The rule is you wait until they leave the store then call the police. That way a crime has actually been committed. Also, it's for safety reasons. You never know if they have a weapon and your life isn't worth the merchandise. Plus companies want to avoid any potential lawsuit.

When my oldest daughter was 5 she stole a pack of gum from Dollar Tree, back when everything was actually $1. I caught her with it and she fessed up to taking it right away. So we calmly got back into the car and went right back to the store. She had to apologize to the clerk for stealing, pay for the gum (which she didn't have money for so I reminded her that this is coming out of the family grocery budget), and give the clerk the opened pack of gum back. Everyone who saw this in the store was very greatful for how I handled it. I told the clerk to either throw it away or give it to a kid who came in next. My daughter is 13 now and still remembers having to do that. She has never stollen anything since and told me it was a good lesson learned.
My brother used to manage a clothing store for big and tall men. His stores used to be hit by theft, usually shoplifting; however, corporate policy stated that if merchandise got stolen, the goal is recovery, meaning if the perp got caught with it, the store where the items were stolen from got it back regardless of condition. Otherwise, insurance would cover the loss. But when cities decided to increase the minimum loss to $1,000.00 in a bid to reduce arrests, it only encouraged folks to steal even more since the cities' DA's refuse to prosecute thefts valued less than $1,000.00, which affects insurance claims and premiums (both go up), which affects businesses.

I went with them and they said that I was the first person in a suit they had picked up.when they realised I was a chill person we had a few laughs. Working department store retail decades ago, our security team stopped and prosecuted shoplifters, but these days seems that they get away with it because stores don't want to be sued for harassment or possible thief injury... or for any injury to their own employees who try to stop the thefts.
As a kid if someone would of told me that about the whole "sitting too close to me" I would of 100% laughed, scooted closer and called him out. I was a real handful as a kid.
We should get the right to stop people from sealing without getting fired for it. Everyone I know who’s stopped a costumer from doing something wrong was fired. My bf was fired for kicking a guy out of the dispensary for grabbing my bf on the collar and not having ID. He was fired within 30 mins
If someone is shoplifting, as an employee you shouldn't engage with them, instead call your manager and he will get the security footage to the police and police would track the suspect down and arrest them. That's the process.
Sorry hun, not gonna confront a guy twice my size for taking something i can't afford that the company will use as a taxes write-off and is already insured against theft.
If they're aren't strict on the policy, it would only lead to tolerance and allow more and more people to try stopping robbers. The more people interfere, the more people get hurt. I get that it goes against people morals, but it's ALWAYS better to just let them go. I work at a gas station and we see people steal like every other week. No one has gone unpunished yet. They've all been caught on video and have been given a no-tresspass. Even under the slight chance they never get caught, it's not worth risking your safety over $100 the company with remake in the next 5 minutes.
Here is why it is a store policy for big chains and department stores not to stop them. It is all insured and they claim that more was stolen than actually was and get paid twice on that falsely claimed merchandise.
I used to have a friend who worked in a store like this. He literally had to watch this happen all the time. They steal shit usually small in fit in pocket stuff, comeback a few days later say they ‘lost the receipt’, get a refund for in-store credit, go online and sell the store credit for cash at like 2/3 the value. I believe it was the furniture store pier1
This is 100% true retail workers aren’t allowed to touch them and people get pissed but truth be told is our pay is the same regardless Literally, we don’t get paid enough to deal with that crap
I did Loss Prevention for Target for 4 years and we stopped shoplifter. We detain them till PD showed up. We caught someone stealing about 3 to 4 thousands dollars worth of merchandise.
And it’s a good thing store policies are not to stop shop lifters. Report it sure, but that company doesn’t pay you enough to do anything about shop lifters. Also your medical bills if you get injured stopping a shop lifter is WAYYY more than the value of whatever goods are being stolen.
This was a “beyond scared straight” tactic this show used. Blue bloods, everyone was in on making this kid stop stealing when they got the call. Dude in the cell works with the DA and wanted to help.
I used to work for a major fast food chain. Standard policy was if you get robbed, be quiet and give them what they want. I'm glad we were never robbed because I would have been fired the next day.
Was having a conversation with one of our AP (asset protection / basically store security) while working at the service desk at the retail store I currently work at. My coworker asks the AP "hey, what are we supposed to do if we're ever robbed?" I replied "Give them the money" (Admittedly, I was being sort of glib, but I also knew the answer) My coworker gave me such a deer-in-the-headlights look and goes: "SERRIOUSLY!??" Our AP just nodded and agreed with me and basically said "your life is much more important than that drawer (of money)"

America is weird. In my country, shoplifters will be dogpiled by not only the employees, but fellow customers as well. These comment section just proved my point.
Well, in America, intervening could cost you your life. Not sure where you're from but most Americans who work retail understand that we don't get paid to be security. It’s sadly a true thing, I’m a cashier, and we can’t stop anyone from shoplifting, they say it’s for “our protection” but in reality it’s so they can avoid liability when/if it ever happens and it has happened many times
of course its to avoid liability. i’m so confused why so many people in these comment WANT to be a liability for their job. do you really want to risk your life for ur job? like i just don’t get the logic here i dont understand why you people feel so inclined to being a hero for product that you do not own. what makes you think for a second that its worth it? did someone tell you that you’d be getting extra money for it? i mean its just the dumbest thing ever man you need to really love yourself more. your life is more important than every atom that is inside of that store. ACT LIKE IT.
When I worked in customer service we were told if somebody was shoplifting or whatever is that we never approached them because the merchandise is replaceable and we're not and it was the same thing if we were ever robbed that we were told not to engage just give the person that was robbing us the money from the tills and only take glances at them for descriptions
I know it's just a show/movie. But im curious, is there really anything like that in the USA where shop policy tells the staff to not do anything against shoplifters? And if so, whats the reasoning behind that? Never heard of such thing from where I'm from (Europe).
Yes, its due to the high probability of retaliation against the shop lifters or robbers. They don't want employees to get injured or killed trying to stop them. Especially connivence stores where anybody can have a motive.
I think it’s similar in Germany. In supermarkets they also just silently call the cops and wait. Everything is on camera so they rather track them down later than have the employees get in a fight over a bit of change
Yes, in some places due to the safety of staff & other customers. It’s happening a lot with places like CVS, LONGS & other drug stores. There’s video on CZcams showing it happening & nothing being done. Thieves come with suitcases & trash bags, fill them & walk out.
At the store I work at, if someone is stealing while checking out then all we do is point out the item like “oh what’s happening with those clothes” or “you’ve got a case on the bottom of your cart” who’d usually gets the person to make a choice. Otherwise if they’re stealing and we don’t catch it immediately, if they start walking away their isn’t much we do. Just take a copy of the receipt, and give a time and description to security and they deal with it from there. We aren’t paid enough to care if someone steals a few items from the store that makes thousands of dollars a day for a company that makes millions in a day from all their different locations and branches
For all the comments talking about the old guy, it's actually just one of the cops friends or whatever helping to make this kid snap out of shoplifting

The rule is you wait until they leave the store then call the police. That way a crime has actually been committed. Also, it's for safety reasons. You never know if they have a weapon and your life isn't worth the merchandise. Plus companies want to avoid any potential lawsuit.
No way it's worse than San Francisco or New York City. Any liberal city is heaven for criminals.

My parents let them do it. And I have never been back so well done to the police officer that took me in! And my mother and father for seeing the value in it
At the time your 17 yr old self probably was pissed off your parents didn't come pick you up immediately, however now I can see your adult self appreciates the valued lesson you had to learn.❤
That’s some good parenting right there, unfortunately a lot of parents don’t let their kids face the consequences of their actions
Very good parenting.
It's almost like illustrating to kids that there can be very real, very scary consequences helps them become better adults.
How did we drift so far from this as a society? 😂
At 17 maybe, but the question the episode simple ignores outright is who had custodial responsibility for this child? He's clearly to young to be unaccompanied. Is he truant or are the parents not provided sufficient supervision?

When my oldest daughter was 5 she stole a pack of gum from Dollar Tree, back when everything was actually $1. I caught her with it and she fessed up to taking it right away. So we calmly got back into the car and went right back to the store. She had to apologize to the clerk for stealing, pay for the gum (which she didn't have money for so I reminded her that this is coming out of the family grocery budget), and give the clerk the opened pack of gum back. Everyone who saw this in the store was very greatful for how I handled it. I told the clerk to either throw it away or give it to a kid who came in next. This is so aesthetically pleasing!

We should get the right to stop people from sealing without getting fired for it. Everyone I know who’s stopped a costumer from doing something wrong was fired. My bf was fired for kicking a guy out of the dispensary for grabbing my bf on the collar and not having ID. He was fired within 30 mins
So u want the right to be shot by a thief ain’t that something 🤣America truly is the land of the free
If someone is shoplifting, as an employee you shouldn't engage with them, instead call your manager and he will get the security footage to the police and police would track the suspect down and arrest them. That's the process.
@@Ying-yang6969🤣
Yeah cause every shoplifter I see looks just like that kid. Very accurate.
Except taller.
And they enjoy KFC
You're tough until you meet a real tough guy! 😂😂😂
Wait what? 😂
Stay safe pls
The “seriously” is exactly how I felt at my first retail job 😂
Its always the district attorney or a precinct cop lol. Nathan Fillian pulled that trick once 😂
The kid is right. NY is now having this same trouble. No one is really arrested for stealing.

I had a hunch he did.
And it’s a good thing store policies are not to stop shop lifters. Report it sure, but that company doesn’t pay you enough to do anything about shop lifters. Also your medical bills if you get injured stopping a shop lifter is WAYYY more than the value of whatever goods are being stolen.
The guy on the bench understood the assignment.
I like Blue Bloods! This is a very good lesson for young man who does not understand the umbrella that he seems to be standing under.

My coworker asks the AP "hey, what are we supposed to do if we're ever robbed?"
I replied "Give them the money"
(Admittedly, I was being sort of glib, but I also knew the answer)
My coworker gave me such a deer-in-the-headlights look and goes: "SERRIOUSLY!??"
Our AP just nodded and agreed with me and basically said "your life is much more important than that drawer (of money)"

Why is that sad. You really want to put your safety on the line for a few shop items
Americans are so stupid they are willing to be hurt protecting a big corporation.
of course its to avoid liability. i’m so confused why so many people in these comment WANT to be a liability for their job. do you really want to risk your life for ur job? like i just don’t get the logic here i dont understand why you people feel so inclined to being a hero for product that you do not own. what makes you think for a second that its worth it? did someone tell you that you’d be getting extra money for it? i mean its just the dumbest thing ever man you need to really love yourself more. your life is more important than every atom that is inside of that store. ACT LIKE IT.

Great story!

Also, these stores have insurance policy that pays for all the losses caused by shoplifting.
Yes it’s true. !!! U can’t touch them or put hands or even confront them cuz it can turn physical
Yes, in some places due to the safety of staff & other customers. It’s happening a lot with places like CVS, LONGS & other drug stores. There’s video on CZcams showing it happening & nothing being done. Thieves come with suitcases & trash bags, fill them & walk out.
USA, where paying for the medical expenses of your injured employees trying to stop shoplifters is a greater loss than being robbed
The video production is great
I love how even the criminal knows his role in scaring the kid.
Except that wasn’t a criminal. It was a DA investigator posing as a criminal
Sounds like y’all the reason we gotta ask for detergents
That’s how these kids act in school. They get caught they don’t care. Nobody is scared of a cop. They need a dad in the house.
For all the comments talking about the old guy, it's actually just one of the cops friends or whatever helping to make this kid snap out of shoplifting
