Avatar Deleted Scene 17 - Dream Hunt

- The most popular deleted scene. The overlong sequence to say Destiny Calls. Also: "You know how they don't have a word for "lie"? They had to learn it from us."
I'm sorry but... did you have to put it so bluntly to get the message across that Humanity sucks balls?
Edit: Had to trim the first minute due to Copyright.

I swear, 90% of the deleted scenes would’ve improved the understanding of the plot SO MUCH.
yea but the movie would of been like 9 hours long lol
@@smileyr not really, probably only 45-60
Lol the plot is so easy to understand already. You must be pretty stupid if you can't understand
no, really, this scene in particular is so powerful cuz all of it makes so much more sense to me now
@@ikeynislove Yea, truly. This scene is damn powerful and somewhat sad too. It makes me feel horrible to see Jake suffer like that. Turning around, screaming, while his spirit goes on a journey.
"they don't even have a word for lie, they had to learn it from us" this hit different
I'm glad they deleted that. It's just so implausible.
It doesnt make any sence. Even animals understand the concept of lying. 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
It's a nice sentiment for the Na'vi considering how the ecosystem of Pandora is so in tune with each other and all serve the whole rather than the individual, but I also don't think it's plausible. I feel like it'd be a fairly universal concept. It's probably the only line I'd cut from this scene.
too cheesy and makes this otherwise intricate and detailed world seem less real Even kids lie just for fun and it seemed they have been having fun with Jake in other scene, when he pretended to not notice them and then scared them. He was pretending to be scary for fun. Just that alone 'pretending' is basically soft lying. They were obviously familiar with behaviour (again, obviously) why not have a word for it? xP
Yes... Yes it does
This scene actually shows the level of conflict that Jake is undergoing within himself. The final version did show that Jake was conflicted about his loyalties, but this scene shows the depth of Jake's suffering
it absolutely adds to the depth and layers of Sully as a character also it really highlights just how tragic the situation he's in. if he sides with his own people he goesback home to earth has his spine repaired get's his legs and also his life back but that world just isn't home anymore his life with Neytiri and the Navi was now what he wanted.
i do hope that when the 2nd film releases we get a James cameron cut of the first film and this scene gets added back in. not every scene gets restored just the ones that add so much more needed depth and shades of grey to the movie.
i am so glad tho that JC himself did say that every deleted Scene is Canon and did happen in the story.
Leave this in the extended cut
They should make a show about this honestly. Bc there’s so many thing they had that gives more background details that cannot fit in the movie since it’ll make it too long.
@Izzy just because it wasn't I clouded doesn't mean it didn't happen! I like to think it's canon
@@IllumiusSnyder’s Justice League would like a word.
6:44 I think it's very interesting that the beginning of Jake's vision is very similar to what Kiri described as "feeling Eywa's heartbeat everywhere", and that's why Jake immediately understood when she told him about it. Kiri has a special connection to Eywa so she must have the ability to sense this exact same thing all the time without using psychedelics or a ritual.
It also seemed odd that Jake would gain the favor of Eywa and the Na'vi by forcibly taming Toruk. This scene would have made it seem like Eywa herself actually chose and allowed him to become Toruk Makto rather than him self proclaiming.
@@pandorabox5532 I know some people reckon the scene where Toruk attacks is supposed to show Toruk choosing Jake, because the Ikran choose their Na'Vi rider by trying to kill them - I think in the scene (might be wrong here) we only ever see Toruk snapping at Jake and his Ikran rather than Neytiri. Either way, if that was the intention it wasn't well communicated.
@@hotsoup1339well, it IS a deleted scene, so things were probably changed in the final cut
@@hotsoup1339 Right, I had never thought about it that way. I think the implications of that scene were pretty vague.
It would also make more sense why she had a seizure while connecting directly to Eywa because if she can already feel her so strongly spiritually without the ritual or tree than things like connecting to the tree would be very overpowering and overstimulating is how I see it now.

The character depth of Grace is simply amazing. She knew that Jake was being controlled by Quaritch, yet she gave him a chance, as she knew that he would change and turn a new leaf. She even realized that Jake had changed for the better.
Yeah, first time I watched this I was surprised that she and Norm didn't seem mad at him for it. And Grace's reaction indeed shows character growth considering what she normally thinks of the RDA and its grunts.

They need to seriously do another cut of the movie containing the majority of the deleted scenes. A lot of movies have deleted scenes that make you go "oh, I totally get why they would cut that", but here they're so fucking great and add so much more depth to the story. I guess it just came down to runtime. But goddamn, we need a new cut. Start a fucking campaign.
It would be cool if the remastered version of Avatar coming to theaters in September had the good deleted scenes fully rendered and implemented into an ultimate cut of the movie.
@@Rainbowhawk1993
Yeah. But then they should at least make 1 pause inbetween in cinemas.
James Cameron talked (in a conversation between him and Denis Villeneuve) about the possibility to release both a Cinema-version and an extended (6 hour long) Cut- Version at the same time for the sequels.
Like with the competition between streaming and theatrical release right now, they could release a 2 and a half long theatrical version and a 6 hour long one on a streaming platform
It would be very expensive. James Cameron’s would have to shell out money out his own pockets for it, but I think at the least he could’ve broke even if he did. Imagine 4 Hour 3D Avatar All Deleted Scenes, plus 4K HDR Grading Remastered and Sound Remastered followed by a 3 minute scene of Avatar 2. That’s a hell of a rerelease.
@@jayb.2649 they did it for lord of the rings, there’s definitely a market for it. I’m just finding these now and binging 😢
James Cameron likes to make 5-hour movies and then cut them down to 2.5 hours; worked for Terminator and Titanic, but then here he tried to squeeze in too many tech demo and world-building scenes at the same time and it doesn't really work. If they'd screened the Special Edition and kept this and maybe #22 (Selfridge confronting Quaritch), Avatar'd've gotten all the Oscars and zero petty sniping about the story.

SAME. You can see his heartbreak because, at that point, Grace is right. He is on limited time, in a borrowed body - he can't truly be with her. Yet, he's willing to keep borrowing time. It breaks my heart every time.
I think this scene would have been somewhat important in the film's storyline, because Neytiri said earlier "There has been a sign!" and Jake much later said "You chose me for something"... I think that the "sign" was that Jake had became without his or anybody's knowledge Eywa's pawn, and that the vision was Jake's destiny and the very reason why Eywa had chosen him.
I think the sign she meant was that glowing thingy sitting on her arrow when she wanted to shoot him
@@rapliberationarmy089 yes, also, it is clear in the final film that Jake was sort of the chosen one, as Eywa listened to his prayers and sent help to the battle against the military
@@rapliberationarmy089 The glowing thing is a woodsprite - it stopped Neytiri from killing Jake because he was foretold to become Toruk Makto. This vision quest scene is the pivotal part of that plot. It's where Jake fully becomes part of the Navi and realises his true destiny. The "sign" lead to this scene - they are linked, that's the point.
there are two signs from Eywa that Neytiri saw. First - when spirit stops her from shooting Jake first time she meets him, by sitting at her arrow pointed at him. Then, when she doesnt want him to come after her, the spirits sit on him, making her change his mind about him and invinting him to the village. Yes. Those signs are sole reason of why she invites Jake into Navi Tribe.
@@kptmaci4979 there’s also an argument to be made that Eywa was communing/calling to Jake before he ever arrived on Pandora. The opening shot of the film has Jake describing these dreams of flying through the Pandoran jungle when he was in the VA hospital.
To all which don’t know what’s going on then I’ll explain.
To be one of them, you’ll have to success the Uniltaron (Dreamhunt)
It’s a very important spiritual ceremony to the Omarikaya-clan.
There is a individual travel and a common event.
The common event is what we see here, it starts with the person which wants to join are being brought to a holy place by the clan members.
The person are going to take too psychoactive poisons, eating a glowing worm from the tree and getting a sting from the Arachnoide (scorpion).
As the sting hits , you get massive pain and you’re nearly dying. While the body’s in pain you’re slowly dividing into “dreaming”
If the person survives the traumatic experience, the person shall report about the details of the vision. Which thinks could contain prophetic wisdom of Eywa.
A part of rebirth as adult, the vision gets re-enacted and celebrated by the community with food and dance.
I hope you somehow understood this, I am after all translating from my book.😂
What is the book? I want to read too. Are there comic books? I can't find any.
what book?
What I don’t understand is, does it happen to all adult Navi or only an outsider who wants to join the clan?
@@Flower-ce8yf
The book is called (Avatar the ultimate guide)
@@MrSharkSaver50The ceremony is for the younger Navi’s to join the ranks of the adults in the clan. I think the reason Jake has to do it too, is because he just joined the clan so yes both.
I think there was some important dialog here. One thing that always bothered me about the movie was how Jake revealed his true purpose to the tribe and Netiri. It just seems as his character arced, he would not have dropped a huge bomb like that at that moment and this deleted scene shows his struggle with that secret.
true.. I was always wondering why he kept it for so long to finally say it.. basically say it when it was too late and not sooner.. like.. maybe week or two sooner, or more? Or soon after he became one of them. But he kept prolonging it.. it felt strange, but now makes so much sense.. that was some really powerful scene in the beginning, imo.
I would've loved to see this fully rendered
Another lovely detail about this scene is the fact that Grace helps him with his legs when he's getting ready to drive his avatar, something which he did not accept at first given his pride. It had been years since I've watched this movie, and though I remembered it for the awe-inspiring visuals the story didn't exactly come across as a fully realized epic. However, there are so many little details included in the deleted scenes that make it a better movie in all regards. Grace's relationship with her students, Neytiri's sister, Jake's inner conflict (which in the theatrical cut was dealt with in a hurry), Norm's initial jealousy, and a million things about Na'vi culture that just add to the experience. I hope that in the next movie, James Cameron can incorporate a full storyline without trying to make a crowd-pleasing edit. Audiences should not get bored that easily, especially when all these tiny details make for a memorable plot and film.
I was waiting for someone to say this!
I completely agree. I'm on the team that would watch an 8 hour cut if he did one without getting bored. This whole world is amazing.
The thing about Avatar is that the overarching plot is sort of thin, predictable, cliche, but there's so much in the details, the world-building, the character development.
I love how in these deleted scenes, you can hear bits of Sam Worthington's australian accent where he didn't get the american one quite right and they havent dubbed over it yet cause it didnt get produced to final cut
Yet I think this here is his better acting, delivering it unfiltered and unrestrained, while he sounds stiff in the final "American" version. People always complain about him being a block of wood in this film, while I hope his acting for the upcoming sequels would be exponentially improved. One, I think they'll allow him to play his Australian accent more feely, like maybe it'll be his new Na'vi accent after integrating over 10+ years with them. And Two, for his hard experience once he got put into the Hollywood spotlight, fell down after flops, and picking himself back up again in recent years.
You can here his native accent throughout the movie too.
2:10 he goes from australian to southern american lol
I think it would have been so cool if he got to keep his Australian accent for this, he might have been less stiff in the beginning.
Honestly I can’t imagine anyone else in the role but Sam
@@WreckingWood I don't understand why Jake had to be American in the first place. Can't they make him Australian and justify it with a logical reason? Like he grew up in Australia but had to move to the US because of reasons? (Maybe Australia has become a mess in the 22nd century and his family flew, idk) it would only give more depth to his character
I love how much loyalty Norm has that he just continues to start up the machinery and when Jake tells them the truth he doesn’t get angry at him
The lighting used on Jake making half his face blue. Intentional symbolism, he's caught between worlds.
The magic trip was too much for the audiences.
Let's hope the next 2 Avatar films will be more brave to show it !

I disagree I think this would’ve been one of the most coolest scenes. Cmon people love drugs, psychedelics, dimension shit like that. Anyways I can see this being used in one of the sequels for one of the Sully kids or maybe Quatrich if he turns into a good guy. It’s wasn’t just triply it was horrific the way James Horner did the music very eerie.
Bro what, why would they cut this? It adds so my depth to Grace and Jake's character. Forget runtime the people wants more stuff like this!!!
this could have been Doctor Strange levels of trippy and awesome. but for now it’s just nightmare fuel.
It’s a shame that this scene didn’t make the final cut. I think it is the perfect context and reason behind jake even considering to make the bond with the toruk makto. This scene infatuates the struggle inside jake, the realness of eywa and its connection to everything.
I feel that shows more about grace than we expected, she put a wall between her and Pandora because she knew she's dependent of the technology to be there so she never truly connected with Eywa and the na'vi afraid of being separated again.
My favorite takeaway form this scene is grace helping his legs into the pod when previously he didn’t want her help to show their conflicting missions.
Watching these deleted videos, I realize that the most important parts of the story where Jake turns from spy to joining the Navi, his explorations of Pandora, his change of mind, his conflicts during his change of mind, are all cut out from the movie. Obviously, the world of Pandora cannot be explored in one movie. Hopefully the 3 sequels will go all in. I hope at least this deleted scene is fully rendered and released on CZcams in HD.
It's here we're he sees but doesn't realize it's his destiny to be Toruk Makto. Only through that can he regain some trust and lead the omatikcaya
as a lover of anything na’vi or pandora related, this scene absolutely should’ve been in the final cut. dream hunt is such a big part of their culture because every na’vi has to go through the ceremony to be seen as an adult in the tribe. it’s literally a rite of passage for them. what’s even more upsetting is the fact that james cameron really wanted to add this because he knew it was important. even then they still didn’t add it because it was predicted viewers would be more interested in scenery and battle scenes.
Every Na'vi? I thought it was only hunters/warriors?
@@mybalcony4066 all na’vi go through uniltaron, it’s a right of passage for them to seek their spirit animal from eywa. this is known as a na’vi’s “second birth” which is where they earn their place among the people. i hope that made sense:)
This scene shows Jake’s desire to want to become a man. Not just a man, but truly a good man. It lines up with Jake’s narration at the beginning where he talks about why he became a marine.
This scene adds so much depth. The irony and the worse on worse decisions to be made. It shows the things jake has to go through.
I want James Cameron to return to this movie and fill in all the cgi blanks. I want the ultimate cut. These things take time, of course. I'll be patient.
I kinda wished they had kept this scene in the actual film, makes it much more better with this scene included. Plus some of his visions are also prophetic signs of what is to come later in the film. For example:
1.) His encounter with the _Toruk_ banshee; later he becomes _Toruk Macto_ (Rider of Last Shadow), and leads all the Navi clans to battle and defeat the Sky People.
2.) The ash-filled decimated forest, an omen of what might become of Pandora's forestry if the Sky People actually manages to succeed in defeating the Na'vi (which thankfully they don't).
Actually the decimated forest becomes a reality after the humans bomb out Hometree.

They should finish the deleted scenes and add them back in. It adds so much depth and understanding about these characters.
Im sobbing over this being taken from the final version
These deleted scenes destroyed jake, norm, and grace
Also the part at 7:10 where we see his astral projection get into a meditative stance then it cuts back to reality (him writhing on the floor in agony) is incredibly powerful.
this scene is something else. Imagine being high watching this. Must be the trip of your life
This scene clearly shows that he was destined to be Toruk Makto, and it was Eywa herself who chose him, and not just his hubris as it can be (and is) interpreted by others in the final cut.
I get wanting to cut yet another trial for Jake, but the opening stuff with Grace is pretty good. Sigourney Weaver is so good, it's a shame to lose any scenes with her.
The world was not yet ready to see something like this in 2009, with psychedelics being criminalized and all the puritanical stigma we have around psychedelics. Imagine if they had included this scene in the highest grossing movie of all time.

It's said that the Dream Hunt is supposed to make a na'vi find their spirit animal. Jake's shown was Toruk, the last shadow, who he used later to fight against the humans. Very smart
I know this scene is popular, but it's actually an ingenious cut, especially with Jake revealing to Grace and Norm that Quaritch sent him. In every fully rendered cut of the movie, there's never any reason to believe the two of them have any idea about what the reason they're out there is. Jake giving information to Quaritch seems pretty on the record with them; only the Na'vi learning about it is a real reveal. Dramatically, this changes precisely nothing and its removal takes 9 minutes off the runtime. Kinda brilliant, really.
Max saw Jake providing intel to the colonel right before the avatar team moved to the mountains. That was the sole reason they moved.
God knows why many people liked such a shallow comment. Literally you're wrong - Grace takes Jake to the mountain lab specifically to get him away from Quaritch - stopping him from giving info is the entire point. Dramatically this scene changes everything, it's a decisive moment of the entire plot - it leads Jake to become Toruk Makto, a plotline that started with the woodsprite scene hours earlier. It was cut because it was too expensive to render, and the film was too long - that's it.

This scene absolutely should not have been cut from the movie. Yeah, I get that run time is a thing, and it was already long. But this scene was important. In his determination to follow through with this ritual, even knowing fully well that he could have died trying, Jake showed where he truly felt he belonged by that point in the plot.

I love that little bit of the destroyed trees. I did see it as an omen of Hometree's destruction, but I could also kinda see it as Eywa's prophetic vision of what might become of Pandora's entire forestry if the Sky People had actually managed to defeat the Na'vi and destroy the Tree of Souls. If they'd had their way, they would had scorched-earth the planet's global forestry. As Jake had once mentioned: "Where I come from (Earth), there is no green there, they've killed their Mother. I remember reading about the Dream Hunt in one of the Lore Handbooks, but I never realized they made a scene for it.
What an incredible scene this would have been if fully realized I would have loved to have seen what this could have been if they had finished it and kept it in the final film
I disagree with a lot of people here surprisingly. Avatar is my favorite movie and I've seen it well over 50 times.
1) The initial scene with Grace, Norm, and Jake definitely should have been included. With some restructuring, they could have had this scene go before the part where Jake officially becomes a part of the Omatikaya people.
2) The drug trip scene, while nice, would have given too much away about what was to come. The tree will come down and Jake will ride Toruk. The audience will know exactly where the story goes. Maybe if they would have taken out the future stuff and only shown Jake how interconnected this planet is, then this scene would have been great, especially the visuals.
3) On top of the drug trip scene, I think this particular scene is going too close to stereotypical native vision quest that the white guy experiences. We all know how much criticism there already is for this movie in that regards.
I wonder if James Cameron ever went on an Ayahuasca trip in the Amazon before he wrote this.

I would live to see more of this in future Avatar movies maybe even have something like an astral plane shown in future films. It would be amazing to learn in future Avatar movies that something like Eywa existed on Earth.
Thanks 💯 for these clips
This adds WAY more depth to the mystical aspect of pandora that grace was speaking off. I watched the extended cut and none of this is in it.
That would have been crazy awesome If they added this.
All the deleted scenes and the extended edition scenes makes it feel like a whole other movie
Some of these deleted scene were very much needed
Lol this man has ascended
Lmfaoaioaoaoaoa no bc fr 😭😭😭
What is most interesting about this scene is how Toruk is Jake's spirit animal. The dream hunt shows a Na'vi's spirit animal and Jake over here got Toruk!
This scene should DEFINITELY have been in the movie
''They don't have a word for 'lie' ''
These deleted scenes are all amazing - they add so much tension and worldbuilding… they need a 5 hour cut or something of this damned movie - If they asked im sure alot of people would be intrigued enough to help financially support it - i know I WOULD omgg
This is the deleted scene I wish they kept the most.
Cutting the weird dream sequence was definitely the right call, but it's a damn shame they cut the conversation between Grace and Jake too because it's a better character interaction than anything else in the movie.
