pushed beyond the breaking point.
    We have this impression that the Na'vi have a code of honor, even with regard to violence, but they're as capable of wavering between light and dark as anyone else, and it's important for the audience to see that there are aspects of Neytiri's personality that you haven't seen before and didn't think she was capable of.

  • @bluehourforthegaysandtheys3007

    Everybody wonders about Spider's and Neytiri's relationship evolution in the next movies, but very few people know that in the comics (yes, there are Avatar comic books) Neytiri straight up spit all of her rage onto him for everything bad the humans did. Look it up. I don't know what all of this means for their future, knowing that jake adopted him at the end of this one, but I know that if they wanna make this work, a lot of work is going to be needed, yes by the both of them, but especially by Neytiri (as one of the adults, the matriarch of the Sully family and the one with I think the most amount of ptsd, of the both of them at least). Idk we'll see, but I loved this extended scene, Zoe's performance was really believable, it brilliantly came thru, and I think it was a wise choice to show a feminine figure with the most amount of rage or attitude and let Jake be the mediator, and with all the focus that was put on the other tribe and the children, it was a brilliant way to highlight the parents' role in the story. Also, to all those who ever said her rage was too much, maybe worry about what your reaction says about how YOU see women and feminine people in society, all of that talk of women HAVING to be calm, gentle, preferably more sad than angry, and when they end up being rightfully angry or full of rage, calling it hysteria. That's sexism right there. I saw a comment of someone saying that she lost her older sister Sylwanin (which a lot of y'all don't know about her existence of her love for T'sutey, also in the comics), her father, her Ikran, her firstborn son, her hometree, her forest when they fled, and she almost lost Jake thru this whole thing. And she also witnessed another clan suffer the wrath of the humans, killing tulkuns and an elu. She is responding as accordingly as someone who lost a lot through colonisers and the destruction they bring. And I agree with this comment if you couldn't figure it out.

    • @ZeroUs30
      @ZeroUs30 Před 15 dny +4

      I agree, it’s sad though how she takes all her anger on Spider for something other humans did, especially in the comics. A lot of ppl hated spider in the movie and sided with Neytiri even saying she should’ve slit his throat in the standoff. And calling him filthy traitor for saving quaritch, while it was a bad decision, I don’t blame him for doing it since his whole childhood he was treated as an outcast by Neytiri which made his friendship with the sullys much more difficult and overall making him feel like he doesn’t belong, she straight up bullied him his entire life.
      Then quaritch who first of all is his actual father, treated him better than Neytiri ever did.
      It was wrong to save quaritch and it will have consequences, but from spiders perspective I understand why he did it.

    I have a headcanon that you could find interesting. I imagine Vergil Sparda from Devil may Cry game series was Quaritch's father (which explains a look about him) with Spider being Vergil's grandson. If he was in this scene he would standback and let fate decide. Vergil would get why Spider spared Quaritch but that does mean he approved of it. He let Nero bleedout so he would be fine to let Quaritch drown. People speculate on what would happen when they everyone find out that Spider saved Quartich. I don't think Jake would hate him Spider. He understands Spider more than most due to them being human. Neytiri would want Spider to go away but I predict Spider would say something like: "I glad to go. YOU never loved my cuz you SEE me as a monster, a thing. Jake loves me to pieces, unconditionally. Why can't you? My mother was killed by Na'vi but I forgave. I still needed a mother. You said you want me to among my kind - They don't even want me. I disown Quartich and you still aren't satisfied. I'm a monster but you worse than a monster. Your a hypocrite."
