    DISCLAIMERS ON FORMATS COVERED:
Notice I said POPULAR formats, meaning a format where there is a significant amount of people who compete in it for tournaments and so on and so forth.
For the record, I do not care what rules or formats people play their battles by nor am I saying these formats are the only formats that should be played. The way you play Pokemon is between you and your opponent. I just like examining popular tournament formats.

Quiver dance is an amazing move. Once you get to the 3 stats buffed in a single move, you start to gain value with even one turn of surviving the setup. Swords Dance, dragon dance, calm mind, bulk up, cosmic power, all fair to good, balanced moves that require you to attack or survive 2 moves in order to get them to pay off, but quiver dance, if you set it up once, you're terrifying, and the boosts mean its usually easier to set it up multiple times.
Add tinted lens and baton pass to this and suddenly you're a monster.

This was a complex ban. You see, it was banned from UU because it was simply too good for that meta, but in NU it simply wasn't that good. The things that check and counter Venomoth were only good in NU. ;)

    • @butteredsalmonella
      @butteredsalmonella Před 4 lety +169

So basically Venomoth was in Gen 6 NU but had a Niche in UU, Venomoth's Niche became a Mainstay Staple and was too powerful in UU and was banned to UUBL, Baton Pass was banned which allowed it to fall all the way down to RU but shattered RU and was banned to RUBL. It's the same as Pokemon having a Niche in higher tiers but sucks in it's own tier but Venomoth was too oppressive that he left a tier where he sucked ass.
What a ride, Venomoth rose and fell tiers like it's an Elevator.

I think its worth mentioning that Venomoth was actually something quite interesting and unique back in gen 1 Nintendo cup 1997! Poison types are significantly better in that format since Double team was allowed and Toxic was a common way of dealing with it, Poison types useing Double team couldn't be handled by that method! In addition Having Sleep power and stun Spore at 90 speed is actually a lot better then some of you might think, in Nintendo Cup level 50 Jynx was the best most common pokemon used, and it was usually a lead for its ability to pur something to sleep and then freeze something else with 30% Blizzards all the while taking those opportunities to set up Double team, Since Nintendo cup was bring 6 pick 3 those qualities made Jynx incredibly dangerous! However if you Run venomoth at level 53 it outspeeds Jynx and can put to sleep before Jynx can use Lovely Kiss! Then it can set up its own Double teams and paralyze something else on the switch. Nothing else that beats Jynx has a paralyzing move! (Besides body slam) and finally since Venomoth doesn't hit too hard it actually makes use of an attack that you wouldn't expect. Psywave! When used several times due to the free turns given by Double team and sleep powder in average it does some pretty alright damage output for a Venomoth! replay.pokemonshowdown.com/rby-gen1nintendocup97-1525 This is not my battle but it's a good example how someone useing Venomoth to moderate success!

I still love Venomoth to this day.
Been playing NatdexUU and I have this absolute weapon sweeping if things go right.
Slap it up with Buginium Z. Have your sleep powder, quiver dance then Bug buzz and giga drain.
    Youre all set.
Doesnt work 100% of the time solely because of Sleep powders accuracy, but its fairly consistent.
People dont really seem to remember tinted lens when they send in their fire or steel type that get absolutely demolished thanks to tinted lens. If they ARE a bulky mon like Mega Steelix or Mega Aggron, you have that buginium Z to one shot.
The only thing to be afraid of at full health is choice banded aqua jet from crawdaunt/ choicebanded bullet punch from scizor or something waking up in the middle of quiver dancing to one shot with a physical attack.
You live and die by the sleep and its possible to go substitute like FSG said, but giga drains just so nice with the overabundance of seismitoads/swamperts around.
Sap Sipper users like Goodra can be seen here and there, but are generally uncommon and you should have a team mate to hopefully help with that.

How to make Venomoth OU? Raise it's SpA to 100 or even 110. TBH it's already got most other things down. A decent ability, good STAB options, base 90 speed is nothing to scoff at. It just needs more power. Clefable became a total god in Gen 6 with only a 10 point boost in it's SpA and changing it's type to mono Fairy.

Easily one of my favorite vids on the channel. It's just such a wild ride, watching it absolutely invert the usual "powercrept into obscurity" trend, especially for a gen 1 Bug mon; and not only did it find a niche in the first place, it managed to slowly and quietly turn itself into an utter TERROR in the mid-tier meta. Beautiful.
