DISCLAIMERS ON FORMATS COVERED:
Notice I said POPULAR formats, meaning a format where there is a significant amount of people who compete in it for tournaments and so on and so forth. Now Popular does not mean official even though two of the formats I will be covering were official formats being Japan Nintendo Cup and VGC, but it is an indicator of what a good portion of competitive players thought was “optimal” at the time. Also sometimes the Pokemon Battle Historia doesn't provide enough information to talk about certain Pokemon so I add Smogon analysis to make sense of it. This is pretty rare though.
To the people asking why I don't cover Smogon Singles for Gens 1 and 2: It wouldn't really be a history video if I covered those because online Smogon gen 1 meta to my knowledge wasn't actually played until late 2000s. I wanted to cover tournaments/competitive battling that was actually played during the early years of Pokemon (late 90s).
To the people asking why I cover Smogon at all for singles: To my knowledge, Smogon was the most popular format for Gens 3-5 and held a number of tournaments throughout the years. As for Gen 6, I am not covering Battle Spot Singles because there is more information and explanations about sets being used relative to their own meta on Smogon. In other words, there are few written analyses about Battle Spot Pokemon besides the Top tiers and I would like to avoid theorycrafting because it may have a hint of bias (though I theorycraft if I REALLY couldn't find information on a certain Pokemon). The keyword here is explanations. Though I did find statistics of most Pokemon used and most moves used, there wasn't really any explanations on why. Also the few Pokemon I did find analysis of for Top Tier Battle Spot Singles had very similar move sets to the Smogon OU sets anyway.
For the record, I do not care what rules or formats people play their battles by nor am I saying these formats are the only formats that should be played. The way you play Pokemon is between you and your opponent and I will not fault you for using evasion or whatever, I just like examining popular tournament formats.

*That's it. Wobbuffet overpowered. Nothing can fight the Splashbuffet.*

Imagine it got taunt as one of it's moves.
Might need to remove shadow tag if it had taunt.
>when a stupid meme pokemon ends up being so strong he gets relegated to the tier that consists of Gods and Primal Beings
This is even stupider than Quagsire showing up in ubers, I love it.
Them derpy blue things
most banned technical options end up that way, I guarantee that the most likely banned characters in any competitive game are either ridiculously quick to attack, or look incredibly silly.
@Mister X knows what a green text is.

@@masonjones7777 Yeah, that's right lol. For example, in DBZ:Budokai Tenkaichi 3 you have Yajirobe which can't even fly and it's not really strong, but he has an ability (Senzu Bean) that makes you regenerate literally all your life, even if you're one hit from dying

But they're the same thing?
This definitely cracked me up!
What about human stupidity?
@@trombonesectionbestsection9935 That's infinite, not unchanging.
Several things you can add to that list: Death, taxes, human stupidity, the amount if Zubats in Mt. Moon, and the fact that at least someone is gonna throw a childlike tantrum over the next Smash reveal.

Wobbufett and Wynaut: *Allow us to introduce ourselves*

Just imagine how insane Chandelure would have been if it got its Dream World Shadow Tag ability in Gen 5.
It went straight to Ubers in the Dream World metagame in Gen5
If Chandelure actually received Shadow Tag, it wouldn't even be a monster, it'd be whatever's beyond that. In the dream world meta, it could switch into Blissey or any fighting type and just win flat-out. With such incredible attacking power and having the powerful Fire typing, Shadow Tag Chandelure would have utterly eclipsed Mega Gengar, and would have probably been the pokèmon that a new meta was made for, rather than Rayquaza.
I feel like tyanitar would be in almost every team just so that it can pursuit trap it
@Nish The Great mega gender😳
It gets it in radical Red
So that's two starter trios interrupted by a blue, round derpy thing... both before the grass starter.
Huh.
And third one by Unown, although that time it was before the water starter.
And both derps have had interesting histories and have both been to ubers. A curious coincidence.
Blue roud derpy things ftw!
thats because grass is gay.
That's because grass types are easily the least popular type next to Ice. Very few Grass types are good, most grass types suck
"Gothitelle was the first time Wobbuffet wasn't the only one to trap stuff"
Cries in Arena Trap
R3GEN it’s different.Arena Trap don’t effect Flying Type.
Shadow Tag Don’t effect Ghost type.
Magnet pull :'v
And two Pokémon with Shadow Tag now cancel each other out, right?
Arena Trap doesn't work against ghost types either since Gen 6. So unlike Shadow Tag it doesn't work against Flying, Ghost types and Levitate users
@ all trapping abilities cancel eachother, if Wobbuffet faces an arena trap user both can switch.
I know nothing about competitive Pokémon but I'm proud of my favourite blue bastard for dominating like that. Thank you for documenting the glory of Wobbuffet so well!
A baby Pokémon, relegated to Ubers?!
*Wynaut?*
I understand there's reasonable arguments to be made for this; what I don't understand is how anti-Smogon types haven't meme'd "baby to strong pls nerf" to oblivion? Where's my meme's people?

How good were Dusclops and Dusknoir actually?
YES!!! Dusknoir is one of my favorites, period.
Not good enough to catch a grovyle at least.
That would be very interesting. A pre-evolution that is actually better than the evolution
Yes
I nicknamed one Magolor. Still have it on my teams to this day
This had to be among the most interesting videos yet. Didn't know that Wobbuffet's history with Ubers was that rich. I kinda hope Shadow Tag gets unbanned in Gen 8 by Smogon, just to see how Wobbuffet would fare.
it wouldnt help. shadow tag got a huge nerf already
Shadow Tag is still allowed in Ubers. It's the only way Wobbuffet can compete there. It's just banned from everything below Ubers, which is why Wobbuffet is not banned from the lower tiers now.
Shadow Tag is too good for OU. Without Shadow Tag, Wobbuffet is not too good for even PU (the lowest tier).
Jessie's Wobbuffet in the anime used Bide one time. I feel like it would makes sense for it to get it in the games too.
It would be good on an outrage locked mon
It would probably never use Bide, though. It fits, and I like the idea, but the other moves are just better.
@@SomeUnsoberIdiot I mean it's competition is Safeguard, Destiny Bond, and Splash. I'm sure somebody who would use Wobbuffet in competitive would also use Bide. Plus it'd be nice for challenge runs.

Well, that's the way it is.
Is that so?

How GOOD was Clefable ACTUALLY?!
I love me some Fairy-types!
Do it. My Clefable is one of my favorite Pokémon.
Wobbuffett is becoming one of my favorite Pokémon ever. I have been using 3 wobbs, 2 FEAR Ratattas, and a Quagsire in AG and have a 83% win rate with over a hundred wins under the belt
Wobbs plus Quagsire is god tier. If you see a team full of meme names Olaf in AG... that’s me
Queen Quago and Jr.W
what the fuck is wrong with you
TheIncredibleMasterE A lot of things but I am serious about the team, I have bolstered a lot more wins since. It’s been the joke in my friend circle that Wobb can go on any team and win. Someone even got a wobb plush and just for the memes lol
TheIncredibleMasterE I can give you the showdown spread if you want?
Doubledasher No no no... Just... Why would you do that to someone?
I still remember the time a kid tried to beat me in Pokemon saying he's a god since he completed Pokemon let's go Pikachu
I literally destroyed his team with a wynaut and called me a hacker hahaahhaahhaha
@{ Tomato } he called my Pokemon trash and called wobbufett weak
So why not destroy him with it's pre evolved form Wynaut

Respect to you buddy. I hate fighting Wobbufet (nuzlocke my poor Pokémon qwq)
OMG OMG! HAX! ai repporrrt U!
Make no surprise he actually tanked a shadow ball from giratina for team rocket in the movie, this dude is a living legend
To be fair, shadow ball was a special move at that point.
*How GOOD was Piloswine/Mamoswine ACTUALLY?*

Yes!!
That'd be cool!
Wow your still going
Jack the great
I WILL NEVER GIVE UP
Steven M Attrell well I'll help you with this cause I care for this pokemon it was also on my team and in hall of fame in goldheart
How GOOD was CLEFABLE actually???
2:55 Tickle, Charm, Encore and *Splaaaaash* xD
Wynaut is incredibly useful in Little Cup. In LC, shadow tag isn't banned so you can control the enemy with decent predicts and a sweeper. Destiny bond with eviolite means you can almost always tank a hit. When your enemy throws out a problem, you destiny bond -> encore -> swap to shellder for free turn or two of shell smashing.

How good was Clefable(aka *the fairy god* ) actually?
neon flashsparkotron DID YOU JUST ASSUME CLESFABLE'S GENDER?
I thought Xerneas,Magearna,Diancie and the Tapus were Fairy gods.
Fairy god? You mean mega alteria? The floofiest of gods.
Robert Harris It was once a victim but now a killer.
Aidan F they can't pierce that mighty cotton guard. Though pixilates nerf really hurts it. Honestly wish it had a more useful ability. Like the one that halfs super effective damage.
"There's 2 things that never changed, war and wobbufet" man that made my day.. LOL
i love wobbufett. its so dopamine inducing to tank a super effective crunch from an uber and one shot with a counter
Ive been asking for Clefable for so many videos now. I will be 30 before it happens..
TJ Suydam I’m seeing a lot of Clefable comments so I’d say week after Sceptile is likely to be clefable
TJ Suydam you might wither away
Looking around Clefable has a pretty good shot.
How good was TENTACRUEL actually!?
Wobbuffet: Can I at least get a healing move or a way to boost my stats in some way?
Mega Sableye: YOU GET, NOTHING!
Wobby can’t get a healing move but I got an idea….
Just use any Pokémon that was healing wish just to sacrifice themselves to give away their hp for wobby
Or also give leftovers or lum berry
I do wonder how yanmega was
What shocked me the most was that wynaut being in ubers
After Sceptile...
*How GOOD was Exeggutor ACTUALLY??*
how GOOD was Clefable ACTUALLY?
How good was metapod *actually*?
Jk how about miltank????
I didn’t even know it was a psychic type until this video, all I knew was that it had a move set that caught so many people offgaurd in their first nuzlocke
Dread it, run from it, wobbuffet still arrives
How GOOD was Persian ACTUALLY?
Week after next? Maybe? Pretty please with a cherry on top?
Hopefully we get Persian soon!
I can do that for you now- not very :)
_“Hey Gamefreak, why is Wobbuffet so damn powerful?”_
_“Well, Wynaut?”_
For Gen 4 you forgot to mention the most important thing that changed. Gen4 changed how the move struggle works, prior to Gen 4 struggles recoil damage was proportional to the amount of damage the user delt, for Gen 4 and up struggle now always takes away 1/4 of your health regardless of the damage which means no more infinite battles.
How good was Flygon after Sceptile

GalaxyGuy 744 Solemnly agreed.
Okay but how GOOD was CLEFABLE actually?
I love Wobuffet!! He was my Gen IV carry, I’m hard pressed to remember a battle where he did not at least 2-1 😍
Shadow Tag shouldn’t have been banned on Wobbufett lol. It was balanced with the ability, as the original user of it - it would be like giving another Pokémon Shedinja’s Wonder Guard, then banning the ability along with Shedinja’s use of it
Except shedinja has nothing else as a natural ability. But you're right.
How good was Clefable actually?
I love how you describe wobby's movepool as garguantan and whopping as well as when you said the last move. Splash
This thing is so much fun in Showdown Ubers, especially the Custap set. Often something will attack you, bringing you down to Custap range, you'll hit it back and KO it, then get another Destiny Bond KO.
CLEFABLE pls!!!
How GOOD was Tentacruel ACTUALLY?
Scarf'd in VGC17 was fun!
beautiful video
I love the Patrons so much!
How GOOD were Misdreavus/Mismagius ACTUALLY?
Hey I love your videos and would enjoy seeing an video on how good Raikou was.
Also, is it possible to discuss the impact of certain moves throughout the games like you do for specific Pokémon, like how good was Earthquake or Extremespeed? Just an idea.
I’m late to the party here but Wobbuffet is my FAVOURITE thanks for covering it
Still waiting to find out how good tentacruel actually was... maybe someday... I WONT GIVE UP
How good is Clefable Actually
I’m surprised Spiritomb wasn’t a Wobuffet counter. It’s a Dark/Ghost type that can use its attacks freely. Even if there’s Destiny Bond, Spiritomb can still use Willo-Wisp on the Wobuffet; which slowly takes away the HP. The only thing Wobuffet can do is Encore a Spiritomb and then switch our
Spiritomb had ligma though
@@omegamanGXEWhat the hell is a spiritomb?!

How GOOD was Tentacruel ACTUALLY?! Gen 1 squid!
John Madden its a jellyfish
Tentacle is a hentai monster.
Wobbuffet is legitimately my favourite pokemon to not use. It looks derpy and unthreatening, yet it's brokenly OP if you know your opponent.
And it is absolutely terrifying to encounter, no matter what.
And now Shadow Tag is banned in Ubers too, kicking Wobb out of its “true” home and leaving it to wander aimlessly without viability outside the mess of tier that is Anything Goes
“There must be a reason hes still with team rocket, yea, wynaut”
Nice vid, luv ur content! After sceptile, please do how good was Lucario or start the gen 4 starters?!

I used to have Wobbuffet in my doubles team. I combined it with either Mismagius or Lapras that used perish song. Because of shadow tag the opponent could not take out their pokemon until perish song kicked in. If the opponent has strong attackers I actually used destiny bond to basically make it almost impossible for the opponent not to die.

Dusclops is actually legit in VGC. Trick Room Eviolite bulk is no joke. Its performance in Smogon is pretty sad, though.
The biggest problem with wobaffet, is that if he switches into a setup mon you barely can do anything to it. Also he fears giratina.
