Notice I said POPULAR formats, meaning a format where there is a significant amount of people who compete in it for tournaments and so on and so forth. Now Popular does not mean official even though two of the formats I will be covering were official formats being Japan Nintendo Cup and VGC, but it is an indicator of what a good portion of competitive players thought was “optimal” at the time. Also sometimes the Pokemon Battle Historia doesn't provide enough information to talk about certain Pokemon so I add Smogon analysis to make sense of it. This is pretty rare though.
To the people asking why I don't cover Smogon Singles for Gens 1 and 2: It wouldn't really be a history video if I covered those because online Smogon gen 1 meta to my knowledge wasn't actually played until late 2000s. I wanted to cover tournaments/competitive battling that was actually played during the early years of Pokemon (late 90s).
To the people asking why I cover Smogon at all for singles: To my knowledge, Smogon was the most popular format for Gens 3-5 and held a number of tournaments throughout the years. As for Gen 6, I am not covering Battle Spot Singles because there is more information and explanations about sets being used relative to their own meta on Smogon. In other words, there are few written analyses about Battle Spot Pokemon besides the Top tiers and I would like to avoid theorycrafting because it may have a hint of bias (though I theorycraft if I REALLY couldn't find information on a certain Pokemon). The keyword here is explanations. Though I did find statistics of most Pokemon used and most moves used, there wasn't really any explanations on why. Also the few Pokemon I did find analysis of for Top Tier Battle Spot Singles had very similar move sets to the Smogon OU sets anyway.
For the record, I do not care what rules or formats people play their battles by nor am I saying these formats are the only formats that should be played. The way you play Pokemon is between you and your opponent and I will not fault you for using evasion or whatever, I just like examining popular tournament formats.

It’s pretty sad how bad mewtwo is in melee considering it’s lightning fast by gen 1 standards, much faster than pikachu in fact. Sadly for boo boo balance reasons they basically gave us armored mewtwo with how slow/weak he is.

Note for anybody who doesn't understand why 101 HP Substitutes enable Mewtwo to beat Blissey:
Blissey's most common attacking move is Seismic Toss, which, at level 100, does exactly 100 damage. As such, a 101 HP Substitute means it needs to Toss twice to break one of Mewtwo's Subs.

How GOOD was Gallade ACTUALLY?
I like how Gen 1 Mewtwo was designed to be beyond broken, other legendaries after it were made to be stronger and tankier than regular pokémon, but gen 1 Mewtwo was so absurdedly over the top, it was great. In a gen were most pokémon had very very limited movepools, and base stats like around 100/105 were considered pretty good, Mewtwo had: best typing and STAB in the game; huge movepool with access to almost every great move like Amnesia, Blizzard and Recover; 130 speed, making it the second fastest mon in the game for no reason, and 154 spA, which at the time was just complete insanity. And Mewtwo is bulky too, it had no business being that busted, but it was, and it was amazing. The fact that it was a final boss in Stadium, and you could still lose even when countering it, says a lot about it.
not as much of a final boss as round 2 fisherman in the Pika Cup I beat Mewtwo first try
A team of Chansey, Snorlax, Mewtwo, Exeggutor, Mew, and Slowbro can take down a Mewtwo easily. But yea Mewtwo is the best RBY Pokemon
there were still a few ways of handling it like freezing it, blowing up on it, status it, Seismic toss/Ice Beam Chansey, Self destruct Snorlax, Swords Dance Mew, Explosion Exeggutor, Amensia Slowbro l, and Ice Beam Mewtwo.
Yeah other legendaries are designed to be "much more powerful than ANY ONE ordinary pokemon" while Gen1 Mewtwo is designed to be "the final boss that you fight with your ENTIRE TEAM".

Expanding force was the best addition to its movepool; for doubles at least. the thing is an absolute monster. It's really good in singles too paired w indeedee and a physical scarfer like galar darmanitan that like the psychic terrain to shut down priority, same goes for setup sash mons

That's why you don't ever send out your Mewtwo first. You''ll want to hold onto it until the very end , because the other player will always try to specifically counter your Mewtwo. Something like a Snorlax body slam followed by a self-destruct; Chansey thunderwaving it; Eggsecutor or Jynx inflicting sleep on it; Even Electrode is very effective at dealing with it, as he's good at finishing weakened pokemon off.

In Gen I, Mewtwo was OP:
-Psychic had no type weaknesses (minus power 20 bug moves)
-Special stat of 154
-It was before Special Split, so technically its Sp Atk/Sp Def were both 154 in R/B
-Could recover, and Amnesia rose Special ( both Sp Atk/Sp Def)
-Huge Vareity of Coverage Moves. Thunderbolt, Bubble Beam, Ice Beam, Flamethrower, Submission etc
-Tied for 2nd highest speed, resulting in a 25% Critical chance
-Access to Recover and Rest
-High HP for really bulky Substitutes
Seriously if it had even the movea that were introduced in later generations like Taunt and Bulk Up, it would even beat a full team of Mewtwos just by itself.

@@sonix7769 no, it can't. Mewtwo actually survives choice scarf dragon ascent without any defensive investment (mega mewtwo doesn't but you aren't forced to mega evolve). Here's the thing, mega ray also survives mewtwo's ice beam but mewtwo is still faster if it also runs scarf. Those two are so extremely versatile that there are a thousand different things that could happen if they meet on the battlefield. Of course, mega rayquaza is the better pokemon overall (there IS a reason why it is banned from ubers) but doesn't change the fact that mega rayquaza actually loses against certain mewtwo sets (choice specs with ice beam wins an 1v1 against most if not almost every offensive variant of mega ray but some variants with defensive investment would beat it)

It lived in Mewtwo's shadow every single gen. But still good thanks to it's expansive movepool and base 100 stats across the board
Sounds about right. My older brother had a friend who had 6 mewtwos because he traded from his other pokemon game and gameboy and was simply unbeatable. He had specialized the movesets to have total type coverage twice over so even if through attrition a mewtwo did go down it had another that could still counter whatever got a lucky crit or barely picked it off after sacrificing 1 or 2 other pokemon first to weaken it.
I have literally no clue on what's going on 60% of the video, i even attended competitive pokemon tournaments for a while, and all things considered this was such a great and deep analysis, it left me wondering how such an emblematic pokemon and all the combos mentioned didn't even crossed my head. excellent content, it's super effective.

I'm currently playing a fangame called Pokemon Zeta and Mewtwo has a holdable item called strange machine and this makes gives it dope looking (but only cosmetic) armor that updates its sprite in battles and in the overworld, but most importantly gives it this OP skill called hubris, which increases it's special attack every time it gets a KO. With a pokemon that can already OHKO a lot of others, giving it even higher attack with each subsequent KO is absolutely a killer. So much fun.
So Calyrex-Shadow stole this gimmick of raising Special Attack after a K.O?
So it's not only cosmetic

the strange machine has a use but the armor given is independently cosmetic, thats what op meant

I love how in most of if not all his videos, he usually says "How good was this Pokémon Actually?" but for Mewtwo he doesn't even need to go there... Just stating the term "Mewtwo is Here!" only speaks for itself. It's a Pokémon that genuinely needs no question of its power because it's already so terrifying and powerful that it questions what even rivals it? Just that fact alone shows how far Mewtwo has gotten over the years and to this very day Gen 1 Mewtwo still remains one of the most terrifying Pokémon in existence next to Mega Rayquaza. That's Legendary status! 👍
I’m playing a stadium hack right now and darn Mewtwo is such a Pain to play against if you re not using the Mewtwo counters like Chansey, Snorlax, Slowbro, Exeggutor
There are very limited answers to RBY Mewtwo and even your own Mew and Mewtwo isn’t a guaranteed

Gen1 Mewtwo had the BST equivalent of 744, due to essentially having 154 special attack and special defense, and almost nothing could resist it, and nothing was immune to it. And of course, it’s the 4th fastest Pokémon in the game, had Gen 1 amnesia, and a crit ratio of ~25% on almost EVERYTHING
Yeah, this blows Gen 8 Zacian and Mega Rayquaza out of the water
Mewtwo does have answers, and it’s biggest weakness is that it’s best answer is itself. So that means that every team has the best answer to mewtwo on it. Rayquaza and zacian do are not counters to themselves, meaning they are still offensive monsters that demand very specific answers that can still just lose.

I love listening to these. I never got into competitive Pokémon, but having played other games competitively I absolutely love hearing these sorts of details. Makes me wish I could go back in time and play it competitively from the beginning.

I suddenly realised that even after all those years Pokémon Stadium has something new for me: I never saw Mewtwo doing the move Submission.
Leto85 its not really a Good move for Mewtwo in Gen 1.
Taking Recoil Damage sucks and if you want to hit Chansey and Snorlax you can just use Psychic which crumbles Chansey the same way with Psychic Drops
Submission is better in Gen 2

Not Exactly A Human Being Since Chansey ususally uses Softboiled to shugg off special hits, Mewtwo can just use Psychic repeatedly until Special Drops happen.
+6 Mewtwo Psychic vs. Chansey through Light Screen: 158-186 (22.4 - 26.4%) -- 17.4% chance to 4HKO
+6 Mewtwo Psychic vs. - 2 Chansey through Light Screen: 314-369 (44.6 - 52.4%) -- 20.2% chance to 2HKO
Chansey will eventually crumble to Special Drops even with Light Screen on.
You can always use Submission too but its not even a guranteed 2OHKO and you take a lot of recoil in the process
Mewtwo Submission vs. Chansey: 336-396 (47.7 - 56.3%) -- 86.7% chance to 2HKO
Same applies for Snorlax

Not Exactly A Human Being Its an option but taking 20 percent or more recoil with Mewtwo is not exactly appealing especially for just Chansey and Snorlax
You also just get utterly walled easier by other Psychics like Exeggutor, Slowbro, Mew, and even opposing Mewtwo.
If Chansey hasn't setup Light Screen yet you can also hit it hard on the switch if you boost up a alot already

+6 Mewtwo Psychic vs. Snorlax: 423-498 (80.8 - 95.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Regular Ninetales is straight up bad. But Alolan Ninetales is quite good. It was BL thanks to it being too strong in UU.
