As a meganium fan, I can honestly tell you I saw that placement from a mile away. Meganium will get its day sooner or later.
Call it Mr. Stake and it cant be killed in a nuzlock
Chikorita is pretty good in Mystery Dungeon at least.
This won’t stop us from using Meganium in game while building a strong team to support
It got Knock off, Trailblaze, Solar Blade, Zen Headbutt, Body Press, Grassy Glide, Encore and Endeavor in the DLC now. Won't mend it's stats but movepool-Wise it's much, much better now.
It has Swords Dance already, maybe it's not as garbage in lower tiers now.
In the fanfare Radical Red its great, with an ability giving priority to healing moves like giga Drain and the Fairy typing
If this was on doubles, incineroar would need its own tier

My personal buff for meganium would be to change it to a fire fighting type, give it the speed boost ability, and change its name to Blaziken
Cool, now you got a Blaziken with Meganium's move pool.
no just switch its special defense stat with its HP and give meganium spore, sleep powder or thunder wave

After years of ridicule, Meganium just needs a broken Hidden Ability or Signature move that turns things around for it. There's still a lot of broken Pokemon after 9 generations. I wouldn't mind them buffing Meganium to an extreme extent. Mons like Pidgeot and Meganium look so cool but are so insanely average that it's almost disheartening.

It was the first fire/fighting 😂
I don't. So many people thought it was an insta win PKMN they didn't knew how to use it properly and barely did any damage despite being an "Uber" threat.

Poor Meganium. It looks like they at least gave it Body Press as something interesting but as far as I can tell so far, the only way it can raise its defense is with Curse or an uncommon random boost from Ancient Power.
It also has knock off so it can also force progress which is a pretty nice thing to have

Free my boy Blastoise
It's not just an unofficial tier, it's a make believe meta that only can exist on simulations. Smogon OU singles and even all of the lower unofficial tiers like ZU or UUbers can be replicated in the actual games themselves, you can't do that at all with NatDex, because certain moves no longer exist, Pokemon are missing, AND multiple different generational mechanics are allowed. It's about as real as Almost Any Ability, STABmons, or any of the other OMs that exist on Smogon, which is why it's not worth mentioning when talking strictly official formats.
We don't use a hyphen between the word mega and the Pokemon's name.

Actually im pretty sure the protean/libero change was due to Tera. Like you said Gren had it or 3 gens and they left it alone. Im sure there would have been bugs or terablast would be absurd on them, also if keckleon stays gone that would make sense as a reason. (Not that keckleon was used a lot lol)
It definitely was because it was broken or that they thought it was distracting.
Bugs would have been simple to fix, thats really not an issue. This is coming from a dev.
I'm fairly confident because it was Cinderace wrecking stuff in Battle Stadium Singles (BSS). With Bounce, Bulk Up/HJK, Sucker Punch, Pyro Ball, and Gigantamax it could go for a Max Airstream then pick and choose its counters, deftly avoiding any priority with Protean that could dent it.
@@BrendonCap Gamefreak having an easy time fixing bugs? ha, that's funny.
That doesn't seem particularly likely, since Tera just disables those abilities, so they could've done the same thing with the previous version.

Its essentially Swampert but double weak to Flying. Which is generally rare to see in competitive and on difficult game.
Flying is absolutely not uncommon to see in competitive.
Contrary Serperior with leaf storm and choice specs plus maxed out speed is way too deadly.
i think specs serperior is one of the worse serp sets tbh. sub leech glare leaf storm (you could swap a move for coverage such as hidden power/tera blast). the ability to spread paralysis as a mon that fast + being able to take advantage of paralysis to setup is crazy good. serp isn’t as scary if it’s just clicking leaf storm and, for example, if someone switches in a heatran your stuck with a specs leaf storm instead of being able to snipe it with coverage like hidden power/ tera blast ground or, even better, paralyze it.
specs serp is Bad
Grass is a trash offensive typing.
Serp loves spamming its aupport moves like glare, leechseed and defog
Or screens
@@NasJuiced You make a very good point however Serp's many weaknesses may mean to use at least 2 moves it needs a sash. Sashing it ain't a bad move or anything but it takes away the use of another item. Honestly your opinion is clever and probably better than how I like to use Serp however I like brute force!
@@mangosteak Just because a type is trash offensively, doesn't mean a Pokemon that has that type is. And Grass is probably worse defensively due to its many weaknesses! Its honestly up to you how to play with it and I respect your opinion as that is how Serp is usually played! I just like trying to take mons out quickly before they can set up entry hazards and status conditions.
@@AlectricEelthe idea is more than grass isn't great offensively, so you don't want to lock yourself into it. Using Leaf Storm to get the +2 and using that to break your normal switchins with something like Tera Blast Fire is a lot more effective than being forced out yourself. Alternatively, grabbing a substitute can let you spam Leaf Storm forever and eventually break everything that used to wall you

I'm soo dedicated to Swampert (even before the physical/special split) that I don't care using an over-leveled mixed attacking starter during playthroughs (hydro pump/surf; ice beam; earthquake; brick break).
I even trade every Swampert I've ever played with to another game before restarting my gen 3 games!
@@t.j.helming5534 Mixed Swampert was pretty much the standard in Gens 3 and 4. I think the biggest reason they have changed Protean/Libero is the interaction with terastalization. However, I think this change will stay even in future gens.
It'ld be nice if they gave Kelceon a variant of the original version. Being able to swap between types freely makes it really fun. With it's stats keep it from being overwhelming. (Very high sp.def, average hp, defense attack, and low speed)
It also gets priority Dark/Ghost/Normal attacks, giving it a lot of fun immunity play.

I wonder how much this list will change with their full return in Teal Mask/Indigo Disk SV DLC? Sadly it will be quite while since it usually takes several testing and actual tourneys to fully test out a complete list in regards to the full changes.
God, Greninja, and Cinderace used to be absolutely terrifying back then, so I've heard. Having practically the same abilities that were broken. I think its good they nerfed their abilities because they were almost unstoppable.
But the fact they almost destroyed competitive battles kinda makes me love them even more
Awesome video! I'm a shiny hunter, not a competitive player, but I love watching comp videos so I really like that you get so detailed on the history of all these mons. Even the bad ones!
Yeah, I always knew my boy would be in first, like he is supposed to be. But in all seriousness, I think Hisuian Sammurott, Skeliderge and Meowscarada will be seen in A tier next gen, specially the former 2, since I just can’t see Skeliderge losing it’s niche in ubers without a legendary unaware pokemon being released. Ubers is currently way too powerful and it’s in need of an unaware user, and he is just the best one.
It'll lose tera next gen so it wont be nearly as viable as it is now. It has wayy too many common weaknesses for a slow pokemon to be good without tera next gen. Meowscarada got tripple axel and is now actually one of the most used mon on ou according to the usage chart finchinator tweeted

I also think Swampert should get Slack Off, Recover or Regenerator.

To Meganium fans I would encourage a HGSS run where you play your friends after each gym! The Chikorita line is fantastic if you approach it competitively with mons available at that time
Turtwig was my first ever starter, and i can say confidently that the phrase "Shell Smash Torterra" gives me goosebumps. he might not be one of the most ridiculous mons out there but good gods above is he a tanky mf. add shell smash to that and you have a cannonball of a pokemon
Bro the fact that dlc is $35 is insane
Meganium wouldn't be so lonely if you had counted Pikachu
At least the lets go starters have coverage
Meganium should get a signature move that sets up sun and grassy terrain simultaneously

Quaquaval in the past few months has also gained Knock Off and Triple Axel. Its honestly a really cool pokemon
How is charizard ranked so high when it’s been pu for the last 3 gens
That’s puzzling me too… but if the video author was making a video based on NATDEX-Tier where Both Mega Char versions are available, it has its sense because both are very solid mons, normal Char in Pu and UU char is quite nasty…
So, probabily a little FORCED but Char deserve a seat in the upper level of the pyramid 🙂
It’s recently dropped to ZU. I’m even more baffled as to why it’s ranked so high here
My favorite and chosen starters for each gen:
Gen 1: Bulbasaur
Gen 2: Totodile
Gen 3: Treecko
Gen 4: Turtwig
Gen 5: Snivy
Gen 6: Froakie
Gen 7: Rowlet
Gen 8: Sobble
Gen 9: Fuecoco
Looking at the list, I think I've picked rather well. I tend towards reptile/amphibian Pokémon, with a bias towards Grass and the resulting choices haven't been bad.
Besides the first two I also have the same favorites (gen 3 to gen 9), but My fav of all starter is by far far far far margin Squirtle (I have a Blastoise tattoo on my back). 2nd gen is Chikorita (but is more by a nostalgic factor than competitive or any other way)
We need these tierlist from you!
Great video.
I would like to see more of these tier list videos. Could the next one be the regional variants ranked?
No matter if some of the starters were strong or not, they still are iconic and memorable, and we will remember them for a long time to come.
Meganium fans: GF please buff
GF: What? You want us to give Charizard ANOTHER new form?
Serperior is my favorite starter and I liked its high place.
I did have fun mopping the floor with Zacian & Cinderace in doubles.
"Oh, you have a bulky water type? Well Libero energy ball should deal with that fine."
I couldn't stop thinking of terminal montage's animation while watching this
Great video as always: of course I'd make a few changes though
Samurott down to E: It might have been good in NU but it's still always NU, similar to Typhlosion's frequent NU excursions
Chesnaught up to C: The OU niche in XY does a fair bit for me here even if it ead RU by usage
Skeledirge to A: Only one generation but it's literally checking the most broken pokemon conceived. Definitely higher than Meow
Zard atleast a tier lower as well? been badge if you exclude the bias and 2 megas it got, B tops but C even
I'm glad that Torterra finally got Shell Smash and other moves in Gen 9. (It should've gotten Shell Smash in BDSP) Though on BDSP, there must've been tiers for it right? I remember when Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee had its own playable tiers.
Decidueye also saw a good amount of use in gen 7 UU, it was a decent stallbreaker in a meta where stallbreakers were inconsistent due to stall's variety, and its Z-move was incredibly powerful, even to resists.
This was an awesome video format. Please do this again for the pseudo legendaries and legendaries.
It really goes to show, despite Grass having the reputation of one of the worst offensive typing, their support capabilities and resistances to some key types. Grass serves to be one of the most balanced types (in terms of starters)
From my view and counting, using the number of Mons above and below C-Tier (which i consider as the middle ground)
- Grass is well-balanced
- Fire, even counting regional forms is POWERFUL as well as popular, it helps that many games have a sparce diversity of fire types.
- Water while favouring average towards above average. As a whole, to me, it's reliable. Squirtle was my first ever Pokémon, Gatr was my first ever shiny. I tend to lean towards the Water type.
-
That’s what makes Meganium extra bad. It manages to be a grass type without all those good grass support moves and good abilities that grass types tend to have. Also grass is frequently a good secondary typing on defensive mons (see ferrothorn or Amoonguss) but Meganium is monotype. Bro never stood a chance. 😢
@@brain_tonicblame power creep and the existance of better Pokémon
Just use Tangrowth , it’s just much better than most things Meganium can do
Offensive Grass types ; Ferrothorn , Ogerpon-Hearthflame, Waterpon and Rockpon exist now, even Kartana and Mega Venusaur
Venusaur nowadays is a lot better since Poison typing helps it with Fairies
@@bryanc1772 it should also be noted that Meganium has access to the Grass staples of Leech Seed, Powders and self-healing as well as dual screens.
Then Serperior came along.
@@sebarsht12 It actually only has poison powder, which is a terrible move... meanwhile Venusaur has sleep powder and toxic. Also hundreds of mons have screens, pretty irrelevant to mention. Leech seed is on every defensive grass pretty much, so Meganium isn't really standing out with that either.
Please do a theorem video explaining the impact of entry hazards (forretress theorem)
Wow. I love Venusaur, but did not expect it to be ranked this high. And right next to its “cooler” sibling no less.
Its interesting to think about how different this list is now. Of course blaziken earns a top spot for so many years of dominance but he has definitely been power crept quite a bit.
Charizard: The best and worst starter of ALL TIME
Except you are incorrect about Charizard being the worst starter of all time
@@andytaker3073true but he has been top tier and bottom tier multiple times
@@mragabiou5478the only time it’s bottom tier is gen 1 arguably. Gen 2 it’s good and gen 3 onwards, Meganium exists
Let me freshen up your knowledge.
Gen2 fire starter has same bst. And yet we talk less about it then the grass type which is ironic considering its almost non-existing fanbase
without megas its D at best
Imagine releasing this the day Sceptile gets shed tail
Some fun Cinderace tech
Since Ace is mono type instead of dual type like its Protean starter counterparts, using a fire type move as your first move will not trigger Libero.
You can use Pyro Ball or Will o Wisp turn 1, then use Iron Head turn 2 and you'll change to steel type.
I believe the reason Meowscarada and Greninja cant do this is because of their dual typing specifically, making Cinderace all the more unique compared to the other two
Meganium should get a buff like a HUGE amount to its Grass-Type moves and offensive stats, under Sunlight/Grassy Terrain, which I would call Herbal Boost, which would boost its Attack & Special Attack by 50% (100% if both Sunlight & Grassy Terrain are each set up) respectively.
"Please buff Meganium"
GF with the Indigo Disk: "Nerf Meganium? Alright!"
Quaquaval should be B tier as it was ranked OU for half a year. Great video!!
imo, Meowscarada will be back in OU. It will have competition of course, but that movepool and speed tier will always give it a place
it gained some new moves in indigo disk
If we're making this a series (which tbh, I'm down for), I'd love to see variants of this for Pseudo-Legendaries, Box Art Legendaries, and Mythicals. Though admittedly for Box Art Legendaries in particular you'd need to base it on more than just tier because all but a small number of them share the same tier.
Meganium has always been the pokemon I first look for new moveset changes in every new release since gen 6
Me too. I also have thad bad habit, this gen lost Aromatherapy and got Body Press, Knock Off and Zen Headbutt. The problem is that stil with shitty Leaf Guard and no signature move that gives a specif niche.
Yay! My favorite starter, Swampert, ever made it to A tier, I'm so proud of him. I don't care if he isn't S tier (Which honestly it's a very tough spot to reach), as long as he is still ze best and still is.
Love it. Do you think you can make a eevelution tier list too?
Always wanted a well done starter analysis, my hope was fading but fsg is there for a reason
I know people like Charizard, but I gotta say I would put it in B. While it’s had OU nichés, I can’t put it above infernape for how good it was in gen 4, 5, and 6 to an extent.
Infernape has always been good in UU
Fair but solar power charizard is a menace. Almost nothing can come in on an overheat from this thing. And it’s mega’s have always been goated
Zard has been OU in 3 gens, UUBL in Gen 2 with a great niche in OU if you can pull it off, while also having a good niche in OU in gen 8 with its base form. Infernape was OU for 2 gens and hasn't had a niche in OU since Gen 5. Zard has had lower lows than infernape but it has had higher highs too.
@@supercrazy843 solar power charizard is a menace tho
@@Alastordadeer only in gen 8 during Isle of armor. Solar power zard is strong but historically hasn't been enough to have a solid niche until gen 8 Isle of armor
Shouldn't we count Raichu for Yellow's Pikachu? So Meganium wouldn't be so lonely down there.
In neither game where Pikachu is a starter can you even evolve it.
@@skeetermania3202 You can trade it to another game, evolve it there and trade it back to yellow
As someone who had chikorita as their first starter
I still wait for the day it will be good
And here I was wondering when new fsg content would show up
