    DISCLAIMERS ON FORMATS COVERED:
    Notice I said POPULAR formats, meaning a format where there is a significant amount of people who compete in it for tournaments and so on and so forth. Now Popular does not mean official even though two of the formats I will be covering were official formats being Japan Nintendo Cup and VGC, but it is an indicator of what a good portion of competitive players thought was “optimal” at the time. Also sometimes the Pokemon Battle Historia doesn't provide enough information to talk about certain Pokemon so I add Smogon analysis to make sense of it. This is pretty rare though.
    To the people asking why I don't cover Smogon Singles for Gens 1 and 2: It wouldn't really be a history video if I covered those because online Smogon gen 1 meta to my knowledge wasn't actually played until late 2000s. I wanted to cover tournaments/competitive battling that was actually played during the early years of Pokemon (late 90s).
    To the people asking why I cover Smogon at all for singles: To my knowledge, Smogon was the most popular format for Gens 3-5 and held a number of tournaments throughout the years. As for Gen 6, I am not covering Battle Spot Singles because there is more information and explanations about sets being used relative to their own meta on Smogon. In other words, there are few written analyses about Battle Spot Pokemon besides the Top tiers and I would like to avoid theorycrafting because it may have a hint of bias (though I theorycraft if I REALLY couldn't find information on a certain Pokemon). The keyword here is explanations. Though I did find statistics of most Pokemon used and most moves used, there wasn't really any explanations on why. Also the few Pokemon I did find analysis of for Top Tier Battle Spot Singles had very similar move sets to the Smogon OU sets anyway.
    For the record, I do not care what rules or formats people play their battles by nor am I saying these formats are the only formats that should be played. The way you play Pokemon is between you and your opponent and I will not fault you for using evasion or whatever, I just like examining popular tournament formats.

      Yes, I suggest making an Evolution of Baton Pass Teams from Gen 2 all the way to Gen 7 Ubers where it got banned from Smogon meta. It really shows the evolution of what used to be a niche idea that became more and more power over the years of the utility power creep. People should know how crazy Eeveepass is in Gen 7 Ubers, before it got slapped with the ban. It is downright terrifying to see a Global +2 Krokodile OHKO Defensive Xerneas.

    • @rabbits2345
      @rabbits2345 Před 6 lety +330

      As a baton pass user, there are lots of ways to get around Haze, Taunt, etc.
      1. Haze and Heart Swap can be blocked with Taunt (Mr. Mime)
      2. Phazing moves (and Red Card) are useless (Soundproof Mr. Mime or Ingrain)
      3. Encore, Taunt, and Topsy-Turvy can be bounced back (Espeon)
      4. Spectral Thief can be blocked by Smeargle
      5. Transform is blocked by substitutes
      6. Infiltrator doesn't matter when you're +6 in all stats :P
      How long does this take? About ~50 turns. Even if you get a Haze off, I can just try again. Not to say there aren't counters, but it's not that easy to stop

    • @daveshn
      @daveshn Před 6 lety +76

      rabbits2345 But any number of pokemon can have haze and by the time I switch in, you don't have time to switch in a blocker. Also, magic bounce didn't exist in gen 3 so encore's viable.
      Also, even if I'm just doing chip damage, if you have to go all those turns time and time again, I'll win the attrition battle.

    • @rabbits2345
      @rabbits2345 Před 6 lety +124

      Really only a small handful of (viable) pokemon can learn Haze, and they're all really slow. Yeah, you can run Dodrio with Haze (lol) but it's usually not too hard to sniff out who has might Haze on a team.
      I can scout for switches by using Baton Pass. If you switch to a Hazer, I bring in my Taunt mon. If you don't switch, then I'll just keep boosting up. And Magic Bounce didn't exist, but Magic Coat did, which effectively does the same thing.
      In addition to all that, you can only surprise me with Haze once. After that, I know exactly what you're doing if you switch in your Hazer. And you didn't kill anyone, so I can just try again

    Smeargle: The Ultimate Support Pokemon. With it, you are only limited by your imagination, and the bans that it caused if you so choose to abide by those balancing factors. Great at setting hazards, boosting its teammates, putting everything to sleep, getting huge chunks of damage through set damage moves. With all theses options, you think you could get lucky and not run into the 1 set that rips your team a new one, but no, only that one shows up every time. Screw you Smeargle.

There's not much freedom in how creative you can be if you are using Smogon when you look at the broad picture of what you are actually doing. Set up a sweeper, use the sweeper, stop other sweepers.

    Smeargle always reminds me of this one player I knew whose only strategy was a Smeargle with a Focus Sash and it knew Spore, Sticky Web, Stealth Rocks, and Toxic Spikes.
    Literally his only strategy against his viewers was to set up with Smeargle and sweep with his Dragon Dance Dragonite. It was kind of funny to watch his team fall apart when someone used multi-hit moves or a Lum Berry to KO Smeargle instantly.
