Mackerel Fishing and Hauling Lobster Pots - Sea Fishing Cornwall

- The Mackerel fishing this year has been very patchy with the mackerel taking their time to appear in numbers, so I made sure I capitalised on their appearance in Falmouth. Also stopping to check what was in the homemade Lobster pots. Big chunky Mackerel, edible crabs, spider crabs and lobster. Natures bounty!!
The Fish Locker. I cant get enough of your videos. I love how natural you capture everything and how in detail you go. I can definately learn from you
Dad_Of_Two - That is really great to hear. I have been saying for a while now, if the videos have helped people out then they were worth making. All the best mate. 😊👍🏻🦀🦞🎣
I'm just say God bless you. Because you sow happiness in our hearts when we see your video. And secondly we learn from you the right way to catch fish.
Thank you 👍
Rimon Alturkey - My Thanks Rimon. God bless you and your family. 😊🎣🐟💙
I enjoy this so much! You feel like you're on the boat with him, it's quite relaxing. I wish I had somewhere like this to fish. I'd never make it to work!
Salty Pirate - Haha. There are a few videos on our channel that do represent “sick days” 🤣
Very successful day & another great relaxing plus informative video John. Everything about your videos, your relaxed commentary & explanations make us feel that we are in the boat with you. It does not matter how far behind we are in our viewing or how up to date we are, NOTHING CHANGES. Brilliant mate, cheers from Don of South Aust.
I am glad that is how it feels as that is my intention. 😊
Love your channel mate , you care enough to explain things in detail as you're setting or catching , would love to see a few more catch and cooks too. Many thanks
Stevey Dewar - That is something that I will be addressing soon. We have several catch and cooks planned. 🎣👍🏻🍽
Fished galloways last weekend never seen so many mackerel the sea was boiling, up and down the beach as far as I could see, fantastic sight ,some of the fish were huge, filled our bucket in no time, the misses even had a go.Thanks for the video john
gary CURD - Sounds insane!! It’s crazy when they get feeding like that isn’t it. All the best mate.👍🏻🎣😉
Great stuff John,
one of the golden moments in New Zealand is, if the boat is spotless in the
morning and later in the day its a vile mess with all the perfectly prepared
fishing tackle in carnage------- ITS BEEN A GREAT DAY.
The look on your face answers all fishermans questions, Good on ya mate.
Cheers Mike.
Mikethatguy - Haha. I’ve said it before. If you have a fishing boat that never gets dirty you aren’t using it properly. 🤣👍🏻🎣
It's like being on the boat fishing with me grandad like I used too😭😭
- Surely I don't look that old do I? :P I am glad we could take you back to that happy time with your grandad. Have a nice day Sam. :)
Another fantastic video and very aducational thanks John keep them coming
David Murdoch - No worries David, glad you enjoyed it. 😉👍🏻🎣
Funniest video I have watched for ages. That is if you watch with captions turned on. Always part of my Friday night. Keep them coming...
Gareth Williams - Oh my god mate. It’s hilarious isn’t it? What absolute jibberish!!! Haha. 🤣🤣🤣
Thanks again for another superb video, good to see those big mackerel put a smile on your face 👍
Stinky Muppet - It’s always good to see them big chunky fish. If only they got to 5-6lb round here. They’d be insane fun!! Lovely to eat and great bait. 🎣👍🏻🐟
thanks again for being the most watchable fisherman bloger youtube by far.
here I add a few names at the bottom of the article that I am pasting that support my understanding that by not touching an undersize mackerel you increase its odds of survival.
i am South African but fish on the French side of the channel. i have done this for tweet years. each season we have a patch when we get mobbed by smaller than desired mackerel. i was aware of just how much of the tiny stick scales remained on my hands and began to read. i now make it a rule on my boat that the mackerel should be gently unhooked without where possible any touching. i also don't allow guests to fish if they do not eat fish...
i have a string of hooks where i have filed off the barbs for when the small ones run with the larger ones.
i was unable to find the article that first alerted me but the following along with the references is helpful.
thanks again for first class and highly watchable videos.
In the late 1970s we carried out several experiments to try to find out why dead mackerel were being found in vast numbers in the SW, co-incident with the purse seine and trawl winter fishery.
The short answer is that the fish died due to skin damage interfering with their ability to maintain osmotic balance, and the skin damage was due to abrasion between crowded fish in the nets.
We found that mackerel caught on barbless hooks and never handled, just dropped into keep tanks or nets, survived quite well if allowed to swim freely, but holding a mackerel caused enough damage to eventually kill it, sometimes two days later.
I have a number of publications showing the results of all this work.
These are:
So, when anglers have caught enough mackerel for a fry or for bait, they should stop fishing for them unless they are using barbless hooks and can return the fish to the water without touching them.
Mike P.
Christopher Christoph - Now that is how you present your argument. Fantastic information presented well and with factual evidence to support. Brilliant comment. 👍🏻🎣🐟
I'm so envious of people who understand all the cycles and systems that help them to predict where the different fish will be at a given time
- It comes from a lifetime of fishing and a real passion for marine life and the sea.
Cheers John, great to see someone catching.
I made a 200 mile round trip to Anglesey yesterday and blanked. wasn't happy.
8r4ham - Ouch. Those trips are the ones that separate the men from the boys. Regroup and carry on mate. 👍🏻🎣
Hi there,
Great viewing, you're a fantastically skilled fisherman, love you're videos, thanks for putting them on CZcams 👍
Neil Lewis - I don’t know about that Neil, I’m just doing what I love doing. 😊🎣🐟
Your videos are informative no doubt - not that I'm about to take up fishing at my advanced age, but I do so enjoy watching you and your family.
- Thank you Suzette, we are simply sharing what we love doing. We love getting out on the shore and the boat together as a family. :)
Great video. Bumper crop from the sea. Always a pleasure to watch your vids. Can't wait to see the next.
Marris Gaming - Thankyou Marris, all the best. 🎣👍🏻😊
@@TheFishLocker and you John. Tight lines. Will keep you updated with my Barbel captures in next few weeks. It starts to hot up from now
Really enjoy your vids. John Thank you
BilberryStu - Thanks Stu, all the best mate. 👍🏻🎣🐟
Another great watch John, keep em coming, 👍
Martin Thorpe - Thankyou Martin, all the best. 👍🏻🎣
Another great Info-Tutorial from the Fish Locker stable. This video is typical of the videos John creates. I'm in Australia, an Estuary fisherman & while the fish & fishing techniques vary considerably between UK & Australia the videos are always informative & entertaining. John's easy-going style compliments his presentations. Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to more videos. Sorry, I cannot help you clean your boat.
himderfella - Thankyou very much. And don’t worry about helping clean the boat. I gave it a wipe and it rained heavily that night and hey presto - clean boat. 😬🛥🐟
What a great catch John, well done. Keep the videos coming.
Andrew Dudman - Thanks Andrew, just a little mess about trip to check the pots. 😊👍🏻🎣🛥
There’s a few good meals there!
Another educational Friday vid, John.
The Lobster season starts on 1st October 08.00 hours and lasts until 30 th November here in Bergen, Norway. I am looking at giving it a go. Didn't catch what you use for bait in your pots for Lobster.
Have asked some of the local fishermen there fav Lobster bait, the number one bait seems to be Wrasse, cut in half, sun-dried for a few days, so it stinks. Some also said, Wrasse salted for a couple of weeks was as good. The smellier the better. They also maintain that it keeps the crab at bay and lasts longer in the water.
Second on the list was salted Makerel as it doesn't wash out so quickly.
Mind you - when asked WHERE they set their pots... met with .... Computer says No.
Afterthought: The older lobster fisherman proposed that Lobsters shy away if the pots "wander" in the tide. Need to be a good weight in the pots, especially in quick / rough tides. Maybe the same for crabs... dunno.
If anyone is interested I can post the Norwegian recipie for salted Mackerel...
Thanks again. I apprecate your time and efforts.
Derek Allport - I was down on Hovland for a couple of days the other week and saw a fella hauling lobster traps? I have my own secret favourite bait that does really well. But anything will do, and yes the smellier the better. 👍🏻 As for where to shoot them. Rough rocky places inshore is where I get my best lobsters.
you're channel great inspired me to record some videos also. Learned a lot from your channel so thank you.
Ducicek - Thats great to hear. All the best with your videos. 😊👍🏻🎣🐟
Good stuff John, safety paramount when shooting pots, hauled 350 in a shift, all hydraulic, but never alone like yourself.
David Booth - Absolutely mate. I did a bit of potting in a previous life. 15-20 fleets of 30 pots a day. I loved it. But as you say, never solo. These ones are just a bit of a hobby for me and the family. 😉👍🏻🎣🦞
Enjoyed that John, no monsters but a nice variety of fish & an excellent haul in the pots, you must be eating well in the locker household!!
Shore Fishing Essex - Thanks mate, aye we do ok. Can’t beat a bit of fresh fish and lobster. 😊👍🏻🎣🍽
Great video again John, and some lovely grub.🦞🦀🦞🦀🎣👍
gary murray - Thanks Gary. All the best mate. 😉👍🏻🎣🦞
My mom is known as the Butcheress of Lake Ontario, she's got that title because she will keep as many fish as her fishing license permit. I had some conflicts with her and in some cases I straight up dump her fish bucket's content back to the lake. She was not happy. I applaud your fishing professionalism and your environmentally mindedness.
- Thank you Ray, we try to practice catch and release wherever we can. I won't give anyone a hard time for taking fish that they are going to eat, if your mother eats all that she catches then good on her. :)
Mackerel here were also scarce till this week. Now the fridge is full again and the fish a decent size, 38-40 cm. 2018 felt easier though, somehow more predictable.
Your family fishing video was super too, thanks from up North, EcA.
east coast andy - We are getting lots of tiny ones with just a few good ones mixed in. But loads of pilchards lately. 2018 at times you couldn’t help but catch them. 🤷🏻♂️🎣👍🏻 Tight lines Andy. 😉🎣
Well the marathon of filleting, smoking and pickling (cornish shore Rob's recipie) is finished. All delightful to eat. Need a bigger freezer! Thanks John, take care on the boat, ECAndy
east coast andy - He does some good vids. I see he’s jumping on the “catch and cook gravy train” and knocking them vids out. Good on him. 👍🏻🎣🐟
Love it, very good advice, young learn the truth, what to do & what not to do, information passed on, keep the videos coming, tight lines & respects, regards .
MrProtector65 - Thankyou very much. Yes, we agree on that then. I have been waiting since before my boy was born to teach him all these things. All the best. 👍🏻🎣🐟🦀🦞
I love your videos. I don't normally bother watching many videos on CZcams but I love yours. Reminds me of when I lived in Newquay near the boating lake. Used to go down the harbour & pick up a nice crab for tea x
- Thank you very much Tina. I am really glad that our videos are reminding you of a happy time. How long ago did you leave Newquay? It isn't as nice a place as it used to be I have found. :(
@@TheFishLocker I moved there 2003 & moved to Bournemouth 2008. Northern girl, originally from Chester. Took those years to finally be excepted lol. I've heard it's lost a lot of it's charm. Skinners was my local. Will move back to Cornwall in the future, possibly Truro way though.
Tina Williamson - We live towards that area and I believe it is much nicer. Newquay now is not the place it was. We have family up in Warrington and I’m from the North east. I’ve been down here 10 years nearly and I’m still an outsider. 😆
Looks like a very nice dinner.
Alibi Mac - Thankyou. 👍🏻🎣
Hey John after watching your video of catch and cook you gave me a brilliant idea, I had a tree stump in my garden so I made a Swedish stove out of it then set it on fire it worked fantastic (thanks for the tip) love this video m8 Tel G
Works great doesn’t it. 😊👍🏻
it was amazing m8 I burnt the whole of the trump,,, thanks John for the idea

Trampster - Best of luck mate. Still plenty of silver bars around. 😉🎣🐟
Another good video John,I went out in the orkney last weekend,me and my nipper had 70 mackerel, they've been around here in Guernsey for a few weeks now...
Paul - You’re lucky. They’re patchy as hell here. Here and gone in a tide. 🤷🏻♂️🎣
Brilliant video as always - take care out there :)
George Ros - Thanks George, tight lines mate. 👍🏻🎣😉
Great video, yeh my old school friend use to go lobstering and did exactly what you said about the line getting wrapped around his leg .... I don't think they ever found his body but they found the boat going round in big circle's ,that was a sad time, it was a good few years ago.
Graham R Dyer - That is a very sad story, what is sadder still is it’s a relatively common one. All the best Graham and have a great Christmas. 😊👍🏻
Yes I will but make sure you and the family have a good one.
Graham R Dyer - Thank you. Be sure to subscribe to our new channel as well please Graham. We will be uploading to both moving forward. 😊👍🏻

6 ads in this video alone 😀 Didn't skip even one ad 😊
Haha thank you so much!!
Happy I found your channel.
Unsubscribed from another fisher in the states who had a video where they shot all the fish they were keeping. No thanks. Love your channel.
Liz P - I saw that video. Seemed a bit unnecessary to me. Like they were doing it just to provoke a reaction. 🤷🏻♂️🎣🛥
Justin Lucas - Some folks I imagine subscribed to him because of that video. I didn’t enjoy it. 🎣🐟
This episode really cheered me up as I returned from Sandsend, cold. wet, fishless and hungry! Cheers John, I'll be having crab paste on white bait tonight! hahaha! ;)
Malc Proud - Where did you fish from? Car park or did you go along the the cliff top?
Car park John, too crippled to go up top these days and it was a half hearted trip really. St Bees Head next time though. lol
Malc Proud - Good luck mate. 😉👍🏻🎣
That was great 👍
Glad you enjoyed it Terry. 😊
Awesome video John you seem to have the perfect life

Another fab video John - without question, you've definitely got the best content on CZcams. I appreciate all your effort!

If only Mackerel got up to 4-5lb wouldn't need to fish for anything else! Another great video mate.
IOM Fishing - Haha. Yeah. A 5lb mackerel on the spinning gear would be something else!!
kelp looks like it's really healthy.. nice
DumbestFisherman TV - I’m pretty sure I’m the olden day’s they used to boil it down to make iodine. 😉👍🏻
@@TheFishLocker ah, the days before iodized salt.. nice reference.. still.. our kelp here in the summer dies off, looks sickly, etc.. no love for the benthic organisms... hope things are well with you man
top Presentation.
its worth noting that when touches a mackerel it is the moment it begins to die. takes about three days. the protective slime and tiny scales com off and bacteria sets in.
better to hold hook tight and invert the hook and most times the mackerel fall off untouched.
Christopher Christoph - I’ve just had this conversation with someone else. I can see that your sentiment is good but the information you are stating just isn’t accurate. I will concede that a fish that has been handled will not have as high a survival rate as one that hasn’t. But the mortality rate you are suggesting just isn’t true. Look at all of the catch and release fisheries that see multiple captures and releases of the same fish. Tuna tagging for instance. I have seen many many fish with bite marks in them of great scars across their bodies and they still survive. I believe the information that is being provided to you is with a bias in mind. 👍🏻🎣🐟
Christopher Christoph - Here is a fish that I caught earlier in the year that was healing well after an attack. And yet I am to believe that by touching one that I will kill it? I’m sorry but the evidence in front of my own eyes says otherwise. But I appreciate the sentiment. 😊🎣🐟 facebook.com/2019278948086561/posts/2739332329414549?sfns=mo

Ooh salted and smoked mackerel is the best

Thanks For posting, learned quite a lot from ur videos as just started fishing of a sib!! Did u ever fished the Jurassic coast off Swanage...? Plan to go there soon... any advice will be welcome!
TheTrily - I’m sorry I haven’t. But I know a guy who fishes from a kayak down there. Give Liam Faisey a message. He has the vlog “Cornish Kayak Angler” he’s a brilliant lad and great angler. If anyone can help you out it will be him. 😉👍🏻🎣
What legend John is. Were theres water theres fish :) carnt stop watching his vids
dannny ryan - Haha. Thanks Danny. Tight lines mate. 👍🏻🎣
Interesting to learn about the male & female spider crabs, not that i catch them but interesting all the same 8-)
mark fletcher - Glad you enjoyed the video Mark.Tight lines. 👍🏻🎣🦀🦞
Another good video mate. Do you ever use a float when live baiting ? I prefer it its great for shallow ground and good fun watching the movement in the float when the bass are chasing the bait
Mike Quick - There are conditions and marks where a float is better but generally I prefer to be in close contact with the bait. And this allows that whilst not really paying too much attention. When float fishing you need to be on the ball and tighten down to the fish rapid. This way you’re immediately on the fish. 😉🎣👍🏻 If that makes sense?
John next time you get in to a load of mackerel would you put the camera on your fish finder just to sho what to look for I’m new to using them and it would help in what to look for thanks John keep them coming
Ricky Williams - Have you watched the fishfinder and gps video?
The Fish Locker no il look for it thanks
Ricky Williams - It’s in the playlist “Small boat owners/users” here’s the link. 😉 czcams.com/play/PLRo-MB0vL0TcG8wUfy3I-tIyCYyvPSxv4.html
Hi. Brilliant video! Please, are the hooks barbed or barbless?
Lizzie Bee - Hi Lizzy, Thankyou I’m glad you liked it. The barbs are tiny on those sabikis but I still give them a little flatten with a pair of pliers. Makes unhooking so much easier. 😉🎣👍🏻
Nice video ❤️
- Thank you very much.
Something I didn't get : do you put something on the hook to attract the fish?
TheRecife63 - No the hooks have a small strip of material on them and as you fishing the string of hooks through the water it imitates a small group of fish. 😉👍🏻🎣
Just wanna be on that boat with ya catching fish 😀.
- I just wanna be on my boat catching fish!! haha.
Your brilliant my man learned Alot of u. How to tie nots. One up one dwn blood not works a treat. Love from Ireland 🇮🇪 fish locker. Would love to go fishing Wth you.
- Thank you very much Philip, it is our pleasure. I am glad that you are finding the videos so helpful :)
Nice video Dude 👍, yer . I make my own crayfish traps, out here in. B.C.Canada 🇨🇦. Fresh water lobsters 😋😋😋
Andy K Johnson Johnson - We get 2 types of crayfish here. A saltwater one. Also called a Spiney rock lobster and smaller freshwater crays. 😉👍🏻🎣🦞
Hi great videos . You should get a charter boat I would book straight away . Do you catch megs, lemon , brill , turbot and plaice flat fish etc from your boat . Keep posting videos .
- Yes, we do catch some of those in this areas. A charter boat costs a lot of money to setup and to run. I just do this for pleasure. But we are working with a local charter boat this year doing Fishlocker charters. PM us on the fish locker fb page if you want more info. :)
Great videos and also good camera quality. Do you use a Go pro? I have a hero 3 but looking to upgrade.
Denzil The Destroyer - This was filmed on a hero 3 black. 😉🎣
Some nice size mackies for smoking there John
John Wavebuster - Thanks John. Love a bit of smoked peppered mackerel. 👍🏻🎣
Going pier fishing tomorrow and hoping for mackerel. Looking to get started in beachfishing - I have a 12ft fixed spool spinning searod (ufish 350) already, what's the difference between it and a beachcaster? Is it just that a beachcaster is longer and stronger? Tried putting tinned sardines on a hook for fishing off a pier, but couldn't get it to stay on- was too soft! Just falls apart in the water! Any chance you could you do a video on fishing a handline from a beach?? Wonder does it work in the UK, want to try it next! Love your videos, watch every single one.
stewartdahamman - Glad to hear you watch all the vids. 👍🏻 A beachcaster is just a generic name for a beach fishing rod. They do vary but are usually 12-14ft long and capable of casting 4-8oz of lead. Standard uk rods are historically heavier and shorter and fished with a multiplier. Continentals are longer and lighter with fixed spool reels. 😉🎣👍🏻
@@TheFishLocker Which rod do you think is better? I have seen 18ft continental rods online - with the rod being lighter and longer would it cast further? Or would it not cast as far because it wouldn't be able to cast as much lead? Whichever one I go for I'm going to stick with a big fixed spool reel as I know I would just get bird's nest with the multiplier reel. A bigger spool lets you hold more line and thicker line, and is faster to wind in alot of line, but am I right in thinking a bigger spool lets the line come off better and makes you cast further?
Thanks so much for helping me out, great videos and always learn so much.
stewartdahamman - If you are new to it I would just recommend a cheaper one. 14ft 4-8oz casting. 6000-7000 size fixed spool. Once you become more confident you can upgrade. 😉🎣
Mackeral are also slow coming in numbers here in ireland this year
Glenn Mcloughlin - They are so blooming patchy here atm. They seem to come in for a tide and then disappear again. Soo frustrating.🤷🏻♂️🎣🐟🛥
Thumbs up as usual John. Mackerel are one of my wifes' favourite fish, unfortunately we can't get fresh mackerel over here. Spanish mackerel and slimy Mackerel seem to be the go. My favourite eating fish and probably the most versatile fish in the sea is the herring. We are spoilt for choice of fish in Aus. But I miss those two in particular. Just noticed that your feathers are a lot smaller than what I used over there, however, mackerel are greedy buggers and will take a bare hook in a big shoal. Have you ever used pollack feathers? I know you have used lure but can't remember if you used feathers.
Another interesting thing for me, are the type of spider crab. Many years ago I was collecting winkles (willicks as we further up north call them) and noticed something being washed up. On checking it. It was a spider crab but nothing like the ones you catch. The legs were about 2 foot long ( 60cm) and it was still alive. I did not know what to eat on it but took it home and asked my dad if I could eat it. I ended up throwing it away not realising that it was the legs which were prized meat. I was always taught never to eat almost dead or dead animals as we don't know what killed them.
Bringing my story to a close, over here we can buy spider crab legs in "clusters" but are prohibitively expensive for my wife and I.
Thanks again for a great video and looking forward to our next fishing adventure. Tight lines mate.
Nomad - Great comment mate, Thankyou for taking the time. I don’t know if it’s nostalgia speaking but I remember the mackerel fishing being better in years done by. The feathers I am using are called sabikis and the smaller ones catch everything big and small. Scad, sandeels, pilchard and mackerel. So I use them over the 1/0 tinsels. With spiced crabs here like you say the legs and claws hold the majority of the meat. 👍🏻🎣🦀
I agree with what you said about the mackerel population. We only caught Mackerel from piers then (couldn't afford to hire boats etc) but 52 years ago I can say that every year that we fished for them, we caught heaps and bigger too. They were/are? the best fighting fish in the sea pound for pound ( so they said then. ). I never seen a herring caught by rod, maybe because they are more deeper and colder fish? They are so famous that we wrote folk songs about them (shoals of herring ). Only thing I can vouch for is that the mackerel stocks went small and so did the size of them. Ty for your vid's mate and tight lines.@@TheFishLocker
Nomad - Any time my friend. 😊🎣👍🏻
Yay! One I missed😁 Fresh grilled Mackerel are among my favorite fishy breakfasts. Why should the Bass, Pollack, Conger etc get to eat them all? Great video as always John.👍😊🐟🎣🍽
- Haha. I really love smoked peppered mackerel too. Either with a breakfast or even in a wrap with some salad. :D
@@TheFishLocker Now there's an idea John. Have you ever thought about building your own smoker? There's a great video on CZcams where this chap builds one out of an old filing cabinet. It's ideal and would save you a fortune. 👍😊👍🐟🍽
RicTic66 - Yes I have mate and there are a good few of my friends who have built their own but we live too close to other houses to be able to set a smoker going without upsetting people.
Good video. Do you guys not have minimum size for pollock? I think they have to be 21" over here. Idk if you do this but at the bottom of your mackerel rigs use a diamond jig. Itll add flash and a bigger target if a bigger fish comes through
And you shouldve seen the snotty weather i had yesterday. Hurricane Dorian swell plus 30mph winds and a 24 mile ride if you go to my channel you can see a short video of a mahi school behind my boat with a hooked one. Pretty cool
Paul Gantz - Yes Paul, when taking fish for the table Pollack must be 30cm total length. I don’t tend to use a lure as a weight below my feathers simply because if I snag on the bottom it’s likely to lose the lure. And plain leads are cheaper than lures. 😉👍🏻🎣
I got you. We got sand bottom for the most part so not allot of snags
so did you get owt on the live bait ? great vid cheers mate
robert mansfield - Cuttlefish kept chewing them up. 🤷🏻♂️
@@TheFishLocker they make great bait
Another great video John. Disappointing spider crabs! Great to see some good size Mackerel.
Seen some other videos and people are taking the tiny ones that are no bigger than sprats!.
Look forward to your next video as always. All the best Graham
Graham Allen - Thanks Graham. The small ones are great for livebaiting but I try to return as many as possible as they’re the big ones of the future!! All the best mate. 😊👍🏻🎣🐟
Do u think you would be able to catch those mackerel from the shore john
Another great video
Declan o hagan - Not where I was, but you can catch them from the shore. 👍🏻🎣
Hi John, have you considered some form of protection on the boat sides against damage from the pots as you haul? A section of downspout with a section of carpet glued to it perhaps? It’s a nice boat, be a shame to damage it 👍
- I did make one upexactlpy as you describe but to be absolutely honest it gets in the way.
Fair play chap..... great content, keep em coming 👍
Great videos and thanks for sharing your knowledge.
What camera do you use?
Dave
- It is our pleasure Dave and welcome to our channel. We just use GoPros :)
Thank you
I'm thinking about getting a boat I do a lot of kayak fishing but I want to good out more what do you do about sea sickness
alj2110 - Sea sickness tablets. Full stop. If you are even a little sea sick. Just take a tablet. There’s zero shame in it.
The Fish Locker thank you so much is it expensive to run a boat once you've bought it
alj2110 - It can be. It all depends on what your situation is. You just need to sit and work out what your costs are and then think about how much use you’ll get from it and realistically think “can I justify it?”
Easily one of the best UK fishing channels! You should try make a video with Graeme from TA fishing.
- I bumped into him one day down here in Cornwall and helped him out with some fresh bait and local info. Then afterwards he completely blanked me and wouldn't even take my phone number when I asked him if he wanted to work together.
@@TheFishLocker He knows you are the better fisherman thats why lol.
Thats why I stopped crab fishing as the string got my foot and I hung on to the shooting bar for my life...Luckily the skipper slung the boat in reverse and I managed to cut the string.....Skipper was well pi++ed off as we had to lift and splice the string again ......
Blaser R8 - I have hear loads of times that exact thing happening. A lad got caught one time and it pulled his boot clean off his foot. Then the next day when they hauled them his boot was still tied up in the tows. Scary. Safety first. 😉🎣👍🏻🦞
Great video and information. Where are you located?
We are in the South West
Do propellers chew up the floats/ropes and the pots get lost much?
Oldpigsass - Unfortunately as there are often a lot of inexperienced boat users around during the summer, it does happen.
@@TheFishLocker It's the first thing that crosses my mind when I see those jet ski contraptions.
Oldpigsass - Yachts are actually as much to blame and often worse. They have a terrible habit of aiming for things. They use a fixed point to run their tak and often don’t consider the long keel and the rope below the floats. Stupidity really.
Hello.
Im staying in Goonhavern where there's a lake that holds Wels Catfish.
Id love to be able to go out early morning & catch some Mackerel, have them on BBQ for lunch & use heads/guts to catch a Wels Catfish in the evening.
Can you recommend any good costal Mackerel marks North Cornwall?
I'm there 29th till 5th August.
Thanks in advance,
Marcus

What's the myth with the mackerel, people say if you touch them with your hand they die if you put them back - true or false??
- False. Absolutely false. I've seen them swimming around after being near bitten in half covered in scars. Its a load of wind and smoke caused by anti fishing groups.
nice angus steak for a great surf and turf..:)..do you need a permit for those lobsterpots?
Different areas have different regulations.
Hey john, I’m partially sighted and found your channel a few months ago. I have learned so much watching you and am way Jealous of the amount of different species you have near you so much that I tried to visit your area this summer to have a bash. I get joey mackerel here in new quay wales so wondered if you could do a short vid on live bait rigging. Thanks for all your jbowledge and your time spent sharing it. God bless ya.
Jon Gibbins - Hi John, I have several videos the include livebait rigs. Most of my boat fishing videos have a live bait rig somewhere in there. 😉🎣🐟
Have you any more plans to go shark fishing in your own boat John? I want to see you wrestling with a 200lb blue in a big sea with horizontal rain and no land in sight.
AngryIrishRednecks - Haha. You might want to see it but I’m not sure if I want to do it?!? 😆 ( I am actually making up a big batch of chum now for when the weather sorts itself out!! ) 🤞🏻🎣👍🏻🦈
Please Just take what you need stop killing regardless Let Them go and take what you need
Dennis Preesman - Dennis, you can see me releasing the small fish and I stopped when I had what I needed. None of these fish were wasted. All either went for the table or as bait for other species of fish.
@@TheFishLocker thanks for the responds om not here to kill the mood Just to spread awareness. Its important to be subtainable and responsible with the nature. Great vid
What can I do not to get boat sickness?
Take seasick medication. 👍🏻
Where up north are u from
I want to go with you once for the fishing of the mackelil but I live in Glasgow please
- I am afraid it is very unlikely.
Put 50 or 60 feet between pots and they will fish way better, u have them way to close to each other
lobster man - The patches I usually fish them are only small outcrops of rock in 30ft-40ft of water. Which is why I have them so close together. Otherwise I’d only get 1 on the rock and 2 would be on sand. But yes, I agree totally. A standard fleet would have them much further apart so as to cover more ground. 👍🏻🎣🦞🦀
