PORYGON! The Virtual Pokemon! One of the oddest Pokemon there is, and probably the closest one to a digimon. How good was it in competitive battles though? Join False Swipe Gaming on this brief overview of competitive Porygon and Porygon2 in competitive Pokemon!

DISCLAIMERS ON FORMATS COVERED:
Notice I said POPULAR formats, meaning a format where there is a significant amount of people who compete in it for tournaments and so on and so forth. Now Popular does not mean official even though two of the formats I will be covering were official formats being Japan Nintendo Cup and VGC, but it is an indicator of what a good portion of competitive players thought was “optimal” at the time. Also sometimes the Pokemon Battle Historia doesn't provide enough information to talk about certain Pokemon so I add Smogon analysis to make sense of it. This is pretty rare though.
To the people asking why I don't cover Smogon Singles for Gens 1 and 2: It wouldn't really be a history video if I covered those because online Smogon gen 1 meta to my knowledge wasn't actually played until late 2000s. I wanted to cover tournaments/competitive battling that was actually played during the early years of Pokemon (late 90s).
To the people asking why I cover Smogon at all for singles: To my knowledge, Smogon was the most popular format for Gens 3-5 and held a number of tournaments throughout the years. As for Gen 6, I am not covering Battle Spot Singles because there is more information and explanations about sets being used relative to their own meta on Smogon. In other words, there are few written analyses about Battle Spot Pokemon besides the Top tiers and I would like to avoid theorycrafting because it may have a hint of bias (though I theorycraft if I REALLY couldn't find information on a certain Pokemon). The keyword here is explanations. Though I did find statistics of most Pokemon used and most moves used, there wasn't really any explanations on why. Also the few Pokemon I did find analysis of for Top Tier Battle Spot Singles had very similar move sets to the Smogon OU sets anyway.
For the record, I do not care what rules or formats people play their battles by nor am I saying these formats are the only formats that should be played. The way you play Pokemon is between you and your opponent and I will not fault you for using evasion or whatever, I just like examining popular tournament formats.

OMG GINORMOUS MISTAKE. At 9:20 we accidently put gen 4 Porygon Z's vgc move set for Porygon2's gen 5. The set is supposed to be a trick room set with bolt beam and magic coat or protect. Huge apologies :(
False Swipe Gaming you gave us 4 videos this week, we can ignore a small error
Dude, it’s all gucci, you’re gifting us with multiple videos in a week, I feel a single mistake shouldn’t be the difference in how we all enjoy the video
False Swipe Gaming If you call that a huge mistake what is Verlisify’s channel?
I noticed that when Porygon2 didn't have the Eviolite. Apologies accepted :)
SANDSLASH! please.
*Porygon: the SCAPEGOAT Pokemon.* Of course the studio would never allow their golden cash rat Pikachu take the fall for the seizures.
Wasn't it pikachu that used the attack that caused the seizures as well? If that's then case then they did Porygon an injustice
#justiceforporygon
!!!!!!!?????? That’s exactly what happened. In the episode Pikachu uses an attack to blow up some missiles. The explosion made the screen flash red and blue in a way that almost seems like seizures were intended. However, since Pikachu is the mascot and beloved, along with the episode being focused on Porygon, Porygon took the full brunt of the outrage and neither it nor its evolutions have appeared since.

I LOVE Porygon. It was always the Pokemon that seemed "special" in Gen 1. The way you got it at the game corner (the only Pokemon you couldn't catch but had to buy) the moves it had, it's origin story. It was all unique. Great video man! I've just been binging you this last week and let me just say you got some great stuff on here.
I believe that was one of the few elements that made it to the final game.
I remember reading somewhere that when the franchize was still on capsule monster beta you could purchase pokemon on the poke marts (or at least that was the intended concept) but the shopkeeper would determine which ones you could purchase according to your medals.
With that aside I have to say that I love Porygon as well, probably my favourite normal type and gen 1 pokemon.
Nigga what're u doing here? Xd
I'm pretty sure dratini you also had to buy. I can't remember how you got jinx though

I Love how he says "huuuge fall" as the porygon falls
Nobody during Gen 1:
Game freak: if Porygon was so good why isn't there a Porygon2
Actually Porygon2 is one of the 40 Pokémon planned for gen I who were moved to Gen II. They already wanted to put it in but they didn't have enough time. Others include Skarmory, scizor and Giraferig.
Porygon2 is actually developed first than Porygon
@@MrMarinus18 Obvious joke should be obvious
@@MrMarinus18 Nope. They overwrote Missingno.s with those Pokemon in gen II, but, if you take a look at the betas for both gen I and II, you'd see it was a different story.
@@Eriorguez I'm sorry but that doesn't make sense. It means they made several Pokémon. Then had an invalid ID and then go on and then made another invalid one. They did have them planned but just didn't finish them. The 105 invalid ID's are because the hardware needed 256 ID's.
When I was younger, I thought porygon was always psychic- electric type.
Don't worry man pokemon logic it's stupid
I thought it was pure psychic myself
Lugia is the guardian of the and very related to the sea yet it is a flying psychic type
@Roland Santino Soliven it creates storms with a flap of its wings that is way more water type than psychic type. Plus well counter part is a fire type.

fun fact, since the discovery of slam not paralizing normals in RBY, porygon has found a nitch as a snorelax check/counter. if the lax only has phycical moves then porygon can stall it with recover so long as it isn't paralized.
How GOOD was pumping these 4 videos out ACTUALLY?
I have a feeling it took a toll on him.
The Unknown Otaku It's to make up when he didn't upload for like 4 months :p
George Callacna that never happened
HYPER OLLIE He had a short time where he didn't upload but I'm just exaggerating.
George Callacna Stop spreading misinformation. Not that easy to tell you're exaggerating or being sarcastic when it's through text online
Girthquake I've been subbed to him when he had only 1 video and guys it's just a joke and it's not even like I'm slandering the guys name. I'm happy he gave us 4 videos especially as a Melee player.
Two porygons in one, wow!
I think its 3 porygon. Porygon+Porygon 2= Porygon 3
I see you everywhere now
thebahooplamaster kunning he/she
Wow, kachow
Porygon is now somehow actually pretty good in gen 1 OU. its stats + recover are barely enough to completely wall Snorlax, and it pressures others with paralysis. Porygon teams don't have to run reflect lax/ chansey
It's still hard to use, but it's funny how something with stats this bad is actually usable
I’m kinda shocked this never came up, actually!
@@technicolormischief-maker5683 Porygon being good is a pretty recent thing, because normal types not being paralyzed by body slam was a pretty recent discovery
Also like, it's such an outlandish strategy it makes sense it took this long to figure out
Currently, Porygon is in NU. With that niche, it could climb up the ranks and become a solid UU pokemon
@@omarkn7506 eh not really, because of porygons garbage stats it's really dependent on the metagame to find it's niche. porygon is great in NU and decent in OU but it's really, really bad in UU
You really gotta wonder what the hell GameFreak was thinking when they made some of these moves, especially the ones from the first generation. Here we've got Sharpen, a move exclusive to one Pokemon (later, one Pokemon's evolution chain, to which it would remain exclusive all the way until gen5). You'd think with such pisspoor distribution, the attack must be pretty damn worthwhile, but nope, it just increases attack by ONE stage. Still, seems much better than the likes of Synchronoise, or what I'd consider to be the single worst attack in the history of the entire franchise, Razor Wind.
I'll agree that moves like Razor Wind deserves huge buffs; I mean, a charge attack that does less damage than pretty much any lategame move? It's not even good in Gen 1, its debut, perhaps with the exception of stuff that's forced to use it there such as Aerodactyl.
On the other hand, it's easy to forget that Pokémon wasn't designed with a huge, internet-boosted metagame scene in mind. This is why you can probably beat most games with a party of Beedrill (except Gen 1. Try it there at your own risk), and it's almost certainly why fan games that focus on their metagames have such badly made campaigns (I'm looking at you, Pokémon Uranium). I can see somebody using a physical Porygon in their main game, or other Pokémon in unconventional ways. Might actually be a fun challenge compared to Nuzlockes.
For a draft league game, I prepped a Work Up Synchronoise Vaporeon designed to beat Toxapex. I was super upset when my opponent didn't even bring Toxapex.
My favorite example is Kinesis, an attack learned by literally NO Pokemon in Red and Blue and only accessible through Metronome. It would later go on to become the Abra line's signature attack.
What does it do? With 80% accuracy, you can reduce your opponent's accuracy... By 1 stage. Yay.
How GOOD was Donphan/Steelix ACTUALLY?
Steelix was godly in Gen 2, and then it got worse and worse.
Yes please, my bro Steelix needs mad love.
I still use Steelix (only in its mega) and donphan. They both have a good coverage with their Fang moves.
Steelix has STAB Ground and Steal and that is a thing to be afraid of and donphan can be a very good (IMO the best) spinner cauz it has this Fang moves and STAB Ground moves. Its also a good wall with an outstanding Attack stat of 120 so... even rapid spin makes some good dmg while youre removing hazards.
IMO there is no Type that can hurt you with this great coverage. You can just stay in and if there is no better choice while battling than getting a ground type out you have 2 very good ones
Steelix is one of my favorite Pokemon and imo a very underrated Mega as well which is why I use him still. I would like to see a video explaining his history in competitive scene cause I know he was a beast in Gen 2 but I'm curious about the others cause I never thought he was bad in the others.
I spy with my eye someone that needs it's own patch

Porygon2 is one of my favorite pokemon. Remember using it in gen 2 and 3 but when gen4 came along and released porygonZ I really disliked the change. When eviolite was released I loved the fact that porygon2 was viable again. I bred one and named it windows XP and ever since I've had him in my Team either the original one or a different bred one. Porygon2 has always such a sturdy wall and such a reliable pokemon that I can't see myself ever using Z over 2. Yes he has his weaknesses but the tank duck will forever live on in my heart.

I kinda wish this one had come a bit later, as Porygon2 has become extremely influential in the Gen 7 VGC meta as both an adaptable tanky special attacking threat and trick room user.
Makes a lot of sense that porygon 2 spiked in vgc usage with the advent of fairy types to scare away fighting types. I just started playing, so its interesting to see a time where it wasn't so good you had to bring a way to handle it.
