Sooo, I work for a woollen mill. We manufacture sheep’s wool, acrylic, polyester, nylon and cotton yarn products, and each one has a different manufacturing method. The plastics generally need an alkaline environment to accept dyes, natural materials need acid and both need to be heated to sub-boiling temps. You know what the hilarious part is? Those bottles are made of the wrong type of plastic to allow for that kind of dying. Tack on the fact that his dyeing process is heavily flawed, and on top of that I have a knitting machine just like the one he’s used. It can’t knit two types of knits like what you see on the finished product, and the only way it knits that neatly is by using waste yarn lest it curls at the start and end. The knitted product isn’t a single type of knit, either. As for that blue dye, again, completely wrong method of dyeing. I’m more angry at this shit than I have any right to be, but doing this on an industrial scale I know you can’t dye polyethylene like that. We can’t even dye it at my joint because of the separate processes required for it, and homeboy mix up some acrylic paint in baby blue and called a day.

Chemical changes are very definitive and it's actually quite hard to recycle and fake content like this helps people think plastic isn't a problem as long as they recycle it when that's very incorrect.

No the takeaway is that it is indeed just this easy to recycle. They simply choose not to do it because it's more expensive and it's just cheaper to make new plastic instead. Also there is a negative sentiment towards recycled plastic so demand is less for that when compared to new plastic. Companies have been marketing themselves by talking about the greatness of recycling while hardly doing it but that doesn't mean it can't be done.

We don't need plastic solutions as much as we need less plastic products produced. You just created microplastic by blending it. You're going to track that outside from your shoes, or it's going to blow away outside ruining the environment farther. The best thing for the environment is to stop plastic production for things that will be trash after purchase (like bottles), and instead collect our stupid mistake of plastic waste and landfill it all in one location so it breaks down away from both human and wildlife populations. Creating more microplastics by needing to wash your product or to tear up your materials doesn't help the environment.
Yes, we need less plastic being produced. And this comes with tradeoffs, for sure - such as microplastics. But you're not going to wake up in a perfect world with little plastic production tomorrow. So in the meantime, this shows that we can at least reuse the plastic to create thread. And that has many useful applications. And the world would be better off if more of the plastic were recycled towards such applications.

You people know that molten plastic usually turns black. Not perfectly white. Also the impurities we've seen this guy put in the plastic(labels, etc) can't result in white plastic. This guy just showed himself cutting up some plastic, making actually cotton candy and then spinning some wool/cotton into yarn, which he used to make a cap.

While this is only one of many ways we’re creating micro plastics it’s a huge source. We really need to stop or limit the types of clothing that can be made of plastic. Would love to pen a store that offers services like this. You could bring in your plastic bottles and have them processed into various items. Almost like Build-A-Bear but for sustainable clothing and recycling. Think of all the homeless people who could benefit from this, as many of them collect bottles and cans to recycle for money. The store could offer full recycling trade ins, or you could choose to have your bottles processed into new clothes or reusable bags and even shoes and socks. You would need employees to handle the machines and the dyeing and processing of materials and such but within just a few hours people could walk out with new recycled, sustainable items. All of the scraps could go to making asphalt, building materials, and/or being outsourced to places that could completely recycle the scraps or other sustainable companies could use the scraps and extras to research new ways to use them. It would literally be recycling ♻️ the company as well. Just food for thought.

There was a company that went to my home country with the same idea except they made shower curtains. They cleaned up all of ur coast lines and islands. Our planet is far from clean but this is a great start to an amazing solution!
Thing about recycling is that youd have to turn the recycled product into something that wont be discarded again, if you keep recycling plastic the fibers that hold it together become smaller and smaller until you cant do much with it, think of it like taking a string and breaking it, then tying it back together hundreds of times, eventually you've just got a mess of ugly knots that wont tie very well. So basically recycling works, just not the way we wish it would.
@@TheAlgorath and it can be used to make asphalt or concrete too. I’m sure there’s many other ways to melt it into newer plastics or materials. Big companies are more concerned with making fast money instead of making money and keeping the planet cleaner.
Either way it's absolutely worth doing especially the rate our technology is evolving. I bet in the next 10 years we'll have found even more ways to fix that issue. The main thing we need is replication and popularization of these methods all over the world at a somewhat affordable price. This process looks incredibly simple and could have a very high production rate.

I was also thinking just the same thing. I don't know if he wears a respirator when chopping it up into that crumble, but breathing in that dust is very harmful to the body. Also yes, wearing that hat can't be good for your health without it being treated properly through a chemical treatment. It's the heating element at the bottom of the spinning part. It melts the plastic bits and flings them out into string and they dry once in string form.
Unfortunately this is a heavily edited version of the process. The melted plastic should end up black and the fibers wouldn't be at yarn like for the knitting without heavy chemicals. This is more of an artistic interpretation/ depiction of what to expect.
Candy floss spinners don't work like that. Plastic is by far the worst material to put into a machine like that since it's meant to make sugar into strings like that. Plastic isn't as easily degradable via heat like sugar is though, and it would cause a mess of dust and vapors to possibly kill whoever is doing it
How do you think baby diapers, sanitary pads and cigarette butts are made? Same process but using extruder and high temperature jets. Polyester fabric, Same process

The process shown is not safe for the person doing it or whoever wears the thermally and mechanically distressed thermoplastic fragments releasing inhalable microplastics. Yes, polyester fibers can be made from PET too, and arguably neither are safe in the long run. Nonbiodegradable plastics should be phased out.

Instead of that, If humans regulate their usage of plastic then it will be more helpful for the the environment. We can use reusable glass bottles, but no ! we need mobility in everything. We want to grab coke and drink it while walking on the beach and we have freedom to throw it everywhere. Keep doing it because global warming increasing. God made beautiful creations and man made distractive creations. So Sad!!
It’s not really original. Rayon is essentially plastic just virgin not usually made from recycled bottles.

This is recycling, which is good, but all it's doing is delaying the pollution. Every time this gets washed it'll shed microplastics.
Just offsetting the inevitable.. doesn't break down, just smaller bits.. still plastic.

Would love to pen a store that offers services like this. You could bring in your plastic bottles and have them processed into various items. Almost like Build-A-Bear but for sustainable clothing and recycling. Think of all the homeless people who could benefit from this, as many of them collect bottles and cans to recycle for money. The store could offer full recycling trade ins, or you could choose to have your bottles processed into new clothes or reusable bags and even shoes and socks. You would need employees to handle the machines and the dyeing and processing of materials and such but within just a few hours people could walk out with new recycled, sustainable items. All of the scraps could go to making asphalt, building materials, and/or being outsourced to places that could completely recycle the scraps or other sustainable companies could use the scraps and extras to research new ways to use them. It would literally be recycling ♻️ the company as well. Just food for thought.

There was a company that went to my home country with the same idea except they made shower curtains. They cleaned up all of ur coast lines and islands. Our planet is far from clean but this is a great start to an amazing solution!

Thing about recycling is that youd have to turn the recycled product into something that wont be discarded again, if you keep recycling plastic the fibers that hold it together become smaller and smaller until you cant do much with it, think of it like taking a string and breaking it, then tying it back together hundreds of times, eventually you've just got a mess of ugly knots that wont tie very well. So basically recycling works, just not the way we wish it would.
At that point the plasticizer is fully depleted and it will compost in the same time as a log.
@@TheAlgorath and it can be used to make asphalt or concrete too. I’m sure there’s many other ways to melt it into newer plastics or materials. Big companies are more concerned with making fast money instead of making money and keeping the planet cleaner.
Either way it's absolutely worth doing especially the rate our technology is evolving. I bet in the next 10 years we'll have found even more ways to fix that issue. The main thing we need is replication and popularization of these methods all over the world at a somewhat affordable price. This process looks incredibly simple and could have a very high production rate.

Unfortunately this is a heavily edited version of the process.
The melted plastic should end up black and the fibers wouldn't be at yarn like for the knitting without heavy chemicals.
This is more of an artistic interpretation/ depiction of what to expect.
Candy floss spinners don't work like that. Plastic is by far the worst material to put into a machine like that since it's meant to make sugar into strings like that. Plastic isn't as easily degradable via heat like sugar is though, and it would cause a mess of dust and vapors to possibly kill whoever is doing it

This is definitely real. Do you know what cheap wigs are made out of? Just in case you don't know they are made out of plastic. Like the ones you get at the Halloween store. That machine you see that turns it into a cotton candy like material heats the plastic up and melts it forming the plastic material into thin strands that he uses to make the beanies

The process shown is not safe for the person doing it or whoever wears the thermally and mechanically distressed thermoplastic fragments releasing inhalable microplastics.
Yes, polyester fibers can be made from PET too, and arguably neither are safe in the long run.
