  • In this video I show you a couple of trips hauling our homemade lobster pots in our small boat. I show you how I rig, bait and shoot my lobster pots. Then show and talk about what we catch in them, discussing applicable minimum landing sizes and other info.

    I think this guy demonstrates a true respect for the animals that he interacts with. I love the fact he constantly refers to the legal size of marine creatures and releases them back to the water. He obviously has a wonderful relationship with both his 'good wife' and his son, who always sounds so excited.

      - Thank you very much Stephen. I am thrilled to see you enjoyed our content and that you share our philosophy about responsible fishing and foraging. It is something I hope others adopt more and is a lesson we are teaching our children. Never take more than you need and always treat the natural world with respect and appreciation. I love being able to share these things with my family, and have been waiting since before my son was born to teach him about the ocean. Have a great day Stephen and all the best. :)

    When I was in Maine as a kid, a little lobster shack by a lighthouse run by a small group of fishermen had a lobster weighing in at over 10 lbs. Not bragging as I didn't catch the guy, but it blew my mind. They sold lobster $5/lb cooked with butter and parsley. Ate it right by pier. Even kids can understand how special lobster is! It always seems to taste way better when it's fresh, like all seafood yeah? I have a lot of respect for honest fishermen, though. Truly. Great video by the way. The local Byelaws for Cornwall can differ from Devon and Hampshire etc. But where I am I can have 5 total of spider, edible crab, lobster and crayfish. But no more than 2 of either lobster or crayfish. So for example, 1 lobster, 1 crayfish and 3 crabs. Best speak to your local fisheries authority. You caught some really nice lobsters and crabs. I wish we could find stuff along our beaches like you find and I would love to go crabbing one day. Would you mind shelling one of your local oysters and one of the invasive oysters so that I could see if they have similarities to the oysters I love here in the states? I don't want to waste so would you know of anyone who would eat them? I think its wonderful you have all this knowledge and share it with your son. Nice to be able to have a wife that enjoys it with you as well. You seem to have a very nice family. I love your respect for the ocean and all of the creatures that inhabit it. My son will enjoy your channel.

    • @TheFishLocker
      @TheFishLocker  Před 4 lety

      - Hi Tanya, we don't harvest the oysters because we do not enjoy the texture/taste. The invasive and local are very similar in appearance, the invasive is longer whereas the local is more round and disc shaped. When shelled they are almost identical. They both taste of the sea with the invasive being slightly stronger in flavour. I am glad you enjoy the channel and hope your children will enjoy it and find it interesting also. Take care. :)

    So glad you called it what it is. Just watched a forage clean and cook video from a channel I won't rat out, but their 'foraging" video consisted of them lifting crab pots, and occasionally picking up a clam or muscles between pots. Throwing the non keepers hard into Rocky area. "Oh we don't keep pregnant ones" chicks it against a rock. "Oh this ones to small" it's clawing has hold of the pot, rips 2 legs off tosses them off and then throws the crab over his shoulder into rocks. Was a disgrace. That's not foraging. That's disgusting to even call it that. People who don't respect the wildlife and ecosystem giving them such a bounty for nothing but time and patience...I can make human traps. Lol

    Nice video mate, should make some crab pits myself, quite skilled at crabbing off the jetty😂

      adbfishing - Haha. Cheers bud. Aye get yourself one made up. They’re good fun to make and it’s really rewarding catching with your own homemade gear.

      @@TheFishLocker think it'll be hard for me to get the hang of the weaving nets but it'd be a fun project for the summer

    I have only ever caught crabs and Bull Huss in my pots! Wrong bait i think! Also had two pot disappear of St Anthony's when left in for a few days 😢 Another really interesting video, thanks! 🦀🦀

      MrNakedLandscaper - It’s horrible when folks do that isn’t it. We had a couple of ours get lifted by someone. Thankfully we got them back. Fresh fish like mackerel I’ve found catches crabs and huss, stinking wrasse or pout catches more lobsters. That’s what I’ve found anyway. 😉👍🏻🎣🦞

      @@TheFishLocker It is awful, our pots were far away from anyone but still went. I've got a doggie in the fridge from the weekend so going to try that next weekend a bit further round the coast 👍🦞
